Further pushing back this Kimpton lineage, we look for the parents of Henry:

John and Sarah Kimpton.

There is a John Kimpton and Sarah Coxe m 29 Nov 1794, Walkern, HERT, who are later shown to have children only in Walkern as Polly 1797, William 1799, Thomas 1802, Mary 1804, (twins) Esau and Jacob 1807, Eliza 1809, Louisa 1811, ... and whether there are other children. This is not the parents of Henry Kimpton.

The other (only) marriage is:
John Kimpton and Sarah Hitchinson/Kitchinson 9/11 Feb 1783 St Mary at Hill, London. These are the only other John and Sarah that have children in the same St Leonard, Shoreditch, MIDS parish. Benjamin 1786, Mary Ann 1788 (dies early), Henry 1798, Mary Ann 1802 ... and whether there are other children.

Finding the birth of this John Kimpton or Kempton is somewhat difficult. Marrying at age 21, would make him born <1762. This then gives 7 John Ke and 1 John Ki.

John, son of John/Margaret Ke 19 JUL 1743 St Sepulchre, Holborn, London
John, son of John Ke 1751 St Giles Cripplegate, London (dies early)
John, son of John Ke 16 APR 1758 St Giles ...
John, son of John Ke 25 DEC 1760 St Mary, Stratford Bow,
MIDS

There are 3 other Johns of other Kes but they are from other shires.

There is John, son of Edward KI 9 May 1745 Hertford, HERT

The 1745s seem highly unlikely of marrying again and producing children age 53?!

This then gives:

John Kempton, son of John and ? Kempton 16 APR 1758 St Giles
John Kempton, son of John and ? Kempton 25 DEC 1760 St Mary

For reasons of sameness, it would seem that the John, son of John of St Mary, Middlesex would be the lineage. St Leonard, Shoreditch is also Middlesex.

So the MN Kimptons have the lineage back from John J 3 - Thomas 2 - Henry 1 - John - John (1760). This father John b ~1730s remains to be searched and his spouse's name.
Minnesota Kimptons - ancestry found

In association with James Covel in the genealogy.com and ancestry.com postings, we have found a major chunk of Kimpton lineage and movements.

The Minnesota dynastic lineages of George (b ~1833 NY) and John J Kimpton (b~1835 NY), are the sons of Thomas Kimpton and Clarissa Elizabeth Nash.

Thomas Kimpton died 1861 Waterford, Racine Co, WI.
Clarissa Nash-Kimpton died in Blue Earth Co, MN.

We have validated that Thomas (b 1805/6) born in (most likely) CT (but later stated as NY).

Thomas is definitely the son of Henry Kimpton and what is suspected as the son of a (2) marriage.

Henry Kimpton bapt 10 DEC 1798, son of John and Sarah Kimpton, St Leonard, Shoreditch, MIDS, ENG.

Henry Kimpton, marriage banns Susannah Nott 27 APR 1823 Islington, St Mary, Islington borough. There is no UK or US marriage record. The suggestion of eloping can not be denied.

Susannah Nott, dau of William and Sarah Nott, b 19 SEP 1802 St Marylebone, MIDS, ENG

There are no (as yet) passenger, shipping, immigrant, citizenship, or naturalization documents for Henry and Susannah coming to the US, but they did immigrate in the early 1823 period.

In CT Death and Burials Index there are 2 mysterious mentions:

Mrs Kempton, age 21, d CT FHL film 3153 no date given
Mrs Kempton, age 24, d CT FHL film 3153 no date given

This is the only records of anything Kempton/Kimpton in CT at those times. This solves some of the problems that previous Sedgwick, Kempton-Stevens, and Saunders had with finding the mysterious Henry Kempton in (Hartford) CT, then moving into the same city as Major Henry Kempton causing conflation of UK carpenter Henry Kempton's children into that of Major Henry's lineage (one mention is Henry Jr).

It appears that Susannah Nott died in those early 1823/24 period. A (2) marriage to an unknown wife and death in the post-1824 period creates even further unknowns. It could be said that Thomas could be the son of (2) marriage, as an early census, he says that he was born in CT, but all later census say he was born in NY.

Carolina Covel appears in the family records as widow Carolina Covel, with child of marriage Alphaeus Covel as he comes down to MN records as A. B. Covel. This makes Carolina, not a Covel, but someone else.

Looking for a Carolina Covel produces nothing in the UK and US.

In the UK, we find:

Caroline Covell marriage bann with Samuel Wright 19 APR 1829. She of Woolwich, St Nicholas, London. He os Plumstead, St Nicholas, London.

Catherine Weave(r?) m Thomas Covil 14/16 JUN 1816 ST George,
Botolph Lane, London

These marriages would then immigrate to the US into CT or NY.

No birth records of son Alphaeus Covel is found in UK or US. A search of census records could find him probably being born in US.

There is an interesting US marriage:

Caroline Hamblin m Joseph Covell 1829 Portland, Cumberland Co, Maine.Maine marriage records 1705-1922.

From these records, we should be able to resolve which Carolina is Carolina, ... and finish a task of finding all the linkages of the Covel lines.

Further research of these MN Kimpton is now back in the UK in the 1700s!

Here is the ancestry.com public family trees for information with Thomas Kimpton.

Run up the line, run down the line, run across the lines and find the other branches of the family you might be searching out.

Look especially for Jim Covel who is the leading researcher of this line.

I am still trying to validate that Henry Kimpton is a Brit, as Thomas was born in NY before 1812, and strong anti-British immigrant attitude.

This means that Thomas and the other namesake names of George, John, Thomas, ... could come from other colonial lines. I spent over 8 hours running down each/every/all lineage of a known (seemingly) dead end line of a son, of which nothing else is known about him, and those that would have a potential namesake line that is missing.

I came up with these entries:

George and John J born of Thomas and we find Clarissa Elizabeth Nash, marriage dates et al and the colonial Nash lines in the public family trees.

These aare the only "valid" 4 lines that could be the missing linkage to the colonial Kempton/Kimpton lines:

George and John Jr - Thomas -:

xxxxx 7 - George 6 - John 5 .......

Thomas 7 - Ephraim 6 - Ephraim 5 .....

Thomas 7 - Ephraim 6 - Thomas 5 .....

xxxxx 8 - xxxxx 6 - John 6 - John 5 ....

This means that the person on these left side of lines moved from Mass to NY, ... or that there were a series of hops that could be Mass - NH and/or VT - NY. This would make the missing Kimpton not necessarily show up on a census in 1 state, disappear as rapidly and appear in another state within months of that census, having or not having had any children born in that state. Gets very complicated when people got itchy pants and moved every 7-8-10+ years. You barely find them in the census and town records. Just someone who was drifting through, and no records kept of them, or memory of them.

So if Jim Covel has truly gotten the Thomas death cert and it says Henry, and he is a Brit or CAN, then we have something further to look on.

Hope all this helps.
1855 WI state census:
Thomas Kimpton at Waterford, Racine Co, WI
George Kimpton at Waterford, Racine Co, WI
W.H. Kempton at Berlin, Marquette, WI

Looking further back to try and find Thomas' father, we look at the 1840-1800 censi

Start noticing the appearance of same city or county places for the same people or their children or brothers/cousins. Especially and namesakes (Thomas named after a grandfather etc.).

1840 NY census
Thomas Kimpton Albion, Oswego Co NY **our guy***
William R Kempton, Southern, Greene Co, NY
M Kempton Ogdensburg, St Lawrence, NY
Jerome Kempton Boonville, Oneida, NY **Oneida**
Hiram Kempton Toconderoga, Essex, NY **Essex**

1830 NY census
Samuel B Kempton Malone, Franklin, NY
Stephen Kempton Lysander, Onondaga, NY
Henry Kempton Fairfield, Herkimer, NY **Herkimer**
Orvil Kempton Westport, Essex, NY **Essex**

1820 NY census
Sargent Kempton (wife "Susan") Fort Ann, Washington, NY
William Kempton Rome Oneida, NY **Oneida**
Aaron Kimpton Milo, Ontario, NY **Ontario**
Henry Kimpton Fairfield, Herkimer, NY **Herkimer**
Simeon Kimpton Toconderoga, Essex, NY **Essex**

1810 NY census
Edward Kimpton Halfmoon, Saratoga, NY
Samuel Kempton Bloomfield, Ontario, NY **Ontario**
Theron Kimpton Adams, Jefferson, NY
"Henry Knapt" Warren, Herkimer, NY **Herkimer**

Thomas Kempton b~1805/6 in census says NY, 1 entry (wrong?_ says CT). There are NO census records having any Kempton names. There is a special 1, and that is this Henry listing.

1800 census et al:
Martha Kimpton NY Ward5, NYC, NY
David Kimpton Deerfield, Oneida, NY **Oneida**

There are some South Carolina and 1 Maryland Kemptons that might prove interesting.
Ann of Charleston-4, SC
George of Charleston-4, SC
John of Jork district, SC
John "Kampton" Lexington, Orangeburg Dist, SC
Michael Kempter Liberty, Frederick, Maryland

There is a story about a supposed Henry, cabinetmaker who appears in CT then disappears. He is in no known lineage. Whether this Henry is from England and comes to CT, short while, then moves into NY from which other researches (for other) put him, we can see this Henry is different from a recognized Major Henry Kempton, in the nearby vicinity!

What appears interesting is the names (namesaking?) in the family list is John, William, Susan, Thomas, brother George, ... and how this might tie into other George, Thomas, William, or John lines. Many of the lines I have researched and they do not appear to be any known Thomas Kempton lineages.

Thomas' father needs to be found by his NY birth cert, or town records in NY. That information would be gained by other vital records mentioned above. The marriage record of Thomas and Clara/Clarissa would surely help all these matters.

Please read the other Kimpton and Kempton postings here in ancestry.com and those also in genealogy.com, where I have also researched for others having these MN Kemptons and Kimptons that are so hard to trace down. That other information from these other people might also gain some valid further information on which to search from.
When you are able to find the parents of John J Kimpton, I then believe that I can then finally rediscover a lost/missing Kimpton lineage that is not within the genealogical books.

Many lineages (those ending with females) were not around at the time of Josephine Sedgwick (1910s) and later researchers. So they could only list the children that were known. They became not-in-fact dead ends that needed to be corrected later.

This is where others in your Blue Earth history of other Kemptons and Kimptons (in ancestry.com and genealogy.com) have been asking me questions for nearly 20 years. You are a lost lineage that needs to be restored.
I need you to do some footwork for vital records information.

Death certificates (MN) (Dept of Vital Records):
19xx-1931+ Nettie Kimpton-Edison Pine Island, Goodhue Co, MN
1874-1880 Annette Johnson-Kimpton (?) This also helps find the parents of John J Kimpton in MN, not showing in the census, and the Johnson parents also.

If you can gain any of this information, it will further assist me in assisting you in further research.
The other potential is 1910 showing a misspelled Cortland Edison as a boarder age 54, b ~1856 WI with father b in CAN-French and mother b in CAN-French.

1900 census has Cortland as single b Nov 1855, age 44 b MN.

This makes Nettie die between 1890 marriage and 1900 census. All confusing with vital records and census. If she died, then it is more probable that the cemetery mention of 19?? (unreadable?) is that in/on/before 1900.

There is a 1910 mention of a Cortland E Edison 1 and 7/12 years old, listed as "daughter!" with other people in Frazee, Becker Co, MN. This could be the last of Nettie, dying after this childbirth, or Cortland's 3rd wife (unknown) and then 4th wife Adeline ....

Here is (I believe and will search out connections in the genealogy books) is direct information.

1880 MN census, Beauford, Blue Earth, MN shows a convoluted family arrangement:

xxxx Kimpton = Clarissa Kimpton (widow)
b ?, ? b ~1813 NY
father ? father b CT
mother ? mother b CT
married pre-1835 NY

some/all children:

John b ~1836 NY
Susan b ~1841 NY
Lucy b ~1853 ... Wisconsin

From this information we can see a marriage in NY, then moving between 1841-1853 to Wisconsin.

There is further MN death records of this John b 14 JUL 1835 NY, d 3 MAY 1893 Pine Island, Goodhue Co, MN

Susan married a xxxxx Ward with children shown in the census.

Lucy is shown as a widow with no children.

Another nephew is mentioned from someone.

A MN marriage record is found for John J Kimpton and (corrected name) Annette Johnson. John's vital data above. Annette Johnson, b ~1849 Wisconsin. Marriage 13 NOV 1866 Fairbulat, Blue Earth Co., MN.

Children to John and Annette Kimpton are:

John b 19 JUN 1870 Beauford, Blue Earth Co, MN, d 14 JUN 1931 Pine Island, Goodhue Co., MN.

Nettie ("Marie Antoinette?" b MN death/tombstone record 18 OCT 1875 Beauford?, MN. Death date 19?? in the records. Nettie mentioned on brother John's death record of 1931, so she d 1931+, listed d in Pine Island, MN.

Annette b ~1849, m 1866, d 1874 (Nettie's birth -1880 census listing father John as widower). No death vital found. Either in Beauford, MN or to the Pine Island, MN region.

More census records need reviewing for all NY-WI-MN for the xxx and Clarissa mention, the rest of the John and Annette mentions, and what can be found for Nettie and her said 2 marriages.

There is a lot of round about information, without direct data.

Co(u)rtland Edison d 28 SEP 1932 xxx city, Norman Co, MN.

Anna Agnes Edison is shown in MN birth indiex b 10 OCT 1887, xxxx city, Dodge Co, MN. Father Courtland Edison and Kati (mispelled Nettie).

There is a death cemetery reference to a Nettie b 18 OCT 1875 (place unstated) d 19?? Pine Island, Goodhue Co, MN.

Nettie Kimpton m Cortland Edison 12 JUN 1890 xxxx city, Dodge Co, MN.

An probably infant birth/death of xxxx Edison b 15 JUL 1891, xxxx city, Dodge Co, MN.

1930 MN census Cortland Edison b ~1852 WI to Adeline (unmentioned birth year and place) living in Wild Rice, Norman, Co, MN.

Any situation searching for Charles or Charles E Milton shows 2 possibles from TX. Both born ~1870. Precinct 2, Dallas, TX and Precinct 4, Falls, TX. Both 1 and 4 months old in the 1870 census.

It is entirely possible that you are part of the MN Kimptons of Beauford, Blue Earth, MN. Check other Kimpton researches for these mentions, and within the www.genealogy.com Kimpton forum as well. They are a difficult lonieage to trace out.

In the 1880 MN census John Kimpton, head of house, age 40s, with widow mother Clarissa. There is a daugter Nettie, age 6 (~1875). The census says Clarissa b ~1813 CT or NY (!) with both parents born CT. The Kimpton father of John is said b CT.

It would seem that Anna Agnes is daughter of Cortland and former wife Kati(e) b 1887, then deather of Kati, having marriage 1890 Nettie Kimpton and Cortland Edison. Then Ruth and Cecelia born to them (?).

Need to research books and further census looks.
Not sure if they will help or not.

People in these days were more mobile, than in the pre Queen Liz I days, so one can't just sit in 1 shire and have one's entire family history come to pass.

Cambridgeshire, Kempton strip:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=epr_Cambridges...=
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=epr_Cambridges...-
Cambridgeshire, Kimpton strip:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=epr_Cambridges...
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=epr_Cambridges...-
Cambridgeshire, Kympton strip:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=epr_Cambridges...
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=epr_Cambridges...-

Use the copy and paste function into the top of ancestry.com and these should display for you. Each strip (not sure) will show only 1 page) or allow you to work next page. Strips are only 1-2 pages total for all of the CAMBS strips.

Ancestry.com also converts the KY into KI and KE, without reason, so you should be aware that not all KIs or KIS or KEs KEs, but that they might even be cross-printed.

If we had only stayed with the Old Latin KY into English KI!
All the KEs are causing the problem!

thanks so much yes a black and tan coming up!!
You can see how difficult it has been for me without your long experience.
the only proof I have is of her birth year. Even on her death certificate only says aged 65. she died suddenly on 1/10/1896. and grave stone.
However on one of your census of 1851 in Ely it says that a Hannah Kempton was boarding with a John Wright aged 10 years. Now Hannah"s husband to be mother was Susan Wright then to be Stalley. Just a thought there may be a connection here. I always wondered why she came out on the same ship so she may have know John before hand !!
the plot thickens.
I will study further the info you have given me, some of the names I have found too but of course no proof.
Hannah had a sad life and her daughter committed suicide after her mothers sudden death.
the family tried to cover it up by saying it was someone else....what families do!!
thanks again Libby
Libby with thanks

Since you haven't given any information on who/what/where you are researching, I am at a loss in answering a rhetorical statement.

The Kymptons came from the sublineage of the FitzAlan Earls of Shropshire (1480s). Two main lines went into the Hertfordshire area where they had many manors and rental lands. There is the other John of Cambridgeshire with many a dynatic line coming from there ... at Elsworth and Cambridge city.

The Kymptons of Hertfordshire were located originally in Weston, (Monken) Hadley (sometimes put into Middlesex, Walkern, Shephall, Flamstead, Chiffield, Graveley, London, Gray's Inn, Hertingfordbury, Hertford, Stevenage, and others surrounding the modern town name of Kempton, HERT.
The direct male Ephraim Kempton descendants are rightfully allowed to wear the Sir William Kympton (pre 1540s) and Sir Robert Kympton (1577) coat of arms.

We have the rightful FitzAlan coat of arms as well.

We even have a cusp 1200s-1300s mainprise (king's/ambassadorial messenger) coat of arms for the more ancient Richard-John-John Kympton sub-lineage within the FitzAlans.

Our rightful arms are thus:

Sir Richard-John-John:
On a shield sable (black), in the chief (top 1/3 portion) a walking lion of argent (silver), in the base (bottom 2/3 portion) a cross saltire (St. Andrew's "X" cross).

Sir William Kympton of Weston, HERT and London:
On a shield azure (blue), in the chief three fleur de lis (lily flower) of gold

Sir Robert of London and Chiffield, HERT
On a shield azure (blue), three fleur de lis (lily flowers) in the corners, in the base a pelican white pecking its breast with wings aloft.

We also have the ancient FitzAlan Earls coat of arms:

On a shield azure (blue) a lion rampant (walking upright and all 4 legs clawing, tail aloft, mouth open facing to the left) gold.
Kympton/Kempton/Kimpton genealogical information

I will gladly assist those people wanting to find their connections with the KYs/KEs/KIs. This means American ancestry. I will "try" to assist others of English lineages from others, as pertains to getting resources from ancestry.com, as I am very familiary with what is available here.

I have conducted the greatest research beyond that of Josephine Sedgwick, Margaret Kempton-Stevens, and Morton Saunders. I have all their books and personally knew Margaret and Morton in the 1980s-90s.

In 1990s, I had a LDS U.S. and U.K. researcher "DO!" all the known records in England of any/all Ks, xxxx-1650. The research would conclusively find our lineage, and all other lines that would assist other English people in these times.

This research denotes the 3 brothers William, George, and John and their dynasties.

My further research of 30 years supports that our K ancestry descends from the noble-extinct FitzAlans Earls of Shropshire.

The lineage from William 15th Earl of Shropshire is: ...

Sir William Kympton, landed gentry of ~many~ manors and rental lands of Weston,Hertford and London, Alderman, ...

Edmund, landed gentry, draper (clothier) of Weston/Walkern, HERT and London, ...

SIR ROBERT KEMPTON, Barrister (Attorney) of Gray's Inn, London and Chiffield, HERT (Knighted by HMQueen Eliz I, 1577), ...

William, landed gentry of Chiffield, HERT ...

George non-landed (then landed) gentry of Graveley cum Chiffield - Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, ...

Manasseh and Ephraim Kempton, both born in Berwick, both come back to (Manasseh) Colchester, Essex and (Ephraim) London.

Ephraim is a London tailor.

Wives of these (1) William, (2) Edmund, (3) Robert, (4) William, (5) George, and (6) Ephraim lineage is suspected or proven from probates as:

(1) Elizabeth Moundslowe,

(2)Lucy Hyde daughter of Sir --- Hyde of -----,

(3) ---- Hewes of Sir Hewes of Chiffield (from which the family gained great lands to the family's children,

4) Joan ----,

(5-1) Margaret Foster in HERT, second cousin, child and wife die,

(5-2) Frances (suspected Jersey of the sub-noble line of Francis Seymour, of the Seymour Earls of HERT dynasty (and their royal connections with the royalty), child George and wife die,

(5-3) Marye (Mary?/Marie?/Maria?) Jersey (younger sister?) married in London, and

(6)Elizabeth Willson (double Ls) married in 1617 Holy Trinity the Less, London.

There is no known death record for Ephraim's wife Elizabeth in London. It is suspected that she died on the ship's transit in the winter 1639/40, when they came to the colonies. Ship's records and passenger lists are still forthcoming from the genealogical archives. They, and son Ephraim in a separate residence, are shown in the Residents of London, 1630s document, Lambeth palace.

Continuing research of all the females and their father-mother ancestries continues.
The Davis and Kimpton Brickyard is located on the west bank of the Warwick, River, approximately 4 miles upstream from its confluence with the James River. It is the site of a late nineteenth-early twentieth century industrial complex where brick was manufactured from locally-dug clay and a saw mill was operated. Industrialization of the tract as a brickyard began in 1898, with the purchase of 36.75 aces of land from Joseph Nettles and the Bank of Hampton by John W. Davis and Alexander H. Kimpton.
Alexander Kimpton and his wife conveyed their haf-interest in the operation to A. C. Garrett throught a deed of trust to secure a debt of $2,356. On February 10, 1904, the Kimptons sold their half-interest in the property and in the brick-manufacturing machinery. It also included all of the appliances and utensils on the premises used and owned by the late firm of Davis and Kimpton in manufacturing brick and sawing lumber, including a sawmill and pug mill, all all engines, carts, and wagons.

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you!! Work gets in the way!!

As far as I can tell Elizabeth Moulson is the lady's name. I have docs tracing back my Kimpton line from myself (a Kimpton) to John Kimpton and Elizabeth (nee Moulson). The Cambridgeshire marriage index shows a marriage at Haddenham on 5th November 1822 for a John Kimpton and Elizabeth Moulson and Elizabeth is the name of the mother of my great, great, great grandfather Thomas Kimpton as per census reports.

I have the same reference to John snr and Susannah Sheffield. I got this reference from ancestry "hints".

I can provide you copies of what I have but it would be easier to use e-mail as I am not sure how to send docs over ancestry accounts.

Cheers, LuciaMax (Deitra dckimpt@aol.com)

Hello,

John Kimpton was born 1771 in Eltisley, Cambs and married Dorcas Green 21 April 1793. He died 26 December 1848 in Papworth St Everard, Cambs. In the 1841 census he is shown as Ag lab, living with Eady Kimpton age 50, presumably a daughter. His son Robert (1806 - 1893) brother to your John I suppose, is my 3 X grt grandfather. He and his family lived in Papworth all his life. I have his wife as Mary Maulden, but now I've seen Elizabeth Moulsen in your message I'm wondering if it's a transcription error...What do you know about her?
I do have a reference to the parents of John snr as being John 1738 - 1816 and Susannah Sheffield 1738 - 1807, but I can't remember where I got this from.
I'd love to hear some more!
