My grandfather Alexander Armstrong changed his name from Kindle to Kendall when he enlisted in the 147th OVI. His grandfather Benjamin Kindle, born in 1750, lived in Toboyne township, Cumberland Co. (later Perry Co.) PA. He and many of his family moved to settle in Miami Co. Ohio about 1815. A history of his family by A. R. Johnston lists families that settled in Sherman's Valley in PA including the names McCord, Russell, Neeper, Anderson and Johnston fleeing English repression following the Battle of Cullodon in 1746. Benjamin Kindle as a teenager may have arrived with one or more of these families probably from Ayrshire Scotland. I am trying to confirm the dates and places prior to 1750 for this name.

I have recently started researching my Kindle family via Enoch and Leah O'Brien, Mary Ellen Kindle and W.E. Johnson, and Ada May Johnson, my grandmother. I noticed that you had a picture of Leah and Enoch. I would love to have a photo/picture of them. I will be traveling through Oklahoma in late August, if that is any help.

Hello, rlk: Diane Hettrick [email dhettrick@earthlink.net has researched Kindle's of PA. She has: William B Kindle b.abt1774 m.abt 1800 Jean Neeper b.abt1774 Perry Co PA; they had 9 children: Joseph b.Nov 1801 m.1829 Martha Hunter; William; John; Mary Ann; David; Margaret; Benjamin; Eliza Gettys; Jennet. Diane cited the following authority: "Baptism Register of Rev. John Linn, Centre Presbyterian Church 1800-1819, Perry County (Cumberland Co), PA." Questions: Where did you find the middle name Bastine? Can you expand on your "...trying to find link to Northern Ireland or Scotland since the name is lowland Scotish? I'm glad you have found your new information. I'm frustrated on trying to find origins of my William Kindel b.1781 VA m. 28 Jan 1800 Greene Co TN Elizabeth Webb. My DNA results show my Kindel and distant relation Kindle of Greene Co TN are of Scandinavian origin, not British Isles as most Kendall Lines of VA are. I see you're a retired professor & offer advice to Kendall, Kindle, Kindel researchers; I'd be glad to have your advice on finding more on mine--just search for William Kindel 1781 VA & you should see some of my research. My email= f.kindel@comcast.net Thank you. -- Fred

My forebear, Benjamin Kindle, b. 1750 lived in Toboyne twp of Cumberland (now Perry) Co. PA and later in Miami Co Ohio. My grandfather changed the name spelling to Kendall when he entered the Civil War in 147 OVI. The name Kindle is reported to be lowland Scotts and I have located two freeholders with the name in Ulster in 1819 in PRONI web database. I'm still looking for link to Irish/Scottish origin of name and family move to America. The SOUNDEX system lists a half page of variations in spelling this name. Kendall is English from town of Kendal in Westmorland.

The naturalization papers show they boarded a ship in Bremen, Germany. However, the city they came from is listed as "Karshow" which is likely spelled the way it sounds rather than the actual spelling. So, Kocise was also known as "Kaschau" in 1892 when they immigrated to America. Kaschau and Karshow are pronounced similarly. No guarantees that it is the same city, but it seems likely to me.

Andrew Kindle and Anna Kolesar settled in Ansonia, New Haven County, Connecticut. Anna's brother Michael stayed in Perth Amboy, Middlesex County, New Jersey (from 1910 census). I am not entirely sure the Kocise is the place they came from, however it is the most likely. I have a copy of their naturalization papers that says they came from "Karshow" Austria-Hungary. This is an old name for Kocise, but there are some other possible cities in Austria-Hungary that could be transliterated as "Karshow." Anna Kolesar and Andrew Kindle spoke Magyar. In the 1910 census, Michael Koles(z)ar stated that he was born "Aust-Slovenian". My grandfather, Michael Kindle, was Catholic and so I assumed Andrew and Anna were Catholic as well. I tried searching the Roman Catholic Church records in Kocise with no luck. I wish I could make a break-through, but haven't been able to so far. How do you know that your relative came from Kocise?

I am seeking info on Glen Kindle, son of James Leroy Kindle and Margaret Jane Eckenrode. Glen Kindle was born in 1872 in Ada, Ohio and married Mary Reese (Some listed as Keese, Kies, or Case). They had four daughters, but one of them died before Glen died in 1903. Glen was a barber in Allen County, Ohio before his death. I believe that two of the daughters names were Helen and Edna. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My grandparents: George Bean & Clara Vickers of Ohio.

Clara's mother & father: Rose Ann Kindle & EDMUND VICKERS (he had a twin brother, Edwin or Edward.)

I have a copy of an Edmund Vickers civil war pension document, but not a copy of any obit.

I found several listings for Edmund, Edward, and Edwin Vickers in Civil War records from Ancestry, but the dates didn't agree with the year they were born...but I'm sure many boys lied about their ages at that time.

If this family sounds like yours, then I would be very interested in a copy of obit.
You may email me at OHQLTR@yahoo.com
thanks,
Bonnie Bean-Panattoni

No Kindle researcher has gone beyond William Kindle b.1755 Culpeper Co VA that I know of; many, just as you, are searching. Here's a suggestion to keep "tuned in" to results as they may occur: join the Rootsweb Kendall Email List which also includes us Kindel's & Kindle's. Several researchers there post their questions & results from time to time; and also posted from time to time are results of the Kendall DNA Project which uses scientific data to prove or disprove the ancestral theories advanced by researchers. To join this list you simply send an email to: kendall-request@rootsweb.com with no subject line and only this message: subscribe The email list computer will receive your request and subscribe you and you will then start receiving messages from the researchers, and after you are subscribed you can then post your own message(s) by addressing an email to: kendall@rootsweb.com

I am new to this and have posted in a few other places and have received a lot of help, but now I have the need to go even further back. My great grandparents were Cecil W. Kindle b.1906 & d. 1983 and Eula V. Kindle (Wilson) b.1905
& d. 1989. With the help of others(thank you again), I found both of their parents and have traced the line for my grandfathers side of the family back to Virginia to William B. Kindle b.1755 but this is as far as I have gone. I would just love it if I was able to go back further. So if anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated. I would sign up for all of the ancestry sites that I could but am disabled and live on a fixed income so can only search on the free sites, which I am sure you all know are very few and far between. Thank you all for your time and have a wonderful day.

Several are buried in Westville city cemetery and Proctor cemetery. Both are in Adair County in OK in towns of the same name. We have a Kindle reunion at the old Proctor school house in October every year. I have photos of Leander and Missouri, Enoch and Leah, and one huge family photo of Synthia Emerine Tapp's 82nd birthday in 1914. Have another photo of her and she is referred to as Granny Tapp. I am in process of getting more detailed info from my great aunt. Oh by the way, there are several more buried in Climax Spriings, MO or Edwards, MO. there is a Kindle homestead there where they have a kindle reunion every year as well. we are the same family of kindles.

From other researchers, I have this notation on burial place for Missouri (Tapp) Kindle: "a few miles NW, Wilburton, OK." Researchers are: "Kindle History" notes by Sheridan E Kindle, 1976 describe birth dates & places of the 10 children of Enoch & Leah Kindle. See Terry Bingham's tree at World Connect http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com Next earlier generation, Enoch Kindle & Leah O'Brien, died 1895, 1908, Benton Co MO; I have for burial place of Enoch: Climax Springs, Camden Co, MO; same for Leah (O'Brien) Kindle.

Hello
My wife has been doing the researching for me.
My late Grandmother Goldie Kindle was the daughter of Laney Kindle.
Laney Kindle b.1885 Wilburton, Latimer Co OK. His parents were Leander Kindle & Missouri Tapp & grandparents were Enoch Kindle & Leah O'Brient.
That's all I know. Feel free to email me privatly at my wives address Chevygirl65 at AOL. She will provide you with more information if needed. But I think we are from the same group of Kindle.

Do you have any stories about them? I sure would like to know more about my Grandparents . Oh and I will be making a trip to Oklahoma in the near future to take pictures of gravesites of the Kindles. Do you know where most are buried or are they scattered about in OK and MO?

I am Cherokee member and my grandma was a Kindle, but we don't get the Cherokee from that side of family. However, I do know that there are several Kindles in OK that are Cherokee from their ancestors marriages. There are several Kindles that live in Westville, OK that are all related to each other and the Kindles in MO. There are so many I am not sure how to link them all. :) Start by looking at the Kindle genealogy info and the names they married to on the Dawes Roll.

I AM TRYING TO TRACE FAMILY MEMBERS OF A JOE KINDLE.

The information I have is as follows:-

Joe Kendle was with the American Forces during World War 2.

I believe he was an Officer in the Airforce, though this is not certain.

He was possibly injured and spent time in the UK American Hospital, Frenchay, Bristol, England.

He was definitely in Bristol during Mid to Late 1944. At this time he was about 20-25 years old.

He spent time visiting with an English Family named Jenkins, who lived in Cleeve Hill, Downend, Bristol, where he was very highly thought of. He may remember arranging for a cake to be made for their daughters 14th Birthday. She was called Eve and she had an elder sister named Sybil.

It is thought, he came from Florida, where his father was a Doctor.

It is not certain but I believe Joe was sent back into action late 1944 to early 1945,
if he survived through the war is not known.

If Joe was married, before or after the war (if he did make it back) did he have children?
Did he have brothers or sisters who married and had children?

If by the remotest chance you are related to Joe or know of any member of his family, I would be eternally grateful if you could pass this letter on and would advise me of this.

I thank you in advance.
Wm Kendle 1752 England-1782 Moore Co NC--1827 Sevier Co TN

...an interesting guy: WILLIAM KENDLE: b.21 Aug 1752 Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England d.18 Nov 1834 Sevier Co TN. In England he was an apprenticed blacksmith, in 1777 he was pressed into the British Army & taken to America where he first fought against us but at Charleston in Oct 1780 he deserted & joined up with General Francis Marion The Swampfox & fought in several historic engagements in the Carolinas until discharged Dec 1782. He went immediately to live in Moore Co NC & 1810 US Census there shows he & wife aged 45+ w/ son 16-25 & dau 10-15, living next door to JACOB CAGLE & ANDREW AUMAN w/ several LUTHER families nearby on same census page. 1820 census shows just he & wife. Apparently she died aft1820 & he went to Sevier Co and married 1827 Elizabeth ___? the JP was Keith ___? Men of his neighborhood Mar 1833 Sevier Co who vouched for him in his pension papers were: ISAAC HILL, ISAAC RICHARDS, HENRY KRAGLE, WILLIAM KRAGLE, JESSE RODGERS; appeared before Justice RANDLE HILL. His widow Elizabeth Kendle is in the 1840 census Sevier Co living alone next door to WILLIAM NEWMAN & JAMES W ELLIS. My theory is that his son is WILLIAM KINDLE b.1786 NC m. BARBARA LUTHER b.1797 Randolph Co NC--they went to IN & then IA; other researchers' family trees show several marriages among KINDLE, AUMAN(ORMAN), CAGLE, LUTHER in both descendants & ancestors who came from PA to MD prior to NC. ANYONE HAVE MORE INFO ON THIS REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOT #W-7978? Where did he live in Sevier Co? What was his wife's maiden name? Why isn't he in 1830 census of Sevier Co? I see some Kendle-Kindle in adjacent Haywood Co NC--are they related here? Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. Fred in Folsom CA
