Re: great-grandmother ella king

I am a descendant of Ella King's sister, Martha Matilda King. Martha was born Aug 28, 1855. Ella's name was Mandy Ella King and she was born in July of 1867. Martha and Ella King's parents were David Wells King and Florida Caroline Tyler. I have also heard from my father that "King" was not their real name because they had changed it when they worked on the King Ranch in Texas. Your post is the first I have heard the name Kingfisher. The story in my family is that David King wanted to pass as white in Texas so he changed his Indian name to King. The name Kingfisher sounds like it is an Indian name. My sister claims to have found our Martha on a an Indian Roll in Texas. Please email me at my private email: rsmall4546@sbcglobal.net
Ella King

Sissy;
I don't know of an Ella, but my grandfather was Chester Wiley King, born in Benton Co., Arkansas 10/10/1899. This was just across the state line from Delaware Co., Oklahoma, which was Cherokee land (rez). In fact, on the property where he was born, he stated their house was in AK and their barn was on the Nations. The property originally belonged to his grandfather, Wiley King from Tennessee. He told me that originally his family name was also Kingfisher! I am about 99.99% sure he was Cherokee to some degree. I found Kings named as some of the descendants of Nancy Ward, who was also called the Beloved Woman of the Cherokees. Her father was a Kingfisher. There is a website listing something like eight generations of her line, and I think if you just type 'Descendants of Nancy Ward' into your search bar you will find her.
