Hello,

I am the grandson of the Elizabeth Kingston on your list by her marriage to Edward Carroll. The Kingstons and Carrolls were neighbors at one time in the late 1800's in Elma.

I have no thus far done little work on the Kingston part of may family, only because my mother's family has proved much easier to research until now.

I would be happy to hear from you. The last time I saw my Kingston relatives was at a family reunion in the late Fifties, as I recall.

Hello,

As I responded farther down on the thread, I am the grandson of the Elizabeth Kingston on your list - unfortunately, I have no additional information: Other than to say that my grandmother did tell me once that the family was from Drimoleague.

Nor have I had much luck on the family of Carrolls and Burkes into which my Grandmother Kingston married.

I will keep looking, and if you ever find any more info, I would appreciate hearing.

This is an ancient posting, but I will respond to it anyway in the hope that someone, sometime will come across it.

In response to KLF, I am a grandson of Elizabeth Kingston and, thus, g-grandson of John.

John m. Julia Holleran of Melancthon twp., Grey Co., Ont., Canada in 1863. He said in the registration that his father was P.(initial only) and his mother Mary Kelly. The Gen. Soc. Index transcription does NOT say that the parents are living in Ireland as some people seem to have supposed.

The 1871 Census Index of the same township shows a Paul Kingston, head of family, farmer, b. Ireland 1809, RC, living in Melancthon at that time. In the 1881 census he is still there, and with him is his slightly younger wife Mary, and a twenty-year old girl, Ellen, whose occupation is servant, with no relationship indicated to Paul and Mary. She was born in 1860 in Ontario.

There is also a marriage registration for a Jane Kingston, b. 1852 in Ireland, RC, living in Melancthon twp. at the time of her marriage in 1878 to Bernard Callaghan. Her parents are indicated as Paul and Mary Kingston. In an early 20th century census she indicated the year of her immigration as 1853. This would explain why this family is not in the 1851 Canadian census. When she is 60 she crossed the border to Buffalo, NY, evidently with the intention of moving there, and she gives her place of birth place as Timoleague, Co. Cork which is ten or so miles from Drimoleague, Co. Cork.

Mary Kingston, widow of Paul Kingston, b. 1809, is last shown in the 1891 Canadian Census as a widow living alone. Her married dau. Jane K. Callaghan is nearby but with many children. Mary Kingston does not appear in the next Canadian census. I would assume that she probably came down to Elma, NY about the time the 1891 Census was taken.

I have had no luck figuring out who the Ellen Kingston is from the 1881 Census, and without access to the details of the 1871 census I do not know who else was living with Paul Kingston at that time.

This is specifically about the Paul Kingston & Mary Kelly who are the parents of the John Kingston who m. Julia Holleran and moved to Erie Co., NY, USA

There have been a number of postings about this family, and some of what was in them does not jibe with information I have come across. If you are researching this family I would be happy to hear from you. Below is a summary of some of the information I have from official records, tombstones, etc.

Paul Kingston (b. 1808, Co. Cork, d. 1890) and Mary Kelly (b. 1817, d. 1895.) Were in Canada by 1857, lived in Melancthon Twp. Grey/Dufferin Co. the rest of their lives, and are both buried in St. Patrick's RC cemetery in Melancthon.

Children:

John Kingston (b. 1839, Ireland, d. 1904, Elma, NY) married in 1863 in Melancthon, Ont. to Julia Holleran (b. 1844, Ireland, d. 1920 Elma, NY) Both are indicated as living in Melancthon.

The following individuals also indicate Paul and Mary Kingston as their parents on various documents, and they come from or live in Melancthon twp. or are connected with the Paul and Mary Kingston of Melancthon via some documentation:

Samuel Kingston (b. 1837, Ireland, d. 1909, Ft. Erie, Ont., Canada)married Elizabeth Cusick (b. 1842, Ireland, d. 1912, Welland Co., Ont. The Mary Kingston who is buried in Melancthon died in Welland Co. and her death was attested to by Samuel Kingston.

Jane Kingston ( b. 1849, Ireland - she specified "Timoleague Co. Cork" on a border crossing document; d. after Sept. 1911, Canada or U.S.) Married Bernard Callaghan in 1878, specified Paul and Mary Kingston as her parents, and lived near them in Melancthon for much of her life. Circa 1911 she appears to have been moving to Buffalo, NY with two of her children - I cannot find her after that.

Ellen Kingston (b. 1857, Ontario, Canada, d. unknown) Appears in 1871 and 1881 Canadian censuses living with Paul and Mary Kingston. Have not found marriage or death registration.

This brings into question previously suggested connections with Drimoleague, the story that Mary Kelly died in Elma, NY and is buried there, and the identity of a Samuel Kingston who immigrated from Ireland to Canada, then Penn. and finally Indiana.

I would really like to hear from people who have information that confirms or conflicts with the above - preferably with documentaion or sources of some sort.

J. Carroll
