The early KIRBYS came from Massachusetts, possibly from the Lowell or Dartmouth area. They lived in Oneida County,
New York, Timothy KIRBY marrying Catherine W. HINCKLEY there abt. 1800. They had four (4) children that we know about at this time. Gershom Hinkley KIRBY was born January 1, 1805; one sister, Elizabeth KIRBY, born October 7, 1806; another sister, Emiline KIRBY, born February 27, 1809; and a final sister, Harriet KIRBY (birthdate unknown); all believed to have been born in or near Rome, Oneida Co., NY.

Timothy and Catherine (Hinckley) KIRBY and family moved to Strykersville (now in Wyoming Co., NY) ca. 1810/1811 and there obtained a Holland Land Co. Land Grant. Wyoming Co. History shows them to be among the earliest settlers there. Around 1815 they moved a few miles south to an area called "Currier's Corners." The record indicates that Timothy died there "a few years later."

Timothy and Catherine's only known son, Gershom Hinkley KIRBY, the namesake of his maternal grandfather, Gershom
HINCKLEY (1730-1809 - a veteran of the Revolutionary War), married Lucy MOON in 1830 and they settled in Parma, Monroe Co., NY. Their first child, Harriet, was born there in 1832, the second child, Lucretia, born in Pennsylvania in 1836,
and the other four (4) boys, Charles, Seth, Silas W. and David Allen were born in Illinois.

Elizabeth KIRBY married Abner Whitman TRUMBLE and they had nine children, including David KIRBY TRUMBLE, born June
16, 1845. They settled in Orleans Co., NY and Elizabeth and her husband, Abner, are buried there in the town of Murray.

Emiline KIRBY, a baptist missionary, removed to Chicago and later met and married William N. COWAN. They had nine (9) surviving children and one (1) who died in infancy. They eventually settled in Kansas and are buried there.

Harriet KIRBY (Harriet [KIRBY] RYDER'S aunt] is only known through the Diary of her sister, Emiline (KIRBY) COWAN, who mentions regularly corresponding with her.

Gershom Hinkley KIRBY (my 3rd Gr.-Grandfather) came to California from Illinois in 1849/1850 to seek his fortune,
leaving his family behind in Illinois. Tiring of this solitary existence, he sent for his family and they arrived in 1853. They settled in Soquel, Santa Cruz Co. Gershom built and operated a sawmill on the Soquel Creek.

The entire Gershom Hinkley KIRBY family, with the exception of Harriet and Silas W., eventually settled in Tulare Co., CA beginning in 1858. Harriet met and married Charles RYDER in Soquel and remained there until her death. Silas W. married Mary E. PAGLES, and they also remained in the Santa Cruz area. Silas W. and Mary had one child (possibly a stepchild for Silas W.) by the name of Annie. Lucretia married Julius ORTON; Charles married Rachel WRIGHT; Seth married Mary Jane COPELAND; and David Allen KIRBY (known most affectionately as "Uncle Al") never married.

Lucy (Moon) KIRBY (my 3rd Gr.-Grandmother) was the daughter of Job and Tryphena MOON, from New York. They are
also believed to have lived in or around the Monroe County area of New York in the late 1700's/early 1800's. Job MOON
is buried in the Shaffer Cemetery, Ogden, Monroe Co., NY. His stone inscription: "Job; d. February 1827 in the 51st year of his age." Lucy (Moon) KIRBY died in 1868 and is buried with her son, Silas W., in the Soquel Cemetery, Santa Cruz Co.

I am looking for information on any and all names listed, but particularly on any information regarding Timothy KIRBY (A veteran of the War of 1812).
