Hi Stan. Thanks for your reply.
My line of Kirkby's are from Cockermouth, Richard Kirkby, then Richard Henry Kirkby from Carnforth, and then to Australia. I do have generations back from Richard Kirkby as well. If you think there is a connection, that would be fantastic, as I have no connection with any live relatives, except here in Australia, of course. Regards, Jenny Wicks.

I was just an boy of 7 or 8 years old at the time so I would really like to find out what relatives I do have in Canada and the USA. I enjoy Genealogy research and have my own Family Tree so any help from your side would be great and likewise from myself.
Best regards
Stan

I have been searching for infomation on my husbands parents or any family for almost 20 years, the only information I had to work on were the details on his birth certificate,as he has very little memory if his early childhood, he was taken to a childrens home in Worksop when he was arond 3 or 4 years old, but when we contacted social services we were told that all the records of that period were lost in a fire. I have tried every BDM search I can find but cannot find any record of either of my husbands parents it's as if they never existed, but I will keep on trying although as my husband is now 75 I don't hold out much hope.
kind regards Kate

I know who she was!

Many thanks to Chris Goddard of Theatre UK and Peter Horton of the RCM.

She was born Louisa Baker, 8 November 1872.
Father: W.H. Baker, Confectioner, of 27 Oldham Road, Manchester Mother Mary Elizabeth Kirkby.

Name at the RCM: Louisa Kirkby Lunn (in brackets 'Professional name') Entered RCM as a student 27 April 1893 RCM Scholarship exam 22 February 1894 Entered RCM as an Open Scholar April 1894 Left RCM July 1896

I think Mary Elizabeth was a daughter of William Kirkby and Susannah Thomas. They had at least three other children, I think, including William, who was my great grandfather, so our family connection is true.

Louisa married William John Pearson in London in 1899. She died in 1930 aged 56 after a glittering and well-paid career in which she travelled the world.

My name is Brian Kirkby, I live in Sydney, George Williams Kirkby was my Great Great Grandfather. You can check out the family tree on www.kirkby.homestead.com any feedback would be appreciated. We have a distant cousin in NZ who died recently Gaynor Kirkby she had done a lot research on ancient Kirkbys in England. George came to Australia on the ship SS Hope with Charlotte Augusta Collins with 3 children from his first marraige. Edward Hope Kirkby, my Great Grandfather and the subject of much of the website was born on the ship Hope 16 days out of Melbourne on New Years Eve 1853. They family settled in Sandhurst later renamed Bendigo where George was a cordial and soft drink manufacturer. George Williams father was Joseph Kirkby who married a Francis Elizabeth Williams. He was descended from Samuel Kirkby and Elizabeth Deverile. Joseph kirkby farmed Rye Farm at Rye House. George was christened at Stanstead Abbotts in Hertfordshire just north of London.
William Kirkby (Manchester/Lancs)

I have been persuing a false trail for the last six months, thinking that my family were related to an Edward Kirkby (b 1866 in Ashton-u-lyme) and hence back through to Kirkby's in Notts and Lincs.

However, it turns out my Gr Grandfather was born in 1866 in Manchester but was not the one from Ashton-u-lyne (Both were found in 1901 census). Extensive searches of the Manchester, Salford and Lancashire records office has uncovered that Edwards father was a William Kirkby. All we know of him is that he was alive and living in Manchester in 1887 but we have no record of his birthdate, wife, death etc. He does not appear to be in any of the census data. If you know of a William with a son of 1866 that is not related to the Ashton-u-lyne branch. Can you please let me know.

Regards

John Kirkby
john@kco.net.au
I could say that maybe Madame Kirkby Lunn might of been like Bobby Moore, everyone in the east End of london claims to be related in some tenuous way, and many are, big families are the norm, so, if i was being scientific about it I could say that big aspirational families in Manchester like the higginbottoms claimed allegiance to the family in order to give their family vicotiran status??

maybe, however my mum beleives it as gospel and so did my nana, so who am I to disuade them.
Thanks for these messages. My grandmother's maiden name was Kirkby, and my mother was given this as a middle name. My nephew is called Kirkby.

My grandmother definitely believed Louise Kirkby Lunn was related, but I don't know how. I wonder how one could find out her real name if that's a stage one?

I have her date of birth as 8 Nov 1873 in Manchester (but of course she could have lied about her age) and her death as 17 Feb 1930. Can't find anyone with that name on the birth or death records for those dates though.

Please send me any information you have on the Kirkbys.I've attached a pic of the opera singer by the way.

Regards

madame kirkby lunn is a stage name, maybe a relative of my grandmother. The higginbottoms say that she was an aunt, but there is not much evidence of that, although my great grandfather had a brother who married someone and they gave their son the middle nake of kirkby, so there is some connection.

get in touch if you would like

markjudge@hotmail.com
