Seeking info on John Kirkley in Covington KY (b. 1811 or 1813 in PA)

My 3great grandfather was John Kirkley (Or John H. Kirkley or John H. "Kirkly"). According to census records (1840, 1860, 1870) he was born in PA in 1811 or 1813 and was living in Covington KY (Kenton Co.) by 1840 and a landowner in 1860. His son was John Kirkely (b. 1847) and *his* son was John Otten ("Otto") Kirkley (b. 1870).

I'm a bit of anovice, and I can find no info on John's birth or his parents in PA and don't know when he came to Ky. I assume there would be property tax records, but I can't find them. Any info or advice?

Hey Nadine... you still looking for Kirkley kin? From your postings, it looks like you are related to Thomas Kirkley who died in Dodge County, Ga. I believe he was married to Cynthia Cadwell. If so, my great-grandmother Elizabeth Yawn Cadwell Hutto was Cynthia's mother. I come from Elizabeth's second marriage to Henry Hutto. I am from prentiss Ms and my grandfather was John William
Kirkley born in 1919. His Fathers name was also John Kirkley both are from Jefferson Davis County Mississippi. There was also another john kirkley from jeff davis county who was a cousin of my grandfather he was buried in doublin cemetery in Carson Mississippi. If either of these dates correspond with any info you have feel free to respond I have recently completed a my family tree and would be willing to share any information you would like to know.

Wesley Hill Horton's first wife was Sarah "Sallie" Horton, daughter of Henry Horton and Rhoda Williams. Wesley Hill Horton and Sarah had children Henry Evans Horton, Rebecca Horton, and Welsey Mc Horton. Sarah Horton died in 1856. Sometime between 1856 and 1858 Welsey married Harriet Kirkley. Following is a newspaper transcript about Sarah Horton's death:

The newspaper Lancaster Ledger had the following on Sarah Horton: "Died in Hanging Rock, Lancaster District, SC on Apr 6, 1856, Mrs. Sarah Horton, wife of Wesley Hill Horton, and daughter of Henry Horton, late of Lancaster District, SC, in her 32nd year".

May I ask who John William's father and mother were. From my research, I think that John, Aquilla's father has an older son whose name was John. A. J. Yates was 1/4 Indian from what has been told me since I was a child. I have been trying to find out about his father and grandfather for 2 years now and have come to a complete halt. Do you have any information you could share?

Aquilla and A. J. Yates are my great grandparents. Her father's name was John Kirkley. He is buried in the same cemetery. The cemetery you are speaking of is in Covington County.

It is probable that these four 'Kirkley'girls are the daughters of James (Lewis James?) Kirkley and Harriet Horton.
Harriet Horton was the daughter of this Molsy Horton.
So they are living with their grandmother.
In the 1840 Census, Lancaster Co. SC (just north of Kershaw)
there is a James KirKLAND with wife and four daughters.
I believe this is actually James KirKLEY and wife Harriet Horton and the four girls.
Where are James and Harriet in 1850?
Did they die?
Did she die and James left the girls with grandma?

This Hugh Kirkley and family were from Chesterfield Co. SC and
migrated to Indiana in the 1820's.

What I would like to know is why: SC to Indiana??

You are descended from Daniel Charles Kirkley, b. abt. 1844, northern Kershaw Co., SC. At this time his parents aren't known but may be Noel Kirkley, b. abt. 1810, d. 1841 and Susannah _____. He was in the 15th. SC Infantry, Kershaw's Brigade and lost a leg at Chickamauga in the fall of 1863.
He returned to Camden, married Bouvette Smith and began having children. He was in business with Bouvette's father and was mayor and post master of Camden. Bouvette died and he married 'Nanny' Walker and had more children. He died in 1899.

I found a McDonald Kirkley in the Arkansas Death Index 1914-1950 stating that he died Feb. 11, 1920. The census he was in says it was done on Feb 17, 1920, but I thought the date could be wrong. This is right around when my great-grandfather died, my grandfather was really young, and he was born in 1918.

I still have not found any other information about a McDowell O'donold Kirkley, though this is what we believe his name to be.

McDowell O'donold Kirkley or McDonald R. Kirkley??

I'm researching the Kirkleys and have gotten stuck with my great-grandfather. I was told his name was McDowell O'donel Kirkley, married to Sylvia Marie McNew. They had a son named Raymond O'donel Kirkley Sr.

When I was putting him in my tree, the "hint" that came up was for McDonald R. Kirkley b. abt 1890 in Arkansas. So at first I thought I had the name wrong. There is a census record showing him married to Sylvia, living with her and her parents, and their son Raymond O'donel.

Then in searching military records, I found McDowell O'donold Kirkley b. 22 Sep 1889 in Stone County, Missouri and he lived in Stuttgart, Arkansas.

I thought possibly the name is wrong on one of the records, and that McDowell and McDonald are the same person... Both my dad and his sister told me their grandfather's name was McDowell. I can't find anything else about either McDowell OR McDonald.

Is anyone else researching these Kirkleys and have any information to share?

Saw your old post on the message board re: the Kirkleys. My Kirkley ancestors were from Chesterfield, SC. My 2nd Great Grandfather was born 17 Mar 1803 and his wife was Isabella Murchinson. My GGrandfather was Benjamin Franklin Kirkley. He, along with a number of other families from that area of SC moved to Northwest Louisiana. If you are interested in sharing information on the Kirkleys, just let me know. I am sure this is the same family. By the way, the only Kirkley that I find with a Georgia connection in my information is William Patterson Kirkley.

Among my ancestors is a Julia Ann Elizabeth Kirkley who was married to a James H. Watson. They were in Walton Co., Georgia on the 1840 and 1850 census. By 1860 they were living in Cobb Co., Georgia in order to be with their daughter Winnerford. I believe that Julia Ann Elizaberth Kirkley was born in Chesterfied, SC in 1823 and was probably the daughter of a John Kirkley Jr., born about 1800, who was himself the son of a John Kirkley Sr., born about 1775-80. Do these John Kirkley's appear in anyones information and can you help me verify that this information is correct.

Hello...I have John Listed as John T Kirkley who was married to Permelia Emeline Hayton...Maybe that info will help. She seems to have gone by Amelia, born 10-May-1857, died 8-Dec-1932...These are my great grandparents and I have pictures that I am trying to SLOWLY add. Their son is John B Kirkley born March 8 1857, died Sept 1929.His wife was Emeline Hayden born 1857 no death date. If you need more please feel free to contact me. Kent - Just now ran into this your old posting. Was interested in "Jesse Hurst" of SC you mentioned as marrying "(unknown) Kirkley", sister of your "Noel Kirkley." I have info that says Jesse D. Hurst b. 1783 married "Hester Percelah (Priscilla?) _______". Some confusion as to Hester's date of birth according to differing census. Jesse and Hester had only two children. Jesse bought a male slave from his father, Isaac Hurst’s estate sale for $425, and a horse for $67. The inventory of Isaac’s property showed a “bed furniture and stead - value $12.66" in possession of Jesse. The 1830 Sumter County, South Carolina census shows Jesse, age 30-40, wife age 20-30, and possibly her mother or his mother, age 60-70, living with them. It also indicates one of them was blind. Apparently Hester may have died before March, 1832, as one court document for Isaac’s estate lists “Jesse Hurst” as “widowed and children.” But, the 1860 Census for Darlington County, South Carolina lists Jesse as 77 years old, along with wife. Jesse and his family remained in South Carolina while other children of his father, Isaac Hurst, (youngest born 1815) moved to AL and some eventually on into FL. Although not my direct line, I believe this may be the Hurst family from your info. My info did not have Hester's surname, but believe your info provides that. Thanks. Thought this info might also help you fill in missing sister's name "Hester P." for your Noel Kirkley's line. Sorry, but I know nothing about Hester's roots that I could forward.

I too have Kirkley's of Indiana. My grandfather was John H. Kirkley born June 1, 1905 in Carhile, Indiana. He was the son of Sherman Richard Kirkley and Charlotte Jones. Both were born in 1880. Sherman father was John B Kirkley born 1857. John B Kirkley's wife was Emaline Hayden born 1857.
John B kirkleys father was Daniel Kirkley which I have no other information on. It appears that every Kirkley i talk to has no info on this guy either. So the trail ends here for me. I hope this has helped you.

I wish I knew who Thomas Kirkley's parents were. I think it's likely that he was the son of either John (d. 1830s) or Thomas Kirkley (d. 1840s) listed in Chesterfield County. These two seem to be the catch-all for any unknown Kirkleys at that time. He would fit nicely as the son of Thomas listed in 1830. And this old Thomas seems to have died in the 1840s which is when your Thomas (b 1803) moved back to SC. But that could all be coincidence. These Kirkleys have been hard to unravel.

He is my gggrandfather and I have a fairly complete picture of his descendants but not his ancestors. Any info would be appreciated and I will share what I have. I descend through his son Benjamin Franklin Kirkley and Louvone Ann Graham who migrated to Red River Parish, Louisiana.

I know that Kirkleys intermarried with the Miles family. We do have a family bible with old names and marriages into the Kirkley family. I noticed that you made a correction on the ancestry.website regarding Jackson Milas. You posted that it was Jackson Miles. Yes, you are correct. He was my great-great grandfather. We have a picture of him and his wife, also a Miles. Elizabeth Jane Miles was the daughter of William Miles b.1810 of Chesterfield Co, Mt. Crogan, SC. She married her cousin, Edward Jackson "Jack" Miles of Mt. Crogan as well.
I thought that it was unusual for someone to comment on my Jackson. Wanted to know how you knew anything about him. Do you know of him in your research and if so, why. Love to help you with Kirkley marriages. Please help me with Jackson.

Your John A. Kirkley that married Dicey Blackwell was the son of Rachel Kirkley (b abt 1782, d 1862) and I believe Richard Kirkley. See my previous post as to why I believe Rachel's husband was Richard. Richard died before 1830. I descend from John A.'s brother Asa. Richard and Rachel's children were: Mary (married Thomas Ogburn), Elizabeth (married John Sullivan), John A, Asa, Thomas, Rosanna (married James Dunn), Una (married Clyburn Blackwell), and Sarah (married Abraham Sullivan). A suit brought by Elizabeth Sullivan for the settlement of Rachel's estate proves all her children.

I have no idea who Richard's parents were. There are so few records left (due to the burning of the Chesterfield Co courthouse by Sherman) that it is hard to determine much about those early Kirkleys in Chesterfield Co.

I descend from John A Kirkley and Dicey Blackwood Kirkley who are buried at White Plains Baptist church in Jefferson SC. John A Kirkley and Dicey Blackwood son was Columbus(Christopher) Kirkley who married Mary Alice Jordan. I have pictures of them. Their daughter is my grandmother who was born in 1896 and died in 1978. She was Lillie Inez Kirkley and she married James Lonnie Huneycutt of Stanly County in Chesterfield County in 1917. They lived most of the 20's in Stanly then moved to Moore, then Lee, then Orange. My grandfather died in 1937 in Durham. He is buried in Stanly Co, NC with his mother and father George and Martha Huneycutt Crisco. My grandmother is buried at Mr Herman Baptist Church in Hillsbourgh(Orange County), NC.
My dad us Bobby Columbus Honeycutt. My grandmother named him Columbus after her Dad.
Looking for help in how to tie into the Chesterfield County Kirkleys.

My grandmother was Lillie Inez Kirkley. She was born in Jefferson Twship in Chesterfield County in 1896. She married James Lonnie Huneycutt in 1917 in Chesterfield Co. James Lonnie was from Stanly Co., NC. Her father was Columbus Kirkley and Mary Alice Jordan. Columbus Kirkley father and mother were John A Kirkley and Dicy Blackwell. Columbus Kirkley and Mary and John and Dicey are buried at White Plains Baptist near Jefferson. I am not sure how I tied to all the other Kirkleys there. Would be willing to share with all the researchers in the area.

Sorry for the delay. I just saw your post. It was on a second page that I didn't notice. The Kirkleys have been very difficult to say the least. I still don't know how all the ones in Chesterfield Co were connected. (I'm writing this from memory so I hope I get it right.) I do know that John and Richard Kirkley were living in close proximity and had land on the east side of Lynches Creek near Rocky Creek (on the border with Kershaw Co and very close to edge of Lancaster Co). Thomas Kirkley had land a little ways away on Black Creek (closer to the 'center' of Chesterfield Co.). There was also a Robert Kirkley that had land in the northern portion of the county along Big Thompsons Creek near the NC border. I believe those are the three areas with Kirkleys. I think John, Thomas and Richard may have been brothers but there is no evidence to support that claim. Based on census information, Willis would fit as either a son of John or Thomas. (Richard's children are known.) I do think Willis may have owned land near Lynches/Rocky Creek which would make you think he might be a son of John. However, Richard died before 1830 and by the time his wife died in 1862, she no longer owned much of his original land. So Willis could have bought land from her and just happened to end up near Lynches Creek. Good Luck!
