Jean I have considerably more information on the family since my last posting - Mary Ward was my great x 3 grandmother - interestingly her mother was a Hamilton... if you email me at lynnemccubbin@sky.com I'll pass on the info - they were certainly what would nowadays be called a dysfunctional family!!

Cheers

I never knew my dad but Mom says his name was Kenneth Kirkwood. I lived in Texas when I was little but was conceived in Florida. Mom got pregnant in 1970 - and I have no idea if this man had a twin brother, but I have twin boys myself.

If this sounds at all like the right timeline, please let me know! :-)

Hi Jemma,

David McGimpsey's wife was Mary Ward, and I believe they married on November 14, 1852 (Barony district IGI # M119691).

My great grandmother Mary McGimpsey, was brought up by Mary Ward as her daughter, although Mary's biological mother was called Mary Hamilton, according to her marriage and death certificates. Her father's name is given as David McGimpsey, so I am unsure as to whether Mary Ward's husband fathered the child with another woman, or more likely, Mary's teenage son David was the father, and she agreed to raise the child.
I believe that my great grandmother who married John Hillhouse, may have been very fond of Elizabeth Kirkwood, and one of her daughters was named after her. A granddaughter, (my Auntie Betty), was also given the name Elizabeth Kirkwood Hillhouse. She is still alive and is 80 years old now. My own mother although very frail and 83 years old, remembers 2 girls from the Clyde Valley area (Dalserf?) who used to visit her Granny Hillhouse. I believe that they were possibly Dempster and Elizabeth's daughters. If you know of any of the background of my great grandmother's relationship with Elizabeth and her husband Dempster, I would love to hear about it, and if you have a picture of Elizabeth that would be amazing.

Jean

Hello Kirkwood family. I have been researching Zina Kirkwood and Herbert Elmer Irish who lived in Black Hawk, Iowa. Zina's parents were David and Amanda Kirkwood of Ill. Zina and Herbert married in Waco, TX 1917. I am wondering if anyone has any information about these two? They lived in Waterloo, IA from 1932 until their deaths in 1961-62. I am trying to figure out if they had any children. Their obits reference two deceased children but do not mention any others. Any help on these two would be appreciated!
Judith

Hello Mildred
Robert Kirkwood, my GGGgrandfather lived at Carnmoney County Antrim. He was transported to Australia in 1831. His parents were Robert b abt 1750 and Margaret nee Lewis also 1750. Could be a connection but the dates seem a little out. Kirkwood is quite a common name in N Ireland. I will certainly take a note of your names and when in Belfast next week look out for them.
Stuart

Hello Stuart,
I really picked up on your message when I read that you will be researching in Belfast. My Kirkwoods also came from the Belfast area. I think they lived outside the town and I don't know if it was County Antrim or County Down. My ancestors were William Kirkwood (b. 1763) and Mary Kernahan (Kernoghan, Carnohan, etc) (b. abt 1760). I estimate that they may have married about 1780. In 1788/89 they, with their 4 children and their furniture came to Pennsylvania in their own sailing vessel. (Either the Kirkwoods or the Kernahans must have had a shipping business.) I would love to know more about them. Someone has told me that William was the son of a Robert and Margaret Kirkwood but I have no supporting data. Their children were William b. abt 1782, Mary b. abt 1784, Hugh b. abt. 1786 and Samuel b. abt 1787. If you happen onto any family that looks like this please save the info for me. Thanks.

Hello Kerrie. Many thanks for coming back to me. As I mentioned I am also from the line of David Simpson Kirkwood followed by his eldest son Robert Cooper Kirkwood,(Emma's brother) and then his third child Stuart David Kirkwood- my grandfather. My father was Stuart Charles Kirkwood who served in the RAAF in WW2. I am aware of Rosalind although I have never met her. I did meet Madie several times. She came to see my Dad who lived in the UK when she was researching the original Cooper geneology during the 1960s,70s. I also visited her when she lived at a retirement village in Belrose NSW in the early 80s. Her father was Robert Cooper Kirkwood. Although my Dad lived most his life after the war in the UK he died during a visit to Sydney in 1981.Re Edmund Panton at Waverley the cemetery record does show his name as Edmund Campbell Panton but as you noted his 2nd name was Goulburn who died as a baby in 1893. Not sure how this confusion came about. Rosalind is also buried in the plot. I did try to find out who administers this plot as the cemetery told me it is still registered to someone but never had any replies. I am in Belfast next week and hope to find more info on the Kirkwoods prior to transportation. This may be difficult as a lot of records were lost in a fire during the uprisings. My wife Sarah and I will be in Sydney from April 5th to April 12th and would love to meet you if possible. If you can let me know how I can contact I will arrange. Best Regards Stuart.

Hello Stuart, Great to hear from you.I live in Sydney, and it would be good to meet you next time you come to Oz.My line is from David Simpson Kirkwood, married Emma Anne Cooper, their daughter Emma Cooper Kirkwood, married William Edmund Panton, their son Alan Clement Panton, married Mary Smith McKellar (my grandparents) their son Alan Edmund Panton married Phyllis Valerie Stephenson. (my parents)I'm not sure who Edmund Campbell Panton was, William and Emma lost a baby, Edmund Goulburn Panton, who was buried at Waverly cemetery.I actually met your Dad's aunt when I was a child. I think she would have been my Dad's cousin.I still have two of Dad's sisters alive. The one who may still remember things is the eldest Elaine
, known as Michelle. I am interested in the Kirkwoods lives before they came here.Good luck with your research. Keep in touch. Cheers Kerrie

Hello Kerrie
My name is Stuart Kirkwood. I was interested to come across your name on Ancestry.com. I am also from the line of David Simpson Kirkwood who was my who GG Grandfather. I have been researching the family for some time now and have revealed much interesting info. In original research done by Madie Edmunds (my dads aunt) DSK's father Robert was described as a free settler from Ireland. In fact it turned out he was a convict who was transported along with his eldest son James in 1831 being convicted for forgery. In fact I am visiting Belfast in 2 weeks time to investigate further.(I live in UK) Also last year when in Sydney I came across the name Edmund Campbell Panton in Waverley cemetery who I think was a grandson of DSK. I am visiting Oz again in March/Apl and it would be good to meet if possible. We must be some kind of distant cousins. Look forward to hearing from you.

I am helping an in-law with their genealogical research - they are descended through Elizabeth Wilson KIRKWOOD (1858-1915). We wonder how the KIRKWOOD family name started for this lineage? It appears that her parents - Jame BUNTIN (1822-1881) and Jean BLAIR (1827-1902) had 13 NY-born children, all with the last name of KIRKWOOD. Thanks for the clarification.

I understand that Walter was the son of Elizabeth Cooper who married Nicol Kirkwood in Lanarkshire, Scotland. After Nicol's death, she married James Nelson and immigrated to the U.S. Their daughter is my greatgrandmother. I recently located Walter's obit, which I am attaching.
Hi, I am researching my family history and have come across some "common" descendants. I am the great great great granddaughter of Alexander Kirkwood and Ferguson Renwick (through Elizabeth Kirkwood and Jane "jeannie" Watson. My grandfather Thomas Watson Robertson was born in 1903 in Tollcross Scotland and died in 1988.) I live in the city of Wollongong, NSW, Australia and would appreciate any information you can provide. I have viewed some photos of these relatives and am blown away that the photos exist.

I think Jane is either a daughter b. 1838 to John or another relative. The list of John's kids I have says this is Jehu (because another John D. was born to John, Sr.) but writing could have been sloppy to actually say, Jane.

From Locations that showed up when searching under James with the birthdate of 1743, I searched for marriage information and narrowed it down to the most logical possibilties by date range and location of marriage (2 in Boston*, which did not list the exact date).

1752 - 1809 James to Abignil (Abigail?) Bell*
1752 - 1809 James to Eliza Prince*
1760. Jan. 16. Duffy, Catharine, and James Kirkwood

I think the birthdate for John is an approximation based on Census records. I have information on the White side of the family but am stuck on the Kirkwoods. We do know that John's father was James who was born around 1743 and is buried in Carrollton, Ohio. Our relative was John H's brother Franklin. He was my husband's great grandfather. I would love to see how your line moved forward and would be glad to share any of our information.
Barb kirkwoodb@aol.com

If the woman buried next to James is his wife, she was a lot younger than he was. Her name had to be short...4 letters. JA is readable, the rest is not. James was likely born in the early 1740s based on his death date and the age on the headstone. So he could be the one who arrived in South Carolina. However, according to one of the histories of the Scot-Irish, so many Scots were arriving that the ports refused to allow them all to land. So the captains sailed up or down the coast until they found a spot where they could get them to land. So, many were illegal aliens and we may never find a record of him arriving here. To locate him, I have looked at some of the records of James Kirkwood who left Scotland, Ireland or England. There were quite a few considering that Kirkwood is not all that common. I looked up some of the old records from Scotland but couldn't make any connections from what I located.
I doubt that he was Capt. James because our family appears to be illiterate until much later. James could not sign his name and neither could John. Some of the younger boys appear to have signed one of the census rolls and were "in school". How did you come up with a list of wives? You can always reach me off Ancestry at kirkwoodb@aol.com
Barb

This has been the million dollar question. There were only three listings of Kirkwood in the 1810 census, Archibald, Thomas, and Nathaniel. 1820, shows Hugh, Willam, Nathaniel, William and Widow Kirkwood. William, Hugh, William and Nathaniel, all list children under 10 and from 10-15.

Also Adam came to Lawrence County Pa after having lived in Westmoreland, then Toby Twp, Armstrong co, in 1840 and Lawrence in 1850. A Hugh Kirkwood, born in Westmoreland, 1840 Toby twp, Arm. Co, in 1850 in Lawrence County PA. They both went to the Civil war on the same day 17 Oct 1861 from Wampum, PA. Hugh died in the War. Also grandchildren of both Hugh and Adam married each other.

Were they brothers or cousins?? We have never been able to determine. Adam is my husbands great great grandfather.

This may be info you already have and if so sorry, but I too would love to know who his parents were. I will keep checking to see if you get any feedback.

Have you rule out our James being Capt. James Kirkwood (mariner) who arrived in Boston on April 16, 1767 ? Or possibly the 13 y/o James and 15 y/o John who came by boat t So.Carolina in between 1763 - 1773 ?

I haven't yet and almost nixed that one, but who is to say that the ship they took and they traveled on to meet up with family further north or just moved to VA or PA?

The most possible women for James wife are: Abigail Bell, Catherine Duffy or Eliza Prince in that order. Will try to look through those histories since this week is supposed to be free until Sept 5th. However, some records still will come up unless I fill out a "trial" and put in CC number. :o\
John was born in Virgina or Pennsylvania depending on which census record you look at. He did not emigrate from Scotland. James is another question. His grave did not indicate a birth location. The famly legend is that they are Scot-Irish, meaning that they had a stop off in Ireland for some time. Interesting though, three rows back from James Kirkwood's grave is a pair of sisters, maiden name Kirkwood. They were born in Scotland. One had married. The unmarried one, Jane I think, had a will. The person dealing with her estate was from Pennsylvania but I have not followed up on that yet.
Barb kirkwoodb@aol.com
We are indeed cousins of some sort. We have tracked back the Kirkwood line beginning with just a name for John's great grand father. It has been quite an adventure. We have documents that establish that James is the father of John. James is buried in a cemetery in Carrollton, Ohio next to a JA__ Kirkwood and on the other side, the little daughter of a Samuel & Isabel Kirkwood. I am writing from work so I don't have any of my records around. Samuel and John had some land dealings where it indicated James was his father. There were also transactions between James and Samuel, however, in those sales, it doesn't specifically identify a familial relationship. There was a third male Kirkwood who was a witness to one of the transactions. John had agreed to take care of his father for the rest of his life. The gravestone shows a death date of 183?...I think. John packed up the family and moved to the Bright area of Indiana near Dearborn. Another Kirkwood family moved nearby (I think named James) and I assume that may be the eldest son of John and Mary. We have a pretty good handle of my husband's line,,,,I think James, John (and Mary White), John (and Eliza Jane McGahan) , Frank, Henry, Richard and then my John.
I have some electronic docs of these transactions and somewhere a picture of the graves. However, we are in the middle of a move from Indiana to the DC area and I won't have my material for a couple of weeks. You can reach me direct at kirkwoodb@aol.com
We are indeed cousins. I have just recently been in contact with someone in the Ayr location of Scotland and got the addresses of ALL Kirkwoods in this vicinity. I plan to send inquiries to them, since some of the "kids" names are rather unusual: Elihu and Ralph. I am suspecting James (and John) came over from Scotland and that is why we have no other info anywhere. Here is my email if you wish to contact me directly to compare information. pjdxxxwa@mac.com .... Delores

William's parents were John Kirkwood b. 1793 and Mary White b. 1804.
I am also looking for John's father who might be James Kirkwood b. 1743 d. 1839. (Not sure about this). Family burried in Zion Cemetery, Monitor Indiana. I've been stuck on John and James for a while. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm looking for descendants and info for Kirkwoods who lived in Martinsville, Indiana and surrounding towns btween 1880 and early 1900's. Thomas and Hannah Kirkwood had six children. George, Charles, Anna, Ruth, Martha, and Katie. I believe Katie may have died in childhood. Anna had 5 children Bert, Curtis, Viola, Walter, and Hannah. Walter and Curtis were put into foster care and Curtis died in the Indiana Children's home in 1909. Bert lived with his Aunt Ruth for many years. If any of these names might be in your family tree... please write. I have more info and love to share. Thanks, Scott

DAVID AND MAUD SUSAN KIRKWOOD - CHILDREN

I am researching the family of DAVID AND MAUD SUSAN KIRKWOOD nee JOHNSTONE but I'm having difficulty in finding their children. I know a son William was born in 1905, twins (I think) Esther and Andrew in 1908 and then I have a huge gap until I find David born in 1930 all in Scotland.
Can anyone help in establishing if there were any other children during the 1908 to 1930 missing years.
regards
Norah

George McKee was my great grandfather. His son, Frank, my maternal grandfather. Millard Kirkwood married my great aunt, Rachel McKee, Frank's sister. My father was Victor McKee. I remember Millard and Rachel well from my early teen years.
