James Kiser 1829-1899

My Mother and I have been searching for info on her Gr Grandfather, James Kiser. We have 3 possible birth years, 1829 from his headstone, 1832 from the 1880 census, and 1835 according to his widows' pension application filed in 1931, by Catherine 'Kate' (Magel/Darnell) Kiser. His name was spelled 3 different ways maybe because he could not write, and other folks would spell it Keyser, or Kieser, or Kiser. Most folks that knew him used Kiser. He lived in Monthalia, Gonzales County, Texas since his marriage to Kate in 1872. They had 7 children: Oscar (who died young), William Henry, Phillip Houston, Minnie Lee, Lucy, Odo, and Gus Eddie. We have no info on any siblings or parents for James, does any of this ring a bell?

Dear Jonathan,

My father is able to help you with Noah Winthrop Kiser's family information because we are his descendants. Noah Winthrop was my Dad's great-grandfather. He married sometime around 1890 and them moved to Carter County, KY in 1901. He was a circuit riding Baptist preacher and had 6 children. He lived to be 69 and is buried in the family cemetery in Poplar, Ky. John Arthur Kiser was my Dad's grandpa, and then his dad was Vernon Kiser and then my Dad is the last Kiser, his name is Gary. Sadly, my dad has all girls and thus the Kiser name ended as we're all married.

Dad says he'd be willing to talk with you, but he doesn't have a computer. You can email me back if you are interested and I'll provide you with their phone number.

Kind regards,
Lynette Kiser-Baldwin
email me at grad9700@yahoo.com

I've been doing research on the Kiser surname and I came across the information regarding your great-grandfather's siblings. The 1900 U.S. Census for Bethania, Forsyth, North Carolina shows all of the Kiser siblings living with Calvin Miller the head of the family and his wife, Sarah Miller. It shows they have a son; Henry Miller and a daughter; Vina Miller, the rest of the children listed are the names you have mentioned (Kiser) and they are listed as step-children. Hattie Kiser 15 yrs old, Lewis Kiser 13 yrs old, James Kiser 12 yrs old, Samuel Kiser 8 yrs old, John Kiser 6 yrs old, Ellis Kiser 5 yrs old, Amos Kiser 4 yrs old, and Tency Kiser 2 yrs old. If you don't already have this information, I hope you find it helpful. Feel free to contact me anytime. Also, the photo of the census is sideways so you have to twist you head to see it. Have a great day. Toni

I have hit a brick wall in McNairy Co., Tenn., where my Kisers were from. I, too, heard that they dropped the "a" during the war. My great-grandfather was Henry Eugene Kiser, married Eliza James, and lived in McNairy Co., Tenn., died about 1884/85. My grandfather was Dennie Austin Kiser, brother was Charles Kiser, sister Net, and another sister Adeline. Dennie, Charles, and Net all ended up in Nebraska.

My mother said that the Kisers were Holland Deutch, poss. from Penn.? Don't know much more than that.

This is amazing to me. I just started looking into the Kiser side and I find you. It is just such a small world. Do you still live in the Fletcher area? I don't know if I mentioned it - but I was born in Indiana and moved to Ohio to work in Sidney. My parents divorced when I was young and my Dad remarried soon after the divorce. This caused a major rift between my Dad & his family, so I grew up not being around them. I had absolutely no idea Grandma's family was from Ohio. My Dad mentioned it to me one day in a phone call and I nearly fell off my chair. He didn't know Sidney was close to Fletcher. It felt really weird to me that I drove past the family "home" every day to work and probably worked with relatives I didn't know. I contacted Uncle Bruce - I hadn't spoken to him in probably 10 years - because Dad told me he had done quite a lot of genealogy. It feels bizare to of come full circle - and not even know it.

Uncle Bruce told me there was an actor named Monte Blue. He played Native American roles. He said Grandma would tell him he was related to the actor. When Uncle Bruce looked into the family he found a Kiser had married a Mary Blue. "Blue" was a Wyandot or Shawnee name. So I think there is Native American blood in our mix. That was helpful for me to know. My skin color is a bit olive and tans dark in the summer. I had no idea where it came from - but now I'm pretty sure where I got it. I don't know if your side of the family exhibits that trait or not.

I don't know if Bruce Kiser ever knew about your Great Grandma. I don't know if he did know and skipped town on the railroad. All of my Grandma's sisters have past except 1 and she is in a nursing home. I doubt however if Bruce K. knew about your Great Grandma he would not of told his youngest daughter. I'm thinking he may not of known because the family remained pretty close even after he moved away. I would of thought they would of shunned him if they knew. I might be completely wrong - we may never know who knew what and when.

My Uncle is not on-line so I'm going to print your posts with all the information you have given me and snail mail it to him so he can include it with his information.

When my Grandma was still alive I asked her why her mother's birth certificate said her mother's father was Bruce Kiser. First she looked shocked and ask me how I found that out. She didn't talk or say much about it. So, I assumed it was kept pretty hushed. I wish I would have asked her more about it later. Illegitimate children did occur back then. I doubt it was accepted, however. I have a family book that was filled out by my great grandma, and she listed James Marrs as her step-father. However, she did not list her father. The Gump family is quite large, most of them lived in Flecher Ohio. Many are buried in the Flecher cemetery. They are related and connected to the Studebaker family. The ones who made the wagons and later the cars. I'm guessing we must have some Kiser in there, my great grandma did not look much like her mother, so I assumed she must have looked like Bruce.

Hi there. I talked to my Uncle Bruce and he always thought that Bruce Kiser worked for the railroad and that is what brought him west to Daleville. The New York Central Railroad went through Daleville - I'm not sure the year however. My Uncle was not aware of any children in Ohio. Uncle Bruce said that he didn't remember making any trips to Ohio to visit family - but many times Kiser family from Ohio would come to visit the Kiser family in Indiana. Bruce Kiser had a farm 3 miles outside Daleville. He lost the farm at some point. He had put the farm up as collateral for a car lot his brother opened in Fletcher Ohio. The brother lost the car lot & Bruce K. lost the farm. Bruce Kiser ended up living with his oldest daughter for many years in Daleville. That is about as much as I have right now.

How far are you on a family tree? How big is the Gump side of the family. My Uncle might be rather interested in this formerly unknown side of the family.

Sarah Gump did marry James Marrs, and they had a son, Alva Marrs. In her adult years, I can only find her listed as Sadie L instead of Sarah. My grandmother always referred to her as her grandma Sadie. My Great grandmother also took the last name Marrs and went by Marie I Marrs, as her maiden name. James and Sadie L Marrs divorced. I have no proof of that, but was told that by my grandma. Sadie married again to William H. Wolaver. Sadie L. Wolver, died March 13, 1932 in Miami County.

I've got a call in to my Uncle about this. I talked to my Dad and he didn't recall any talk in the family about why Bruce Kiser left OH - but my Dad is one of the youngest siblings. Uncle Bruce is the oldest and most likely to recall these things. The Kiser family was rather religious - a few of the men were preachers or deacons in the German Baptist & First Baptist Society - although to my knowledge Bruce's father did not hold any of these positions.

My Dad seemed to recall Bruce Kiser was a Moonshiner - but in looking at my Uncle's notes it appears the farmer down the road would hide his shine in Bruce Kiser's farm for pickup. Not sure if this is acurate - but it is what I have....

It might be a couple of days before my Uncle calls back but I'll reply to this thread when I hear from him.

Did Sarah Gump marry later? What was her married name? I tried to look her up on the census and the only one I found was 1880. I figured she got married and I couldn't find her under "Gump" anymore.

This is facinating to me. At some point Bruce moved to Daleville Indiana and I was never sure why he moved when all his family was still in Ohio. What year was your Great Grandmother born? Bruce Kiser was married in 1902 in Daleville Indiana. He had 7 daughters with wife Mary Isabelle Walters. Their 2nd oldest was my Grandmother - Thelma Shirley. All of my information I've gotten from my Uncle (Bruce Pederson). My uncle describes Bruce Kiser as a good fiddle player, had many friends and everyone loved him. My uncle went fox hunting with him when B. Kiser was 80 years old. Interesting enough my Dad who was Bruce Pederson's younger brother met Bruce Kiser only once. I've wanted to talk to my Uncle about the reason Bruce Kiser moved to Indiana. I'll call him and see if he knows anything.

The Kiser's have been in the US for a very long time. Bruce's grandfather was John P. Kiser - the first white man to settle in Brown Township, Miami County. John's father Peter & grandfather John Johannes served in the Revolutionary War. John Johannes Kiser immigrated to Virginia from Baden Wurttemberg Germany.
