His grandfather was Mervyn Kitching and was owner of Kitching funeral home in Waterdown. Would you know anything about this Kitching family?

You are quite correct, Gordon Kitching married Vi chambers whose real first name is Eva. He was my great uncle and he had a brother named Howard and Glen. I knew them both but I knew Glen even more. I am not from the kitchings other than by marriage but i grew up around them most of my life. I work with one of the younger ones and a few of them are my cousins by marriage today. Gordon, Howard and Glen are all gone now. There is lots to tell you about them. Are you still searching for this info?

I think Martha died fairly young. I have seen Seymour Kitching's obituary and it makes no mention of her. It says that Seymour is survived by his son Charles and two married daughters. I know that Ella and Fannie were married and lived well past 1911. This leads me to believe that Martha passed away between 1900 and 1911

If this is indeed your family line send me your email address and I will send you the rtf file directly as well as put you in touch with the present-day John Kitching who is descended from Franklin James Percival Kitching. Valentine also had a son called Valentine and it is possible that the 2 men would have been close enough in birth for one to be the best man for his cousin

Do hope this helps.
Thankyou for your helpful reply Dr.K, this makes a little sense to me as I have found a Wilson connection since posting my message, apparently a Gladys Wilson was related somehow to Harold and Gladys was also a cousin of our grandfather, it all seems a bit complicated! It sounds like this is the same Harold that we both have the England Kitching tree for (I do now think it was Harold W. as opposed to Harold M. which I put in my original message, I just got the initial upside down!). Thank you for giving me the little Wilson clue which I will now follow up...
Thanks, Deborah

Dear Deborah,
I believe the father of my friend, John F. Kitching, was Harold W. Kitching (married Ethelwyn Wilson) who lived at Kitcholm Farm. So if that is the Harold whose line you already have in your possession, then I have no further data for you, as all my data on the Kitchings in England came from Harold's file.
Dr. K.

Hello, I spotted these posts whilst searching for Kitchings in Nassagaweya, Ontario. Does anyone know if anyone from this family came back to Westmorland, UK? I was getting on quite nicely with my Kitchings from Bampton/Longsleddle (Westmorland) tree when someone introduced a different Kitching tree which ended with John Kitching that emigrated to Ontario as well detailed in your messages. I have tried to investigate a link between the two trees as apparently there is a connection (distant cousins?? - our grandfather used to visit Kitcholm regularly) but I am failing to find it - is it possible a Kitching came back to Westmorland and married another Kitching?? Any info would be gratefully recieved, Deborah
p.s. the tree I have follows this family back to 1500s and was produced by a Harold M Kitching, Ontario

Hi Audrey and Adrian,

I am looking for history of George Kitching b.1758 of St Cuthbert, Wells, Somerset. He was married to Sarah Fry. He died in 1809 in Coxley, Wells.

I am unable to trace back further than this but the family has a crest passed down. The Coat of Arms is listed as being granted to a Kitching family of Herefordshire and depicts on a white shield a chevron between three bustards red. The Crest is a green wivern on a gold ducal coronet. However I can not trace the family to Herefordshire.

Our ancestor Theodore George Kitching (b.1862) originally settled in WA. Do either of you have links with this family?

Best wishes for the New Year.
Margaret

I am related to Elizabeth Easterbrook who married John Kitching abt 1867. Our families have been friends since the 1830s. I live in NY but go to Nassagaweya almost every year to visit family and our relatives' graves in Ebenezer United Church Cemetery in Campbellville (very close to Kitcholm Farm). I was up there last week, but the intense blizzard kept me in Guelph, so I couldn't visit the present John Kitching on the farm or go to the cemetery.

I may have a few more names of babies who died in infancy that you didn't list, but whose graves are probably in Ebenezer.

Hi again
I found Lorne Kitching but with G. as a first name (I only know the initial but I guess it was G for George (as his dad)).
Lorne (1884 - 1960) married Winnie Osborne (1888 - 1932).

Lorne's father was George Kitching (1850 Nassagaweya- 1925)who married Harriet Darby (1854 - 1891) and as far as I can tell had 3 children -
S. Ann (Sarah?) (1874- 1934) who married James Simpson, and had 7 kids... Angie,Tilly, George,Harvey, Ethel, Jack and Mary Simpson
Matilda Jane (1876 - 1960),who married Robert Wallace and had at least 1 child ... Pearl Wallace ( b 1903)
and G. Lorne.

George (1850 Nassagaweya ) was the son of John Kitching and Ann Watson as mention in my earlier email.
He had the following brothers and sisters

William Kitching (1838 - 1917)m Mary Cameron (1842-1902) and had 6 children
Ann Kitching (1841 - 1916)m Duncan Campbell(1835 - 1911) and had 8 children
John Kitching (1842 - 1904) m Elizabeth Easterbrook (1848 - 1932) and had 9 children
Elizabeth Kitching (1847 - 1882) m James Gray (1841 - 1922) and had 2 children
Emma Jane (1855 - 1911) m Robert Burns Campbell(1848 - 1936) and had 3 children.

John Kitching (George's dad) was the son of Elizabeth Kitching (1788 - 1855) and possibly a John Jackson. Elizabeth eventually married twice (William Scott and John Winter) but the 3 children she had all died young except John who emigrated as you know.

Elizabeth Kitching was the brother of my g g g grandfather Edward Kitching (b 1779 d by 1841)and I have this family history back to 1530 - Richerd Kitchinge (1530 Crosby Ravensworth - 1578)

Hope you read this and can make the link to Lorne and eventually to myself.
Adrian

Hi
A John Kitching left England in 1832 to go to Ontario ... dont know if any of this is relevant to your families...

John Kitching was born (1809) and raised in the village of Crosby Ravensworth Westmorland (now a part of Cumbria), England. Prior to emigrating to Canada in 1832, at the age of 23, he worked with his stepfather, John Winter, who was gardener/groundskeeper on the estate of the Reverend Markham, Vicar of Morland. After the Atlantic crossing (11 weeks) - he landed at Quebec City. It is reputed that he only had the clothes on his back and the equivalent of $5 in his pocket. He could not read or write. He made his way west looking for suitable Crown Land to clear from the virgin forest and develop for farming. This took him approx. 1 year. Finally, in 1833 he selected and claimed 100 acres, (Lot 21, Con. 1, Nassagaweya Township) - the current site of Kitcholm Farms.John married Ann Watson in 1837. Prior to his death he had acquired and developed adjoining land to a total of 350 acres. On these properties he built 2 substantial stone houses which are now considered the best of that era, and 3 large barns. In his spare tme, he learned to read and write and also served wiht the Canadian Militia during the Fenian raids on the Niagara Frontier.

I have a lot more detail about the family before this and following generations

Regards
Adrian (Kitchen)
Best wish

Isn't it strange that my mother was also Hilda Kitching! I knew there was another one because they both lived in Rotorua at the same time! I would love to speak with you as I have a lot of information as well - not a lot of photos though. I can tell you where they lived in Thorne - the home is still there. Would you please email me at mihinui@slingshot.co.nz and if you are willing to give me your telephone number I will ring you.

I am delighted to hear from you. Regards, Jillian

Hi Jillian
Are you a New Zealander? Your surname suggests so. John Hardy Kitching was my great grandfather. My grandfather ARthur Hardy Kitching was from Wellington and he married Hilda Mary O'Brien from Lyttelton NZ. They had 5 children including my mother Hilda Kitching..... I can tell you a lot and have some old photos too.

I would be interested in knowing of any Kitching or Fletcher descendants in Thorne as I am visiting UK soon. My grandfather and all his siblings, and most of his descendants have a very strong family likeness that I believe is from his mother's side - Hannah Fletcher. We all share some common personality traits also.

Kitching in Thorne, Yorkshire

Since my first query I have found that George KITCHING married Susanna HARDEY of Barrow-Upon-Humber, Lincolnshire. She was the daughter of John HARDEY and Susanna FAULDING, and was born in 1783. She and George married in 1815. George was living in Grove House, The Levels, Thorne. Any info appreciated.
