Help to find my mums real mum please!

Hi everyone.

I'm trying to find my mums real birth mother for her. The only information we know about her real mum is:

Name - Elizabeth Knights.
Age approx - 60 years old
Year of birth - approx 1952
She was apparently 20 when she gave birth to my mum, and my mum believes Elizabeth had 2 daughters before - one of which got adopted.
We don't know if she had any more children or even if she's still alive.

It would be very helpful if anyone has any information as she'd love to know about her siblings!

She married a Canadian soldier, had her first son James Raeburn in England and then moved to Canada. My great-grandmother Hilda (Brown?) Knight moved to Canada after john passed away. I have an original 4”x6” photograph of “James Scott Knights – Waukegan Commandery #12, K.T, Eminent Commander 1892”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Waukegan (Lake Co.) IL and he looks to be about age 60.

I found James S. Knights in the 1900 census for Waukegan (Lake Co.) IL, showing him as age 65 with birthdate Oct 1834 in MA. He was a railroad conductor and wife’s name was Bettsy. In the 1860 census for Essex Co., MA, James S. Knights was a railroad brakeman and wife’s names was Betsey.

I'm looking for information about the birth of Mary Bayles Knights.I'm not sure if Bayles is her maiden name or her mother's.She was born between 1799 7 1806 in Wilby Suffolks England.She maried my 3xgr. grand father,James Brett in Stradbroke,Suffolks,England in 1831.I could not find her birth or any marriage between A Bayles & Knights.

You are looking for information on the descendants of Julius Phineas Knights and Wealthy Hunt Avery and their son, Frederick Arnott Knights, etc. Frederick Arnott Knights was my grandfather. What would you like to know?

Also one son of Phineas Knights (denizen of Claremont, N.H.) was Arnott GILBERT Knights, my ancestor, which suggests that there is a Gilbert family in there somewhere since that is also your ancestor's middle name. And also suggests that your Knights ancestors are indeed part of the Claremont clan.

Hi Gregg,
The surname Avery caught my eye because my Simeon Williams had an Alethea Avery as a grandmother and Simeon's wife Tirzah had Knight or Knights as her surname. I can't figure out who were her parents.

Simeon and Tirzah Williams lived in Hartland, Windsor, VT in 1790 and 1800, not exactly right next door to Claremont NH but maybe there was a connection. I will let you know if I turn up anything.

George Henry Knights, b 18 August 1878, Hotel Manager, married Agnes Louisa Lessiter 1898 Hendon.
Daughter Gladys Mabel Knights born 1905 (Typist Euston Hotel, London) and was married for a very short time to John Hogg Millar (Dentist) in Edinburgh on 5th June 1926. Divorce address 1927 : 8 Riblesdale Road, Streatham London She later married Reginald Langford Turnbull in the March quarter 1932, Pancras.

I am looking for information pertaining to the children of Elvira SMITH (bp 26 May 1805, Waitsfield) and Gilbert Arnott KNIGHT(s) (or Arnot G - records have him listed both ways. According to Waitsfield church records: Arnott G Knights & wife Elvira were dismissed to Gouverneur, NY ca 4 Jan 1839. Arnot G & Alvira/Elvira L were in Lamoille, Bureau Co, IL in 1850 and 1860 censuses.
1850 Arnot G Knights, age 51, Elvira L, age 45, Julius F, 18 & Hinckley G, age 24, etc.
1860 Arnot G KNIGHT, age 60, b NH; next door was Julius P KNIGHT, age 27, b VT & wife Wealthy.

I am trying to determine Arnott's association with Hinkley Gilbert Knights mentioned above.

Here is the rest of the informaiton I have: on a hand-written note..."It seems Julius Phineas gave Hinkley Gilbert and his wife one half dozen silver spoons for a wedding gift. Hinkley Gilberts first two children were born in Ill, but none of the family now left could remember where." It goes on..."Phineas was the son and oldest child of Amasiah Knights and he had nine children (no further details). Arnott Gilbert - being the second and I guess the only one to stray away for the others are buried in this part of the country (Claremont, NH)". That's all I have, but much of it is now starting to make sense. Wish I knew more about the children of Amasiah and especially Phineas. Were Arnott and Hinkley perhaps brothers? Or maybe cousins? If you encounter any of this, I would appreciate the info. By the way, I am attaching a picture of my Great-Grandfather (Henry Gilbert Knights) as a young man. Perhaps there is a family resemblence? Like his father, he didn't stay in one place very long, moving from Iowa to West Virginia, to Massachusetts, and eventually ending up back in Claremont, NH. (Making him very hard to track.)

Hi Gregg - I have lots of Knights - mine came from MA, but my g-g-grandfather moved to Wardboro Vt. I have Amaziah Knight, son of John Knight of Woburn, MA. That one was born 1703 and I have no info as to his wife. The other Amaziah Knight in my line was the son of Ebenezer Knight - son of John - also Woburn, MA - that Amaziah was born 1720 and married Jane Smith. If any of this fits, let me know - we can investigate further.

I don't have anything definite, but some clues:
In researching my SMITH family of Waitsfield, VT, I have that Elvira SMITH (bp 26 May 1805, Waitsfield), married Gilbert Arnott KNIGHT (or Arnot G - records have him listed both ways. The Claremont connection comes from Waitsfield Land records vol 5:351: Arnot G Knights of Waitsfield mortgaged 1/2 acre to Olive Knights of Claremont, NH, 16 Jan 1836. She discharged the mortgage at Claremont 9 Mar 1838 - one of the witnesses was Esther Knights.

Because this was 2 generations from my line, I didn't research further. But other Washington Co, VT-Claremont, NH connections: John G Knights, who died in Waterbury, VT 1870, was son of "Amariah" & Lydia Knights. I think that my Catherine Knights, supposedly from Claremont, wife of Richard Kneeland of Waterbury, VT, was a daughter of Amaziah. There was an Isaac Knight married in Waterbury 1814, who might have been another son.

I don't know the children of Phineas Knight (son of Amaziah), but he was definitely old enough to be father of Arnot G. (Perhaps Olive was his daughter.)

Oh, and I checked Vital Records in Northfield, MA & Amaziah married Lydia Wright GRANDY. She was daughter of John Grandy & Esther (Wright).

Hope this gives you some clues to check.

Hinkley married Lois Elizabeth (Osmer, Osmor, Hogmen, Hogmor, exact last name is unknown) born in 1837 (also believed to be from Vermont). Their other children were: Emily (born 1856), Franklin J. (born 1858) Clara Elizabeth (born 1860) and Henry, mentioned above. Hope this helps.

I have the following notes compiled by a family member (now deceased) who had done some research...Amasiah Knights was born August 25, 1746, died January 4, 1835. He married January 29, 1767, Lydia Wight (born Nov 16, 1746, died Sept 7, 1833). Amasiah Knights was a volunteer in Capt Oliver Ashley's Company of Claremont, N.H. in the Revolutionary War and fought in the battle of Saratoga, Sept 1777. Records were taken from the history of Claremont, N.H. page 236. Children of Amasiah & Lydia (Wight) Knights
1. Phineas, (born June 20, 1769, died Oct 28, 1853) married Ester Mathews (born Apr 5, 1770, died Aug 27, 1862)
I have no other information on other children.

Note the spelling difference in these notes: Lydia's last name is in both instances spelled "Wight" not "Wright", but I am workning from a hand-copy of the original book.

Can anyone help I've just started to research my family history and need help to find Cyril Knights married Margaret Brenda Davies in 1946. His fathers name was Thomas Henry but do not have mothers name. The address in 1946 was 3 Wick Lane Christchurch England. He was a driver in the Royal Army Service Corps, serving during the 2nd World War, I think in Africa. He emigrated to Canada around 1954 and this is the last contact. I know that he had two sisters one named Joy or Joyce.

I don't have Ambrose Knights but I did find him in the 1841 and 1851 census with an abode at Carleton Forehoe and birthplace as Morley St Botolph, Nfk. He was married to Judith and had a number of children.
If you mean Ellingham, Nfk I have the following entries for KNIGHTS.
ELLINGHAM, NFK next to Geldeston, Nfk
*1765 Mar 17 Mary d/o John & Elizabeth Knights bap
*1791 Jan 1 Mary Knights mar Francis SHAWL bsotp banns
1790/4 Oct 7 Elizabeth Knights mar Henry CRICKMORE, by licence.
Could these perhaps be a relative? If you can find a location for William get back to me and I will see if I have any information about him.

I don't know if there is any connection - my gggf (ggggf?) was Ambrose Carmen K - b 1791 in Suffolk, d 1878 in Sth Australia, m to Judith Steel (b 1796, Great Ellingham, d 1887 Sth Australia). Ambrose's father was named William - nothing else known, apart from descendants. Any help appreciated, and I am happy to reciprocate.

Joseph Knights,my gggg grandfather, was baptised 1 Jan 1775 at Henstead. Son Joseph and Hannah (Smith) had 7 children and I have 3-4 generations of descendants of this couple so should be able to help you with info. I have also traced these Knights back to Joseph snr's grandparents who were Joseph and Elizabeth born c.1710. I am following up a couple of Knights connections by marriage and I have come across Joseph Knights(c 1776) who married Sarah Mills. I have not been able to find a baptism for Joseph in the parish records for Henstead or Kessingland, can you help.
I have also found some difficulty in tracking the family of Joseph and Sarah's son, Joseph Knights and his wife Hannah Smith - once again, can you help

Re your query: my ancestors left Norfolk (UK) in 1850's and went to Australia. One of them did go for a period to Canada, and then back to Australia. It is thus unlikely that there is any connection here:(

I am trying to trace a William Henry KNIGHTS, my gt grandfather.From his marriage and death cert I know he was born abt. 1875 and was he son of William Knights. At his funeral family rumour states two wives turned up both with children.
He lived around the Willesden / Harrow area of London / Middlesex.
At the moment I cant fnd any record of his birth or family. Any leads gratefully received.

I do have some information: Robina was born June 1830 in Inverness, Scotland, and married my ggf at Warrnambool in 1859. It was his second marriage (first wife died c 1856). His name was Walter Knights. They had one son, James Anderson Knights (my g/f). She died in 1860, when he was about 14 mths old. I do have some more information about direct descendants if you wish - perhaps email me on nzdanenz@hotmail.com.
My apologies for not replying sooner. Please ask any specific questions (but i can't guarantee to have the answers!) You msg was first time i knew that Robina had any siblings - perhaps you can tell me about them?

A belated reply:(
Mt g/f was James Anderson KNIGHTS, son of Robina Anderson (b21 Jun 1830 in, I think, Scotland, died 1860 Warrnambool, Vic), and Walter Knights (about whom I know almost nothing!).
James Anderson (b 12 Feb 1801, Abernathy, Scotland, d 24 May 1863, Victoria) m Isabella McPherson (b 26 Jun 1796, Inverness, d Allansford, Vic).
James Anderson was a son of John Anderson (b 1745, Scotland) and Janet LAWSON (b 1767, Scotland).
I suspect from your msg that the John A you refer to is named after his g/f, being a brother of Robina.
What I have offered may not be much - hope it helps!
If you can assist with ANYTHING related to Knights/Anderson, (esp in Australia) I would be most grateful

Yes, an "s" could be added (or subtracted) - as most of the population were not able to write/read, it was up to the writer to interpret.

Were there any children from his marriage to Ann? as if so, one of their birth certificates will hold an answer

They would sem to fit, one of the witnesses to the marriage is from Islington - which would fit.
Would it be possible for them to add the s to Knight as mine are Knights?

Re the second marriage I have no info other than what looks like 'Ann' Knights, wife as witnees to the death.
