Philp-Knill wedding 1912 in CO

Appeared in the Lafayette, Colorado newspaper Nov. 29, 1912:

"PHILP-KNILL WEDDING.
Miss Mabel Knill and Ernest Philp, residents of Lafayette, were united by the solemn bonds of matrimony on Saturday, November 23rd, in the City of Denver, before only a few of the relatives and friends.

The bride and groom remained in the Capital City until Monday morning, when they returned to their home in Lafayette, where they found the table spread with all the delicacies of the season. The house was filled with friends and neighbors to welcome the happy couple and also assist them in starting along the road that most of the visitors had trod or intend to travel. The small boys did not forget to call around and in their own small way helped to make things as lively as possible.

The neighbors kept coming in until 10 o’clock, p.m., and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. By the way some of the young ladies about the age (?) score years and ten, were (dancing?) around the room with the young men, I thought they were carried back to their younger days.

The Lafayette Quartette, composed of the prettiest young ladies in town furnished songs and music for the happy throng. But in conclusion I will state that we all had a good time and the best wishes we can give them is that they may live the allotted time that is given to man without a wave of trouble in the sea of life in which they have just embarked.”

Note: Submitter not related.
Knill Family

To all the Knills out there you are my last hope. I have one photograph of my great grand father Patrick Cummings of the docks, Cardiff. He was adopted by Ellen Cummings and Patrick Cummings of Cardiff. On the back of the photograph is the name of his father G Knill of 17 Brean down avenue Bristol. And Wilfred Withers Pilning, Bristol. I know members of my family who have passed on, had traced my Knill family to a shop in Somerset, and this is all the information i have. I have no idea who his mother was or what his real name was. Patrick was born on the 9th January 1900, and is not on the 1901 census with his adopted parents, if any one has the smallest piece of information, the help would go along way. With thanks and much hope, Heidi.

Unfortunately Paula has never replied and I am very vague on my grandfather's roots. My mother has Altzheimers and is unable to answer any real questions about my grandfather. All I know is that he was born in 1882 in Herefordshire and lived on a farm with orchards, he had a brother William who I believe is Paula's grandfather. My grandmother's name was Barbara Hunt nee Wilcox and her sister was Jenny Wilcox. According to my mother my grandfather's parents disowned my grandfather because he married a widow with 5 children of which they disapproved. The only other information I have is that apparently the family were cheated out of any money which should have come out of the farm.

My grandfather was Charles Knill who I believe was your great-grandfathers brother. His wife was also my grandmothers sister. Two brothers married two sisters. They lived on a farm in Hereford before coming to Maerdy in the Rhonnda to work in the local pit. They lodged with Jenny who your great-grandfather later married. My grand-father then married my grandmother who was a widow with 5 children. They had a further 6 children. My mother is the youngest at 78 there is one other sister still alive living in London. I'm very excited finding your message as I have just started to research family. Can provide some information. Unfortunately my mother is suffering with Altzheimers which is why I started to try and refresh her memory.

Knills of Ilfracombe

My Great-grandfather was Isaac Knill, born 1849, in Ilfracombe, and died 07 April 1885. I know there were 10 children: Annie, born 1872, William H Knill, born 1874, Louis Brimley, born 1875, died Nov 1937, Lucy, born 1877, Joshua, born 1878, Isaac, born 1879, died 24 Jun 1917, John, born 1880, Charles born 1882, died 15 Aug 1885, George, born 1883 and Philip, born 1886. Acccording to the 1881 Census, the children were all born in Ilfracombe, Devon and living at 12 Horne Lane, Ilfracombe. My Grandfather, Louis Brimley Knill, married Sarah Jane Dyer, born about 1873, died aged 71, in Ilfracombe.
The furthest back I've got so far is George Knill, my Great, Great, Great, Grandfather, born about 1773, died 24 Jun 1858, married Mary, born about 1781, died 09 May 1866. They had at least two children, John Knill, born 1807, died 27 Apr 1885, and Elizabeth Knill, died 11 Feb 1813, aged 15 days. This information is from their family headstone in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Ilfracombe. I have found a Thomas Knill and Thomasin Allen married in Braunton in 1595, and are wondering where they fit in.
I was born and still live in Ilfracombe, if there is any more information I can help with.
Regards Kenneth.
kcknill@tesco.net

Hello Jim
My Great-grandfather was also Isaac Knill, born 1849, in Ilfracombe, and died 07 April 1885. We know there were 10 children: Annie, born 1872, William H Knill, born 1874, Louis Brimley, born 1875, died Nov 1937, Lucy, born 1877, Joshua, born 1878, Isaac, born 1879, died 24 Jun 1917, John, born 1880, Charles born 1882, died 15 Aug 1885, George, born 1883 and Philip, born 1886.
We have read Peter Newcombe's message on the Knill Genealogy Forum, which goes as far back as Thomas Knill, about 1441. Does your research concur with Peter's that Thomas Knill is our line? For instance, we have found a Thomas Knill and Thomasin Allen married in Braunton in 1595, and are wondering where they fit in. We tried to contact you via the email address you used on the Forum, but all our emails were returned to us undelivered.
I was born and still live in Ilfracombe,if there is any more information I can help with.
Regards your cousin, Kenneth.
kcknill@tesco.net

Just read through the messages and would appreciate any assistance. My grandmother was Alice Maud Knill. I believe her family were from Barnstable in N. Devon where they kept a public house. She moved to Neath in South Wales where for a time she was a barmaid in the Butchers Arms. She married my grandfather Thomas Pugsley and moved to Briton Ferry. I have been unable to dig up any other information but have recollection of my father saying that he had cousins in the Carmarthen area. Nothing from the Rhondda from this line.

Hi Paula,
Thanks for the offer but I fear your info won't go back quite far enough for my line. I am sure that there are many Hereford Knills who would love to contact you though.
Thanks - Jim

My 83 yr old grandfather is William Thomas Knill is from Hereford and the Rhondda, as was his parents and his great grandparents. He is still alive living in Yorkshire with a very good memory of his early childhood and may be able to help you in some of your research. My mother has done a little bit on the knills in herefordshire, but not got too far back on it

If you are interested let me know

regards

paula Evans

I am researching Knills in North Devon. I believe that the North Devon Knills came out of the de Braose/ Herefordshire Knills but cannot find a link. I have research back to about 1441 in North Devon. I believe that one branch of the Hereford Knill family probably inherited lands in North Devon and moved there. All speculation of course, but it looks very logical. Does anyone have any early information connecting the Hereford Knills to North Devon?

My great grandfather and great-great grandmother both had Knill as a middle name. We think it is a family name but have not made the connection.
My great grandfathr was John Knill Hugo born in New Harmony, IN and my g-g grandmother was Jane Knill Craddock. Since you
are the only Knill I have every seen on a message board, I thought I would post a reply. I don't have any connection to New
Zealand however. I guess the Knills probably came from England originally.
