Is it possible you replied to me some years ago on a Banat
website? My great aunt (grandmother's sister) Rosa did come
over after her husband, who had arrived the year before. Just recently I was in touch with someone who provided me with the Hungarian Church records from the 1600s to late
1800s. I found the names of my grandmother's brothers and
sisters, including a number of them I wasn't aware of. My
mother, who is 94, only talked about Rosa and Matthias.
I will compile that list for you and send it along. To my
knowledge the names Pichler and Horvath were never a part of the oral history of my family. My grandfather, Franz Xavier Stemmer has some questions yet to be answered in his family history as well.
Your grandmother and mine were probably cousins. I would be
interested in information you can provide.
Was very glad to see your posting after all this time. Will get back to you soon.

I believe my grandmother traveled to the US with your grandmother's sister Rosa. My grandmother was Terez Pichler and I believe they were cousins from Vajska. Do you know anymore about her family? Are there any Pichlers or Horvaths in your family tree?

Knorr family Philadelphia and Pennsylvania

My mom had a letter by a relative or friend who had done some research. I will try to put it all below. I hope it helps someone in their research.

Her note says, "Dear Barbara, here is a copy of a printout I received from a Knorr in New York who has done extensive work on tracing Knorr genealogy. I think I have gotten back to a Matthias Knorr whose ancestor was John George Knorr - the 1st Knorr coming to the Philadephia area in 1725.
You may or may not be interested but if you will be good enough to fill in the missing information it might help some future inquisitive Knorr - although it appears that your line has about died out. I do not appear because I am not a Knorr - I put you in and also your cousin Marion but I did not have a birthdate (for Marion I assume). There are so many gaps especially as you go back in time and generation."

Attached to her letter is a brief timeline (more detailed info on early Knorrs is listed at the end of this post).

John J Knorr, b 1838 d. 1902, married to Matilda b 1840, d. 1907

Phillip Knorr Jr. b 1861 d 1937 married to Sarah Toner, b 1865, d. 1920

John Knorr, b 1870 d 1899

William Knorr b 1862

Morris Knorr b 1872 d 1960

Edward M Knorr b 1877 d 1948

Matilda Knorr (no info given)

Margaret Knorr (no info given)

Edward Knorr b 1882

Morris Knorr b 1894

Raymond A Knorr, b. 1896, d. 1978 married to Mary (May) Gelchion (my grandparents - have photos)
b 1896, d. 1986

Leo c. Knorr,handwritten note says Sept 25, 1929

Barbara Knorr, child to Raymond and Mary Knorr, b. 1932, d. 1997

Detailed information:

Seven Stars Hotel: located at a point where Oxford Road begins, i.e. Frankford Avenue...."a visitor would have to wait there for the stage coach to take them a little over two miles north of Frankford to the Knorr farm on Oxford Road. "They would also have to wait there to go another Knorr farm on Cottman Street & Castor Road to go to Abe Knorr's farm."

John George Knorr & Hannah his wife
Listed in 1734 as a landowner of 50 acres in Germantown. (from records of Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania publication of January 1895, Dec. 1895)

Matthias Knorr: b. 4/7/1737, d. 6/13/1825
youngest son of John Geo. Knorr
Issue:
Polly b 3/13/1766
Jacob b. 1/8/1768-74
Lydia b 9/27/1770
Hannah b. 2/7/1773-74
Abraham b. 5/3/1775-79
Matthias b. 10/2/1777
John b. 4/8/1780
Susannah b. 2/16/1783

John Knorr came from Germany.

Heinrich Jacob Knorr emigrated from Germany in 1762. His son Christian served in the Revolutionary War and is buried at Hains Reformed Church in Warnersville, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

*Heinrich Jacob Knorr must have anglosized (sic) his name to Henry after living here.
He is on record as a member of the Murual Assurance Company in 1784 (which would be 20 years after arriving from Germany). The Assurance Company of 240 S. 4th Street. These assurance companies, I belive, were the early "fire companies" formed by volunteers. If a fire occured and their particular emblem was not display on the property on fire they would no extinguish the fire. Hence, there were several fire companies rushing to one fire to see whose responsiility the fire became (from the Schuykill Fishing Cimpany formed in 1729.)> this was one of the earliest clubs formed in the Philadelphia area and later became a status symbo).

check: Mary A Toner, b. 1862, d. 4/1/1911 interred St. Joachim's Cem.

Jasper Knorr Sayer or Sawyer: served under Cept. Joe Hubbley in the Revolutionary War. Information traken from a payroll record of Sept. 1 1776 on a list dated 2/24/1781.

Gen. George Knorr died 8/24/1854 - from Phila. ledger b 12/11/1761. Married Elizabeth Sheet or Sheets or Sheetz on 12/23/1784.

33 Knorrs served from Pennsylvania in the Civil War despite the fact that the German population looked on the Civil War as wrong because it was a war between "blood brothers". They were agains slavery but also against civil war.

Abraham Knorr: owned a farm in Frankford on Cottman Street and Castor Road. Married Jerry Lynn's daughter.

Barnard Knorr
Michael Knorr
Jacob Shinnick Knorr
Frank Knorr
Elizabeth and Florence E. Knorr of 6412 Oxford Ave. Philadelphia, 11, Pa.
(they are the 5th generation to live on same property built by the Knorrs in 1812).

Michael Knorr was a Captain and later a Major in the War of 1812. His original commission was signed by the Governor of Pennsylvania and is in the possession of their cousin, Frank Knorr.

Michael Knorr operated and owned an inn on Oxford "plank" road - two miles above Frankford (Could this be the Seven Stars Hotel site?) Michael Knorr called his inn the "Volunteer". License was issued 31st dat of December 1813 in conformity with an Act of Congress of the U.S. passed on teh 2nd of August 1813 signed by S.M. Smith, Commissioner of the Revenue. The Volunteer was located in Oxford Township. From photostat copy 492 of a license to sell by retail spirits to Michael Knorr at the sign of The Volunteer.

Michael Knorr is the great grandfather of Elizabeth and Florence.

Jessie Eleanor Knorr Robertson
245 N. Christian Snyder and under Capt. Jacob Hull.

This side of the Knorrs goes back to a Johannes Knorr born in 1570 - See Pennsylvania Archives, 6th series, Vol. I, P. 929-937.

Susannah Rittenhouse Knorr, daughter of Joseph and Mary rittenhouse married which Knorr?? B. 1/28/1794, d. 7/23/1829.

Jacob Shinnick Knorr: attended private school in Hartsville, Pa., and, as was required in those days, learned a trade. He chose horse shoeing and wheelwright. Rumor is that he made the wheels for the Conestoga wagons.
Check "Notes on the Knorr Family" in the American Genealogist, Vol. i, p. 1740180.

Check Knorr Street in Fox Chase, Phila., Pa. - named for a Jacob Knorr, who owned a large plant nursery through which the street was cut. Being a tough old German, he insisted the street carry the family name before he would sell them the ground. (source) Robt.
Lajos,
This is a very late reply to your posting in 2005. My grandmother Barbara Knorr Stemmer had a sister named Rosa, who emigrated to the U.S. after her husband came over in 1912. Her husband's name was Nicholas Pelzer. They had a son Frank. She died in the 1918 influenza epidemic. It sounds as though there was a lot of repetition of names. Coincidentally, my grandfather, Franz X. Stemmer's half sister, Magdalena Stemmer married a Grubitsh. She signed her letters to him Leni Grubitsh.

Barbara Lewis
Kensington, CT USA

Hi Lois,
It's been quite a while since you posted this. Hopefully, you're still a member here. Joseph's parents are George T. b.1818 in Pa. and Jeanette b.1821.
There are two more brothers Ulysses b.1863 and Newton b.1861 in Maryland. Newton married Annie J. Hunter b.1864 in Philadelphia. She is the sister of my great-grandfather, William Clarke Hunter. Newton and Annie's children are Edna b.1886, Marion b.1888, Vinton1891 b.,Harrold b.1894, Katherine b.1898, Charlotte b.1902 and Albert b.1905, all in Philadelphia. At one point, they resided at 1617 Wharton Street, along with my great-great-grandmother, Charlotte Hunter and Annie's brother, David Hunter.
I found most of this from census records. It's all posted on my family tree (Hunter Family Tree) on Ancestry. It's a public tree, so you can take a look at it if you want.

Vicki Hunter

Louis is my husbands grandfather and Walter is his great uncle.

This is a recollection from his sister Katherine:
"He was also described by Aunt Katherine as "fun loving" and had no children.
KNORR/SAUERWEIN/ZEPP/ZIMMERMAN St Louis

I am looking for some informaiton on these St Louis families. The
KNORRS came to St Louis from Bellville, St. Clair County, Illnois just
before the 1880 census. It is thought that all these families came to
the area from Germany by way of New Orleans. I am not sure if the
other three families came directly to St Louis, stayed in New Orleans
for a while, or started in St Clair County Illinois the way the KNORRS
did. I would love to know.

Here is my situation: Caroline SAUERWEIN (1874-1950) married Louis
KNORR (1872-1952) abt 1892 or 93. Louis Knorr's mother was a ZIMMERMAN
from Belleville or Mascoutah, Illionois. Caroline SAUERWEIN's death
record lists her mother as Anna FUCHS and her father as Carl (Charles)
SAUERWEIN. The records of her siblings-older and younger- list
Catharina Elisabeth ZEPP as the mother and Carl (Charles) ZEPP as the
father. The census records consistently list Catharina ZEPP as the
mother. There's even a marriage record for Carl and Catharina. .

Here's the problem: The family oral history is not sure if she was
FUCHS or ZEPP, the transcription refers to her as grandma, and her
husband is called Phillip by the great aunt that was interviewed. I
have researched this as much as and I can find no connections with
any Phillip or FUCHS. Although there is a Phillip SAUERWEIN in this
time and place he does not seem to be from the same SAUERWEIN family.
Maybe an uncle or cousin-but I have not been able to verify that
either. Anyone have any ideas of who Anna FUCHS may be? I would
really love to be able to solve this mystery, and also to share what I
have with anyone interested in these families.
Thanks so much,

I know it's been a couple years since this was posted, but I do have some of the information you are asking for from a couple of sources.
I have just recently located and have been conversing by email with Morris Knorr, the author of "German/Catholic Courage. From the steppes to the Prairies, The Life and Times of Adam Knorr 1870-1952".
He also has another book available. To quote a recent email "Last summer my wife and I travelled with 2 Scheck's back to Grosswerder Ukraine where our family came from. I've written a history of Grosswerder with many pics. etc."

I don't have the books yet, but I have arranged to have the first one reprinted and to purchase a copy of the second one.

As for Eva's siblings, I have that and quite a bit more of the family tree from a different source, whom I'm also hoping to get in touch with soon. Looks like they had a very large family!

Anna b: October 15, 1905
Adam b: Sept 05, 1906
Elizabeth b: Sept 08, 1908
Eva b: Sept 22, 1910 d Mar 23 1989 (married Dillon Herron)
John b: April 05, 1914
Anna b: June 27, 1914 (married Walter Wondga)
Matthew b: Feb 27, 1916
Justina b: Sept 25, 1919 (married Oscar Lunddquest)
Frances b: Oct 26, 1921
Peter b: Aug 09, 192 (married Evelyn Schafer)
George b: Jan 04, 1925
Valentine b: Feb 11, 1928 (married Winona Hollingshead)
Raphel b: Sept 22, 1930 (married Phyliss Lindquist)
Theodore b: Nov 09, 1932
She was a sister to my grand-mother. Nicholas and Sarah Jane "Jennie" Rector Knorr are buried in the Greendale cemetery at Lawrenceburg, Dearborn Co., IN. next to her parents. I would love to make contact with Carol Knorr, she didn't answer my post and she would be related to Nicholas and Jennie also.
Jean

His two children are Gary and Linda, and I believe he was an only child. Linda has no children and Gary's daughters are myself, and Kari Knorr (Lane). Good luck in your search.

Looking for information about the family of Charles E. and Florence B. (Hushman) Knorr. The last point on the timeline I have for them is the 1930 Census. They are living at 5617 Michigan Ave. in St. Louis with seven children: Bessie, Sherman, Harry, Marie, Virginia, Ruth and Jean. I've hit a brick wall on these folks. With all of these children, there must be some descendants out there! :) Thanks for your interest.
