The Toy that everyone is calling was known to me as Judge Ellis Knotts. He was my grandfather. He and Celia had two daughters, one died at age six months the other I knew as Nora Hydrick. She was born in 1922 and died 4/20/1987 in Lexington County hospital. She lived in Wagener, SC. She had one son and three daughters. Closest thing I have found on Helen Saphrania or Saphronia Knotts is she had one brother and three sisters. She had three sons Nathaniel, Bogan, and Judge Ellis. No father is known for any of them.
I was told her name was Frannie.

I just learned that some of my Knotts ancestors were sold as slaves from Louisiana into Texas. Last name being Knotts. I have also been told that the Slave owner was my great great grandfathers father. My gg grandfathers name was Ben Knotts married to a Mary Ella Benford Knotts. His son was also named Ben Knotts (or Benjamin) I was told he was white but he could have been a "passer" Do you still have access to these slave documents?

They both went to Madison County Iowa and there is a copy of a land transfer between them. I don't have a picture of Isaac and I don't know the date of his death or where he died.
Who's Your Daddy II? Children of Mary Ann Knotts

I believe there is an error in a lot of Knotts trees that seems to be multiplying. The children of a Charles Hayden and Mary Knotts are listed incorrectly and actually are the descendants of my Charles Hayden.

My ancestor's were Charles E. Hayden 1820-1880, married to Mary Rebecca Bossee b. 1824-1895. Their children: John Wesley 1845-1912, Julia Ann 1846-1919, Peter 1849-1895, Joseph, Charles, Emma, Mary, Margaret.

I believe the error originates from the Maryland marriage records as there was another Charles Hayden that married Mary Ann Knotts during the same time period.

I'm a descendant through Julia (my g-grandmother). Julia Ann Moffett-Mary Rebecca Bossee, Julia Ann Hayden - Mary Rebecca Fuhr. Charles' civil war records clearly indicate that Mary R. is his wife as does his pension file.

I thought I'd pass this info along in order to clear up some of the confusion.

John K Knotts

In the 1850 US census, John K Knotts is listed with Elizabeth Knotts Burns (after her husband James Burns died in 1850). There is no listing of their relationship.

Elizabeth's mother Rebecca Fling Knotts could have had John late in life (upper 40's) and John could be Elisabeth's brother.

Elisabeth could have also had John out of wedlock at the age of 21.

There is a death record for John K Knotts on 20 May 1879 through WV Vital Research Records. You can see Elizabeth as his mother, but the father's name didn't get copied.

Also Elisabeth and her husband James didn't get married until 1826, 8 years after John's birth.

If you have ANY info on John K Knotts and his family, please respond.

Wow, thanks for all the info. Benjamin was born in SC I believe and Absolom in Virginia, I think. They could've been brothers, however at this time, I am looking for Benjamin's father and Absolom is not his father. I'm sure I'll find him, I was looking for some search tips as I am fairly new to geneology and want to do it correctly. I did know that the early census' did not list anything beyond head of household, hence my trouble finding earlier ancestors. Thanks again!

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1930 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.
NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces +++

You have not stated WHERE Benjamin or Absolom Knotts was born.

Have you considered that they may be BROTHERS or cousins??

Sorry! Benjamin Knotts b:1744 in S.C., d:1812 in S.C. Absolom Knotts b:1745 Delaware, d:1835 . I can't figure out where the error is. Benjamin has a son, also named Benjamin but Absolom is listed as being Ben Sr.'s father. I will say that it is other family trees that have given me that info, at least 10 of them. All of the census' from 1800, 1810 only list how many people live in the household, no names except head so I don't know where to look next but I really want to figure this out! Thank you so much for replying.....

All info I've found on one of my ancestors lists the same man as his father. I cannot find any document to dispute it, the problem is that their birthdates, father and son, are about a year apart so either the dates are incorrect or the last four generations of my tree are off. All of the early census records on list the number of people in the household so I can't even verify his children's names that way. Help! How can I figure this out????? Son's name: Benjamin Knotts, Father's name (maybe): Absolom Knotts.

I am working on this line also. I think Isaac married Susannah Rawson and lived in Massac County Illinois for awhile. My grandmother line, I believe is one of their daughters, Sarah. There was a Sarah, Charity and Samuel on the census with a Rawson family. I believe their mom and Dad died therefore the Rawsons (wife's family) took them in.
My grandmother (my dads mother) had a grandfather (her moms father) named John Knotts. They were from the Johnstown/Coalport area of PA. Not sure if this connected to you in any way, but while searching I came across your tree and name.

As for the Knotts/Snotts name it sounds to me that the census workers simply misheard the name. If I were to ask you what your last name is and you say "it's Knotts" it sounds like you're saying it's Snotts. Unless you have documented proof that the name was actually changed that would be my guess. Maybe not?

I have been trying to find out any information about my Knotts family roots. The story has a lot of gaps in it but here is what I know or have been told:
1) My dad was born in Bienville parish in the early 30s. Dad went by the name of Quinton Carson Knotts.
2) His mother was Lois Warren from the same area.
3) We were always told that his father's name was Carson Knotts but there was never any talk of there being an actual marriage between Lois and Carson.
4) There were three children born (Dad, Ivy Gene and another that died at or near birth - Jerry LeWayne)

Not a lot to go on but any help woudl be appreciated. We have lots of information on my Mom's side but anything beyond my dad has been a deadend. He would never talk about specifics when he was alive.

Thanks!

Kurt
