Mr. Knowles,

I have 1000s of men named Charles Knowles or Noles in my database. Can you be more specific?

One possibility from my files is Charles Brown Knowles (1842-1895), a C.S.A. vet married to an Elizabeth Baxter. This Charles Knowles being the son of Henry Walton Knowles, a third great grandson of one of the many Knowles progenitor; i,e., Edmund "Old Silverhead" Knowles (1685-1762). This Knowles line often used the Noles and Knoles spellings for the surname.

By the way, to prove your Knowles ancestry, you could obtain a Y-DNA test.
Where is this Knowles Reunion held?

Who did Lena Knowles marry?

We still need a living male Knowles for this line to be tested to confirm that this Knowles line is or isn't from "Old Silverhead" Knowles. I'm inclined to believe this line is NOT an "OSH" line, but a Y-DNA test could establish which ancient Knowles line is the right one. The Y-DNA profile for about 40 Knowles (and Knoles & Noles) lines has been established, out of the several 100 lines known to exist.

Thanks,

Rob Noles
rbnoles@bellsouth.net

Hello, I am the great-grandson of Lena (Helen) Knowles, daughter of James Wiley Knowles, son of Robert Knowles, son of James Knowles, so I'm curious about the thirst for genealogy in our blood, which has clearly been found in me as well. I have read some of the text at kkfna.org, but it's a bit overwhelming at present, especially considering how many familial lines I am tracing. My first thought was that it has something to do with trying to distinguish between unrelated (or to put it another way, more distantly related) Knowles families, owing to their name becoming the same from different starting points. I have heard stories that people on that side of the family often had reunions, something that my other lines are often quite reticent about (as far as I know), and since I am telling you that I have heard stories, I obviously haven't attended one nor have ever known where one was.

May you find what you are looking for.
-Eric

Yes, I have her siblings. Texana was born in September 1863. She was the daughter of William Swaim Teague (1834-1922) and Amanda Melvina Mitchell. Her siblings were:

*Isaac Jackson Teague, 19 Oct. 1865 - 20 March 1947 (married Mariel Abbott)

*Lula Elizabeth, 7 Aug 1868 - 10 March 1945 (married James Polk Loving)

*Mary Frances Teague, 1870-1878 (no proof on this child yet)

*Nancy Emma, 1872 - (still searching for further information)

*Eugene Delose, December 1873 - ? (married Frances Mae "Fannie" Thomas) have not yet located his DC

*Larceny, 1876 - (still gathering information)

*Laura Maud, 28 March 1876 - 19 June 1939 (married a Mr. Collier)

*Chapman Loving, 1878-1 March 1884 (buried in Old Perry Cemetery, Moody, TX - his headstone reads Chad L. TIGUE)

*Claude Duevoy, 8 Dec 1880 - 25 Dec 1968 (spelling of name is from granddaughter - he married Virginia Melton)

*RUCIOUS Bly, 6 May 1884 - 19 June 1966 (married Bertha Taft Anderson. Most trees and people say his name was Rufus. However, in his own handwriting, he wrote RUCIOUS. He used only the first name of Bly, and on his DC, it shows Bly with a blank for middle initial Teague.)

I currently don't know of any Knowles descendants? But there is a small group of us Teague researchers who are constantly on the lookout for ANY living descendants of William Swaim Teague, Isaac H. Teague, and/or Nancy Bray Teague. You can email me at patty719@msn.com

I will definitely keep an eye out for anyone who might surface on us! Patty

Did you chech Ancestry.com or other sites with old newspapers on-line?

I do have the wife of Henry Clay Knowles listed as Texana C. Teague, the daughter of William S.
I am trying to find a possible newspaper article that would have been dated either on or directly after July 29, 1911.

The news article would be concerning the death of Henry Clay Knowles, who was apparently hit by a train in Hamilton County, Texas.

Henry Clay Knowles was married to my 2nd great aunt Texana Teague.

Thank you for any information or links I could check out.

Patricia Quinn Meigs

Do you happen to have any record of this family? We're trying to identify Ann MURRAY. She was b. 4 Aug. 1811, Lancaster, dau/o Mat. & Marg., & was mother of the Thomas KNOWLES, b. Dec. 1850, Lancashire, who m1. 29 Feb. 1876, Bristol Co., MA, Elizabeth MacCAULEY & m2. 1895, MA, Ellen [BUTLER] LORD, dau/o Michael BUTLER.

Grace KNOWLES was baptized 1837, St. Peter's Catholic Ch., Lancaster, Lancashire, England, dau/o Thomas & Ann.

We've found censuses of 1841, '51, '61.
Lancaster, Lancaster, Lancashire, 1841, all born in the county, KNOWLES
Thomas, 30 or 31? spinner; Ann, 28; John, 10; Hugh, 8; Margaret, 5; Grace, 3; Hannah, 10 months.

Blackburn (parish & borough), 1851, KNOWLES
Ann, head, married, 39, b. Informant was daughter Grace DUNN, so that's the right Ann even though the age isn't clear.

Fall River, MA, USA, census, 1880, Thomas KNOWLES, 30, b. England, had bro. Hugh, 48, b. England.

Ancestry: Priscilla KNOWLES (b. ca. 1845, Lancaster, Lancashire, dau/o Thomas KNOWLES, b. 1810, & Ann, b. 1811) m.
My great grandfather was George Anson Knowles. I have traced back to John Knowles 1625-1705 and wife Jemima Austen a bit further. G.A. Knowles mother was an Avery and the family history is easily followed for that link. Another passed down name in the family is Carroll, but I have not yet made the positive connection. Anyone have more info?
Nancy,

After all these years, we haven't found the documents necessary to connect your Benjamin G. Knowles to one of the many Knowles families from before the Revolutionary War.

Perhaps I suggested this to you before: The connection may only be possible if you can find a living male Knowles descendant of Benjamin to be tested. Do you know of any; if not, have you advertised for one?

Rob Noles
rbnoles@bellsouth.net
Director, Knowles/Knoles/Noles Family Association

Thanks for the reply. There are descendants of this line from Virginia to California, and they've found a cousin in England who discovered this:

When Thomas KNOWLES married in Fall River, MA, 1895, either he gave the incorrect maiden name of MORRIS for his mother Ann or the clerk recorded it incorrectly. There was an Ann MURRAY who was baptized at St. Peter Catholic Church, Lancaster, Lancashire, daughter of Mathew and Margaret. Then Ann MURRAY married at St. Peter, Lancaster, 15 May 1830, Thomas KNOWLES. Additional information is that Thomas KNOWLES & Ann named their son John Robert Murray KNOWLES, and there was a Margaret baptized at St. Mary of Furness Catholic Church, Ulverston, Lancashire. This is all we have at the moment, but we're hoping to get more details.

Do you have any information on the above Thomas KNOWLES, b. ca. 1810, who m. 1830, Ann MURRAY?

Speaking as the Administrator for this message Board (Knowles, technically this inquiry should have been a new inquiry and not a reply to the William Knowles inquiry.

Anyway, I am not aware of any documentation available for the parents of said Thomas Knowles and / or his wife, Ann Morris. Some of their children and their families are listed in the Bristil Co., Massachusetts Censuses.

Is Thomas Knowles, Jr. your Knowles line?

Thomas, Jr. had at least three sons, so there is a good chance that this Knowles family has a living direct male descendant who could be tested to establish the Y-chromosome profile for this Knowles line.

The Thomas Knowles Y-DNA profile when compared to the profiles for 100s of other Knowles men, might identify the Knowles ancestors for this Thomas Knowles.

Rob Noles
rbnoles@bellsouth.net
Director, Knowles/Knoles/Noles Family Association
www.KKNFA.org
Project Administrator, Knowles Surname DNA Project with FTDNA

OK, now we know that Willis KNOWLES is son of Jabez KNOWLES and Elisha/Alicia ALLEN Knowles, b. Glenelg (Tarpum Bay) Eleuthera, Bahamas in 1891. He emigrated to Key West, Florida in 1909, living with an aunt, Hanna NOTTAGE in 1910.

Jabez KNOWLES had 12 living children with Elisha. She died in Oct. 1892, 6 days after giving birth to their 13th child who was stillborn.

Jabez then married Louisa Mary MORRIS and they had at least 8 children together.

From these 20 children, there must be many descendants of Jabez KNOWLES. Let's connect!

Susan Mocsny Thomas

Rob,

Thanks for the reply. I thought just as you say, that any Native American would be along some maternal line, though I have not seen any that looked Native. I guess I'll try to contact the later book's author to ask if he has any further information on the statement about Joe Greenleaf.

Dick

Dick,

I am familiar with the genealogy of Joseph Edward Knowles (b. 1867) from Wilton, Maine from the research by Virginia Hufbauer. Joe's Knowles line is English, with a deep ancestry confirmed by DNA testing to be Western European (R1b1a2). Any Native American ancestry would have to be from a maternal line of one of his grandmothers. But, I don't think any of them were Native American.

Rob Noles
rbnoles@bellsouth.net
Director, Knowles, Knoles, Noles Family Association
www.kknfa.org

Joe Knowles (of "Alone In The Wilderness")

I'm reading about Joseph Edward Knowles (1867-1942, b. Wilton, Maine; lived Maine, Mass., Washington) who published "Alone In The Wilderness" after spending 2 months in the Maine woods in 1913. Joe is my 1st cousin 3x removed (this from Virginia Knowles Hufbauer's book). I'm presently reading "Naked In The Woods: Joseph Knowles and the Legacy of Frontier Fakery", by Joe Motavalli, 2007. On page 28 Motavalli writes

"Knowles's father, Joseph Greenleaf Knowles, was a Civil War veteran ... of English and Native American heritage ..."

So my questions- Does anyone know of this Native American heritage in this line? And does anyone know where the "Greenleaf" name comes from?

The Knowles line, from Hufbauer and other sources is
John Knowles-> John -> Ezekiel -> Amos -> Ezekiel -> Levi -> Ezekiel -> Joseph Greenleaf. My GGGrandfather is Joseph Greenleaf's brother Warren Kimball.

Thanks for any help on this!

Dick K.

Trying to find info about a John Nowels or Knowles who had a son named Hezekiah born May 13, 1846. In the census of Holmes county, Ohio, dated August 30, 1850, it shows his mother Proviana Nowles age 23 with Hezekiah age 3 living with John Swigert and his wife Catherine and Catherine Nowels age 14. Catherine was either a sister or daughter of John. John supposedly died of Typhoid or sawmill accident in late 1849 in 1850. Hezekiah changed his name to William H Knowles when serving in the Civil war. His mother Proviann was supposedly the daughter of John Sawyer who died and buried Elkhart, Indiana.

Deanna or Dianna Knowles

I'm looking for any information about my grandmother's birth mother. I have very little information & what I do have may be inaccurate. My grandmother, Ellen Larena Close was born Louise Elaine Knowles on Jun 18 1943 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, her birth mother apparently a woman by the name of Deanna Knowles was born about 1925. My grandmother was put up for adoption & was adopted by Victor John Close & Eva Larena Enright. I have no information about her birth father other than he was blond & fair complextion & came once with Deanna to briefly visit when my grandmother was still very young. Deanna apparently tried to make contact with my grandmother later in life at the funeral of my grandmother's adopted mother Eva. She was accompanied with another daughter, Christine, half sister to my grandmother. My grandmother refused to have anything to do with either her mother or sister because she had a bad childhood & blamed her mother for giving her up. If anyone has any info that could be of use to me please feel free to reply.

There are also 2 uncles, 4 male cousins, my 2 sons and my nephew. Not sure what is required for the DNA test, but I will try to look into it.

Your Knowles line is one of the North Carolina Knowles lines originally from Duplin County in the 18th century.

We still need Knowles men for this line to be Y-DNA tested (tests currently on-sale)to establish the DNA profile to determine which of the ancient Knowles lines is the right one for this line.

Robert B.
Mable and James Kirk were my great grandparents. Their only son, George David, was my grandfather. He passed away in 1999. He had six children (3 daughters and 3 sons). They are all still living in Putnam County, Florida. Please contact me with additional information and I will see if any of them are interested in assisting with your research.

We are trying to find out more information about our Knowles line and would love any assistance you can provide.
