Hi, It's about tweleve years later and I hope you're still checking your post. Granville Henry Knox was my great, great grandfater. His mother, Mary Mina was the heiress of Netley Park having outlived her brothers. Granville Henry was not her heir but became her heir when he outlived his brother James Fitzroy Knox. I'm not sure he was in possession of Netley Park when he immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1883, but he may have been. In which case, I'm sure it was sold at that time.

Granville Henry Knox, was a great grandson of Francis Knox of Rappa Castle. The family seat in County Mayo, Ireland. His father James Annesley Knox and his mother Mary Mina Knox were cousins. Granville Henry by his marriage to the heiress Ellen Farrer, was able to purchase Errew in the parish of Crossmolina, barony of Tirawley, Co Mayo, from Charles O'Donnell. In 1876 he owned 1182 acres in Co Mayo and 1128 acres in Co Sligo. He overextended his resources by building a large house at Errew, which became known as 'Knox's Folly'. It is a large plan Victorian Gothic house built on a peninsula jutting out into Lock Conn. It was probably designed by James Franklin Fuller and built in the 1870’s. Following his bankruptcy he immigrated to Nova Scotia.

Granville Henry, his wife, Ellen and all his family arrived in Nova Scotia in 1883. Granville Henry passed away in 1894 in Bakers Settlement and Ellen in 1934. They had 14 children, the 3 youngest were born in Bridgewater (Bakers Settlement), Lunenburg County, Canada.

I know more family history if you're interested. Hope you find the post after over a decade.

Karen

Have you been told about the Knox DNA project? It is at knoxsociety.com for further information. Hopefully you have a living male Knox descendant that could participate. Perhaps more clues would come from DNA. We all end up sooner or later in Ireland and then back to Scotland if we get back that far and some seem to have done just that. How did your family get to Australia? John Knox, the reformer, had no sons but he did have brothers. There is history at knoxsociety.com

Best of luck in your research.

I am a descendant of a KNOX in Australia

Hi,

I am a descendant of a KNOX in Australia. Actually I am a 5th Generation in Australia. My KNOX FAMILY that are researched are traced back to Ballynahatten, County Down, Ireland. He was George Knox born circa 1779 lived Cranfieldtown, Kilkeel, County Down, Ireland. Married Margaret Marsden McKee.Had 3 children. Immigrated to Nova Scotia. I am told then moved on to the shipbuilding yards of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He was a ship's carpentar.I believe he had brothers James and John who lived in Kilkeel, Co. Down,Ireland. There is a William Knox living in Derryogue, Co. Down. Not sure if he is a brother or a father.James Knox died in Ireland. His wife Ellen nee Irving immigrated to Canada with 2 children.Nothing is know about John Knox.Whether he immigrated to Canada is not really known. These names are not typically Irish. In Ireland from what I can make out, there were farmers and there were ship or boat builders. So mine were ship builders and they were Orangeman from Northern Ireland. Church of Ireland were Presbyterians.Presbyterians were normally from Scotland. Was there a CODE to adhere to, to become an Orangeman ? A member of the family has the handed down family's orange banner. Were each orange banner different ? Did it tell the story of that family ? Were there tell tale secrets hidden in the pictures on the banner of that family ?
George Knox was buried in the Wesleyan Section of the Burial Grounds in Saint John in 1846. Would they be related to the Reformer, John Knox having rather English names ?? I find that Irish research very difficult to research in Ireland and I don't know how best to start.Doesn't seem easy when research resources are limited.I would love to trace my way back in research to Scotland.

Kind regards
Jeanette

Does anyone have a tree in Ireland that includes a James Knox, b 1798ish disappearing from record about 1820?

thanks for all this new info.I do not live in johnston co,but am planning a trip later this spring.I heard there is a knox family geanology book.marshall wallaces teasing made him a super religious man.two of his sisters had children and were not married,he never spoke to them even though they all lived in close proximity to one another. he was super strict as a father, but my grandmother dearly loved him.that is one reason it is important to me to learn as much about his family history.hope the sun is shining on you today. thanks again

Hi! I had just decided to check back into this thread and saw your reply! My email address I wrote down in my original posting was compromised and I have been unable to get into it and read my email. So my new one is: Z1880s@yahoo.com.

Anyway, this is really neat that you're a distant cousin! My (maiden) name is Susan Ackerman. If you want to get in touch I could scan some photos for you.

Which Thomas Knox married Susanna Walkingshaw?

Thomas and Susanna married in about 1680.
The only records I can find on ScotlandsPeople are for their two sons, as follows:

Jun 14,1681 John Knox born in Glasgow. Parents: Thomas Knox and Susanna Walkingshau
Feb 25,1683 Thomas Knox born in Glasgow. Parents: Thomas Knox and Susanna Walkingshau

I can find no marriage record or birth records for the parents. Thomas is such a common Knox name.

The only birth record I can find is for a Thomas Knox, born in Glasgow on May 2, 1643 to Thomas Knox & Bessie Spang.

However, this Thomas Knox was a rich merchant who migrated to Belfast, became an MP, became Chief Magistrate, and married Mary Brice in 1679, and had three girls: Frances in 1679, Mary in 1680, and Anne in 1682. I think he also turned down a peerage because he had no male issue.

Nearly every public tree in Ancestry.com indicates that he also married Susanna Walkingshaw. This is not believable.

So, the issue is, who is the Thomas Knox who really married Susanna Walkingshau? Does anybody know?

Re: Where does the name Knox come from?

The forebear of the Knox family was said to be Adamus, of Saxon origin, who received the barony of Cnoc or Knox in Renfrewshire as part of a dowry. The first recorded spelling of the name was that of John de Cnoc, his son, in 1260 in the charter lists for Renfrewshire. For many generations this family held the castle of Ranfurly (between present day Glasgow and Greenock).

Knox Family Origins
The following is an account of the origin of the Knox family from John Frederick Knox, writing from county Mayo in Ireland in 1825.

"Their forebears had come to England from Saxony where their ancestors had reigned for centuries. Of this royal family three brothers were the reigning princes at the time of their coming to England around 450 A.D, Hengist, Horsa, and Uchter. Soon after this period Uchter laid the foundations of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumberland.

Later we find the Saxon name of Uchter had softened to Utred. His son Adamus maried the lady Isabella, the daughter of Walter the High Steward of Scotland and obtained in her dowry four baronies in Renfrew. The names of these four baronies were Knox, Ranfurly, Craigends, and Griffcastle.

Adamus then left Dunbar and established his residence in Knox. He came to be described as Adamus de Knox and his descendants took the surname of Knox. For many generations they were based at the castle of Ranfurly between present day Glasgow and Greenock."

One story has it that Adamus and Cybilla his wife were given their surname by her father who was the high sheriff of Scotland. He gave her as a wedding gift a plot of ground which contained a large rock or stone (in Gaelic cnoc).

I sent a reply to your email. My name is Scott Knox and my Grandfather and Grandmother were Harold Ackerman Knox and Gladys Knox. He was born in 1905 and lived in Pasadena, before moving to San Diego. I beleive they also lived in Scottsdale, AZ for a short while.
So, it sounds like your Great-Grandfather's Sister was my Great Grandmother. So, Fred and Wilhemina Ackerman are probably my Great-Great Grand parents as well. Most likely, that makes us second cousin's sharing that relationship.
I found your posting, while attempting to fil in details oin my family tree on FaceBook

I moved to Lowvalley 5 years ago, which is within a couple of miles of both Netley Park and Rappa. I have been researching my own family tree for the last year and am trying to establish the link between my husbands ancestors to the Ormsby family of Ballycastle, and the link between my own ancestors to the Knox families, but I have only just started this side of the research so it will be a long road. Can you tell me where is the bast place to get information on these families if you dont mind?

Thanks, Tina.

I wanted to clear up some misinformation that was just posted to this board. There is a town known as Carleton Place, located just West of the city of Ottawa, Ontario. There was once a Carleton County, located just South of Ottawa. The county recently was amalgamated with the city of Ottawa to form a new, larger municipality. There is plenty of history to be found on both by simply doing a search on Google, examples attached below.

http://www.carletonplace.ca/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carleton_County,_Ontario
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~oncarlet/

Good luck on your search.

Re: Captain Patrick Knox of Mecklenburg Co, NC

Hello, Kenneth -- always good to hear from a cousin.

I'm sorry to report that we still don't know HOW Patrick fits. I believe that the FTDNA Knox DNA Project offers our best chance for leads to solve this mystery. We've proven (with DNA evidence) he is NOT related to "Old" John Knox and Jean/Jane Gracey of Thyatira, but appears to have at least some distant connection to the Steele Creek Knoxes.

Also, based on their respective estate records, it is clear that Captain Patrick Knox was somehow kin to Captain James Knox who m. Lydia Gillespie (grandparents of President Polk); however, none of Captain James male descendants have been identified/proven, so until that happens it is unlikely we'll prove the James/Patrick connection through the Knox DNA. This is important, since it appears (to me) that Captain James has been confused with a younger James Knox (who likely removed to Georgia with his brothers) who WAS the son of "old" John Knox & Jean/Jane. I believe that John Knox who m. Hannah Reid was in fact the brother of Captain James Knox -- but also NOT the son of "old" John Knox & Jean/Jane of Thyatira. Unfortunately there has been so much misinformation published regarding the descendants of "old" John & Jean/Jane, we may never be able to correct it.

There are many "theories" about how these Mecklenburg /Rowan/ Lincoln Knoxes MIGHT be connected; however, none have been proven -- so be very careful to examine the "facts" whenever someone tells you they have proof -- since it is likely nothing more than unsupported speculation.

Meanwhile, rest assured that any new breakthroughs in this case will be posted on my "Tale of Two Johns" Webpage at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bruckner/k...!

Good luck with your research.

All the best, Peggy

I am looking for parents of James Knox who was born about 1794, maybe in TN and died in Rhea Co. TN 9 Mar 1859. He married to Elizabeth (Betsy) Ellis 17 Apr 1817. They had children Benjamin, E? (male), George, James Jr. and Lydia. Lydia was married in 1860 in Rhea Co to John Henry Ward. After James died Betsy remarried. Lydia is my ancestor. I don't have parents for either James Knox or Betsy Ellis. Would appreciate any help.
Ida Madison idamadison@aol.com

for what it is worth, i'm reading historian Robert Leckie's book GEORGE WASHINGTON'S WAR, and Leckie comments that Henry Knox, Revolutionary War general, was a decendent of William Knox, reformer John Knox's brother. Henry Knox engineered the NOBLE TRAIN OF ARTILLERY, Washington's crossing of the Delaware, and much more. Very cool guy and instrumental in winning the war.
