Fun to hear the tidbits, while we are snowbound and without power here in W. Washington... except for our generator... so it may be a LONG while b4 i can do more research in the old country records...the Kostelniks that I found on my mom's side went back to the mid 1850's, and were all in Catholic church books... in present day Slovakia. At that time, the Austrian Hungarian Empire encompassed a very large area, so it is difficult to pinpoint more documentation unless you find the 'ancestral village'...best of luck with that Russian!

thanks for your response. My grandmother (Anna Kostelnik) and her siblings ended up worshiping at Roman Catholic Churches. I some times wonder if it just made a difference to which church was in their community. I do know that the family spoke russian and Michael Kostelnik's death certificate listed Austria as country of birth.
Thank you for posting your info about the Kostelniks in your family. I will look back into the church records when i get a chance...perhaps your Michael and my Maria were distant cousins in the old country, altho all the records and family history i have from my mom is that they were devout Roman Catholic, so not so likely. dorothy

I have some information to add about the Kostelniks. My great grandfather was Michael Kostelnik originally from Austria and lived in Wolf Run Ohio. Founding father of All Saints Russian Orthodox Church. May have had a brother Nicholas also lived in Wolf Run. Michael died in 1918 (influenza.) He was married to Mary Kochan Kostelnik there is the possibility he was married to a Maria Rodak July 27 1909 prior to his marriage to Mary Kochan.I have a extractus of his marriage to Maria Rodak lists Thekla Paveliak Rodak as Maria's mother.)The Paretes sponsi for Michael Kostelnik was Andreas and Anna Filyak Kostelnik. Family history does list a Fidak as a relation. Mary Kochan Kostelnik's sister was listed as Mary Fidak of Empire in obituary. He had 5 children Andrew birth 1911 death 1969, Tille, Anna birth 1915 death 2010, Mary 1917 death 2004 and Sophia birth Jan 19, 1919 death Sept 21, 1919.

Vlado,

My apologies, I was so excited that I mistakenly called you 'Adam'! May I inquire your whereabouts in Slovakia? I believe the 'ancestral village' of my grandfather (Kvokacka) was just north of Raslavice, but I am having difficulty with locating my mother's maternal side (Kasprik). I am looking to find current and old info on the names of the villages in that area so I can further search church records. Thanx in advance for any suggestions!

Dorothy S.

Hello Barb and Adam,
I am interested in your connections... Mine is a bit removed as I do not have specific knowledge of any Kostelniks that emigrated to the US. However I have recently found that my maternal great grandmother, Maria Kostelnik or Koscelnyik ... or... :) married my great grandfather (Kvokacka)and they resided in the area of current day Presov, Slovakia. I was having some success researching online church records, but when my mom passed away this past spring I had a hard time revisiting those sites. Your recent communications have re-ignited my interest, and I hope to hear more. My grandpa, John (Janos) did settle in Pennsylvania when he first came, married Agnes Kasprik, later moved to NYC ... Kostelniks would have been his cousins.
My paternal great grandmother, Mary Kostelnik(Kvokac'ka) lived in the Saris region of what is now the Slovak Republic ...although many of her children emigrated she did not... there are many church records from that area that have 'Kostelnik's'. My Mary was born in 1856, her father was Andreas Kosczelnik ...these records are available in the FamilySearch: Slovakia, Presov Region Church Books collections, which date back to 1592... best of luck :), dorothy

I have been reading the microfilm from Slovinky so maybe next time..I will need to search the older records first. Is it possible to find out what the connection is with the tree on Ancestry? I remember that when I had Family Tree Maker, you could check the relationship between two people. Just curious!!

I will let you know if I am able to figure this out!
Wow! I wish I could answer ANY of those questions other than "I don't know"! :-( I'll keep this info and hope we can find out more that might indicate a connection!

I only know who Stif's wife and children were. :-( It seems he's the only Kostelnik in the US without a father or siblings! :-(

Thanks for writing, and I'm so glad to hear my tree has been a help. I'll share this info with my hubby, who I'm sure will be intrigued as I am.
Barb

Hi Barb,
I am trying to help my mother-in-law research the Uhrin family. Your tree has been very helpful, thanks! Her aunt and uncle were Anna Uhrin and Gabor Kostelnik. I was wondering if you knew what/if there was a connection between Steve/Stif and Gabor/Garbor?

Also..do you have any idea who the Jewish jeweler was that paid Steve's way to the US?! I realized while seaching passenger lists that Gabor was on the same ship at the same time as my great-grandfather! I knew that that date sounded very familiar! It was Aug. 21, 1901. And the strangest coincidence is that my great-grandfather was Jewish and a jeweler! But, this is Gabor, not Steve and also not 1896. I am still just surprised to discover that these two families were on the same ship!!

If I could offer any information, please let me know!

Hi, Doug,
I believe you will be amazed at how much you will pick up from ancestry.com, and not just about your immediate family! :-) For people who were born after 1930, your best bet is the public records. But you can find so much more... census records that go back decades, military records (like draft registration cards with lots of great info on them and with your relatives' actual signature!), passport applications with photos, naturalization applications... it's -- well, as I said, amazing! :-)
Barb

Hi Barbara,
It seems there were some really common Kostelnik names. My brother, father, and grandfather were all Joseph's. There are Lots of Anna's as well.

I picked up a 14 free trial to this site to see if I can glean any information from my immediate family. I am waiting for my mom to drop a huge book in front of me and say "have at it".

Doug
www.kostelnik.org
My name is Dawn Kostelnik..my grandfather was John Jsmes Kostelnik..his family came from Slovenski in Slovakia. His father was Michael Kostelnik and his mother was Mary Homulous. He said that five brothers came to Canada and that his father stayed in Lethbridge Alberta Canada area and the others went to the US. We are having a Kostelnik family re-union in Lethbridge Alberta this summer. Myself and my three brothers and my father John Kostelnik will be the only family there with the last name of Kostelnik
Zlatica!

:):):)... ok I'm so hooked! I had no idea I could access those church records without going to Slovakia, or at least visiting an FHL and requesting them to order the correct microfiche!!!!

so, after many hours, I found my GP's birth/baptismal record :). ... now that i can 'read' Latin, Slovak, and GERMAN!!! ... I know there is much more to uncover, many new pathways to explore, i can even contemplate starting on the german side of the family tree, over the YEARS to come...

Have to take a break and install some software ...

Your info has been so helpful, i'm curious, are you a 'professional'?, or have you been researching your own family/if so for how long? (wondering how long it will take me to acquire the 'expertise'?)

most sincerely- dorothy

You might want to connect with the descendants if their ancestor was from same village as yours.
I do not have a paid subscription so can not help looking for his manifest.
Is this your Steve (Stif) in http://ssdi.rootsweb.com If yes, than his SS-5Form should have his place of birth and parents names.
STEVE KOSTELNIK 08 Nov 1875 Oct 1965 (Pennsylvania) (none specified) 192-07-4736 Pennsylvania SS-5 Letter

Wow, you are very helpful! Thank you!

I remember seeing a list of passengers with Stif/Steve's name on it, but now I can't seem to find it. Perhaps I'm remembering wrong. My paid subscription is not active at this time, so I'll have to look for it later. I don't have it linked to him in his profile, which surprises me.

I will check out those links you shared, for sure!

thank you,
Barb

Thank you! I have a note on my genealogy map that some Kostelniks were from Kosice (with a mark above the s). According to what you're saying, that is a better fit for my husband's grandparents than Bratislava. Where are you located? Do you have any Kostelniks in your tree?

I'll reply to your other posts ASAP.

thanks again,
Barb (Binder) Kostelnik

Hello Todd! ... I see you post is quite dated, nevertheless I'm intrigued by your story. I've recently discovered that i had a great-grandmother Mary Kostelnik - MY grandfather's mother... My estimate is that she would have been born about 1860-65... It would be way to coincidental with all the 'Joseph's' and 'Mary's' out there, that yours and mine would be siblings! Still can't help but wonder... Do you know approx. your Grandfather Jozef's birth year and have any other info on Demetrius(was he originally a 'Bordowsky', or was that back another generation? ... also any specifics about the church affiliation? (Greek or Roman Catholic)

Hi Kostelnik people! :) I randomly came across your thread and am amazed and curious... especially about anyone researching 'old world' Kostelnik connections... i recently found info on my grandpa's draft registration indicating that his mom was Mary (prob. 'Maria') Kostelnik ...all i know about her is that she married a Gyorgy Kvokacka ... (and I have their photo!) i believed they remained in Austria/Hungary (present day Slovakia between Bardejov an Presov in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains)... my grandpa, John, was born in 1883 and was the oldest (he emigrated at 17 and eventually settled in wilkesbarre,pa. (so those pa. kostelniks might be his cousins...) ... However, my thought was that his parents would be in their late teens, early 20's when he was born, so ... Mary Kostelnik might be in the 1869 Austrian-Hungarian census-that is available thru the LDS family history library catalogue... BUT i do not read hungarian, german or slovak :(... anyone out there know how to access that kind of info?

Nice to "meet" you, Joseph. There were 3 Joseph Kostelniks living in this 2-family until one passed away at age 82 about 10 years ago. Now there are two. :-) We're originally from the North Side of Pittsburgh... can't find a connection with the Homestead Kostelniks, yet.

Barb Kostelnik
