I have information on the Kukkuk progenitor (stamvader) in South Africa as well as his children and grandchildren if you are interested. Hendrik Coenraad Kukkuk From the Cape Archives: KAB CO 3907, 57 dated 1817: requesting burgership of the Cape Colony, signed by the landrost J G Cuyler, Uitenhage. In it landrost Cuyler says that Hendrik has lived in the colony during 11 successive years and showed favourable conduct and character. If he was in SA for 11 yrs it is possible that he arrived in SA c1806.
Let me know if you are interested in exchanging info as I am continually updating my Kukkuk database. The stamvader had several children including 3 sons of whom only one had sons, and then only one of these 3 had sons but he had 7.
My gradmother was Maria Elizabeth Kukkuk and was one of 13 children of whom 11 survived beyond childhood. Most of the Kukkuk descend from this family of 11 (7 of whom were boys) children. The names of the 7 were: Johan Coenraad, Hendrik Coenraad, Frederik Johannes Jacobus, Petrus Johannes Jacobus, Charles, Willem, and Rudolph. Hope this helps someone. Regards, Maureen

Have met Kukuks in Janesville, Kukucks in Madison and heard of others as well. Let's collaborate. I have KUKUK, KUCKUCK and KUKUCK data and records. Let's work together, okay? I collaborate with two other KUKUK researchers in the US and there are too many coincidences to ignore. my email: takukuk@aol.com

Hi Pieter

I am the lawyer from Pretoria.

A few notes - we have found archives that indicated the two brothers, one Jan and the other Heinrich, landed in the Cape in 1836. Jan moved to Port Elizabeth and his son, farmed in the Uitenhage area - he has 13 children of which my grandfather, Willem (Will) was one.

The family tree would be:

Jan Conraad (or Coenraad)born 1861 (son of original Jan, the patriarch), died 1951 (married to Johanna Carolina Botha) with 13 children:
Jan (died in the 80's, my dad helped transport the body to PE for burial), Freddie, Henry, Piet, Charles, Will (my grandfather, died 1986), Dolf, Olive, Hester, Alice, Jane, Elizabeth (Liz) and Charlotte, who died in infancy.

Pieter, one must also remember that many of the names and proununciations changed over the years and when they arrived - to suit the Dutch environment. The original surname was KUKUCK, but in the 1800's there were also many named Kukuk in the German/Poland part of then Prussia. Also a lot in Hamburg, Germany.

Intrestingly enough, the surname pops up as a Jewish surname in the Galicia area.

See

"Kuckuck • Kuczer • Kudes • Kudesch • Kudisch • Kudler • Küdorf • Kuen • Kufel • Kufell • Kufer • Kufermann • Kufernik • Kuffer • Kuflewicz • Kuflewitz • Kuflewski • Kuflig • Kuflik • Küfus(s) • Kugel • Kügel • Kugeler • Kugelmas • Kugelmass • Kugelrand • Kugelrund • Kugler • Kügler • Kuh • Kühdorf • Kuhfel • Kuhfell • Kühfus • Kühfuss • Kühl • Kuhlbauer • Kuhlberg • Kühlberg • Kühlberger • Kühlbert • Kühlbett • Kühldorf • Kühlmann • Kühlstein • Kühlstock • Kühlstok • Kuhmann • Kuhmärker • Kühmel • Kuhmer • Kuhmerker • Kuhn • Kühn • Kühnberg • Kühner • Kühnholz • Kühnreich • Kühnwald • Kuhrfi(e)rst • Kuhrfürst • Kuhrmann • Kuj • Kujawski • Kuk • Kuke • Kuker • Küker • Kukler • Kuku • Kukuck • Kukuk •"

http://www.avotaynu.com/books/DJSGNames.htm

Galicia is in Poland and part of it is in Ukraine. There could have been Jewish persecution and they fled to Europe - some becoming Christians on the way? It is interesting that the surname in three different spellings should appear on a list of Galician Jews.

Coenie Kukkuk (Willem Coenraad), Pretoria, South Africa.

Found Welhelmina's grave inSt Paul's cemetary near Osterdock, Iowa, we are still trying to find the correct parents of Johan David Kukuk who also was known as John. I think you are related to Henrietta Kukuk who married Charles Hennrich. Fill us in on how this is and if you have any more information of Johan's parents. My husband thinks it was Andreas Kukuk but his other cousins think it was Michael Kukuk and Justine Koebnix. help

My grandfather came from Perry, OK. His name was Ernest and his father was Fredrich Kukuk. He had several brothers and sisters: Raymond, Clarence, Toots and Jo are about all I can remember. I haven't been to a reunion in years but they used to be held the first Sunday in May at the Lutheran Church in Perry. Grandpa had 3 sons, one of which was my father, Edward.
The last I had heard, Fredrich immigrated here from a town called Verchen, Germany with a brother, I don't know the brother's name. They went to Chicago then Fredrich moved to Oklahoma and his brother to the Wichita, KS area. I don't have dates but my grandfather was born in 1914 in Chicago, if that helps. Let me know if you find out anything else.

Hi, I am fairly new to family history and only discovered this week that I have cuckoo's in my family. (Sorry, couldn't resist the tease.)

This is what I know, Carl Kukuk is from Prussia. I don't know which ship he came over on. He married a Minna (Maiden name unknown) and had the following children: Augusta, Reaky, Amelia, Mary, Anna, Martha, Frank (the only son), and Minna.

Anna married Anton Hagibah Anderson, my mother's maiden name. Anna started out in Wisconsin but died in Groton, SD.

On the off chance that anyone is familiar with this line I though I would post here. I am just beginning on my research so I have little to share in return on the Kukuks.

:)

John David KUKUK and Wilhelmina Justine RECHOW

I am currently researching John David KUKUK and WIlhelmina Justine RECHOW. This is the information I have on them:

John David KUKUK
b. 24 June 1815 Nakel, Posen, Germany (Poland)
d. 27 Nov 1893, Ireton, Sioux Co, IA
bur. St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Ireton, Sioux Co, IA
Father: Michael KUKUK
Mother: Justina KOCHNIX

Wilhelmina Justine RECHOW
b. 9 June 1822 Nakel, Posin, Germany (Poland)
chr. 6 Sep 1822
d. 8 Aug 1857 Jefferson Twp, Clayton Co, IA [died in childbirth]
bur. St. Paul's Cemetery, Jefferson Twp, Clayton Co, IA
Father: Fredrich RECHOW
Mother: Anna WEGNER

John KUKUK and Wilhelmina RECHOW married 24 Nov 1841 in Nakel, Posin, Germany (Poland), supposedly in Josephine Church. They had nine children, Henrietta, Ottilie Caroline, Gustav Fredrick, Karl Hermann, Ida Auguste, John Edward, Theodore, and Emilie. I do not know the name of the ninth child; I am assuming the child died with Wilhelmina.

I do know some of the spouses of their children, including Henrietta's (Carl HENNRICH), Theodore (Caroline BALLWEBER), and Emilie (Benjamin RIEGEL).

If anyone has any additional information or corrections, I would greatly appreciate it. I am working towards putting my family history into a book for the 60+ members of my immediate and extended family, so I want to make sure everything is correct.

Thanks in advance for your help, and feel free to email me if you have or need more information.

Altough our family believes that my grandfather and his brother came to South Africa - I find it strange that they had such Afrikaans / Dutch names. I was told that my grandfarther's brother name was Petrus Mattheus - Peter Matthew - bible names. Did the Germans also use these names, and the Hendrik Coenraad - that also sems much more Dutch than German than Austrian - I don't know???? I also never heard my grandfather speak a word a German - not even an accent. Do you loose it over the years. He died in 1994 - about 12 years ago and I am sure he was 89 at the time - so he was born in 1905 - his oldest daughter was born in 1936, my dad in 1938 - to have your first born in those days at 31 seems a bit odd - my dad was born in Pelgrims rest and my Oupa had pictures of Bloedrivier and the Monument hanging in his house - we would also suggest to me that he must have been a true patriot and therefore I would rather go with the theory that he was actually born in South Africa and is maybe the son/grandson of one of the guys that came from Germany.

Thank you for the info. I don't think all the Kukuk's and Kukkuk's are related - always thought it was only a handful - but the name keeps popping up everywhere. I was in Pretoria a few years ago - at the Netherlands consulate - to get a transit visa on my way to Canada - I had to go to the Canadian consulate and had to turn around to go the opposite direction - just across from the consulate was a big blue board with "KUKKUK" in big bold white letters. One of the lawyers - I believe Pretoria has two. The Kukuk's from the States although they have also come from Germany seems to have a history of their own apart from the South Africans. It was also good to hear that we might have been royalty - maybe we should research that a bit - find aout why the royalties whould have moved to Germany. If any of you have more info - please let me know.

My dad passed away about 11 years ago and we received this information shortly after his death from a lady who had also lost her husband. She traveled to Germany and Austria to research the name. Unfortunately we have no way of contacting her again.
The Kukkuk name originated in Austria and was originally Austrian royalty. The correct name was in fact “von Kükkük”. Some of the family members moved to Germany where their royalty status was not recognized and they had to drop the “von” from the name (which indicates royalty). Many years later 2 brothers decided to move to South Africa and they settled in Port Elizabeth. The spelling then also changed to the way we have it today – Kukkuk. The 2 brothers then also split, one remaining in Port Elizabeth and the other moved to Bloemfontein. I am related to the brother that settled in Bloemfontein, and my grandparents are actually from a town called Ladybrandt on the Lesotho border.
I know John Kukuk was born in 1814 in Germany, married Wilhelmina Rechow, and died in 1888 in Sioux County, Iowa. I have yet to find his actual birth and death dates and the names of his parents.

Wilhelmina Rechow, daughter of Fredrich Rechow and Anna Wegner, was born in 1822 in Germany and died in 1857 in Iowa.

Their children were (as far as I know) Henrietta Wilhelmina, born 26 March 1848 Province Posen, Germany; married 28 March 1867 Guttenberg, Iowa, Charles Hennrich; died 5 May 1935 Iowa City, Iowa; and Theodore, who married Caroline Ballweber.

If anyone has any information on John Kukuk's line, please email me at kimknowlton@hotmail.com

Re: Kukuk / Piel family

I have spoken to a German lady, apparantly the Kukkuk bird in Germany is a big bird and it will use other bird's nests to lay their eggs in. Almost sound familiar - Lol! I have also hoped to gather more info regarding the Kukkuk-family - we prounouce it Koek-Koek - but I have heard people use it as the "u" in Hut - KUKKUK and some people have replaced the "u" with an "a" . I tried a few times to make contact with Kukkuk's on the net, but had not much luck. I don't know if my grandfather was born here, I have always been told that his brother and himself arrived in South Africa when they was about 18 or 20. My grand-father went to Ficksburg and his brother to Bloemfontein. My grand-father married a Esterhuizen and they had 5 kids. I have never met any of the other Kukkuk's. There is only 5 Male Kukkuk's left on our side. My dad - Piet (Petrus Mattheus 67 years), my uncle Hennie (Hendrik Coenraad 65 years), myself Pieter (Petrus Matheus 33 years), my brother Marius (31 years) and my cousin Henkie (Hendrik Coenraad 31 years) Both my brother and I have girls and I do not know when my cousin will get married. So this might be end of the Kukkuk's I call family.
