Hello Lee Anne,
(And welcome to the fun, Tammy – you posted while I was retyping!)

This will be my third attempt at responding.... I'm having an issue with losing my posts before I finish.

I was not able to drop this mystery from my mind mainly because one of my third great-grandmothers was also named Sophronie Vegiard dite Labonte. (Mine was born 1825 at Beloeil.) Also, I'm genealogically obsessed. :)

At first I was nearly certain your Sophronie could not possibly be Isaac's sister... but now I am not so sure. A couple of points:

1. Death records are notoriously unreliable. The subject is never the informant, and we have to depend on a series of people who may not know for certain or not be invested to “get it right.” In the shortest chain a friend or family member answers questions, a doctor or funeral director writes notes, and then a clerk hopefully records accurately what was written.

2. French-Canadians of this period had no concept of “first” or “middle” names. A child was given a series of names at birth – usually 3 or so more than what was recorded by the priest in the baptismal register – and the person could use any or none of the names during his or her lifetime. A case in point is MY Sophronie Labonte, who was baptized simply as “Francoise.”

That said, I have found several things for your records:

In Sophronia LaBounty's Vermont death record her date of birth is given as 15 October 1853. And for the record, her place of death was St. Johnsbury Hosptial.

I find no female Vegiard or Labonte born on or near that 1853 date in St-Chrysostome to Damase and Exupere or anyone else.

I believe there is a good possibility that Sophronia and Joseph were married in Vermont, perhaps as far away from where they resided in Vermont as Burlington. You will need to find this record to have hope of easily proving her parents' names. (When you do locate it, will you please let me know?)

In the 1910 Census, Joseph and Sophronia were at Irasburg, Orleans Co., Vermont. This record states they both arrived in the US in 1882. The oldest child with them at the time (called Clifford) was born about 1885 in Vermont, but the next child listed, daughter “Dora”, was born in Canada. This is the only time Dora is listed as born in Canada (including the time in the 1900 Census when she is called “Dana” and a son of her parents) – and she died unmarried at Barton, VT on 11 Feb. 1969.

There are other errors from the 1910 Census, as the couple can be found in the 1880 US Census as Joseph and Saphronia at Fairfield, Franklin Co., Vermont. You probably know they were in Newport, Vermont in 1900, where Sophronia's birth is listed as “Oct. 1853” which does agree with her death record of 1922.

Joseph C. LaBounty was remarried at age 72 in Barton, Vermont to “Mrs. Joseph Freehart.” The marriage date was 8 Sept. 1924. Joseph was a farmer, born in Canada, the son of “Theophalie LaBounty” and “Julia Paresois.” The name of the officiating party was “Rev. Edward E. Marion” of Barton. If you subscribe to Ancestry.com the link is: http://search.ancestry.ca/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1606&iid...
“Theophalis” is Latin for “Theophile.”

Clifford Labounty of Newport, Vermont was the informant for the death of Joseph C. Labounty of Craftsbury, Vermont. Joseph's wife is given as “Selina Labounty.”The deceased was born 30 May 1853 in Canada, and the son of Theopholis Labounty and Julia Unknown, according to the record:
http://search.ancestry.ca/browse/view.aspx?dbid=1607&iid...

Also, I expect that Joseph LaBounty had a sister who is also listed in the Vermont Death Records:
Josephine LaBounty Duso, wife of Frank Duso, died 17 June 1937, apparently at Enosburg Falls, Vermont. Her birth date is given as 25 March 1852 in “Canada,” and she was the daughter of “Theophalis LaBounty” and unknown. The informant is Mrs. Ida Deatte of Enosburg Falls.

So what is to be made of Sophronia? I can find others named a variation of “Sophie Labonte” of the approximately correct age in the US before her 1872 marriage year, but nothing that is any more than the conjecture we have currently. I find no marriage for any variation of “Sophronie” in Quebec in the indexes available to me.

Next I decided to track Isaac's family in Quebec and see what could be learned. This is the result. I have drawn a tentative opinion, but would be remiss if I did not spend many more hours researching this family before stating it. I will allow you to formulate your own theory.

NOTE: I recommend you make a time-line at some point with “places” included to get the big picture. This will help you to know in which parishes to make a “Labonte” study.

Here is how I started this research. Isaac's family can be found at Shefford, PQ in the 1861 Census:

Damas Vegiard, cultiateur, age 33
Exupere Vaillancourt, age 34
Damas fils age 14
Joseph age 13
David age 11
Asaie (Isaac), age 10
Febrenie, age 7 (9?)
Henriette, age 4
Felix, age 3
Cyril, age 2
All are Catholic, all born in Quebec Province.

I next turned to the marriage of the parents. The Drouin version is all but illegible, so in the Quebec Parish Records at FamilySearch.org:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11857-163355-40...

Truncated and translated it reads -
On 28 Oct 1845 at St-Remi-de-Salle (Napierville) after the publication of 3 banns of marriage at their two parishes, Damase Vegiard (cultivateur), minor son of David Vegiard and Archange Savarie (note: Savary is the standard spelling) of the parish of St. Jean Chrysostome, married Exuper Vaillancourt, adult daughter of Joseph Vaillancourt (cultivateur) and Marie Daganet “of this parish.” Witnesses were Pierre and Antoine Savarie (sic) brothers of the groom and Pierre and Isidore Vaillancourt brothers of the bride, who along with the couple declared they could not sign (their names). The priest was named Bedard, and he signed alone.

I expected to find Isaac's baptism under the name “Asaie” but he is listed as “Isaac Vegiard”, born on the 11th and baptized on the 15th of February 1851 at St-Chrysostome. His godparents were Isaac Patenaude and Agathe Vegiard, no relationship noted.

I next turned to the sister with the unusual name, “Febrenie Labonte” who was age 7 or possibly 9 in 1861. I found a child born to Damase and Exupere called Marie-Febrone, born “the night before” and baptized on 10 October 1852. Her godparents were Laurent Vegiard and Josephte Deniaud.

NOT making an exhaustive search of each year in the subject parishes, but searching in the indexes of various search engines, I was able to locate in the original parish records these other children born to Damase and Exupere:

Joseph, born 27 and baptized 28 April 1848 at St-Chrysostome, godparents Joseph Vaillancourt and Marie Dagenais (I would venture these are Exupere's parents, the baby's maternal grandparents).

Damase, born on the 8th and not baptized until the 21st of October 1849 also at St-Chrysostome.

Felix Vegiard dit Labonte, born and baptized on 3 May 1857 at St-Joseph-d'Ely (Valcourt), godparents were Joseph Provost and Marie Basinet.

Cyrille Vegiard dit Labonte, born the 5th and not baptized until 16 May 1858 at St-Joseph-d'Ely (Valcourt), godparents were Joseph Fontaine and Sophie Vasseur.

Now to find other places this family lived and in what years I looked for additional parish records for the children. Of these children (siblings of Isaac) the following marriages were found:

8 Feb 1869 at St-Bernardin (Waterloo), Damase Vegiard dit Labonte of St-Joseph-d'Ely, adult son of Damase Vegiard dit Labonte and Exupere Vaillancourt of St-Joseph-d'Ely, and Agnes Ledoux, adult daughter of the deceased Louis Ledoux and the deceased Sophie Maille of “this parish.”

As you know, Isaac married in 1875 at St-Bibiane – parents were living and of “St-Malachie.”

From bms2000.org – transcriptions of parish and civil records – this is the ONLY record I did not see an original of - on “1883-09-04” ( I HATE when they write dates like that) Joseph Grignon, widower of Elisabeth McClure married Henriette Labonte at Burlington, Vermont, she was the widow of Joseph Recheleau (Rocheleau?) and the daughter of Damase Labonte and “Isildera” Vaillancourt. The couple is noted as residing at “So Burlington.”

29 April 1889 at St-Fulgence (Durham-Sud) after the publication of 1 bann of marriage -
Cyrille Labonte, farmer of “Newport Etats-Unis” (Newport, Vermont, US) adult son of Damase Labonte, farmer of the parish of Ste-Christine d'Acton and the deceased Exulpere Vaillencourt, married Delima Cote, adult daughter of Sylvain Cote and Adeline Marquis.

Among other things we now know that Exupere died between 1875 (Isaac's marriage) and April 1889 (Cyril's marriage) and some if not all of the parishes where Damase resided between those years.

No smoking gun I'm afraid, but plenty to sink your teeth into.... OK, so who is this Joseph C. LaBounty was my next question.

His parents are more or less named correctly in the Vermont marriage record of 1924. They are:
Theophile Vegiard dit Labonte and Julie Parisot...

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11898-55572-34?...

Married at St-Charles-sur-Richelieu on the 29th of January 1850 after the publication of 3 banns of marriage in “this parish” and “at Beloeil” (you should have seen my eyes bulge at THAT) and “at Varennes”, Theophile Labonte dit Vegiard, minor son of the deceased Joseph Labonte farmer formerly of Beloeil and of Julie Rainaud (HERE I let out a “Whoop!”), and Julie Parisot living at Saint-Charles, adult daughter of the deceased Joseph Parisot formerly a farmer at Varennes and of the deceased Louise (Faverot?).

First let me say I believe Julie Parisot's parents are actually Joseph Dalpe dit Pariseau and Louise Favreau who married in 1822 at Varennes,

Next let me say “Hello Cousin!” MY Sophronie Vegiard dite Labonte b. 1825 Beloeil was also a child of OUR Joseph Vegiard-Labonte and Julie Renaud dite Blanchard of St-Mathieu de Beloeil, a sister of your Theophile!

Best regards,
Shari Strahan, Genealogist
Massachusetts

Hello,
I was very excited to read your posts on the Vegiard dit Labounty line. I recently discovered that my husbands GG Grandfather (Joseph) is the son of Damase Vegiard dit Labounty and Exupere Vaillancourt. Looks like Joseph is the brother of your Isaac!

Here are the kids I have found for Damase and Exupere. Damase, Joseph, David, Isaac, Eugenie, Henriette, Felix and Cyril. I found this is the 1861 Canadian census.

Is this what you have as well?

Regards,
Tammy M.
Thank you! It looks like a possibility that my father's great grandmother Sophronia was sister to my mother's great grandfather, Isaac. I had assumed they may had been cousins. My uncle paid someone to do research and both Isaac and Damase were dit Vegiard in that line.

Interesting puzzle, regardless of degree of relation. I will have to do more research on Sophronia/ Joseph C. marriage. The old Canadian priests were crazy about using "Joseph", but someone in family thinks he may have been called "Clifford"

Your research is much appreciated.

Regards, Lee Anne Labounty Tapp

Labonte is a dit nomme (think "also called") for different surnames. The most common are Clement, Bray, Marotte and Vegiard, but there are many others.

They all may be closely related - that is not unusual, or not at all.

Sophronia's death record names her father as Damase Labonte, however.

I cannot find her marriage to Joseph. Do you know the name of the parish for that?

Isaac's marriage at St-Bibiane is under the full name of "Vigiard dit Labonte" and gives his parents as Damase Vigiard dit Labonte and Exuper Vaillancourt. They were all of St-Malachie of Melbourne. The standardized spelling of this name would be: Vegiard.

Marie Alphonsine Lapierre's parents are named as what looks like Milazippe Lapierre and Clothilde Honorine Chartier. This family was also of St-Malachie.

Regards,
Shari Strahan

Thanks for reply. My info is mostly based on written family history from some great-aunts. Isaac was married to Alphonsine Lapierre 05 Apr 1875 Ste Bilbane de Richmond, Que.Isaac's father may have been Damase Labonte.

And yes, my Sophronia Labonte died Apr 11 1922 in "Barton" (near St. Johnsbury), buried St. Mary's Newport. She was married to Joseph C. Labonte/LaBounty 27 dec. 1872.

I was curious that family info had Sophronia with Labonte as maiden name and the married a Labonte. Also curious how my maternal and paternal Labontes are related.

Regards, Lee Anne LaBounty Tapp

Chris, I am very interested. Reason: I have over 2000 names in my family tree. It starts with Jean Dandurand:b 1637 in France. They are my mothers side, but on my fathers side I only have 3 generations ( 6 people ) on my fathers side. What I need is their siblings and families.
This is my story;
Hello, my name is Robert LaBonte 65 years old. My grandparents were Jules Marcheterre married Demerise Gagnon. We of the Dandurand dit Marcheterre line. My mother is Germaine Marcheterre married Ernest LaBonte, and I am looking for my ancestors, so that we can match intelligence and fill in empty spaces, I am from Oregon, United States, I moved here from Salem, Massachusetts. All Marcheterre are related, we all came from: Jean Dandurand: b France, 1663, and his son Antoine Dandurand dit Marcheterre: (b) 1668 of France. He had two sons, and they came to Canada
Oh by the way I have a brother Roger Jules LaBonte.

Suzie,
Is there any way you could send me that information as well. I am trying to research the same things as what Jill is in fact, I believe that Jills' husband and I are cousins because Louis is my grandfather and Ambros Edward Labonte is my Great Grandfather. I am trying to find out what his parents names are and when and where they came from and the dates pertaining to their lives and so on.
I sure would appreciate any information you can give me.
Thanks again,

Joan Goodness/Dulak

Jill,

According to my father, William Goodness, the name changed happened when Louis Francis Goodness was born. His father Ambros Edward changed it at that time from Labonte to Goodness. I am trying to gather information from the goodness side and if you have any information I could use I would really appreciate it. Thanks and Good Luck

Joan Dulak
