I am excited about learning more about my family history. I am the great grand-daughter of Iola Reed and Lohman (Lehman) Lafayette. My father is Charles Lafayette and he is the son of Florence Ola Lafayette. My father birth certificate filed in Dallas, Texas has him listed with the last name of his mother maiden name being "Lafayette" and his school records reflect the last name of Harrison. I was always curious about the silky body hair, long eye lashes, and really would like to know more about the Lafayette family. My father was born with silky curly hair and his hair grow long.

Hey Rick, if you go to my family tree, the land deed is saved as a profile picture for Hugh Lafayette. I am not 100% sure of it's accuracy, but it is for the Tuscaloosa area, where Hugh lived at that time. I searched online for any other Lafayette's in the area at that time and didn't find anything to convince me that the document was not our Hugh Lafayette's.

I came across his name in the census records (1850, 1860 and 1870), all of which are saved to his profile in my tree. The 1860 and 1870 census list Daddy Hughie's father, Charles Vincent as the son of Hugh. The census records mostly state Ireland as Hugh's country of origin, but one lists it as Scotland. I have also searched the passenger lists to see if I could find when he came to America and where he sailed to, but you can only do so much online.

I assume that it was Momma Dee that told you about Vincent sailing when he was young. It is possible because the only record I have of him is the census, and since it was said that he sailed from age 15-20, that would put him being gone from 1872-1877; he would have been in Mississippi for both the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need a link to my tree.

I never realized there were so many with the surname of Lafayette. I, too, am a Lafayette, from Texas but relatives from Fouke, Arkansas and Shreveport. I believe my great great grandfather was born in Alabama. I am at a brick wall with Elias Lafayette...or atleast that is the name I have. It may have been Lige or Elijah. I'm stooped! My father's name is Charles Lafayette (1942, Shreveport).

Hello my name is Janice Mitchell and I’m the grand daughter of Scott Lafayette, son of Henry & Clarissa Lafayette.

Is this Rachel you reference the same daughter of Henry and Clarissa? I found her as a sibling to Scott Lafayette on the 1900 census; she was 21 and he 19. Other siblings were Lohman, Frederick, Ely, Gabriel, Jackson and Hester.

If you are related to her then it’s possible we are related.
Scott Lafayette (Rachel’s brother) had 3 children, Scott II, Mary 7 Elenora all now deceased.

I’d love hearing from you. Have a great day....

I have a book.."Adrienne" The Life of the Marquise de La Fayette. You would be quite proud to be of this family.. Adrienne's great grandfather was the Marechal Adrien-Maurice.. There were 5 girls in that family, Adreinne, Louise, Clotilde and two more I don't think I have the names for. They all lived at Hotel de Noailles in Rue Sait-Honore. Her grandfather's name was Louis. Her father's name was Jean d'Ayen born 1739. Her mother's name was Henriette Daguesseau, born 1737. This book on the life of Adrienne was written by Andre Maurois, published in 1961 in America.

I am looking for a connection from the La Fayette family to an English family by the name of Phelps or Povey living in England in the mid to late 1800's...but so far no luck...any help for me anyone?

Andy,
Yes, please do send a copy of the land deed. I would also like to know how you came across the name of Hugh Lafayette.
I have been looking for Charles Vincent's father for months and had no luck. I was told by my grandmother that Charles Vincent had left home at 15 and sailed on a ship until he was 20. Maybe she was mistaken?
I did find recently on the 1880 Census that he lived in Calhoun County at 20 yearls old.
Rick

Rick,
I have since found his gravestones at the cemetery. I have also found out who his father is, Hugh LaFayette, which was an Irish immigrant. But that is about all I know so far. I came across a land deed of a Hugh Lafayette in Tuscaloosa county that matches the timeline of Hugh's lifetime and I believe it was purchased by Hugh. If you would like, I can email you a copy. Other than that, I don't know Charles Lafayette's mother's maiden name or who her family was. Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

His father, John (or Jean possibly) was supposedly a cousin of the Marquis de LaFayette and born in France according to family history including a newspaper aticle about James written in the 1870's. However, it is also possible that he was born in Canada.

I'd be interested in the LaFayette information in your family

Since she immigrated to America from England in the late 1800's, and I have her ancesters at least back to her grandfathers....I have to assume the connection must be in a generation previous to the Marquis. Does anyone have any information on those ancestors?
