My greatgrandfather was William Young (sometimes Wm H. and sometimes Wm W.), born in Indiana in 1849. His father is listed as Peter Young, b. Canada, but that's all I have to go on. His mother was possibly Sarah.

Any hints?

From another thread on this board, by me:

Confused about what a dit name is? Read here: http://www.afgs.org/termphra.html

If your Lajeunesse ancestors trace to Canada, chances are very good their original surname (family name) may have been one in this abbreviated list of surnames which was "dit" Lajeunesse.

*Arcouet, Assailly, Audibert, Bergue, Bresse, Charles, Chevrier, Dandonneau, Desnoyers, Gour, Gregoire, Guillet, Hardouin, Lecoq, Migneron, Pigeau, Poirier, Raymond, Richard, Saumier, Trouillet, Valade*

A more extensive surname list of "dit" Lajeunesse can be found here: http://www.afgs.org/ditnames/index1.html

"Lajeunesse" literally translates to "the young". It a common "dit".

My Gr. Grandfather was Francois Magneron dit Lajeunesse and just recently I have started wondering about the dit part after finding it everywhere in my geneology searches. I had started thinking it meant of, and maybe Lajeunesse was a place. Well, still confused a bit, and now assuming the surname is Magneron. Can anyone put me on the right track?

Rhiamom,

The primary source above all others, since you can view the actual record is the Drouin Collection. It is accessible on-line though Ancestry.com. A paid subscription is required. The indexing is dodgey, but it's better than nothing. Ancestry also has a the Guide to Quebec Parishes, which I find indispensable. (This is not an Ancestry sales pitch, only letting others know what I use.)

familysearch.org has the Quebec Catholic Church Records, this site is free. It's not indexed, and the process to use it is more laborious. Knowing parishes and geography help. You can use the PRDH as an index (for records pre 1800). The resolution of the records can be better on familysearch, than the Drouin on Ancestry. I use all of these sources.

I have an ancestor who was slapped with his "dit" name, by fellow soldiers. It translates to "The Wrecker", and fortunately didn't stick beyond a generation.

You probably have deeper roots than you might know of, have you researched how many Filles des Roi, Filles A Marier are in your lines?

Think of it this way, by the 11th generation (those born around 1630-50) of your lines, and one line is as important as the other, you have 4000+ ggggggggggggrandparents.

This is sobering, The number of direct ancestors doubles every 25 years.

50 generations = 2 quadrillion+ ancestors
40 generations = 2 trillion+ ancestors
30 generations = 2 billion+ ancestors
20 generations = 2,097,150 ancestors
10 generations = 1012 ancestors
8 generations = 265 ancestors
7 generations = 128 ancestors
6 generations = 64 ancestors
5 generations = 32 ancestors
4 generations = 16 ancestors
3 generations = 8 = great grandparents
2 generations = 4 = grandparents
1 generations = 2 = parents

===========================================================

Let me know if you need anything, I'm happy to help or just be a sounding board to hurdle a brick wall.

I plotted the family data out in a private working tree on ACOM, that enables the system to help out searching.

I'm not seeing any indication of First Nation origin or Metis in the records I've looked at.

UPDATE: This Lajeunesse line traces to the surname Saumier/Sommier.

The original immigrant of this line to New France was Nicolas Sommier dit Lajeunesse, 5 Jul 1725 in Courtesoult-et-Gatay, Haute-Saône, France, Soldat au régiment de La Sarre, compagnie de Boschatel.(ficherorigine.com)

Post dates and locations

gilberte1947,

Including dates and locations, and also the sources you're using helps others understand the context, as well as review and evaluate the data.

There's a bit of a math problem in what you're (kind of) asserting.

Alexis Morin married Henriette Menard in 1857 (Maniwaki) (Drouin Collection).

They're enumerated in the 1861 Canadian Census, in Wright, Ottawa, Quebec. The surname is mangled. My transcription:

Alex Morin abt 1818
Henriette Menard, b abt 1823

Adeline b abt 1843
Louise b abt 1845
Luce b abt 1847
Marie b abt 1846
Therese b abt 1852
Alex b abt 1852
Francois b abt 1856 (actual 1853, Maniwaki)
Laurence b abt 1858 * (this is the first child of the 2nd marriage)

The 1871 Canadian Census lists the couple and their children living in Wright, Ottawa, Quebec. Alexis (Alexander in the census) approximate age is 55, birth year abt, 1816. The data on the two census is enough to assert with relative certainty, Alexandre Morin was born about 1816-18, give or take a year.

=======================================================

>>Now if Julie Morin were to be the daughter of this couple & she wed Stanislas Lajeunesse<<

The Julie Morin you're referring to was born abt 1823, and the math sez there is no possible way she was the daughter of this Alexis/Alexander Morin (b abt 1818). This why you should always include dates in your post. Same named persons crossed generations, it's hard keeping them straight, using approximate birth years helps differentiate which ones might be possibilities. I encourage the use of DATES, not "my ggggrandfather", etc.

=======================================================

>> There was an Alexis Morin who formed an alliance with an Anne Natawesi aka Pinesiwikijikokwe.<<

There are several variations of both the given and surname of the first wife of this Alexis/Alexandre Morin. The term "alliance" you're using to describe a marriage is awkward. They were husband and wife, their marriage was recognized as legitimate by the Catholic Church, apparently there is a marriage record in the Pembroke Missions Archive, however I don't have access to that resource to verify and evaluate.

Others have been researching this line, and there is plenty of data and resources to follow up and expand on. Note the date of this posting, the data is very recent. http://www.bytown.net/morinalexis.htm.

Treffle Lajeunesse (b 1839) is also listed in US census records as Treffik and Thrifle. I believe the correct spelling is Treffle.

He emigrated to the US, from Canada in 1869 with his wife Philomene (Bessette abt. 1938-9).

Philomene and Flora are one in the same person.

According to a family record that was done in the 1980's, Treffle(y) was the son of Edward La Jeunesse and Angeline LaPaure (sic). Philomene (Flora) was the daughter of Oliver Bessette and Sophie Robert.
I'm sorry to hear your mother is suffering from Alzheimer's. Since she's still living, I've sent you a private message, perhaps you can give me more specific info on her privately. I take it your father is deceased?

Putting a time line together is how to start, that's why years and places are important. The records exist to search, but finding your needles in a database haystack of 50 million records requires specifics. I can't quite follow the generations in your post. If you fill in the blanks I'll see what I can find.

===========================================================

Gen-1-(Living) Millet (b.19xx) married Romeo Houle (b.19xx?). What year and where (Ontario or Quebec) married? [You can send me this in a private message].

** does your mother have any deceased siblings? If so can you list them by name and about what year and where were they were born?

========================

Gen-2- (father (given name?)) Millet (b 18??-d abt 1946, Nominingue, Quebec) m. Julienne Mon Petit, correct? (she died in Nominingue, correct?)

=====================================

Gen-3- Charles Millet (b 18xx) married Eliza Lajeunesse (b 18xx)

===========================================================

Some of my questions may seem intrusive, I will post no data about anyone who is still living.

Year and place she died? Who did she marry (your father)? when and where? None of this needs to be exact.

If she is still living, can you post the full name of her mother? Was Lajeunesse her maiden name? What year did she die? Do you know about how old she was when she died, or about what year she was born and where? Who did she marry (your grandfather), his full name?

Do you have a list of siblings of your mother? Their years and places of birth?

As much as you can post can help determine your line of Lajeunesse ancestors.

ruhape99,

"Our lastname goes way back in Maine"

Perhaps those variations are true of your line of Lajeunesse ancestors, but all those who have the surname Lajeunesse in their ancestry are not connected, nor did they all originate in Maine. That's what your statement implies.

Lajeunesse is a "dit" name, and is connected to dozens of surnames. This thread has more info about surname Lajeunesse, as well as links to other pages where you can find more info about "dit" http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.lajeunesse/255/mb.ashx.

The overwhelming evidence is most of those in North American with Lajeunesse ancestry can trace their history to the Province Of Quebec, and further back to France.

Hi Karenjsloan,

I've mounted a database with the ancestry of Treffley Young on rootsweb.com. Enter the name of my db, wiscandeu, in the *go to database* on the World Connect project page.

Treffley was the son of Edouard Trouillet dit Lajeunesse and Angelique Meunier dite Lapierre.

Philomene Bessette's connection to Brother Andre Bessette is 4th cousin once removed. Philomene and Brother Andre descend from brothers who were children of Jean Besset dit Bristout and Anne Seigneur. This is quite a remote connection, but a blood connection none the less.

There's another indirect and non-blood connection to Saint Andre. It might account for the prevalent Brother Andre stories in this family.

Treffley Young's sister, Marie Salome Trouillet dite Lajeunesse, married Francois Xavier Besset. He was a brother of Isaac Valentine Bessett, the father of Brother Andre. Marie Salome was Saint Andre's aunt, by marriage.

**I've edited some of this info, Brother Andre was canonized to Saint Andre in October 2010.
I'd like to give Treffley Young his due. I think he deserves his name, and not what a census taker heard or a transcriber thought it looked like.

I have many documents for him. He was baptized as:
Trefflé Trouillet and married as Trefflé Lajeunesse. Trefflé is the standard French spelling of this unusual given name. His ancestors used the surname Trouillet dit Lajeunesse.

The surname Trouillet was dropped after immigration to the US. He adopted the dit name Lajeunesse as the only surname. If you are tracing this line in Canadian records, you will want to look for both surnames. All Lajeunesse are not connected, it was used as a "dit" to many surnames.

Bap records and marriage records of the children used the name surname Lajeunesse. It's last seen in the early 1900's (in parish records), and was Anglicized to Young by the entire family. No branches of this family use Lajeunesse.

His death record and headstone have the name Treffley Young.
Presumably, this is the name his immediate family and friends last knew him by.

So no, Thifle, Triffle, Treffik, Triflea, Frederick, etc.

RIP Treffley Young

Don, I left a comment on one of the profiles in your Trott Tree.

Try using the database on familysearch.org for Sainte-Gregoire-de-Nazianze, the records are much more legible. 98% of the parish records on familysearch.com have to be searched by hand, they are not indexed.

Do you know how to use this guide to Quebec Parishes [subscription to ACOM required]? Theses Morin and Lejeunesse families evidently moved around quite a bit, so map out and move around with them, and check nearby parishes as you discover more. This guide will help you understand which parishes to be looking for records. http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=BookList&dbid=4917....

Many non-French readers become quite proficient at reading the records, a small vocabulary can enable you to understand the records, there really isn't any way around this unless you want to invest in a researcher to do the research for you. Researching these records takes time and practice, practice, practice.

I'm posting this message I found on the Quebec mail-list, another person searching for the marriage, perhaps you might want to contact them? The message is only a year+ old. [I munged their email address, so it wouldn't be picked up by bots.] There were no responses to her query. Please note the Mignerom should probably be Migneron or could be Magneron.

From: "margaret giroux": honeybeartigger(at)sympatico(dot)ca
Subject: [Q-R] lajeunesse
Date: Tue, 22 Dec 2009 17:44:25 -0500

does any one know where and when Stanislaus Lajeunesse and Julie Morin were married
If i am on the right track his father was Michel
mignerom dit lajeunesse thank you

==========================================================

I found this bap record for a Euphrosine Morin, she could related to Julie Morin, as seen in the bap record of (son of Stanislas Lajeunesse and Julie Morin), Amable Lejeunesse. She could be a sister, and therefore the parents listed may be the parents of Julie Morin. http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&rank=...

=========================================================

Even for an advanced researcher, this search would take a lot of time. Please note, that not all Quebec Parish records survived, there are gaps. Parishes were required to keep two copies, as they served as the civil records as well.
I looked at the site, and signed up, but I found it very hard to pinpoint records. Like the St Gregoire records, I was trying for the births, and found it very hard to navigate. I had better luck with the site I found for all the marriages, of most of the children, and their children of Stanislas LaJeunesse and Julie Morin. Now dklart said, that looking at the actual record is better, but the Buckingham records for St Gregiore are really not readable. He sent me a record for Alexandre LaJeunesse, born 1839, and you can hardly read the print, even if you zoom it in.
I believe I will get in touch with the actual parish, and see if they can look up any these records.

Thanks so much,
Don

I believe I was able to access the Quintin Publications on the World Vital Records website. It was back before they, too, started charging excessive sums for "international access."

You can buy a copy here at the Quintin publications website. It looks like it only contains marriages, though. http://www.quintinpublications.com/mm5m/merchant.mvc?Screen=...=

So how do you get to the Quintin Publication parish records.
I have this publication document of the marriages at St Gregoire de Nazianze in Buckingham, Quebec from 1836 to 1975.

If you want a copy, send me your email addresses, and it is ain alphabetical order.
The Drouin Records for St. Gregoire de Nazianze on Ancestry for the years 1855 to 1863, are all screwed up, and I have reported it to Ancestry. You just have to look page by page, but I don't understand French, so I can only get some info off of it.

Don Trott

What dklart said!

I myself had better luck with the Quintin Publications parish records. They are alphabetic rather than chronologic, and contain any "extraneous" information that was included in the parish record, where Drouin does not.

There's another descendant of this couple researching the same Lajeunesse line. I've also responded to another query you posted on this board. I researched and gave you quite a bit of data, including the names of these parents.

I did more research on this line, lending a hand to the other researcher, to try and find more documentation on this couple, ie; the marriage record, and their childrens' bap records.

These are excepted from the correspondence I sent to the other person researching this couple:

"This is a more difficult and challenging search, the definition of territory of Quebec and Ontario in between 1830-50 was more fluid, and the Ontario territory records are can be spotty.

The 1861 Census for this family has a couple of important notes. Stanislas' place of birth is given as "St Jacques" (could be the village, or a parish, most likely in Quebec) and Julie Morin as "Grand River" (somewhere along the Grand River, Ontario, I suspect).

I hate to keep harping on the issue of mapping out all the locations you're finding in records, but it's an important tool to understand where to look for further documentation.

These clues can help pinpoint where to look for their marriage, which is important to verify their parentage. Other ways to help gain more info about their families, is to search the bap records for the eldest children of Stanilas Lejeunesse and Julie Morin. You may find siblings of Stanilas and Julie as godparents to their children."

==============

This was from subsequent correspondance, I wrote:

"I had some records saved from the last time I did a search.

Some children of Stanilas Lajeunesse and Julia Morin:

I think this could be Alexander's bap record. L'Orignal (St-Jean Baptiste), Ontario. http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=view&r=an&dbid=....

7 Jul 1839, the father is Antoine Lajeunesse and what looks like a Jxxxx Morin. I think the godmother could be Angelique Lajeunesse? The record is degraded, so that's a best guess.

There is also a Morin marriage directly below it. This may be for a sibling of Julie. Unfortunately these are pretty degraded.

The bap record for their child, Amable, baped 25 Aug 1851, Ottawa (basilique Notre Dame), has the godmother listed as Euphrosine Morin. She's highly likely to be a close relative of Julia, maybe a sister.

Looking at bap records for Morin children born around the same place and time period as the Lajeunesse children may also have clues. Look for Stanislas and Julie as godparents. If you see their names as godparents, chances are the male Morin parent was a sibling of Julie. That sibling will have the same parents as Julie on their marriage record. Researching other siblings, their bap and marriages, is backdoor method to finding parents, since they shared them.

I would try and track the Morin family first. Finding the Morin family will most likely lead to where the marriage of Stanilas Lajeunesse to Julie Morin took place. In the case of marriage, a record is most likely to be found by following the bride."

===================================

I can lend this advice as an experienced researcher; this is a very labor intensive search. It requires having access to the Drouin Collection (all collections) on Ancestry.com**; enabling to view the actual documents, not extracts or 3rd party transcriptions. The documents are full of little puzzle pieces and clues. Build out and research the extended family, not just the immediate.

**I'm not selling ACOM subscriptions, however if you are attempting to research this on-line, you'll need this resource. Familysearch.org (free) does have the Quebec Catholic Church records, very useful as well, they are more often more legible than the Drouin, however the db doesn't cover Ontario, which you need to conduct this search effectively.
I have this family living in the Buckingham/Bowman Quebec area about 1850 through 1880. They had several children, and I have most of the marriages of their children through this Canadien website, Our Folks Genealogy, but i can not find anything on parents of these two, and the marriage of them. Can anybody help me with this family.

Thanks,
Don

Hi sandlrottler,

(I moved your message to start a new thread on this person.)

I haven't done research on the Guillet dit Lajeunesse line, but maybe I can give you some help.

Where are you in your research and what are resources are you using?

On the thread I moved this from, I mentioned Pierre Guillet dit Lajeunesse was baptized in 1652, in Trois Rivieres, source, Drouin. Is this the person you're seeking documentation for?

Since there are several same name individuals, giving as much info as you can, what you already have documented in your line, will help sort out which one is your ancestor. Include the name of his wife and the child you descend from as well. Don't forget dates!

Found this all amusing as I have heared stories of Indian blood from my dearly missed Grandfather (Abraham Young(Lejeunesse). Nothing of a Princess - A Chief ! LOL ... what I can remember was bloodlines of: "Chief Canoe" , Potawattame , Cherokee & French -Canadian (found Metis & MiqMak & Acadian). I am wanting to prove him right & find that Chief ... BTW I am VERY PROUD to be of ALL the "mixed bloodlines" I have - incuding Norwegian, German & Bohemian
