Dear Marc,

I hav e just come accross your message board which you posted in 2000. I am just learning about message board and am an new age learner. My. g.g.g. father who was born in england and sailed to australia about 1810. and went to tasmania in 1814- where he married in 1818 and became supt. of convicts in the colony.
I am still trying to find out where and in which county he came from
the name person suggests that the name lakeland goes back to 11th centrury Ireland- related to an earl named John Lachlan. I am yet to dive into this as this family name is very widespread but goes back a very long way- if you arwe interezsted to contact me please do so on the above email address hope this brings some good news for you
regards.
Re: Your ancestory

Mr. Lakeland,

I have just been reading of a pre-roman district in Britain called Lakeland.
It was undoubtedly a Celtic precinct and may have been one of those which was able to withstand roman imperialism for some time. They built their villages upon very large rafts which were stabilized by driving vertical pilings into the lake bed. This village design may have served defensive purposes, and it was certainly essential to their identity. It is very rare to have a place-oriented surname, and it may well be that yours, and mine, survive from that time until now.

Hi Julie:

Your surnamesis so interesting. My husband is Lawrance Lakel...we have been attempting to research his grandfather and beyond. Looks like they might have come out of Maryland. Not too sure though. I just wander if Lakeland is another way of the name change. I found another spelling Leochel...

What do you think??
