Benjamin Harrison Lakes

My husband's grandmother was Rubina Lakes Miller. She married Alfred Lee Moss. Her father was Benjamin Harrison Lakes (1841 - 1932). He married a Cherokee woman named Emma Tell Long (1856-1924). The father of B.H. Lakes was Benjamin Garland Lakes (b. 1816 in VA). The following information has not been verified: The father of B.G Lakes was William Lakes (1768 - 1853). His father was William Lakes (1730-1783). His father was William Lax (1705-1775). All of these men lived in the western section of Virginia. There was a William Lax who was born in 1675 in Nottinghamshire, England who immigrated to Goochland, VA and died there in 1740. If any of this connects to your family, please let me know.

I do not have much information about his children and granchildren but do have information about his parents and grandparents if he is the same Fred Lakes. I have him with brothers named James (Jim) Lou and George Matt (as well as several other siblings). I have a photo of these three and another brother, Jerry (Thomas Jeremiah) together. They are sons of Jacob Lakes and Eliza Ann Johnson.

I believe the Paul Lakes that you say is your birth father is the same Paul Lakes that is my great uncle. One bit of information from your posting does not match my information but all the other details are identical. The one difference I show in my records is that Paul Lakes was born in 1916 not 1915.

The list of siblings you provided is identical to the names of my uncles brothers and sisters so I am certain it is the same Paul Lakes.

One other bit of information I have is a list of his children's names that were listed in his obituary. It lists him as having a wife, Edith; 3 daughters: Agnes Perry of Richmond Indiana, Audrey Abbot of Flint Michigan and Patricia still at home.
Also 2 sons Harold of Elkhart and Paul Jr. of Richmond.

All his brothers and sisters are listed as survivors except for Chester who died in 1967.

He was born in Kentucky and spent a number of years in California and was living in the Richmond Indiana area when he died. He is buried at Goshen Cemetery in Richmond along with his parents, Jakie and Fama.

I have no idea of the whereabouts of his children except that his youngest daughter (at least of the ones I know), Patricia is living in the Winchester Indiana area.

I have heard that Audrey lived in Tennessee for a time but I am not sure of her whereabouts now.

I hope this information is helpful. Good luck in finding your half sisters!

I'm glad you got the message I posted. After it was posted I noticed the date on your post was over a year old and was afraid you may not even be checking the message boards anymore. I am sorry to say that at this moment I can't remember Patricia's last name. I do have a couple of sources that may have the information and will check with them as soon as possible and let you know what I find out.

If you are interested I do have a couple of photos of Paul and some of his kids. The photos are old but I thought you might like to have them. I also have a copy of his obituary. I could e-mail them to you if you want. If you want them either post your e-mail address here or send me an e-mail at clashell@insightbb.com

Good luck with your search!

Lakes family

Talk about coincidences...I have a brother named David. I just started in this search and have gotten side-tracked several times, but am back at it now. I recently took my uncle to Jackson County Ky. Everywhere I have ever lived, there were usually no "Lakes's". Well, after telling people in Jackson County what I was doing, one man said, "Well, if you're looking for Lakes's, you're in the right place. If you get the Lakes' vote in this county, you can win any election. Anyway, my family came from the Carter Lakes "clan" and their gravesite is on Lakes Creek Road, near Wind Cave (a "spot", rather than a town). There is a b&b in an log log home built by Elihu Lakes, and the cemetery is behind there. There is also a large Lakes' cemetery at the end of Lakes' Creek Road. My great-grandfather, Lewis Lakes brought his family to Hamilton, Ohio. He was married to Cynthia Isaacs Lakes. His son, William was my grandfather. William married Retha Reed. My father's name is Harold. If this connects in any way, let me know.

I have only begun my search, but it looks like I am also a desendant of John Lakes (don't know about the "P"). My great grandfather was named Lewis, a son of John. They are from the Carter Lakes group in Jackson County. There is a Carter Lakes' cemetery behind the Elihu Lakes log home (b&b) on Lakes Creek Road that I haven't visited, but plan to. John was a son of Carter (I think). Lewis left Jackson County and moved to Hamilton Ohio. His son William was my grandfather. Lewis was married to Cynthia Isaacs. I have more if you think this is the "right" John. My e-mail address is jlakes@neo.rr.com

lax (lakes)

From Cindy's Lists, Swiss Link, there is a map of Switzerland showing an area in the north called "Laxx". Quick summary: Laxx was a part of the sovereignty of the District of Ilanz (Romansh:Glion). The name Ilanz/Glion goes back to the Celtic it-landa=granery, and is therefore characteristic for the fertile basin of the vally. In the late Middle Ages the old Dutchy split up into a number of small sovereign districts, which by teh 14th century had all been taken by the Barons of Belmont and united with these large possessions against the Dukes of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg in 1352. An exception in the development described was made by the commune of the "Free Men of Laxx, who went their own way. Now I know this is the true origin of the Lakes's :-).

I have just read your post and find it very interesting. My mothers; maiden name was Harrison. Her dad, Green Franklin Harrison was from Jackson County Ky. In the late 1940's my family moved to Jennings County Indiana. Also in the early 50's my grandfathers step mother, along with most of her sons and daughters moved to Connersville Indiana. I know from doing research that the Harrisons, Isaacs, Lakes, and Gabbards are all interrelated. Interesting enough, only recently have I made contact with that part of the Harrison family after many years of no communication at all.

Jim West
west_way@juno.com
