Hi there,

I am trying to trace Irish family on my mother's side.

My mothers grand parents were Thomas Molloy & Sarah Molloy. They had 6 children - Winnie, Maureen, Cecelia(Ann), Norah (Doreen), Michael, John. We know they lived in Tuam in Ireland and the mother Sarah Lally died of influenza at the age of 35. Other than that the information is non existent.

Any information or links that people have would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Unfortunately the siblings did not speak of their parents very much which makes dates very hard. We're trying to find out about these two before they were married but have hit a brick wall, so to speak.
Thank you for the census idea. I shall go there :)

Hard to help much without any dates. For births and marriages before 1864, you need church records. Later births, marriages, and deaths can be found in civil records, the indexes to which are on familysearch.com. If they were still in Ireland in 1901, they should be in the on-line census.

Diane

Robert,
Our names/dates don't seem to be in sync, but since you mention County Mayo, I thought I'd pass this along. My Lally relatives are from Mayo, I believe Ballintober area. My grandfather was Matthew Lally (born 1886) He had at least 8 siblings, one being Anthony; they both emigrated to Queens NY. I don't know if any of the other siblings came over. Their parents were Patrick Lally and Ellen Duffy, born in 1850's - 1860's.
Maryanne S.

My grandfather, Matthew Lally (born 1886) emigrated from County Mayo to Queens NY(not sure of the year.) One of his many siblings was named Patrick. Other than his brother Anthony, I'm not sure who else emigrated to U.S., but probably several siblings. His dad was also Patrick Lally, married to Ellen Duffy. I believe they lived in Ballintober.
If you think there's any connection, please be in touch.
Maryanne

Mary A. b. 1906, Winifred b. 1907, Margaret (Peg) b. 1910 and Colman b. 1924 to Michael Lally and Mary Curley of Castletown, Gort, Co. Galway. Parish of Kiltartan. They emigrated to New York in 1925, 1926, 1928 and 1948 respectively. As a native of Kiltartan I would like to get in contact with their descendants/relatives to share information. delourdesfahy@gmail.com

There are Devlin townlands in Tagheen and Kilgeever civil parishes. Griffith's shows a John Lally in Tagheen, but no Lallys in Kilgeever. Tagheen is part of Robeen Catholic parish, but the records there don't start until 1857, too late for Mary's baptism. Still, you might check the LDS film for Lally marriages, which might include parents' names.

Diane

Researching Mary Lally, born about 1832 in Ireland, possibly County Mayo. Her father was Peter Lally, a schoolmaster in Devlin, County Mayo from 1835-1839. Mary left Ireland after her father died during the famine and went to England. She married James Foulkes in 1860 in Lancashire, England. She may have had a brother who served in the military and perhaps another sibbling. She left England for Boston in 1892.

Hi Erica,

Since I posted that info, I've found that the Lallys came out to California. It looks like John Lally may have come out too, as I recently found a John Lally with the right age and birthplace with his dad, Martin, on Calif. voting records just prior to 1900. I don't know where he ended up or where he died. My John was born in Leesburg, Ky in 1868. I don't know of a Nebraska connection but anything is possible, I've found. Don't know if this helps; let me know if you have any more questions. Best of luck!

My grandfather's biological father was named John Lally, but as far as I know we don't have any connection to Kentucky. All I know about John Lally was that he worked on the railroads in Nebraska when he died from the flu epidemic around 1918. My grandfather was 2 months old. Could this possibly be one of your great grandmother's younger siblings? I'm having a heck of a time finding any info on him.

This is several years later because today I found his name plate from his Ivac lab door. I had taken it after he exited Ivac. Brian used to go next door to our shop and sit with me at my computer and surf the net. Brian was an adventurer and we'd lay out his trips on Terraserver. Brian always wanted me to join him on some of his desert trips and I'm saddened that I never did that. I'm sure I would have heard some very interesting stories from him. As it was I was enrichened by his stories at work. When I go into the areas that he taked about I always am reminded about him. I feel priveliged to have him pick me to share his life's experiences with.
Brian.. thank you.

I am looking for any info about Thomas Lally, his wife Sarah (Ellen?) Finnery Lally, and their children. Thomas and Sarah immigrated to the US in 1844 with three children, only their eldest daughter, Bridget Lally Curley survived the trip. They entered the US at New York after arriving in St. Johns, New Brunswick, Canada. A son, Michael, was born in New York (town unknown), 1845, and proceeded to Kent Co. Michigan arriving by 1847.

I found the registration of the births of Thomas, Oct.-Dec. 1944, vol. 4, p. 152, and Gabriel, Oct.-Dec. 1956, vol. 4, p. 187, both in Galway Registration District, which includes west Athenry parish. You could get the registrations from the GRO (groireland.ie) for 4 euros each and learn where they lived. Unfortunately, I can't find a registration of the marriage of John and Mary in the 1930s or 1940s.

Diane

Bob, I would like to stay connected as I'm fascinated by the Lally ancestry. Have you seen the book written in 1941 about the Lally and Mulally clan by Dennis Mulally?

My dad's name was William Emmett Lally and my grandfather was William James Lally. Many William's, John's James, Thomases and Michael's in my Lally tree.

I just finished an assignment working for an Irish start up software company and whenever I called over to Dublin they would tell me I had a fine Irish name.

I have a cousin in LA but haven't been in touch for awhile.
I know there were a fair number of Lallys in the Tuam area at the time, but perhaps we should keep track of each other as it wouldn't surprise me if some of them were related. My GGrandfather, William Joseph Lally, was born in that area circa 1821 and emigrated to Rhode Island in the US around 1848. It was the time of the famine, and it wasn't uncommon for several members of the same family to leave home at that time.

Slainte,

Bob Lally
Santa Barbara, California

They would have been born in Ireland about 1818 /1820. So the possible link to your family would be James and Anne Lally - the senior Anne - the mother. But I feel now that Your James and Anne are not the same people as the James and Anne I'm looking for,
Regards
Stephen

Then click on each parish to learn when the records begin and where they can be found.

Diane

Stephen

Which Annie is a Brett?

My James and Anne Lally are living in Manchester with either James or Anne's sister Mary Whitaker formerly Carsin/Carson/Carrin/Carren/Curren and her husband Joseph Whitaker. There is no Joseph + Mary pairing in 1841 and I have not found a marriage entry between 1841-1851.

My interest is that James and Anne's son Francis (Frank) is my greatgreatgrandfather.

Cheers

Lynne Simpson
Canberra

Lynne
Many thanks for your reply. At least it enables me to cross this family off my list of investigations.
I've only just discovered the names of James & Annie so am in the thick of research into their background. Getting nowhere in Ireland so beginning to think I should just be happy with the information I've got.
Annie's maiden name was Brett.
Best wishes
Stephen Lally
England

Hi Stephen
Thanks for your reply. In my original query I said that Bessy/Elizabeth Lally, the daughter of James and Anne Lally, married James Beattie in 1864 in All Souls church in Manchester. In the 1871 Census Elizabeth Beattie says she was born in Co Mayo.

I did go onto the Co Mayo list and ask about Lally people. Apparently the largest congregation of Lally is on the Mayo Gallway border.

My James Lally was Protestant and not Catholic. I have tried that avenue also with no success. It is interesting that James went from schoolmaster to hatter!

Cheers

Lynne Simpson
Canberra Australia

I have also investigated this family.
I have a James Lally, born 13.11.1818 in Loughrea, Co.Galway and in London in 1851 census. His parents were James Lally and 'Annie'. This family is the only one I can find with the correct names (James & Annie) but I can find no link to my tree.
So I reply only to see if you can see any link. Sorry I have no additional information.
How do you know this famuily was born in Co. Mayo?
Regards
Stephen

This is fascinating information. Where exactly is it located? Is there by any chance a similar record for a census in 1831? I have been twice to the National Archive in Dublin and not found this before.

Thanks for any help.

Bob Lally
boblally@cox.net
