Hi Gillian, I stumbled upon this site while looking for family tree information. Dorothy Pollard was my aunt, her mother Sarah was my great grandmother and used to live with us in Winnipeg for a short while. Her daughter Mary Attrill was my grandmother.

Here is a very big lead ......

When he married, Peter Lamont was calling himself Patrick McGillivie which is why he is not obvious when you use the IGI database. McGillivie is a Lamont sept.

Blair Atholl OPR marriages for 8th November 1803.
Patrick McGillivie in Over Bohespic and Ann Gow in Blairfetty

Now you may think that this is just a coincidence but the next entry is:

'William McGillivie in Over Bohespic and Helen Low parish of Logierait (14th November 1803)', which also appears in the Logierait OPR on 9th November 1803 as 'William Lamond and Helen Low'

By the way the IGI database reads as 'McGillavie'

Throth (www.borenich.co.uk)

P.S. We are interested in the emigration history of William (b1824) as another Lamont family from the area emigrated on the 'Buckinghamshire' to Adelaide.

If he was a McKlean maybe affiliated with Allen's mother Mary McKlean in some way ?? I'm hoping I'm not confussing you too much.

Diana,

I don't know how Mary Roebuk fits in because Alan was married to Jane MacLean and jane's mother was Hannah Roebuk, so maybe Alan came out with his mother-in-law?

Not sure whether I have mentioned this before or not, but there is a good site from which to access some further information on Google called 'Mull Isle Geneaology' , cheers Peter

Hi Peter, I have information that there were several children who went to Australia with Allen and Mary Robuck from Mull. It says the boys were frail and hungry and the girls were strong and healthy. I would have to look up where I have it listed. This was from the ships records I believe.
I`m sure the book will talk about Allen and his family. I wonder where John and Mary Lamont were laid to rest.

Hi Peter,I found the song on line and liked it a lot. I had never heard of it before. The only way I can think of to get just the song is burn it onto a disc from the site and I don't know if that is possible. somehow it must go to your computer then you could copy it I think ??? I also looked all over for just that song to download and so far no luck.
I am impressed that the singer is from Canada. I got busy so haven't gone any further with it yet. I copied the words and a picture to add to my files though. I am also receiving the book you spoke of from the Fishers, I am so excited!! Thank you for sending them my email. It has a chapter on my line that he forwarded in a PDF file. The book must be quite extensive. Could you tell me if the Lamont`s you know are dark haired?? My dad had thick almost black hair. I was wondering if they are fair haired or dark as my dads father was fair and he was Dutch German. Just wondering where the dark thick hair came from. Perhaps the Lamont`s. Thanks again for your awesome help. This has been my best connection in about 10 years.

It sure would be nice to see what the Lamont Clan looks like. My dad had almost black hair and very thick. I believe my grandmother Lamont had black thick hair too. She died of stomach cancer and a good amount of my dads family did too. Perhaps there's a link. She was in her 90's I think. Anyway thank again from Diana

No I haven't heard anything either. The grand daughter emailed me and said you alerted her of me and I responded asking her to help me get the book, but nothing yet.I'm going to Google the song and see if I can hear it. I knew nothing of it either but if I hear it I will most likely want it too. If I locate it I will let you know. It may be on an album with other songs from the same singer. I'll try to keep you posted. 2 heads are sometimes better than 1. Take Care from Diana PS..she could be trying to locate some copies for US ??

Hi Diana,
I haven't heard anything about the book yet - have you?

Did you know there is a song called "Isobel's Song" (or 'song for Isobel..not sure) by Kellie Trotier and its about The Lamont masacre by The Campbells. (Kellie is a Canadian singer) and I have been tryng to track down the CD of the song to no avail! I searched for it via Google 'Lamont DNA' and discovered it. A beautiful ballad and would love to buy it - do you know of it?
Cheers,
Peter

Hi there, it is amazing that you live in BC!! I have been wondering if you have any copies of the book? My ggg grandmother was Sarah Lamont. I sure would like to know more about the family. They mostly lived in Ontario. Could you help me get that book ?, I am so excited to know that I finally found you. What line is your grandmother from? Anyway please let me know. I live in Maple Ridge and you can contact me at dbriere@shaw.ca Thanks so very much. I have been looking for a picture of Sarah and I know of 1 person who has a photo of Sarah and her husband Joseph Schell but I have lost contact with her so don't think I will ever know what they looked like. I guess you and I would be cousins. Well thanks again for your message and hope to hear from you soon. Diana

Hi - I have read some further information from Emma Clare Fisher and her grandmother has written a book of the history of the Lamont family of Mull Isle.. Are you familiar with it? I have written to her to ask where I could source this book. I have contacted her via Message Board, but is does not look like she uses it all that regularly.. so I will have to be patient! :)

Hi,This is my family. I am the 4th great granddaughter of Duncan Lamont who was a brother to to Allen who went to Australia. Duncan and wife Mary McArther went to Canada and he died en route in Quebec Canada on the ship, I believe. Mary settled in Ontario with the children. Her daughter Sarah who was born on Mull in 1812 was my 3rd great grandmother. She married Joseph Schell. I am still looking to find John Lamont ans Mary Mclean who were their parents.
They were born in the 1750's or so.Someone must have a burial place for them. I sure would like to find out where it is. I must thank you for listing this information about John born in 1859. I think his father Allen must have been the last to leave the isle of Mull perhaps after his parents died??? I read that family members tended to stay put as long as thier parents needed them. Well if you find out anything more or just want to talk please contact me. Thanks for your message.
Re: Samuel Lamont

From "Ogle County" a portrait and biographical album published in 1886 by the Chapman Brothers.

Beginning on pg. 229 . . .

"Samuel Lamont, farmer and stockman. Ogle County is represented by a large class of well-to-do farmers who have acquired their property through their own exertions and who were not the recipients of any legacy, and among this number is the subject of this notice. He is not what we could call a pioneer of the county, but came here from New York in 1861, and located in Lynnville Township. Some seven years later he purchased 160 acres of land on section 23 of the township in which he was residing. By dint of honest toil, economy and energetic effort, he has added to his original purchase until, at present, he is the proprietor of a fine farm comprising 480 acres of land. On his place he has erected good and substantial buildings, and, in his chosen vocation, is meeting with that success which energy and perseverance are sure to bring. He is making a specialty of Clydesdale horses and Short-horn cattle. He has a full-blooded imported stallion, Bonnie Hawthorne, and a number of high grades. He has a pair of full-blooded Short-horns, and keeps usually about 100 head of fine graded cattle and 20 horses.

Mr Lamont was born under the pines of his native Scotland, Oct. 15, 1824. Here he was reared and received his eduation, and lived until he was 22 years of age. At that time he joined the great army of emigrants from the Old World, on their westward journey to seek homes in the prosperous and free country of the Stars and Stripes. They landed at the port of New York, and for a time lived in the State, but soon learning of the fertile prairies of Illionis, he pushed still further toward the setting sun, and being attracted by the splendid advantages offered here, stopped and made a settlement. Since then he has been engaged mostly in agricultural pursuits, enjoying more than ordinary success.

Before leaving his native shores, Mr. Lamont had won the heart and hand of Miss Agness McLymont, who was born in Scotland in 1826. Their marriage occurred in 1846, during the year they bid adieu to the homes of their childhood. To them have been born 12 children, three of whom they buried during their infancy. Those living are William, John, Samuel Jr., Mary, Agnes, James, Robert, Frederick and Isabella. Samuel Jr. married Elizabeth Bump and is a farmer in this township; Agnes is the wife of Robert Ferguson, also a farmer of this township; the others are at home. William, when 16 years old, ran away from home to enlist in Co. B, 4th Ill. Vol. Cav., Feb. 3, 1864, and was discharged as a Corporal May 28, 1866.

For many years Mr. Lamont has had his political attachments with the Republican party, and his career has been one of almost continuous success."

(This family is not related to me.)

Thanks !

I spoke with Jane Beley a few days ago. She's the widow of Rose's son, Armand, Jr. She didn't know much and said her kids didn't care !

I did find out that Armand, Jr was their only child.

My research was to go the other direction: Georges Frederick Beley ( I have pictures of him) deserted my sister-in-law's great grandmother and their kids, came to the U S, married another French lady ( Marie something), then , as best we can tell, deserted her and her son. We don't know what evetually happened to him, which is what I had hoped to learn.

Gene

Thank you, Gene, for your reply. Since I posted my original query, I found her birthdate of Oct 1895 listed in the 1900 census for New York City. Her obituary posted in the April 20, 1944 New York Times, says she died on "April 18, 1944, in her 50th year." I would be happy to share my information on the Beley family with you.

I am doing a little research on the Beley family and ran across your post on Rose Lamont.

She was born c. 1897 in New York based on Census records.

Gene Maresca

Re: LAMONT, CAMPBELL of Argyll Scotland

The Campbell and Lamont (pronounced Lamb-it) clans had a rocky history; particularly in the 1600s; there was a massacre of Lamonts by the Campbells that almost wiped out the Lamonts in 1646. Once I was able to back track that far I found a wealth of information as much of this massacre and it's aftermath were carefully recorded. Archibald Campbell, who ruled Scotland for a brief period was eventually beheaded for his treachery against the Lamonts. Many of the Lamonts who survived the massacre fled to Ireland and England, and even changed their names to avoid being hunted down. (This happened to my own ancestors.) http://www.lamont-young.com/lamont/showhistory.php?docID=17
