My Grandfather, Dick Dickens (Richard)Lewis and Edith(Edy, Edythe) Collens LaMotte lived together from about 1940 until their deaths. Edy's husband was Walter LaMotte with whom they had 4 children, Waltena, Earltine, Bawerd, and a child that died as an infant.

I can not find a divorce between Dick and Mable Lewis nor can I find a marriage between Dick and Edy. He left two boys and she left her three children so that they could be together. Dick and Edy lived in Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Maryland.

I am interested in filling the massive holes ---
thank you for all your help.

He was born February 20, 1925 in Grayling, Crawford, Michigan and died August 3, 1991 in Keysville, Charlotte Virginia. I believe that his wife is Judy F. Ostober 4, 938 - August 26, 1994 Keysville Charlotte, Virginia. His sisters would have been Waltena and Earltine. It appeasr that there was a fourth child - Michigan, Deaths and Burials Index, 1867-1995 - death March 11, 1926 in Grayling. He is listed in the 1930 census as Bawerd Collon with grandparents George and Lura Collon - note spelling of last name. Should be Collen.

Glenn,

I just saw you message board post and thought I'd respond. Toussaint Benoist dit Seraphim is my wife's 3rd great grandfather. Born in Canada in 1788 he made his way south to the St Louis area. I show him marrying Marie Louise Martineau (15 Jul 1836 in St Charles, MO). He died 13 Dec 1845 in Florissant, MO and is buried in St Ferdinand Cemetery, Florissant, MO. If this is the person you are seeking let me know. jamesrf@centurytel.net

Lamotte origins

my apologies for not thinking to post this earlier. Hopefully others will find it interesting and for those lucky few, it will help break down the brick walls.

I also have a little more on the English branch of this family, sourced years ago from Daphne Schober whose email address must have changed since 2004.

Regards Judy (who is not related at all and who has has not recorded the source of this wonderful information which I re-typed to appease my own curiousity)

THE LAGIER LAMOTTES IN ENGLAND

The two surviving sons of Claude and Marie Lagier both left Switzerland and took up residence in England. Daniel, the eldest, had lived in Amsterdam (1736) but in 1742 he became a British citizen and died unmarried in 1770, being then of the Liberty of Norton Folgate. He left his worldly possession so ‘his brother Jean, only next of kin’.

Jean was ten years younger than Daniel. He became a British subject in 1723 at the age of 25. The Bill received royal assent on 17th May 1733 (see appendix). In November 1757 he was admitted to the Freedom of the City of London. Upon their arrival in England the two brothers called themselves Lagier LaMotte which then became Lagier Lamotte.

Jean married Louise D’Albiac (or Dalbiac) on 6th February, 1734 in the French Church of St. Martin’s Orgars. Louise D’Albiac had been baptized on 30th March, 1712 at the Eglise de L’Artillerie, Spitalfields. (publications of the Huguenot Society of London, Volume XXXVII). The D’Albiacs are a noble Huguenot family from Nimes and the ancestors of Louise d’Albiac were almost exterminated at the time of the Revocation of the Edict on Nantes. The father, mother, four sons and three daughters were murdered. Two sons escaped death; one abjured Protestantism to save the family estate, the other smuggled two sons out of the country in hampers and sent them to England. They arrived safely and in due course founded two families. Louise was the granddaughter of one of them. Much later another lineal descendant became the Duchess of Roxburghe in 1836. The D’Albiacs still exist in England today. (Picture in Floors Castle Nth Kelso)

The original marriage document of Jean Lagier Lamotte and Louise D’Albiac is kept in the Huguenot Library, London. Also filed there are the birth certificates of their twelve children between the years 1736-49, including their names and godparents as well as the death certificates of five of their children. All these documents are in French.

Upon his arrival in London Jean Lagier Lamotte will have found a thriving Huguenot community. Of the half million French subjects who were driven into exile by the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes more than 120,000 are believed to have taken refuge in England. The refugees were of all ranks and conditions – landed gentry, clergymen, soldiers, professional men, merchants and artisans. The greater number were Calvinists.

17

LAMOTTE FAMILY RECORDS

The Huguenot Library in London has the following records relating to the Lamotte family:

Records relating to the family of LAGIER LAMOTTE, originally of LaMotte Chalauncon in Dauphine: on parchment and paper sheets bound into a foolscap volume (marbled cloth, half calf).

CLAUDE LAGIER (son of Antoine) called La Motte, was admitted as a Citizen of Geneva ) see below) on 11 December 1694. (e. Arnaud, Histoire des Protestants du Dauphine III, p,. 360) The entries in the manuscript book relate to him, his son JEAN, or JOHN LAGIER LAMOTTE, naturalized in England 1723, and his grandson of the same name. The latter’s daughter MARY LA MOTTE married in 1795 CHARLES ABBOTT, who became Lord Chief Justice and was in 1827 created the first Baron TENTERDEN. The records were evidently inherited by his grandson, the third Lord Tenterden (1834-82), who was permanent Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs. They were acquired later by
I.I. Howard, Maltravers Herald, whose name is on the flyleaf.

The volume contains:

1.	“Bourgeoisie’ (Patent of Citizenship) of Geneva, granted to CLAUDE LAGIER “dit de la Motte’, 11 December, 1694. (Original document, mounted on a parchment page)

2.	Entries by JOHN LAGIER LAMOTTE, senior, recording his marriage in London to LOUISE, daughter of Captain JAMES d’ALBIAC, in February 1734, the birth of his 12 Children, 1736-49 (with names of godparents), and the death of five; also the marriage in 1756 of his eldest daughter LOUISE to BENJAMIN FRANCOIS HOUSSEMAYNE DUBOULAY (Minister of the Threadneedle Street French Church from 1761, died 1765) and particulars of their five children. Another hand, doubtless his sons, has added notes on the deaths of JOHN LAMOTTE senior and his wife (both 1792) and of their daughter CATHERINE (1797).

3.	A note dated 6 July 1879, signed ‘T’ apparently CHARLES STUART AUBREY, 3rd LORD TENTERDEN, on the La Motte family and his descent from it. (see Add. P.29).
Their brother George Grimshaw had gone to Emmanuel College Cambridge, received his B.A in 1837 and his M.A.N in 1841. He was unmarried and a Curate of Coxley Wells, between 1858-63. According to the genealogist Henry Wagner he supported the family of his brother John.

John, was the ‘unfortunate solicitor’ according to James Houssemayne du Boulay. In a letter to Henry Wagner (the genealogist) he wrote on 4th July, 1907:’…John Lagier Lamotte who married Mary King was a solicitor, ruined by his wife’s extravagance. He was obliged to live abroad and I believe his brother George supported him. The family were in great straits…” He lived at Brighton but died in Cherbourg.

The following was copied from a statement in the possession of John Lagier Lamotte of 51 Brunswich Square, Brighton on the 25th December 1865 by L.W. Lamotte:

“The Lamottes are descended from a French family, who possessed estates in the Dauphine (France) and are said to be connected with the Ducal family of Monteleone” (Not Monteleone but Montillon, Ed.)

They took refuge in 1685 in Switzerland and there are traditions in the family which illustrate the haste and danger of their flight. They appear to have settled at Berne (it was Geneva, Ed.) from whence apparently Jean Lagier Lamotte removed to London early in the 18th Centrury. Born in 1708, he married Louise, daughter of James D’Albiac, also a French refugee family and lived at Wanstead, certainly until 1785 in which year he and his wife celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding day. The play on the occasion was acted by members of the family (written by a Du Boulay) and is in the possession of Miss Lamotte, Maidenhead.

The Lamottes do not profess to have any connection with the family of de la Motte.

Mr. Jean Lagier Lamotte is mentioned in the Register of the French Church, Threadneedle Street as an Elder of the Church in 1753 when his son in law, the Reverend B.F.H. du Boulay was Minister.

There are some interesting Family seals in his possession surmounted by a foreign coronet but many other relics of their French origin have been lost within the memory of surviving members of the family.

L.W. Lamotte of Sydenham
And 8 (illegible)

42

H/F JEAN (John) LAGIER LAMOTTE

Bapt 14th March, 1708 at the Eglise Madeleine in Geneva

d	26th September, 1792 in Wanstead, Essex (NOW east London)
(See photographs)

Last Will dated 20th March, 1790 and proved 5th October, 1792

Married

17th February, 1735 in the French Church of St. Martin’s Lane, London
Louise D’Albiac (Dalbiac), daughter of Captain James D’Albiac and his wife Louise Delaporte (de la Porte); granddaughter of Scipion D’Albiac of Nimes.

B 1711

D 8th February, 1792 and buried 15th February, 1792 in Wanstead Essex, now East London).
Born 27 May 1808, Fays Billot, France;Died 28 Nov. 1888 at Billotte Settlemennt near Frenchville,Pa. She is buried in St. Mary's cemetery in Frenchville along with her husband, Laurant Billotte. Married Nov. 1830 in Centry,Haute Saone , France.Entered the Country 1847 aboard steamship May Flower at New York,New York along with 8 other family members. Some records refer to her as Sophie Catherine or Sophie. My great-grandfather Justin L. Billotte was her son and a passenger. He was only 11 yrs. old. They did not arrive in Clearfield County until 1851. Other children were Jeanne(Jane) Augustine Geneviieve; Claude Pierre; Celestin(Corin); Victor Desire; Lewis Laurant;and Marie Anne( Mary A.)Onassie Billotte who maynot have been born to Catherine but rather to Marie Voinsett who was Laurant's first wife and who is buried at Courhaton(sp),France where she could have died as result of giving birth to Mary A. Catherine's father was Neuville de la Pont LaMotte. She had many siblings. Laurant was a "Ranger"in Malvilers which means he was a combination Game Warden and a Forestry Ranger combination. These skills would have done him well in the backwoods of Clearfield and Centre Counties and Clinton as wild game was in adbundance and still is today. The Billotte

LAMOTTE, Michael, b 1827, Vermont, USA

I am trying to find the birthplace of my gggrandfather, Michael LAMONT. Some recent info suggests his name may have been LAMOTHE/LAMOTTE. He was born in VT in April,1827, but married in 1854 in Illinois under the name NORMANDIN. He may have once been NORMANDIN dit LAMOTHE. I see a group of MOTTs in the 1830 census in Alburg. Were these possibly LAMOTTEs? Is there perhaps any record of births for these years? I have a theory that Michael was orphaned in the 1830's and raised by Louis NORMANDIN in Boucherville, Chambly Co., Quebec. Is there any record of LAMOTTE deaths in the 1830's of parents with surviving kids? Please forward any info or suggestions that anyone may have.
Lamont

John,

If you haven't found more information on your father - I know your post was quite some time ago; John Elton LaMotte is related to my grandfather. If you have yet to find additional information, let me know as my uncle David La Motte has gathered all of our family tree history. Also, I know in the original note for John Elton, that Richard LaMotte was mentioned. He is my distant cousin as I suspect you are as well. We have contact information for him if you need that too.

Thanks,

Leslie La Motte
