Have you researched Lancashires from before about 1750?

Hello Lancashire Researchers!

I am looking for any genealogists who've researched Lancasters or Lancashires (the two surnames were once equivalent) successfully going back to times before about 1750.

What I would like to call for are written descriptions of this work, with some mention of the evidence, the conclusions, the possibilities, and what further research might be undertaken. These can be short or long.

My aim is to work with others to add to the collection of such stories which I have myself been building up on my Lancaster webpage: http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Lancaster%20Index.html

I'd be helping people publish on to the internet, for the greater good of all Lancaster genealogy.

Why do I think that this sort of work is so critical?

Because before 1750 or so is where most of us get stuck even when we do know all the available resources fairly well.

Consider what this idea is NOT...

1. Forums like this one, are excellent places for swapping ideas about how to trace a family in the 1800s for example, and there are many resources on the internet. So genealogists from many families are working away well on this all the time. If you are stuck in the late 1700s or after that time, post a clear question on this message board!

...But eventually most of us, including me personally, get stuck in the 1700s, because this is a time when English speaking populations were already growing and moving very fast, but good records had NOT yet become reliable all around the English speaking world.

We want to be able to jump back to the earlier times when populations were small and stayed in the same parishes for a long time, but it is very difficult.

...and it is precisely at that point that we begin to search around to see what earlier families we MIGHT be related to, and who has written about them.

2. While I have nothing against some of the family trees posted around the internet, many of them are copied from each other for the early parts of their trees, and the guesses in them are often no longer known to be guesses. Indeed, even many pre-internet publications suffer from the same problem.

(All family tree work needs guessing. I am not against guessing when people say that they are guessing, or that their source was guessing.)

The hypothetical genealogist I described above, who has worked hard to get back to the 1700s and now looks around the internet for good material to work with, unfortunately spends a lot of time on false leads because of this.

What I am looking for are people who can explain the sources of proof for the family trees of Lancasters this far back.

Is there anybody out there interested in participating in this effort?

My normal e-mail address is andrew.lancaster@skynet.be

Best Regards
Andrew Lancaster

Richard & Rachael LANCASHIRE, early 1800s, Lancashire county, England

On the assumption that my LARCASHIRE/LIRCASHIRE ancestor could be a mistranscription of LANCASHIRE, I would like to know if anyone is familiar with Richard and Rachael (BRADFORD) LANCASHIRE?

They had a daughter named Charlotte who was born about 1813 in Lancashire co. She married James HARRISON, born about 1811. Charlotte & James, with children Thomas, Ellen, Sarah and Nancy, left for the US in 1850 from Liverpool.

I believe they are in the 1841 census for Bede St., St. Martin, Liverpool, Lancashire.

Thanks.
Jo

Time to get started with DNA study of the Lancashire surname

Update from the Lancaster/Lancashire etc DNA project.

We do not yet have any Lancashires as such but we now have results for a very large Lancaster family who descend from one Robert Lancaster or Lancashire (Lanquishear) who was in Virginia in the 1600s. It seems he may be connected to the Lancashire family from the London region.

It would be fascinating if we could now finally have some Lancashire participation in this project. It is certain that Lancashire and Lancaster have occasionally been used by the same people, and so there should be fascinating connections and disconnections between the two surnames.

Best Regards
Andrew Lancaster
The project: http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Lancaster.htm

Hi Dawn
I have a Charles, son of Horatio N. but I dont have an exact date on him, as its not my direct line. His brother was born in Tamworth abt. 1830's. There seems not to be a link but names are following in the family so it may be worth looking further back to get a tie-in. I am back to 1752 on my direct Lancashire line so feel free to get in touch when you get further back to see if we can link up.
All the best in your quest
Tricia

Hi there,
My husband's g-g-grandmother was Eliza Winstanley Lancashire. Her father was Robert Lancashire born 1822 in Manchester, but I also have a birth place of Tamworth...not to sure which is correct. Robert is the son of Charles Lancashire (1801 Manchester) and Mary. Does any of this fit in with your family information?
Regards,
Dawn

Antonia,
I have a Robert Lancashire in my tree. He was born in Manchester in 1823. He married Sarah Winstanley Oct 11, 1847 and they had William Charles (1850), Lavina Alice (1855), Eliza Winstanley (1858) and Amelia Ann (1861). Robert died in the fall of 1870 in Manchester.
What I have found after some extensive searching is that the last name Lancashire was sometimes refered to as Lancaster. On two of the english census, my Lancashire family is referred to as Lancaster. So you can see how it can get confusing.
Good luck with your searching.
Dawn
Canada

Re: Lancashires from Manchester

Having read your Genuki Pages, you'll now that Manchester is a large city that was in the County of Lancashire.

It has had control of it's own destiny since about 1890. although it remained in Lancashire till 1974.

When one refers to the County of Lancaster or Lancashire they are practically interchangeable for the vast majority of purposes

The surname Lancaster is not a particularly popular one in this area, there are just 15 entries in the Manchester North phone book and in the 1901 census there were 64 entries for Lancasters living in Manchester. That would be about 12 families.

Saying that though your posting is not really specific

What exactly are you seeking ? Is it a particular family or an origin of the name ? As a local I'd be happy to give you a bit more help with the area if you were to contact me.

But if it is not the area, but a family you need help with, then if you were to be a bit more specific, then perhaps you would get a little more guidance.

Good Luck

Certificate Man
antonylambert@certificates.fsnet.co.uk

I am the adminstrator (a volunteer by the way) of the Lancaster DNA surname project.

As it seems Lancashire and Lancaster may have sometimes been interchangeable names, and there is not a Lancashire DNA project, I have set the project up with the lab we work with so that Lancashires may join the project.
