Lancaster from Jefferson City, Jefferson, TN

I would like to contact anyone who has Lancaster ancestors who lived in Jefferson City, TN. My ultimate goal is to contact a descendent of that family. My great-aunt married Clarence (Penny) Lancaster b. 1894. He died in 1973 in Jefferson City. I am told that he was from that area, though he married my great-aunt and lived in Cleveland, TN for a while. He was my aunt Maybell's third husband. Maybell's maiden name was Odom.

Lancasters from Flimby, Cumberland

Hoping for a bit of help padding out my tree, and perhaps a little help as to where to look next.

I traced back my tree back to a marriage between Joseph Lancaster and Mary Wilson on 10 Jan 1781 in Greystoke, Cumberland.

From what I could tell from the records they had 6 children, Joseph, John, Thomas, Sarah, William Wilson and my decendant (the youngest) Isaac.

Isaac married a Jane Spark on 2 May 1818 in Flimby and had children Thomas (1819), Joseph (1821) (my decendant) and Mary Ann (1823) who I believe married a Thomas Brown on 22 Feb 1845 in Deaham. There is also a suggestion of a 4th child Elizabeth born in 1829 from the 1821 census. However Isaac looks like he died sometime either November or December 1823

Joseph married I believe a Jane Walker on 25 Feb 1843 in Parish of Dearham, and had 2 Children who survived, my decendant William (1857) and Jane (1847) Later married a John Rawlings. With the suggestion per the 1851 census of 2 other children, presumed died.

William married Sarah Liddle from Spittal Tongues in 1880.

From that point I have very accurate details of children and families from the direct line.

What I really am after is,

1. Where was the First Joseph married in 1781 was from, I searched all the parish records in Cumberland without sucess for his birth, and came up with nothing.

2. Isaac who died in 1823, did not show any further info on the parish death record, but I know he was a miner, probably working at Flimby mine. Perhaps he was in a mining accident, but I can't find any records of anything like that.

3. Does anyone share a common decendant with any of the above and maybe we can pool information?

Cheers in advance.

Update from the Lancaster Surname Project!

Hello Lancasters!

There has been a lot going on but not much said on this forum recently. As usual there have been many reasons to wait to give updates: waiting for test results, on-going discussions with various people, people waiting for wills to arrive etc. Time to try to give a flavour of what is going on.

Also keep in mind that I've been updating the public summary, so you might want to cross reference there... http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Lancaster.htm (Notice in green how I have been trying to collect information from all families about how far back their paper trails go, and whether they have connecting paper trails to other participants. If you can add or correct anything, please do!) I'll refer to some of our other many webpages as we go along...

1. Our "table 1" group of Lancasters from West Yorkshire and Eastern Lancashire, with its still mysterious connection to Satterthwaite is my group. Various tests are pending, but a couple of interesting updates:

	With the latest markers, our Carpenter cousin's closest match is no longer clearly the Lancaster branch within the group, but perhaps the Satterfields of the USA.
	The same results now make my Colne Lancasters (http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Macleay%20Lancasters.html ) look closer to the Cliviger Lancasters. It will be very interesting to see if this pattern can be confirmed on more markers.
	On the genealogy front, I've made a new webpage about those Cliviger Lancasters and their origins, here: http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/cliviger.html
	Our group has invested in several tests for a new multi part marker, called DYF710. Let’s hope it is as useful as DYF399 for splitting up families.

2. The group at the top of table 2.

I think it has already been announced here and in other places that we seem to have proven that the Lancasters of Henrico Co, are one and the same family as those of York Co, presumably all descending from Gowan Lancaster who arrived in America in the 1600s. See http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/henrico.html

We only have one Henrico line tested past 12 markers and we lost contact with the other person, so one of the investments our project’s supporters should consider is upgrading him to confirm the pattern here. These two families together make up for a lot of all American Lancasters.

3. Our other big American group in table 2.

The main part of these descend from Robert Lancaster or Lancashire of Surry Co and Isle of White Co. See the page put together by co-admin John E Lancaster: http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Robert%20L%20of%20Surrey%20...

They have already been connected successfully to the Bucks Co Quaker Lancasters, http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Bucks%20Co.html who match in turn with a family who, like them, came from the Birmingham area in the English midlands.

This latter family is another one currently stuck on 12 markers, which it would benefit the project greatly if we could make sure this was upgraded. We originally lost contact with the participant, but now we have contact with the family. We are hoping that between the family and perhaps with the encouragement of other project supporters, we'll manage an upgrade soon.

All these lines were suspected to come from Northern England. See Tony's webpage http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Quaker%20Lancasters.html

Well, last night (not yet showing on any public webpage) we received a new match to this increasingly large group, this time for a family from Kendal, in the northwest of England. This is very exciting news! We have two other families from this important Lancaster area (see http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/De%20Lancasters%20of%20West... ) but this one is so widespread, and it seems so old.

This new result is another one which is only 12 markers. Again, it is in the interests of Lancaster genealogy to upgrade if we can find a way.

4. The Maryland Catholic Lancasters. http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/maryland%20lancasters.html

Lancashire Records Office is very slowly filling its overseas will copy orders, and Lesa now has hers. I have already received a trickle of information which seems to confirm two things so far:

	Captain John at the top of the family tree seems to be the son of another John, who was married to a Catherine.
	Comparison of wills seems to make it more certain than before that we are dealing with a branch of the Rainhill Lancaster family. http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/The%20Lancasters%20of%20Rai...

In closing, remember that all sorts of participation and help and support are needed and many possibilities are summarized here: http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/participate%20Lancaster.htm . And thanks to everyone already involved!

In any case if you have any ideas or questions or comments or whatever, please feel free to contact me on Andrew.lancaster@skynet.be

Best Regards
Andrew Lancaster
Lancaster DNA project
http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/
I'm looking for any information on her ancestors.
I've found 2 Matilda Lancasters (I think) living in the same area at about the same time. One I can follow down through descendants, the other has ancestors, but the wrong husband (Charlotte Bell Lancaster, her parents are Zacheriah Lancaster and Elizabeth Smith). It would be nice to connect them, in that I bet they were related (if not the same person who remarried or something).
Thanks for your time.
steve

I am looking for someone related to Lenora Sharp Lancaster married unknown Lancaster. She had children named Alan Lancaster & Dora Ford Lancaster. Lenora was born in Tennessee to Willis Monroe Sharp and Harriett Harder Sharp. Lenora was born abt. 1875. I think she died before 1928 because Harriett's will lists the children rather than Lenora. They were listed as living in Oklahoma in 1928. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

John Lancaster of Patricroft

I am trying to solve the puzzle of whether there is a connection between the Lancaster families of Cliviger, Lancs. and my Grt.x3 grandfather John Lancaster b.1775 Patricroft,m.Rachel Crompton, d.1845. The information that I have been given is that John was brought up at Height Farm, renamed Merril Head - the next door farm being Pearson House. However both of these farms are at Cliviger not Patricroft.According to 1841 census another Lancaster family occupied Pearsons until 1881, John Lancaster b.1781 d.1848 followed by his son John b.1819.To add to the confusion there is yet another Lancaster family living at Bents House, Cliviger covering the same period.
I would dearly love to know whether in fact there is a connection between these families - can anyone help?

Helping collect notes on Lancaster families with good early paper trails

See my posting of 25 May, where I asked for people interested to help collect Lancaster paper trails which are specifically early ones, for example before 1750.

I have had a lot of people contact me interested to see if they can help, or what it might mean. Many were trying to get a feeling for what I have in mind. Two Lancaster genealogists have made the first two "guest webpages" which I've posted on my collection of Lancaster research webpages. They are good examples of what I think will be very helpful for many of us...

See
http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Robert%20L%20of%20Surrey%20...
http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Bucks%20Co.html

You might notice that both these families are American, and that this therefore also helps me in an area I have not personally done as much work on.

To repeat, I am looking for work which compliments what is already available on the internet, or what I am already working on.

The aim is to help get information about Lancasters in an easy to use form, because many of us have family trees that get stuck in the 1700s, and we therefore want to know which families are already known in that period.

Best Regards
Andrew

I have info on Lancasters of which I am
typing an excerpt. I got this in London,
England around 1992. It is part of a
history of the Lancaster name, if you
would like the address where to get a
copy just drop me a line at:
Lovejoys@sciti.com

North American migrants considered kinsman
of the family name Lancaster:

Gowen Lancaster arrived in Virginia in 1635
Phillip Lancaster arrived in the Barbados
in 1680, with his servants
William Lancaster settled in the Barbados
in 1668
Daniel and Robert Lancashire settled in
Virginia in 1684
Edward, Frederick, John, Joseph,
Mary, Richard, Thomas, and William Lancaster
all arrived in Philadelphia between 1840
and 1860. From the port of arrival settlers
joined the wagon trains westward.
During the American War of Independence
some declared their loyalty to the Crown
and moved northward into Canada and became
known as the United Empire Loyalists.

Lancaster family, Atherton, Lancs, UK

I am searching for info regarding JOHN LANCASTER (b 1895) ROBERT SMITH LANCASTER (b 1900 - married Ethel Aldred/Ainsbough 1920) and CHARLES LANCASTER (1908-1955, married Alice Glover 1926) all from ATHERTON, Lancs, UK. Their parents are MARK LANCASTER (1875-1945) and ELLEN SMITH. MARK and CHARLES were living at 58 SAMUEL ST, ATHERTON at the time of their deaths. My grandfather was James William Lancaster, second son of Mark and Ellen. He and my grandmother migrated to NZ in 1924, they separated shortly after and all contact with our English Lancaster relatives was lost. Any info appreciated even if you are not sure it is relevant. A seemingly tiny bit of info could be the breakthrough I'm looking for!

Lancaster DNA Project: an action by participants

Hello everyone

I am re-posting this message, a version of a message which has been posted on other forums also, after having been advised of the correct format which is permitted. (I apparently mentioned too much detail about commercial things. If my new wording seems vague, please write to me for more explanation.)

On the one hand I have contact with many people interested in getting their Lancaster families involved in DNA testing, who just don't seem able to cross the threshold and take the decision.

On the other hand those of us who are tested are waiting for our cousins, and we know more about how easy it is and what benefits can eventually come.

I therefore now propose that as a community and family we help each other make some breakthroughs.

Therefore I call for participation in two ways:-

1. Join me as a person helping others to take part. The method for doing this is explained here:- http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/participate%20Lancaster.htm

2. Make an application!
Write to me at andrew.lancaster@skynet.be or post here, concerning your furthest back Lancaster male line relatives, for whom you have a male Lancaster standing by and ready to be tested.

People with good family trees going back before 1850, and especially going back before 1800, are especially welcome!

Mainly the aim is to get people thinking about joining. The value of the DNA project is directly connected to how many families are in it.

Best Regards
Andrew

A note about DNA tests concerning Ancestry.com's test

Hi Lancaster genealogists

It is great to hear that Ancestry.com's new DNA testing is getting more Lancasters involved in "genetic genealogy": giving more strength to the newest tool we genealogists have.

Please however note that until they get the necessary data and software up-and-running they are not giving automatic information about the existance of the Lancaster DNA Project.

Please note that the Lancaster DNA project if a group of Lancaster genealogists, who use different testing labs. Most labs already tell their Lancaster customers about us automatically. I understand Ancestry are building up to this.

So contact me if you are getting tested, and we'll make sure you are recognized as one of the team! Remember that being able to compare results with others is necessary to get value out of the test.

Best Regards
Andrew Lancaster

Fellow Lancaster Genealogists!

I have announced bits and pieces of webpage notes about Lancasters before, but I have just finished a major reorganization of my work. Although it is still a "work in progress" rather than a finished authoritative work, I think it is becoming more comprehensive and useful.

I certainly hope it helps all of you, because the more we can all learn together the better!
Lancaster DNA

A large percentage of discussions on this list involve different people comparing their "walls" with each other and then agree that they may well be related, but for now this is just a theory that can be kept in mind.

I just wanted to mention that this is exactly the kind of situation that the Lancaster DNA project is working. We are Lancaster genealogists, who organize our own testing privately and then compare notes. DNA testing is a good way to at least see who is related and who is not.

I've tried to summarize some of the options for testing here:
http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/participate%20Lancaster.htm

The more of us get involved, the more useful the results!

Andrew Lancaster
andrew.lancaster@skynet.be

Harry LANCASTER b 3 May 1892 d 24 June 1926 Kansas City, MO

Subject Harry LANCASTER son of Samuel and Mary Ann Ashcraft LANCASTER was born 3 May 1892 in Kansas City, Jackson Co, MO and died 24 June 1926 in Kansas City, MO. His death certificate lists his cause of death as a suicide by hanging himself with a leather belt. He hung himself at the No 4 Police Station in Kansas City. I would like to find information on why he was at the Police Station. The assumption would be that he had been arrested for some crime and rather than face trial decided to end his life. He is buried at Quindaro Cemetery.

Lancasters of Perry, Gibson, Obion Counties TN

I'm trying to find the relatives of Willie Baker Lancaster, her husband Leslie. She was born in Perry Co. TN about 1890, and was living in Gibson County in 1930. I visited her in Rives, Obion County, many years later. She was my grandmother's sister. Her mother Mary Jane Baker was probably living with them in the 30's. They had children named Irene, John and Joe. Does anyone know anything about this family? Are any of this family still living in the area? Thank you in advance for any help.

DNA Project Update!

Dear Lancasters and kin

We now have at least hypothetical proposals for the DNA signatures of several famous Lancaster families. Which one will you be related to?

*The medieval Lancaster Barons of Kendal
*The descendants of Gilbert Fitz Reinfrid who signed the Magna Carta
*The family of Sir James Lancaster, sailor, adventurer, businessman, bucaneer etc under Elizabeth I.
*The noble family of the Lancasters of Rainhill.
*The family of one of the first quakers, James Lancaster of Welney Island.
*The family of the educationalist Joseph Lancaster.
*Several early American families.

Please note that we actually NEED a few different confirmations before we should feel that we have confirmed an identification. This means that we still need more participants, though it is already reasonable to be excited about the results coming in.

The relevant webpages for Lancaster DNA study are here:

Lancaster Project summary
http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Lancaster.htm

How to participate
http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/participate%20Lancaster.htm

Best Regards
Andrew Lancaster

Isaac Lancaster son of Isaac Edwin Lancaster, and Mariah Laughlin

I am wondering if anyone may have information on Isaac Lancaster, son of Isaac Edwin Lancaster, and Mariah Laughlin. I am curious to see if anyone has come up with a death date and place of death yet. The last time I find him in the records is 1850 Census. I have never found the family on the 1860 Census, we know they were moving around then, and were in IA, as they had two children there. Edwin Lancaster, b. 1857, and Alice Marie Lancaster b. 1860. It is soon after that they travel west on the Oregon Trail, to Oregon, and then by 1870 they are in Cache Creek Twp., Yolo Co., State of California, but you never see Isaac there.

Also we know that when Brother Morris Lancaster shot and killed brother John Lancaster on 2 Aug. 1879, that he ran. He said he went to see another brother living in Antelope Valley, and his brother thinking his mind was woundering talked him in to returning to Mason Valley. I can't seem to place any of the other parts of the family in Antelope Valley, and am woundering if it was Isaac maybe.

Nan Curtis
Niteowl1001@Hotmail.com
bncurtis101@aol.com

Lancaster names listed in Kennedy Cemetery in Chesnut Mountain, GA

If anyone is interested, I have just uploaded ALL of the headstone/tombstone pictures of the Family names in the Kennedy cemetery for:
Adam, Bell, Benton, Boggs, Brown, Cooper, Daniel, Emmitt, Foster, Hanes, Kennedy, Lancaster, Little, Lowery, Maddox, Merritt, Orr, Pirkle, Smith, Turk, Wellborn, and Young.

The cemetery list is complete, with the exception of two graves that have stones broken to the ground and are missing.
The cemetery is located on Winder Highway (Hwy 53 and 211 junction) It is not well kept, although the sign was recently posted and construction is going on quite near. It is just before the Golden Pantry store, or just after, depending which way you come and the store sits at the corner of Hwy 211/53 and Tanner's Mill Road at Chestnut Mountain.

To see the pics and names, go to www.findagrave.com. The site is free and you can begin to search all over the US for volunteers (like myself and my friend) who do this on a weekly basis. You can also search by state and county. With any luck, someone just may have posted a picture of YOUR ancestor too :)
