I'll have to go back to my notes. My father was Loyd Grayson Lands. His brother is Joseph Lands. His father was Richard Lands who died in Charlotte in 1923. His grandfather was, I think,Jesse. I have been to several Lands Family reunions in Spartanburg. I don't have my notes by I think that my grandfather had a sister who married a Lancaster. Does that sound like a match?
My grandfather is John Floyd Lands. Their first son was Lloyd Truly Lands, born in 1910, died in 1912.

To the best of my knowledge, William, married to Mary (maiden name unknown) is the father of my James Lands.
My wife is a descendant of James William Lands (June 03, 1854 - March 10, 1947), and Margaret Adams (March 26, 1857 - March 14, 1949).

From the Rootsweb board, I gather you are as well. I think I have found the right family in Coweta Co., Georgia, and back to Spartanburg, South Carolina, but have not made the precise connection I would like to.

If you have progressed beyond James and Maggie, let me know.

Regardless, please contact me. We would like to hear from you.
Lies about Marissa Storey

Dear Tim, All of a sudden I had a brainstorm. First, who is this SC Aristocracy who "knows" about Marissa Julia. Well, just look at the FACTS. Marissa was the daughter of John and Nancy McElwain Storey, the YOUNGEST daughter. Her father John died by on in 1805. So, how can she have a sister 20 years younger? That is a SCREAM! If anything Julia was a niece and not a nice one.Nancy McElwain Storey didn't move to GA until John died. All this information is in the Coweta Co Family Book. Marissa Jacob's gr-Grandson William W. Lands has a special citation from President Wilson for his actions and death in WWI. That is aristocracy to me, and though he lived in TX (b. Spring Place GA) he fought with the SC replacement troops for some reason. He is buried in the American Cemetery south of Paris. It is in a beautiful heavy brass frame. I do not know where people get their info.

Dear Carol,
Everything I 'know' about Marissa comes from the book, which, quite honestly, I have some skepticism about. Some of it I have 'verified' at websites, but the 'verifying' information is so sparse that it also leaves room for doubt.
The book says:
Marissa was born in 1805 in SC; 'verified',but no specific date or place
her father is not named;'verifying' birth record names NEITHER parent
her mother is listed as 'Margaret'; unverified, and apparently false
The Johnson cousins who wrote the book claimed to think they were related to the Storeys through Julia, and did not realize what relation Marissa was.
As you can see, there is little information on either the Storeys or Lands in the book.
The worst thing that it says about Marissa, I don't want to discuss publicly. But, if IT wasn't true, I wouldn't be around to search for information.
Marissa had a granddaughter who married a Johnson, which was the reason for the inclusion of Storeys in the book. That grandaughter, however, was the product of a second marriage after a divorce (Marissa's son and daughter-in-law), so their blue-blooded noses started to rise. Finding Marissa's son ended their foray into the Storey story.
If we can figure out how to e-mail directly, I can give you names and dates that you don't have. Please tell me about Marissa's heritage.
Tim

Looking for William Lands' father

I am looking for the father of William Lands who was born 1862 in Indiana. He was the son of Nancy Barton and ????? Lands. His mother Nancy Barton was born in Illinois in 1840 and moved with her family to Reynolds County, Mo. as a child. Her father was John Barton and her mother Mary Polly (Earles) Barton. Do not know how Nancy wound up back in Il/Ind.area and became the mother of William. His father was supposedly in the Civil War and he and Nancy divorced. Nancy eventually married Edward Lewey, a French Canadian Civil War vet, and settled in Missouri. Nancy died in 1912, her son William Lands in 1905. Any help out there as to who William's father was?- where he and Nancy Barton married, when and if William Lands' father stayed in the Illinois/Indiana area and remarried? William Lands married Melvine Massey in Dent County, Mo. in 1881 and they had a large family. Cannot trace William Lands' lineage backwards, though. Any help out there? Thank you.
