Hey Te-Arow

Have you had any success in researching the 1860, 50, etc. censuses? If not, try searching the surrounding states. Also try the state archives. It was unusual for them to be free, and the states often kept a paper trail on free blacks. All the free black Langstons in my family tree originate in NC or VA. If you discover how your ancestors became free, and stayed free, I'd love to hear that story!

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tugaloo/

Chip Langston

After doing some research: Levi Langston's mother was either a Kirby or Thomas not White as listed on his SC death certificate. Lavinia McKnight (CM Lee), Linny A McKnight(James Daniel Hargrove), and Judiah Jedidah (W H Lewis)were half-sisters of Levi Langston. See my earlier reply. Apparently, Margaret had only two Langston children.

This is the info that I have--Death Certificate for Levi: parents Judson and Maggie White Langston. Obit for Levi list 1 brother CW Langston of Sardis, SC & 3 sisters Mrs. W H Lewis of Timmonsville, SC, Mrs. JD Hargrove of Arizona, Mrs. C M Lee of Dillon, SC. The Darlington District Cemetery Book lists Mrs.W H Lewis as Jeddie McKnight Lewis. The 1860 Census has Levi living with the McKnights. Barbara

Kate Ainslie Smith - Glasgow, Scotland

This is my grandmother and I have been trying to find info on her. All I know is that she was from Glasgow, Scotland and was born Dec 8, 1904 - died Feb 4,1937. Married George Neysmith Ferguson Dec 21, 1920 at Hutchesontown, Glasgow. Had 2 children (my mother Kate Ainslie Ferguson - and son Hamish)
My mother recently passed away and never talked much about her side of the family. She may have had aunts - Jean - Marion (Min) - Mary. Perhaps an Uncle Willie who was a seaman. The aunt Mary married a George Bannister (?) and lived in New York but I think the rest of them stayed in Scotland. Have no idea of what the names of the great grandparents name but I was told they owned a restaurant. My mother was born at 89 Plantation Street in Glasgow and lived at 109 Paisley Road after that. I guess this is the proverbial needle in the haystack!! Thanks.

looking for Canadian Langstons who settled in Winnipeg Manitoba early part of 1900's - Brothers Archibald (1879-1945) and William (1873 - 1950) both born in London, Engand. Some Langstons also in BC . Archibald was my grandfather married to Sarah Davis (changed last name from Sherbikoff I have been told). Thewy had 6 children - Archie, Edna, Kay, Frances, Ernie and John (my father). I think the brother William may have moved to BC. My grandparents lived at Gunton at one time and my grandfather fought in England in WW1. She went back after the war and my father was born inLondon England 1920. Emigrated back to Canada arriving in June 1920. Have some history done by a John Langston of Teulon, Manitoba from 2006.

African American Langston's

Hello! my name is Te-Arow Newsome (African American) and I am researching the Langston side of my family. My relatives come from Smith County, MS via AL. My great-great grandfather's name is Lark Langston (about 1855 MS)and his father's name is Eli Langston (DOB:1815). Eli Langston married Sarah Langston (DOB: 1821 SC) and was living here in MS in the 1870's. By the 1880's Eli was widowed and had moved back to AL with his other family.

He has a son by the name of Clay Langston who married Rebecca Langston and had a son by the name of Robert. On the 1870's census, they lived on Jefferson Street in Montgomery County AL, near the city councilamn Holland Thomas. I also know he was employed with F H Warren & Co as a shoemaker in 1880-1881, a porter, and lived at 7 Dexter Ave. I am unable to find any additional information on Clay Langston or the rest of the family.

I have made many attempts to contact Langston's in AL, via phone, but have been unlucky only contacting caucasian Langston's.I am attempting to find information on Eli's son, and Eli himself as far as siblings, mother, father, how he came to MS, where he is buried, and if he had any other children or relatives in AL, and to basically connect with this side of my family, in which my relatives don't have any contact of Eli's other family.

If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

SC Langstons,

My grandmother is Faye Elizabeth Langston (still alive), her parents were Marvin Langston (1890-1941) and Emma Genora Crane (1893- ). She had a brother Charles (1921-2002), and 2 sisters who passed as infants.

Her father, Marvin Langston, was the son of William Langston (1860- ) and Loyennia or Eugenia (1875- ) . I think it was probably Eugenia because I can't find any other records of Loyennia... he also had siblings: Willie, May Bell, and Joe G.

I am having trouble tracing the line back further than this. They all live/lived in Greenville and Abbeville Counties in SC.

Any advice on the best way to keep searching? Part of the difficulty is that many could not read/write so name spellings and dates are all over the place. My grandmother has 2 birth certificates, different dates on each ?!?

Candace's middle name was Thomas. I do not think she was married before. They had a daughter named Candace T. My line is Jesse's brother, William Walker Butler.
We have DNA match through Jesse and Candace's son, Nathan.
We also have DNA match through Jesse and William's brother, John.
The Butler's were intertwined with the Langston's and Hinshaw's (Baptist ministers) I am trying to find the Langston's history to tie them to the Butler's before Candace.

My husband's great grandmother's name was Josephine Langston and she had a brother by the name of Andrew Jackson. Jackson was not his surname. It became his surname when he went to pay taxes on his land and they had him listed as Andrew Jackson. In order to keep his land he had to use the name Andrew Jackson. Today his family name is Jackson. Your family history sounds very much like my husband's.

ANN BEDENFIELD
