I am looking for information about Joseph J LaPorte born Feb. 24,1872 in Bruce County Ontario to Joseph and Rosanna LaPorte. They were farming in Ontario and came to the US in 1895. They settled in Elkwood area of Westhope Township in Cavalier County where he began farming. On Nov. 15 he Married Theresa Catherina Groff. They became parents of 12 children. I especially interested in finding more information about Joseph's parents Joseph and Rosanna Laporte from Bruce county Ontario.

This Adolph Farrow that's married to Mary or May, was Adolph Jr. His parents were Adolph Farrow (Ferro) & Susanne Morissette from the info I have. Adolph Sr. is my 3rd great grandfather. He was born in Canada in 1832 & worked for the Hudson Bay Fur Traders and then moved to the St. Paul, Oregon area & was one of the first settlers there...the French Prairie. If you have any more info on this line I would love to hear from you!!! Thanks for your time

Re: "Dictionnaire Genealogique des familles Laporte et St. Georges"

Bill - If you are still reading this or getting responses, I'd appreciate any help you might offer with your Dictionary.

I've been stuck between my 3rd and 5th (and beyond) Great Grandfathers.

I have solid support for my line back to Julius La Porte (b. 1812) in Quebec. His son Moses is my 2nd Great Grandfather. Julius was his father. But I'm sketchy beyond this. I BELIEVE that Julius' father was Charles La Porte and had brothers Nelson and Julian (and perhaps others) I think that Charles was born in 1779 in Quebec and was the son of Jean Pierre La Porte.

I've got no evidence linking Julius to Charles other than a very attenuated Census reference and someone's online speculation. I have connections between Jean Pierre and Charles, but unless the connection to Julius is solid, its not worth much to me.

Any thoughts that you might have would be most appreciated. I've tried to reach out to the Society of La Porte and St-Georges but have been unable to get any response regarding the dictionary.

All the best,

Michael

Both would be correct. You are dealing with American variations of French names. Names ended up being spelled all sorts of ways. Lavoice would originally have been Lavoie.
Chris

I also run into Magaret Lowell as her mother and all the dates are the same. Magarets father is also James A.Lavoice/Lowell. And hear mother is Magaret Brousseau/Bruce. I don't know which line is correct. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Donna

Hi, Michael S. LaPorte. Are you still out there in ancestry/email land? If your understanding is correct, we are first cousins. Our family has been discussing your email over the years and also your meeting at a trucking conference with Jeffrey LaPorte, Donald and Ruth LaPorte's 2nd son. We would like to talk to you. If there is some chance this link still works, please contact me.

Michael Lewis
Nephew of Donald and Ruth LaPorte

But yes indeed if you have access to any info on the adoption of my father that would be great, if not I know it has been awhile since you sent this message, so I understand if you moved back home or away. I hope everything is okay with your mom and dad. I know Uncle Bill wasn`t in good health the last time I saw him in 2007. Please stay in contact, Thanks Donna

Hi, Cousin Andie. I have a slight change in your reply. Donald LaPorte was the son of Gasper and Edna LaPorte. His wife was Ruth vom Scheidt. They were/are my aunt and uncle. Uncle Donald died about 10 years ago and Aunt Ruth is in an assisted living facility. However, they had three boys and one girl--my first cousins and none of them is the person this man is looking for. Michael

Hi My name is Donna LaPorte, I`ve been looking for info on my father, and his birth parents a long time. He was born Dec 9 1929, my grandparents were Aldrick Fredrick LaPorte and Mary Rose(View) LaPorte. They supposedly adopted my father and then had eight children after him, which makes no sense to me? Why marry then adopt and have eight children after, unless something has happened, like out of wed-lock. Which I could possible see, since he had an affair with my aunt and bore a child with her. All I have heard is that his mother died in childbirth and her last name was Warren or Worden? Please any info appreciated, Thanks Donna

Yes, my dad was in the Battle of the Bulge, but that's not him in the pix with 3 guys in front of barracks bldg. Maybe another Raymond LaPorte? There was one guy my dad met in Vermont, same first.last names, about the same age. He was Sgt in the Pacific till he went to Officers Candidate School, was 1LT at end of the war. You can see a good head shot of him in post-war years, and on his other photos, first pix, he's the one in the middle of three guys (brothers). Find him as Raymond Edward La Porte at my tree, La Porte Sorel Henault Family Tree.

Nice to hear from you. I have no wartime pix, he was wounded in Belgium and removed to a hospital. His unit had only 10% survival rate. It was a lifetime burden to him.

I'll double check info, but I don't think this was his unit. I parked some notes in a book of mine and can't find them!

Another good shot in uniform, see my mom's wedding photo from Fort Dix.

It's fun, isn't it? But at times, I have tears in my eyes.

Good Evening Bill,

I'm not sure if you're still responding to mail regarding the LaPorte family book or how current the book has stayed. However, my section of the family has kept records that may be useful to the more current generations.. I would attach it, but it seems it wont accept the PDF file we keep this in for integrity. Our family documentation contains neat information on family members maintained through the centuries... and picture links, marriage certificates, castles owned... cool stuff! I've included a tid bit below. However, I'd really like the book. Please e-mail me if you'd like a copy "M M LaPorte at yahoo dot com"

Is the information for acquiring the book still accurate?

Thank you,

Michelle LaPorte 1969
of
William G. LaPorte Essex County - Windsor Ontario 1939
of
William J. Laporte Essex County - Windsor Ontario 1905
of
Arthur LaPorte Essex County - 1884
of
Pierre LaPorte St Paul (Joliette) Quebec 1838
of
Pierre La Porte Sainte-Paul (Joliette) 1769
of
Louis LaPorte in Lanoraie, Berthier, Québec 1748
of
Pierre La Porte Quebec 1690
of
Louis LaPorte Boucherville (Montreal), Québec 1667
Of
Jaques LaPorte 1627
Although most of Jacques dit St Georges Laporte’s children were born in Boucherville or Montréal, he died in 1686 in Contrecoeur, further north (below or downstream) along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. Here is some information about Contrecoeur:
Contrecoeur, a parish in Verchères county, Quebec, on the south bank of the St. Lawrence
river, 30 miles below Montreal. It was settled as early as 1668, and in part of the seigniory of Contrecoeur, granted in 1672 to the Sieur de Contrecoeur, an officer in the
Carignan regiment. (Source: W. Stewart Wallace, ed., The Encyclopedia of Canada, Vol.
II, Toronto, University Associates of Canada, 1948, 411p., p. 120.)

Hi Andie, all I can find is that my g. grandfather Louis Varin married Adelaide, aka Adeline, aka Adea Sorel Laporte in Redford on 2/2/1868. They had 7 children and she died when my grandfather Andre/Henry was 7. Andre/Henry was born on 8/13/1877. Louis Varin was from Napierville and so was his father. However I know I saw a document some where that said my grandfather Andre (Henry) Varin was Canadien....but it may have meant his family was Canadien. My g. father may have been in born in Redford after all since his birth registration and that of all his sibs are listed there. I suppose they may have gone back and forth across the border for work and probably. Adelaide Sorel LaPorte had been married previously to a Bourdon and had one daughter Adelaide Bourdon....also sometimes listed as Burdo. So I really have no info on where Moises Sorel Laporte was from other than Redford. I do have my Adelaide's DOB and date of death but not where I am looking at the moment. There were so many with the same name that the dates did not line up with what I have for my Adelaide.

Hi Linda,
Good to hear from you, I do remember our past emails. I most definitely would like to know what town in Canada your
grandfather was born. It would help establish where Isabelle and Moise emigrated from. I have a record of a woman by the name of Marie Isabelle Bissonette from Lacadie, St. Jean, Quebec from around the same marriagble age as Moise, or Paul Moyse Sorel. I am almost positive that Moise was actually Paul Moyse Sorel, son of Francois Sorel LaPorte from St. Constant Quebec and is a direct descendent of Hilare Jean Baptiste Sorel. I do not have any record of Moise and Isabelle's marriage. It is a big mystery for all of us from this line. My understanding is that many of the marriage and baptismal records from northern NY and Vermont at this time were sometimes lost or not recorded properly because the priests were missonaries traveling from village to village. I do have a record somewhere of an Adeline born in 1843 living with Moise and Isabelle Sorel Laporte. I will have to find the source of this information and forward it to you.
I haven't spent much time recently on this as my husband and I have taken over the operation of a restaurant that has been in my family on my mother's side since 1924. As you can imagine, it is a time consuming endeavor. If you have any info on the Moise-Isabelle connection, please send it to me. Thanks for your post.
Always,
Andie.

Hi Andie, we have chatted before. I am still stuck on Mosies Sorel and Marie Bissonette. I have never been able to link them in census records to grandfather's mother Adelaide Sorel LaPorte but I know her parish was also listed as Redford. I do know that she my Adelaide had my grandfather just across the border in Canada before they moved to N.Y. as he is listed on census records as having been born in Canada. I found many other Adelaide Sorel-Laportes listed but they are not her and she is not listed as their daughter. I "might" have info on which town he was born in Canada, I will look it up and let you know if it is listed. That could be of help to you if it is, possibly.

Hi Rae,

I don't remember Nan much, as I was only 11 when this happened, and she was out of the house by the time I was 7. The summer of '69, my grandmother and I went to visit her for a couple of days, and I got to know her a little more. I had a grand time playing with the kids! Gary took Karen and I out to pick some cherries at a local orchard - I remember that the car was a white Pontiac, maybe a Lemans or GTO type. Gary was laughing and talking with us, kidding around a bit. He gave no hint of what was to come.

I still miss them all; I forgave Gary a long time ago. The ones I blame the most for this was the idiot doctors at Rochester Psych Center for letting him out. Ironically, I worked there in the early '80's, and they were still idiots!

I hate Christmastime, I have lots of problems with depression at that time. January is hard also, as Nan's birthday is the 25th; she would have been 65 this year.
It is hard to believe that Gary would be in his 70's, Karen would have been 46 and the twins 45.

One thing I have been meaning to contact Carol or Marlene about is photos - I was wondering if they had any photos of Gary, Nana and the kids - we only have a couple. I would be willing to pay for any copies made.

You can email me at mishwahr@yahoo.com

Patti
Hi, Patti. Gary was my first cousin, His father Arthur F. Jr. and my dad, Raymond Edward, were brothers. My name is Rae Elaine LaPorte (1946). Gary was 10 years older than me, and Roger about three years older than me. I have three siblings, none of us have any birth children. I now live in Kansas.

What funny thoughts come to mind. Once I was in my grandmother's kitchen (Northwood Cabins), I was at the table and she must have been at the sink and turned right to glance out the picture window (that she was very proud of, she displayed her colored glass in that window) and spotted Gary, driving in on one of the three semicircular driveways (built so the cabins would appear spacious). I'll never forget her remark, as it was totally uncharacteristic of her, and I was pretty much stunned. She said, "Here comes Gary, like a bat out of hell."

I only met Deanna once, before they had the twins. It was at my grandmother's. I recall, they were all tickled that Karen resembled my baby picture that my grandmother had on her wall, of me on a light-colored afghan.

We lost a beautiful family. It affects me deeply at Christmastime, the experience was too hurtful to fade. I was recovering from a breakdown I experienced in 1968, my parents decided not take our family to the funeral, that's how catastrophic it was. My info was from Gary's dad, my Uncle Art.

To get my tree, enter Roger Allen La Porte and view my comments. I was not able to make any public comment about Gary. Frankly, after I entered the names, I cried (and I'm crying now). You never know who you'll meet here. Contact me any time, will give you my phone number by e-mail, if you like.

video411@cox.net

Leo's actualy name was "Lawrence". He was born in 1915 and died in Tupper in 1980. He was the nicest person one could ever know. Pauline is still with us--living in Tupper. My mom was Beulah LaPorte Lewis, daughter of Gasper and Edna Sears LaPorte. Gary was a good friend of my brother and Roger, of my sister. We were/are "double" 2nd cousins as our grandmothers were sisters and our grandfathers were brothers. M. Lewis

Hello,

I believe Pauline is still around - I don't remember reading an obit for her. I did a quick ssdi search for her and Leo, and didn't get a hit. I am going to see if I can find out more on them.

BTW, who was your father? My brother in law was Gary Laporte.

Patti

Hi, Rae. This is your cousin, Michael Lewis. I am glad your mom is doing well. Had a nice chat both with Carole Carrillo and Marlene Sabin over the holidays. Anyway, Pauline (b. 1917--same as my late mom) is alive in Tupper Lake. Her son, John, helps her out a lot. He is a disabled policeman around our age. Give me a call or private email lewism@csus.edu and I'll give you and your mom Pauline's address and phone number in Tupper. Leo and Pauline were indeed a wonderful couple. My parents often stayed with them when they visited Tupper in the summers. My best. Michael
