Neat! Did his family pass down any family history about the Laquays? I think you saw my post about trying to connect these Laquays with mine. I'm interested to see if your BiL's Laquays had some family lore where a few brothers came over from France. I was in contact with a Laquay in France who told me that no one in his tree came to the US, but he did hear of some Laquays (I guess not directly related) from Eastern France who did.

I live in New Jersey, but I work full time so theoretically it should be easy to research these records for Peter Sr. Unfortunately, because of work, it is not. However, I plan to go to the Somerset County Clerk's office after Christmas to see if I can find the actual record for Peter Larkey and Polly Vantine. I'll keep you posted. I also have inquiries into the Hillsborough Reformed Church (believed to be the Dutch Reformed Church that the marriage and few christenings took place). If I have time, the same day that I'm at the Somerset clerk's office, I will try to head to Hillsborough to check out the church records.

I found a newspaper index for Rochester, NY where there is a marriage announcement for Anna Maria Laquay and Stephen Hopkins. Anna Maria is supposed to be one of Peter's daughters born in Millstone, NJ. I also found what I believe to be her death announcement, Stephen's death announcement, and their daughter's marriage announcement. I should receive the original articles in the next few weeks. I will be glad to share my findings. Peter is presumed to be dead at this point, but maybe Anna's mother was still alive.

The following death certificate links Peter LaQuay and ___ Van Tyne as the parents of Peter L. LaQuay Sep 1826 NY -1911 Kalamazoo MI. Tombstone says 1826-1911. Apart from the following death certificate, there is a marriage in Ancestry.com NJ marriages

New Jersey Marriages, 1684-1895 (Ancestry.com)
about Polly Vantine
Name: Peter Larkey (an R-dropping registrar could easily hear LaQuay in French and write Larkey)
Spouse: Polly Vantine (Polly=Mary)
Marriage Date: 22 Jul 1820
County: Somerset
State: NJ

Does anyone have further reasonably hard data linking these two? If so what? Please note: the plentiful chatter at Familysearch.org and in online trees is not data unless it contains real sources that lead to contemporary reports. If anyone has hard copies of the contemporary sources, please scan and send to me. The death certificate is available as reported below.

Death certificate for Peter L.
Laquay and Laquey

I have found two distinct families the Laquey family and the Laquay family.

The Laquey family can be traced back to JJA Laquey who was born in VA/KY in 1800. As of right now, his parents and any extended family such as siblings, aunts, uncles, etc. are unknown.

The Laquay family seems to have several branches of their own. One branch possibly begins in New Jersey (about 1826), moving to New York, and eventually the Michigan area. This branch of the family has ties to Ellen Van Tyre Laquay Hamilton and Peter Laquay. I have found other Laquays as early as the 1800 census for Pennsylvania.

I'm hoping to find a connection between these families. My relatives come from the JJA Laquey line. The family lore is that 2 or 3 brothers came to the United States from France. I believe that one of these brothers may have been JJA's father. It is possible that one or two other brothers may be the families in the Laquay line.

I would be interested to know if anyone from the Laquay line has ever heard this type of story spoken about their ancestors. If so, then it might just be possible that the Laqueys and the Laquays are related. I have found many Laquays in French records dating back to the 1600's. It would be interesting if there was some way to trace our Laquey/Laquay lines all the way back to France.

Sincerely,

Jessica

Yes! This is the same one!!! His tombstone reads Joseph J A LaQuey. Also his son (Joseph Jr.) was known as Joe. Do you have any pictures or information of him (or his parents?)??

Please feel free to respond to this thread for other people's reference. You can also email me at jessica@gillespie.net

Look forward to hearing from you!

Jessica

Always thought JJA was John Joseph rather than the other way about. Is this the tough old guy that got shot by bushwackers in Missouri during the Civil War (supposedly in his 60s and working on his farm at the time)but lived into his 90s (said he had terrible headaches the rest of his life). The same one that got shot by Indians while crossing the praries around about the Gold Rush years? Unfortunately, he didn't find gold, and ultimately took a ship down to the Isthmus of Parama (about where the canal would be now), walked across from the Pacific side to the Atlantic side, and took a ship up to New Orleans where he headed back to Missouri? Anyway, that's what Grandmother LaQuey ) me years ago when I was a youngster.

I'm looking for any information on Joseph John Alexandar LaQuey (my great great great great grandfather). He was born in Virginia (or Kentucky before it was a state)around 1800 and died in Missouri 1891. He was married 3 times to a Mary Thomas, Ruth Williams, and Nancy Driskoll (Driskell). If anyone has any information on JJA or his wives I would appreciate it. I don't know where or who his parents were or any information on siblings. The records for Virginia and Kentucky for 1800 were destroyed in the war of 1812.
