My info on the Laramies was very well sourced at the time I looked at this family (several years ago) and I show the Joseph Francis Laramie, born in 1841 as married to Eugenie Venohx (obviously the same person as your Venot). They had seven children that I was aware of, one of which was Alexander (31 Aug 1886 - 26 Sept 1950) married to Rebecca. I show Joseph's dad as Joseph Marie Constant Aubry Laramie. I do not have an Irvin anywhere in the Laramie records.
If you think I might have further information that would be helpful to you in your search, please send me your email address as I find working on the message board as cumbersome. hirst1@yahoo.com

I am very curious about your research, since I am a Fissiault dit Laramee going back to Jacques Fissiau dit Laramee and Marie-Anne Monet.

Since many Montreal Canada families (including Beaudry and Trudeau) did go to St-Louis MO, I am looking into the people who lived there in the 1700-1800, I wonder if you made research that way. I read lots of history books to look at the context of the fur trade.

I never ran across Eugenie Venot. I followed the Laramies back to Louis Bertrand Aupry Laramee (1674-1736). Prior to that his father was an Aubry (Aupry). My wife's grandmother was Stella Marie L'armie, daughter of Ambrose Laramie and Josephine Aubuchon.

All Fissiaus (however spelled) dit Laramees or, in fact, Fissiau dit Whatever, are related. Only one Fissiau, Jacques, is recorded as coming to New France. All the rest are descended from him. As to the dropping of "dit" name s, I think it may be related to the Canadian census of 1881. My theory is that the government said no more hyphenated names in the official records. If you check the the 1881 results on ancestry.com you find only two plain Fissiaus-Emile and Joseph of Quebec. The rest apparently opted for Laramee, confusing them forwever with the great number of other families using "dit laramee" Unofficially, the "dits" continued as in marriage records. my great grand father married in St Lin as F dit L. I've located a few present day relatives around St Lin and St Roch de l'Ashigan outside of Montreal. If you write you have to explain you understand that being a Laramee proves nothing. Most seem to know.

When working with our ancestry lines, we must remember ther the clergy, the notaries writing down the names in their document, did not necessarily kmow the exact spelling of the Fissiault dit Laramee. It started with Fisciau, Ficiau, Fissiau etc. They first settled in Pointe-aux-Trembles, on the eastern tip of the Island of Montréal (not to confuse with the Pointe-aux-Trembles near Quebec City).

So any Fissiault dit Laramée living in Pointe-aux-Trembles or around that city can very well be related. I suggest that anyone doing research on that family look up a map of Quebec and see the names of the cities around Pointe-aux-Trembles. There is a real chance that they are of the same family.

The Fissiault name was dropped, I believe, around 1937 when Henri Fissiault was charged with the murder of a Saint-Pierre woman (never convicted) which cast a bad reputation on the Fissiault family.

I cannot find any contemporary Fissiault (except myself). My birth certificate does mention Fissiault dit Laramée.
Thank you so much for your explanation. I was confused by the other family trees that I was seeing with Fissiau dit Laramée name and did not understand where the "fevrier" came from, so when I was researching names, I was not sure I was finding the right people, so I gave up for a while, to do the other side of my family. The younger generations finally dropped the "dit fevrier" and used only Laramee. My grandmother's brother changed his name to Laramie when he went to the states. I am very interested in geneology, and have met quite a few of distant "cousins" through this.
Thanks again,
Lynda

The Février dit Laramée line starts with Jean-Baptiste Fissiau dit Laramée, who married Catherine-Marie Février dit Lacroix at Notre-Dame-De-Montréal church on 13 april 1744.
I believe the Février name was more prestigious than the Fissiau, so the eldest son, Joseph took the Février name; he married Marie-Jeanne Mondou in Yamaska on 15 january 1781.
2 of their children took the Février name, but 3 others reverted to Laramée. It is believed that Jacques Laramée of Wyoming is from that line. I believe that 'walkwith wolves'(Diane) who posted before you is from that line.
I hope you are still interested in genealogy. If so, please send me an e-mail.
Your reply to the posting was way back in 2001 and you stated you have no information prior to Alexander and I was hoping that may have changed by now as I am stuck at that point and cant get beyond him. Any assistance would be dearly appreciated. Thankyou Robert Laramie
