Where is the Native American connection???

My grandfather is part Native American. His mother died when he was a small child. I am trying to find the Native American connection, but I seem to have hit a brick wall. My Grandfather is a Waldrop, but the Native American comes from his mother, a Hudson, and her mother is a Lasley, and her mother is an Armstrong. All of his ancestors ended up around Jack Co. Texas in the mid 1800s. I cannot seem to find ANYONE on the Dawes Roll or listed as anything but white on the census records. Lasley seemed the likely choice, because there are many on the Dawes Roll but none that i believe i am related to. Does anyone have any information that could help me. I can trace the Lasleys back to James M. Lasley born in 1844 in Illinois. Thanks in advance

The division of the areas were separated by the loyals and the other people.

There were many families who trekked to Kansas to get away and out of the war between the states.

Just thought you might take a look there too.

Lasley too is in my ancestry of Seminoles & Creeks that I know of.

The cherokee lasleys came from Carolina some as slaves. (I used to have this "clan" more identified, so I could separate them as they blended with the virginia Lasleys in western MO KS and OK). I have very good records for Fred and family to 1880 census. Fred was my grandfather's brother. Even on the 1900 Kansas City census both Leon and Bertie claim their father was born in Virginia. Eliza is also consistent. I believe this is the Louisa VA Lasley family and they are not cherokee. I would love to have a photo of Virginia.

You are correct with Bertie Lasley. you are missing one of her children, Virginia Lasley. The reason she is missing is because Bertie died shortly after her birth and Virginia was put in an orphange, as Frank Funke had only one leg and was ailing from cancer. I know this because Virginia is my grandmother and have first hand stories. You should be able to find the 1930 census in which virginia was 12 living in the orphanage.
My problem with the Lasley line is that we have photos of Bertie and according to family members she was atleast half Cherokee. There are several links to the Cherokee nation to the Lasleys, but the normal line found on Ancestry shows no link. It was common for full blooded Cherokees to take English names to avoid authorities.

Yes, I have been in touch with one of your cousins for a couple years now, however it wasn’t until very recently that she actually gave me information about Arthur and one of his daughters (her mother). At one point she told me that she was going to see if any one else in her family was interested in submitting info, but I never heard back about that. Outside of her mother, I only have names and DOB's for Arthurs other kids. I am very excited to be near completion on this project, as it has been many years in the works! Any help or info you can offer about your family is greatly appreciated!

LeanneOtero99,

Based on the last 8 years of research since I posted the original message to this thread. I am certain that Ashwaubomay is most probably the father of Samuel Lasley Jr.’s wife Abitagowinan. Samuel Jr. was the first born son of Samuel C. Lasley, and a lot of people have this father and son blurred together as being the same person. I have written in great detail about this in a book that I am writing (which is near completion). Also, since you are a descendant of Arthur Lasley (of whom I have written about in the book as well, in the chapter on his father, Henry Lasley) I am wondering if you would be interested in providing me with some additional info? For info on the book I am working on go to lasleybook.com - Thanks!

Israel Lasley (1823) child of Catherine Heidlebaugh and Peter E. Lasley is my great-great-grandfather. His son, Jacob Eby Lasley (b. 3/31/1861) was my great-grandfather, and his son, Floyd Vivian Lasley (b. 10/10/1892) is my grandfather.
My mother, cousin, and I compiled information for a family history book in 1992, and I could never find any information about Israel's family before him, so this information is great for me. This is my first time to really check anything since we compiled the initial information.
Floyd Lasley and my grandmother, Anna Mildred Nickell, raised their 20 children (2 of whom died in childhood) outside of Springfield, Colorado, and I still have 3 uncles who live there. Many of our relatives are buried in the Springfield cemetery.

Manoah Lasley

I have looked through many family trees that include a Manoah Lasley, and all too often there is a mis-match and conflation of two different Manoah Lasley(s). This has become so common that "One World Tree" has accepted the error as "fact".

(1)Manoah Lasley : was (1743-1836) son of James and Mary Lasley of Louisa Va. He was a Methodist minister and moved to Greensburg Ky @1790. He married Mary Ann Wash.

(2) Manoah Lasley: (1797-1834)was the youngest son of John ( Manoah #1's brother)and Frances Bickley Lasley. He, too was born in Louisa Va., but married Maria Mitchie and moved to Kanawha county Va. (now West Va.) where he died in 1834.

There were several other Manoah's, who are not being confused in family trees. Some trees have Manoah (2) married to Mary Wash. Some have mixed the birth and death dates. The above information is the correct facts.
Thank you
I have read this thread and I believe you are looking for James Lasley son of Manoah Lasley (1743-1836) and Mary Ann Wash Lasley (1759-1822) They both were born in Virginia and died in Green Co. kentucky.
James (1774 -1858) was born in Louisa Co. Virginia and moved with his parents to Green Co. Kentucky. Barren Co. is just to the south and I believe James owned land near Glasgow. But he was primarily from Greensburg. He was a hatter and a justice of the Peace there. Should you want more information please get intouch. I have a pretty good history on this Lasley family.

I am also related to your Lasley line. My great grandfather is the youngest of eleven children of William Alexander Lasley and Abigail Clark, his name is Henry Cleveland Lasley b. Oct 10, 1884, married Celesta Pearl Bruner, Sep 28, 1904 and had five children. The oldest Lillie Opal Lasley is my grandmother. I have a photo of the two and Cleve looks very European, very round faced and light features. My great grand mother is of Cherokee descent thru her mother Hannah Hicks of Tennessee. It was a very shameful event being of Indian blood back in the early 1900's, therefore they would not declare such a thing on a census "Government document" and if you admitted your heritage the government would take your children away from you and put them on the reservations, especially in IA, MO, OK..
My cousin Pauline is 86 yrs old, she will not admit any such thing, they were told as children that indians are one in the same as a black person..My Grandma Pearl was 95 before she told her great niece that she had indian blood and showed her a childs costume of Cherokee heritage, buried in the bottom of her closet, she was a warm friendly Grandma but was very ashamed of being indian.. and so it went. I am very interested in the photos you have and wondered if you would care to share with me. My e-mail is cosselmon@juno.com

Sincerely another Lasley Cousin.

Beth Ann Edmondson-Cosselmon

In researching the Conway Family, I ran across the following info that might be helpful to someone researching the Lasley Line:

Sarah Adeline Conway married Jacob Lansley in Randolph Co Indiana 8 Nov 1953
They had 5 children, all born in Randolph Co Indiana, as far as I can tell.

Charles Emos: b 11 Aug 1854
James A. b: 5 May 1858
George W. b: 27 Sept 1859
Dora B b 14 April 1868
Ida b:28 October 1869

Sarah A. Conway passed away on 5 Feb 1975 and presumably was buried in Randolph as well

Jacob Lasley remarried to a Mrs Mary Lamme dau of Andrew Lickens of Wayne Co. This union produced two children: the first born on 31 May 1877 and died in infancy. The second was John W. born on 16 Sept 1878. I do have info on his mother and father if anyone is interested--feel free to e-mail me.

Hope this helps someone researching this line!
Sandy

I am very interested in the Samuel P. Lasley family of LaRue Co., KY. In some way he and his family are connected with William Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Torrance.

In the 1850 Census of LaRue Co., KY, M. E. Terrance, 19, is listed in the household of Saml P. Lastley (sic), 47, physician.

In Benningfield's "LaRue County Kentucky Marriage Records 1843 - 1876", the following is found: "WILLIAM THOMPSON & MARY E. TORRENCE, 4 Nov. 1850. Thompson of age; Alvin Torrence, father of Miss Torrence gave consent by written cert. proven by oath of Samuel P. Lasley. Married 5 Nov. 1850 by Robert A. Abell." Robert Abell is a Catholic priest at St. Catherine's Church in New Haven, Nelson Co., KY.

I am hoping that someone could provide information of the Samuel P. Lasley family relationship with either William Thompson or Mary Elizabeth Torrance.

Thanks
