LAUN Queens NY photo - Can you identify anyone?

This picture was taken in 1939, at the home of Rose and Rudolph Kohlmann. At the time, they lived at 83-27 63rd Avenue, in Rego Park, Queens, NY.
We are told that on Sunday afternoons the Kohlmanns, all their children, and their friends gathered together. Lots of smiles, even as war clouds gathered over Europe and the Far East. In a few short years most of the men would be in the military.
Going from left to right:
Front row - Rose Ruppert, Josephine McNevin, Carol McNevin, Unknown, and Josephine Schultheiss McNevin.
2nd row - Rudolph Kohlmann, Arthur Kohlmann, Rose Schultheiss Kohlmann, and George McNevin.
3rd row - Unknown, Helen Kohlmann Laun, Dorothy Kohlmann, Unknown, Unknown, Unknown, and William Matchin.
Back row - Charles Kohlmann, Richard Laun, George Kohlmann, and Unknown.

Thanks to Theresa Ruppert Johnson for dating the picture, and identifying the location.

Our hope is that others will see this and be able to identify the unknowns.
My name is Christina Laun & I'm also looking into the family name. I'm very limited on info with my family name. The farthest I could go back to was early 1900's to Walter & Martha Laun, I don't know any dates on them but I have their sons name which would be my great grandpop. Please contact me via email at chrissy191979@yahoo.com with any info please. greatly appreciated. thanks

Looking for info on Peter Laun family. He arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Prussia/Germany in 1872 and had his own bakery in the city. He married Catherine (Maiden name unknown) in 1856. He would be my great grandfather. I have no information on his family prior to his arrival in Philadelphia. Thanks.

Gustav Laun

I am trying to establish whether these two Gustavs are the same person:

Georg Gustav LAUN, born 14 Jan 1840, christened 26 Jan 1840, confirmed 1854 all in Kelsterbach, Hesse-Darmstadt. These dates are all from German records.

Gustav LAUN, born 26 Mar 1840 in Germany based on U.S. census data. The next appearance he makes in U.S. public records is his enlistment in the Union Army on 01 Nov 1861. After being wounded at the Battle of Stone’s River, TN he returns to Louisville where he dies on 30 May 1897.

There is reason to believe that the U.S. Gustav also came from Kelsterbach. He may have entered the U.S. at New Orleans and may have lived for a time in Missouri before coming to Kentucky.

If this be the same person, I have no documentation for him at all between 1854 and 1861.

Any help is appreciated.
Well, Delores, you and I may be related.
Can you tell me more about you and how you happen to be into genealogy?

I started about four years ago. I had a starting point when I kept a brief background paper from a member of the family for many years.

It became intriguing when, in the paperwork I spoke of was a great grandfather listed as having died in 1932. I went down to the Gold Maier Library at UWM without any success in finding him and his mysterious death. I then pursued the probate files and discovered that he may have perhaps died in 1923. I knew that probate usually starts about a month after a person dies, so I hit the newspapers. In June of 1923, I found my great grandfather, Martin Klevenow listed on the front page of the newspaper as missing... the newspaper the next day spoke of how he was found dead off the side of a boat in Muskego Lake.

Well, that did it for me...

Barb

Thanks very much for your reply. My information indicates that our Gustav was born on 02 Mar 1840, but I won't rule out your Gustav just because of that. I have been unable to find his name in a passenger list, emigration list, etc. and have no info about him prior to his enlistment in the Federal army on 01 Nov 1861 in Louisville, KY.

The family story is that he came with either 2 or 3 brothers. One was John. The other(s) we don't know.

Gustav's occupation early on is a carpenter and later a cabinet-maker. His religious affiliation was German Evangelical.

George is a name that shows up in this family in succeeding generations, so that gives me some pause, and the family tradition is that we originated in Hesse-Darmstadt.

Thank you again for your help and any other observations you think may be relevant.

Please let me know if I may help you in some way from the Louisville, KY area.

Terry Laun

Hi Charles,
I'm researching the Launs of Louisville, KY. Nearly all of us are descended from Gustav Laun, a cabinetmaker born 26 Mar 1840. Place of birth: either Hesse-Darmstadt (U.S. Census 1870) or Prussia (U.S. Census 1880)? Family story is he was one of 3 or 4 brothers who came together and that they had lived near the Rhine river. Louisville evidence suggests one was named Johann who later moved to Philadelphia. Gustav first shows up here in 1862 when he joins the Union Army, a German-speaking company. I have no information as to his parents and have found nothing in passenger lists so far. Religious affiliation in Louisville was Evangelical. I would value any assistance and would be happy to share what I have with others!

Terry Laun

LAUN, Worms, Rhinehessen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany

I am researching Luthran (Evangelischer) church records in Worms, Rhinehessen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany looking at LAUNs among other names. At this point I have names between 1690 and 1875.

I will check my records for anyone who is looking for LAUNs from this area.

The family mostly had small farms, raised grapes and fruit trees and were "Fuhrmann" which translates as wagoneer. This would be someone who had a team of draft animals and a wagon and hauled freight or did other work for people who did not have draft animals. It was often a way that people with a small farm supplemented their income.

I am researching LAUNs from Worms, Hesse-Kassel, Germany. From family history I believe the family was in Worms going back to the 1600's. I am begining to look at church records.

The family were fishermen on the Rhine so links to other villages on the river are possible.

I don't recognize those names but I am researching a LAUN line from Konhalden, Jagstkreis, Wuerttemberg around the 1820's and 1830's. Maybe we have some connections?
Mark
