Stella,

The Y-DNA test will not really tell you if you are Scottish or not. What it will tell you is who is related that have already tested. Since Laurence is a Clan surname, I recommend that you test in the Clan MacLaren Surname DNA Project. You can join the Lawrence Surname DNA Project as an additional project at no extra cost once you place the order. To join us, go to
http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=T20437
and place the order. The test I recommend is the 67-marker test.

Yours aye,

Bob McLaren
Genealogist, Clan MacLaren Society (based in Scotland)
Chairman, Genealogy Committee, Clan MacLaren Society of North America
Administrator, Clan MacLaren Surname DNA Project (Worldwide)

I see that you are of Scottish descent. Have you considered doing a DNA test? DNA testing is proving to be a great tool in our genealogical research. Lawrence/Laurence is one of Clan MacLarens surnames and we have some in our DNA project (which is at Family Tree DNA). If you would like to learn more, or have questions about the testing or cost, please contact me a bobmclaren@earthlink.net.

Yours aye,

Bob McLaren
Genealogist, Clan MacLaren Society (based in Scotland)
Chairman, Genealogy Committee, Clan MacLaren Society of North America
Administrator, Clan MacLaren Surname DNA Project (Worlwide)

Father Frank Lorence- Born in Bohemia
Mother Anna Lorence- Born in Bohemia

Many siblings, Mary, Theresia, Julia, Frank etc are on my tree.

I am trying to find out more about the mother Anna- hopefully her maiden name so I can continue research. I know Frank listed himself as a widow in 1895.

Christina was my grandmothers maternal mother. She died tragically young when my Grandmother was an infant.

Due to the malicious nature of her spouse, Oscar, all records of her were deliberately removed from our family. We wish to correct this and return her to her rightful place in our history.

Thank you for any help you can offer. My family tree is visible if you think you are a match or wish to know more.
Hello. I realize this is quite a few years after your message concerning Sara Laurence and Israel Rondeau was posted, but I would be very interested in receiving or hearing of any information you may have on them as they were my great great-gradparents too. I a little old to start taking an interest in my genealogy but I would like to have this information for my children and grandchildren. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. I was raised in Morinville and knew nothing of my great or great great grandparents. I was told in later years that my great-grandmother, Emilia-Delina Rondeau, was a "half-breed" "Blackfoot" which is impossible because she and her parents were born in Quebec. I saw on one site that Sara was Iroqouis but haven't been able to find any evidence in her lineage to prove this.. I have seen the picture of Sara on Ancestry.com and she appears to be native. Unfortunately my grandmother never talked about her heritage, and all I ever heard from my mother were, for the most part, falsehoods. I hope this get to you.

Sarah Laurence Rondeau was my great-great grandmother. She was charged with practicing medicine without a licence. It eventually went to the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories (as Alberta was not a province yet). I have a copy of the court papers. You may find it by researching Rex v. Rondeau as reported in the Law Reports of the NWT. It was reported in the 1903 edition of Canadian Criminal cases.
As well, she lost three of her children (within two weeks) during the great flu. My mother tells me stories of her riding off during snow storms to tend to ill people.
She was also known for her large garden.

there really no reason for the change. it was just a misundderstanding. I asked on cousin why he used W instead of U, and he said "It was the American spelling!" I checked several documents especially a baptismal record of the daughter of my great grand father. and he signed it with a U.
CLEMENT ANTHONY LAURENCE

Most of us French Laurences trace our roots back to Noel Laurence, arrived in Quebec about 1650. He and all the other French settlers of that time were from western France, Normandy, Brittany, etc. After the French and Indian wars of 1730, no new French came to North America until the 19th century. If your great grandfather was born in Menton, he was one of those arriving in the 19th century.

French has no "w" in the language. Therefore, Laurence is always spelled without the w in French. However, there are many descendants of Noel Laurence in Montana and in western Canada who spell their name as "Larance", dropping both the u and the w.

Laurence is a very old name in Europe; there are versions of it in every European country. For example, Larson in Sweden, MacLaurin in Scotland. They may all be related.

Neal Laurance
Hi -

My research indicates that the surname started out as Laurence and then changed to Lawrence in some parts of the US. My branch of the family came from France (Menton sounds familiar, definitely Normandy, 1650s) and emigrated to the Quebec area. It is possible that the French started as L'Orange or some variant. Anyhow, my ancestors did not change the spelling and stuck with the French sounding Laurence upon moving to Montana.

Email me at leslie.hill9@verizon.net if you'd like to share trees, etc.

Cheers,
Leslie

My name is Clement anthony laurence. spelt with 'u' some of our family spell it with a'w' claiming that is the way our ancesters spelt it. I found that nt great grand father sprlt it with a 'u'.I found his signatur on his daughter's baptismal recrd. also my grandfather spelt with a'u' but his sons woulden't listten to him. My great grand father was born in Menton, Monaco,Franxe. I believe his father's name was Andrew. If anyone has traced their laurence back to him or have any information about the Laurenes in France, I would lov tohear from them.

Bonnie, I have some info on Laurence fam. I was married to L.E.the 4th (Buddy, who is now dead) and have one daughter. My info says that they came from NYC, and I. Moses Laurence of NYC was the oldest known ancestor. I have the family bible from Elgin but someone tore out the birth, marriage, and death records. Do you know who has them? LE 3rd's wife told me the family came from Italy. I feel like they probably came from the Netherlands because (1) most New Yorkers at that time were from Hollard; and (2) the Dutch people are usually very tall. My ex and his 2 brothers were all between 6'1" and 6'4" tall which is a Dutch characteristic. Unfortunately, all my research is in storage as we are leaving for another country in a few days. However, I would love to hear from you. Ann Payne,at annpayne42@gmail.com.

Has a male Laurence from this line had their DNA tested. Their is a Laurence surname group in the FamilyTreeDNA project, and two Lawrence members have tested who descend from Joab Lawrence of Morgan Co., Alabama.

There is a DNA testing sale through the end of December, and the saving are significant.

http://lawrence-ons.org/DNA.html
