Jean-Baptiste married my great great grandmother's sister (Louis Corriveau and Nathalie Beaudet). Jean Baptiste and Dina moved from Stukely Quebec to Cohoes NY in about 1873 to help Nathalie out after her husband Louis was killed. In my search to find out information about Louis and Nathalie I looked at the Lavigne family. I am not a paid member of Ancestry so I will give you my personal information so we can exchange information and if you would be so kind to send me yours. It will be interesting to see where you fit into my outline and if I was correct on some of the familes .

Thanks

Gary F Curry
65 Pollock Ave
Pittsfield MA 01201
413-443-6346
gfcurry@verizon.net

LaVigne, The Vines

From what I have been able to research, the name LaVigne translates from French into "the vines." The family, I was told by a grower in France, originated in the Burgundy (Bourgogne) region of France. The name used to be uncommon, but today there are many LaVignes running around France, some still growing grapes and making wine (Honor LaVigne, Burgundy).

My branch left during the time of the Huguenots and fled to Sweden where the name was changed to Laf vin. It was changed back to LaVigne when they came to Connecticut in the late 1800s.

I wish I had as much luck finding my CURRENT LaVigne relatives!
According to Wikipedia*, "sponsors" is one of the translations of le parrain (masculine) & la marraine (feminine); another is godparent
In the context of a Catholic baptism it is my understanding that a more precise translation
would be "godfather" and "godmother"

c.f.
http://french.about.com/od/vocabulary/g/parrain.htm
un parrain
By Laura K.
Hi Katina,

This is all of the text from Henriette Lavigne's baptism record.
----

(The sponsors were Joseph Boudreau and Marie Ache (Hache), widow of William Morisson and the infants aunt.)

***Now that you have the complete text of that baptism with stated relationships you'll be able to find a good gedcom online. You can trace Henriette's mom..her dad is another story. Unfortunately her parents aren't on her marriage record. I don't recall anything in the baptisms of her children that stood out. I think I did come across some marriage dispensations in later generations though. I don't recall who they were :( Dispensations become important to prove relationships sometimes.
--------
On to Electrius Oakes...According to the mortality schedule of the 1871 Canadian census of St. Francis, N.B. Electrous Ockes (sic) passed away in September at the age of 80(that would be of 1870) of "gravil". That would be kidney stones. St-Francois-Xavier Parish has a baptism record dated September 8th 1870 for Alexis Hooks (sic) (just one of the many variations of the name) age 84. I'm thinking the priest neglected to write the death act. Every once in a while one finds a baptism and death one under the other for the same person.
------
On to Alexandre Aleman...I found at least 2 errors in his work for the very early generations. I don't recall much but one of the errors was in a family unrelated to me and the other error I recall was my family. I knew the latter to be an error because I have the records. There were probably more. The records are available so I think he didn't do the leg-work or do it carefully. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in his work. As for Natouk..I got the work from Mr. Bolier's widow many years ago. What Alexandre wrote was not what I received from Mr. Boilier's widow.

Hope this helps.
"The baptism in no way shape or form is proof of her Mother's bloodline"
That's correct. Only DNA can speak to the blood-line.

A baby was born and baptized the same day of the legimate marriage of Jean & Modeste Lavigne in Bathurst
Twenty odd years later she married Electrious. There isn't a reasonable alternative.

"The DNA record is one Possible piece of information that was floating about online which you
originally dismissed as GARBAGE"

I dismissed as garbage Bolyer's assertion that a woman born in Quebec (an Indian) was Electrious' wife.

Did Henriette's matrilineal line continue to Henry Flynn? I have no idea. That's genealogy not genetics

Some matrilineal genetic line went to Henry Flynn. That line has no Indian in it.

The facts are:
1) A baptism record for Henriette.
2) The results of an MtDNA test for Henry Flynn, Jr. (unless it's fabricated, I suppose)

The baptism record is acceptable "proof" (pretty much as near as genealogy
can get it) that Henriette's mother was not an Indian. It is the best evidence available.
This isn't my opinion, this is the way genealogy works. Best evidence.

The MtDNA results are unequivocal (unless the laboratory made a mistake or Henry
gave the lab a mouth swab from somebody else).
Henry's GENETIC matrilineal ancestry is European.
Nobody in Henry's genetic matrilineal ancestry has had Indian DNA. This is the way
genetics works

As I said earlier: "if the female ancestry of Henry,Jr is correct, then the absence of
Indian DNA in his MTDNA test results (Haplogroup H - European) PROVES unequivocally
that Henriette Lavigne (AND all the other mothers) did NOT have a mother with ANY
Indian DNA"

To restate:
If Henry Flynn's matrilineal lineage properly traces to Henriette, then it is scientifically
impossible that Henriette was an Indian or that her matrilineal ancestry is Indian.
No Indian woman contributed DNA to Henry Ryan's genetic line. Either before Henriette or after.

If there is a flaw, it is the _genealogy_ of Henry Flynn's ancestry.
The _genetic_ ancestry is clear. No Indians
Maybe Henry's genealogy is wrong. If Henry's genealogy is wrong, if he doesn't
ACTUALLY trace back to Henriette then his DNA says nothing about Henriette.

1) "Good" genealogy (which in this case rests upon the Catholic Church) says that Henriette did not have an
Indian mother
2) MtDNA says that Henry has no Indian genetic ancestry.
The baptism in no way shape or form is proof of her Mother's bloodline. The DNA record is one Possible piece of information that was floating about online which you originally dismissed as GARBAGE. Again, not enough info to conclude either way regardless how many replies you post and delete. There's simply not enough evidence to make your opinions or mine fact. Good hunches, probablies, etc are NOT good genealogy.

Birth records or baptism?
I still see no proof of her Mother's bloodline. The DNA is not confirmed either. So far lots of puzzle pieces. No proof, just a lot of guessing and opinion and I prefer to wait for a conclusion based upon facts. You have a very strong opinion and speculation but that's not enough to claim proof.

My husband's cousin (all descended through Electrius Oakes' daughter, Barbe) and the Collins line intermarried in our generation here in Alberta: Paulette Girard m. Terry Collins in 1967. It's a small world!

FIRST GENERATION

1. Electrius "Lectus" Oakes was born between 1790 and 1792 in Exeter, Maine. He served in the military in 1812. He resided Oakes Farm, on the west side of Glazier Lake in Maine.

He was married to Marie Henriette Lavigne (daughter of Jean Baptiste Lavigne and Marie Modeste Hache) on August 17, 1818 in Bathurst, Gloucester County, New Brunswick.
Certainly a lot to sift through, thank you for your input.

There are several conflicting records of a Henriette Lavigne born in 1800. There are also conflicting records of another birth place in Nova Scotia. Quite an interesting task at hand before certainty either way.

Also sorting through this DNA information:

PERRINE BOURG/BOURQUE mtDNA Results for Henry Mayo Flynn, Jr. Maternal Ancestor: Perrine Bourg/Bourque Test result: Haplogroup H - European Henry 's mtDNA Results: HVR1 126C HVR2 152C 263G 309.1C 309.2C 315.C Henry's Maternal Line 13. I looked up "baptisee sous condition" on-line and
found the following which seems both comprehensive and relevant:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Conditional Baptism
Posted on 21 September 2010
by M.C. Moran
While going through RC parish registers in search of your Catholic ancestors, you may come
across the phrase “baptized conditionally” or “baptized sub conditione,” or, in French, "baptisé(e)
sous condition."
What did the padre mean, you may wonder, by this seemingly cryptic communication?

What the priest meant, basically, was that he had performed the baptism with words to the effect of,
"If you are not already baptized, I baptize you."

Why the conditional "if, with its gesture toward the possibility that a baptism had already been performed?
Well, I’m no theologian, but as far as I understand it, it goes something like this:
According to Catholic doctrine, there is only one baptism, which means that there is no such thing as
a valid second baptism or re-baptism. However, there was (and still is, as best I make out) some question
as to whether a baptism performed by anyone other than a duly ordained Catholic priest actually counted
[counts] as a baptism. So when a Catholic priest was asked to baptize someone who had maybe already
been baptized, given the question surrounding the validity of that possible first baptism (which may or
may not have been a baptism at all, from the RC perspective), the conditional baptism was a way of
hedging one’s bets.
For genealogical purposes, the two most frequent situations where you’ll encounter a conditional
baptism are:
1. the case of an infant who had been baptized at home by a (Catholic) family member as an emergency
measure (because the infant was gravely ill, and at risk of dying, and there was no priest around to
perform the baptism); and
2. the case of an adult convert to Roman Catholicism who had previously been baptized by a Protestant
clergyman.
A third situation would be that of an infant foundling (in French, un[e] enfant trouvé[e]), about whom there
was incomplete information concerning a possible baptism.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You might find it useful to pursue this further, dunno

Herb

Hello Randy, I went to Vankleek Hill 2 months ago. Searched the protestant cemetary looking for my other family , "the Bell's" After I came home I found there were Lavigne's living there as well. Now I wish I had visitef the cemetary across the road Those Lavigne's came from the Nicolet, Terrabonne and Jolliette area in Quebec. My Lavigne's come from these areas as well but I don't recognize any of your names. Wish I could be more of a help to you. Good Luck on your search.
