----- Original Message -----
From: John Pattillo
To: rosannemartin@peoplepc.com or WHOMEVER READS THIS POSTING
Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2012 1:57 PM
Subject: Laws line from Maryland to William Laws and his son, David Laws, Dr. (dob 1755) who married Martha Mitchell

In your posting on 12 December 2008 in Rootsweb Archivers on the Laws family, you seem to have the following sequence of the laws from the original John Lawe, Laws who was born in Billingham, Durham, England to David, Dr. mentioned above:

"I have some differences in the order of the Laws family tree starting
with David Jr. b. 1784. I have him married to Elizabeth Miller on 4 30 1811
and then show 2 sons.
> Before that I have:
> David Sr. married to Martha Mitchell
> William Laws married Jane Unknown
> John Laws married to Elizabeth Unknown
> John Laws married to Sara Betts Nelson
> Unknown Laws married to Katherine Unknown"

I am presuming your listing would agree with my supposition that David Sr's line comes from England via Maryland for tne names Jane, Elizabeth and Sara Betts Nelson match some of what I have found coming from the JOhn Lawe, Laws mentioned above.

What I have not been able to do, however, is to follow the generations from the original John from England down to and including the person that you list as David Sr.'s father,William whereas an article in the Wilkewsboro genological library does list a "John Laws" as David's father. It would seem, however that more time and more names would have occurred from even the birth of the son of the original John Lawe, Laws, ie; JOhn, Jr. and his grandson, JOhn II (from 1650 to David's birth in
1755)

My information does not have one of the earlier Laws' wife as Elizabeth but does have a Katherine Boslman as the wife of a John Laws and a Nelson as the wife of another Laws and a Sarah as the wife of another.

What I don't have is which JOHN LAWE LAWS descent left Maryland and would up in Halifax, Va and after that in Wilkesboro, N.C.

If you have the details of the births, marriages and deaths of your above listings, I would be deeply indebted if you would share t hem with me. you can reply to my email address above

Regards....

John Pattillo
johnpatti@cfl.rr.com

Dear Famousmorning:

I really appreciate your help in altering me to the possibility of there being another line of ancestry to the David Laws (dob 1755 Halifax, Va)to his father (William?)other than (1) from Scotland (James dob 1669, son William dob 1690, both Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his son, William dob_1718+-Henrico County, Va and (2) the line from Billingham, England via Maryland.

I have tried to follow your line thru Maryland from John Laws as well as the line in The Golden lyon site)but never found when and which descendent left Maryland for Virginia down to the William whom I believe is also the name of Our David's father.

Not only would I but my wife would be eternally grateful to you if you would direct me from the WRONG LAW'S LINE AND AWAY TO THE RIGHT LAW'S LINE. THEN I WOULD NOT BE GREETED EACH DAY WITH "HAVE YOU COMPLETED MY COLONIAL DAMES APPLICATION?

Sincerely
John Pattillo

Dear Famous Morning: Thank you, I think, for your last postings about two lines of the Law(S) family, one originating in Scotland (Kemnay, aberdeenshire scotland and the other (apparently yours) originating in England, then to Mary and finally(?) in Virginia, all about with my BIG question about "from which line commeth David Laws, dob 1755 in Halifax,Va, then Wilkes, N.C." (my wife's patriot for DAR and then onward to Missouri.
I Spent 4-5 years getting to David of Wilkes and starting about 2 years ago, seeking "onwward" and "upwards" from David attempting to find an heir that would qualify her for Colonial Dames.

In this last search withthe assitance of an Edward Laws, an engineering professor in Athens Ga (U of Ga) and his cousin Sean in Alabama, went on back to a James Law(S) dob 1669 Kemany, Aberdeenshire Scotland thru his son, William Dob 1690 to immigrating thru West Indies to Va, then fom this also called william to my David(?).

If you are correct and my David comes from the other Law(s) from England, could you please send me your chart of that branch from England to Maryland to Virginia and then to David in Wilks,NC and any information that would help me prove this linse. If you can do t hat I would be eternally grateful as I don't believe I have the strength, energy or patience to continue.

In my earlier research upwards from David, I did run accross the Law(S) from England to Maryland but abonded that chain when I got conneccted with Edward and Sean whose line seemed much more plausible, particurally when I found several indications (but not all)that indicated David was a son of the second William menitoned above

Can you be kind to a weary 80+ year old that needs help?!

I can be reached at "johnpatti@cfl.rr.com

I am copying Edward and Sean for the information. Their line as been authenticate up the present, parimarily in Ga.
but they broke off from a brother of the 2nd William mentioned above so cannot help me.

cc: sean.law@va.alabama.gov
edlaw@engr.uga.edu
I am related to both Laws family. James Law(s) lineage came from Scotland and settled in Virginia. The other lineage from England and settled in Maryland then Virginia. I was unable to located David PR (Pig River)Laws in the James Laws line. A John Laws from the Maryland lineage is also known to be from Pig River, Va also. Therefore it has been assumed that David Laws is of that lineage. John Laws also served in the Revolutionary War. Hope this has helped.
INITIALLY, I DETERMINED THAT DAVID LAWS WAS MY WIFE'S PATRIOT AND WAS ABLE TO TRACE HER ANCESTRY BACK TO HIM.

AFTER THAT WAS COMPLETED AND USING DAVID LAWS AS THE STARTING POINT, I BEGAN A SEARCH TO ATTEMPT TO QUALIFY HER FOR MEMBERSHIP IN COLONIAL DAMES.In doing that I started with a JAMES LAW, BORN APPROX 1669 IN KEMNAY
ABERDEENSHIRE SCOTLAND WHO HAD A SON, WILLIAM LAW (WILLIAM no 1) DOB 1690 ALSO IN KEMNAY SCOTLAND AND WHO IMMIGRATGED TO THE US IN 1698 WITH HIS FATHER, JAMES LAW AT THE AGE OF 8. WILLIAM #1 LATER MARRIED AN ELIZABETH LITTLEBERRY IN 1715 IN VIRGINIA AND THEY HAD A SON ALSO NAMED WILLIAM (WILLIAM no 2)DOB IN 1718IN VIRGINIA.JAMES DIED IN VIRGINIA IN 1702 AND WILLIAM NO 1 DIED IN 1733 IN HENRICO CTY VIRGINIA. WILLIAM no 2 CHANGED THE FAMILY'S NAME FROM "LAW" TO LAWS. WILLIAM #2 MARRIED A MARY GLASS IN 1748 AND THEY HAD A SON, DAVID WHO WAS BORN IN 1755 IN HALIFAX, HALIFAX COUNTY VA, AMONG OTHER SONS AND DAUGHTERS WILLIAM no 2, HIS WIFE, MARY GLASS AND THEIR SON, DAVID (and I the rest of their children), MOVED TO WILKES COUNTY (WILKESBORO) NORTH CAROLINA SOMETIME AFTER DAVID'S BIRTH IN 1755. DAVID AND HIS FATHER, WILLIAM no 2 BOTH SERVED IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND AS NOTED ABOVE I USED DAVID AS MY WIFE'S PATRIOT TO GET HER IN DAR.

THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THE ABOVE IS THAT CERTAIN FAMILY TREES SHOW DAVID AS THE SON OF WILLIAM #2 AND MARY GLASS AND SOME DO NOT LIST DAVID AS THE SON OF WILLIAM #2 AND MARY GLASS, ANYONE WHO COULD ASSIST ME IN CONFIRMING THIS RELATIONAHIP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. She tracked down my mom with help of a PI and my mother said no contact. So she moved on to siblings. Three fell for her bull, I did not. She used this site to track down individuals.

Thanks for ther reply.yes, you are on the right track IF
WELCOME WILLIAM LAWS IS THE SAME PERSON AS WILLIAM WELCOME LAWS (I have seen it used both ways)AND IF HE WAS A BROTHER OF DAVID LAWS (dob 1755 in Halifax County, Va) whose father and mother were also William Laws and Mary Glass and his grandparents were William LAW (dob 1690 in Kimnay, Aberdeenshire Scotland and Elizabeth Littleberry (Lawson?)
- THIS WILLIAM CHANGED THE FAMILY NAME FROM LAW TO LAWS AFTER ARRIVING IN AMERICA (VA)IN 1698 and Elizabeth Littleberry Lawson?).

I have been working up (backwards?) from a DAVID LAWS who was my wife's patriot for DAR and went back to start with a JAMES LAW (dob abt 1669 also in Kimnay, Scotland) who had a son, WILLIAM LAW, dob 1690 (The same Williams mentioned above) who immigrated with his parents to America in 1698 when he was eight (8) years old, THEN ON DOWN TO ANOTHER WILLIAM (dob 1718 mentioned above)WHO MARRIED MARY GLASS ANDI HOPE HE AND MARY GLASS HAD AT LEAST TWO SONS, NAMELY WELCOME WILLIAM LAWS AND DAVID LAWS,et al

If my above stated assumptions are correct (and I can prove them) AND AT LEAST ONE OF THE WILLIAMS (Other than WELCOME WILLIAM) did something to further the cause of the Colonists, then my wife's application to Colonial Dames
might(?) be approved.

Any thing you can confirm the above stated facts (with evidence) will help me immensely! Grandparents were William Laws and Elizabeth Littleberry Lawson and Christopher Glass. Milly Lowe's parents were William Lowe and Ann Davis. Grandparents were William Lowe and Temperance Pickett and William Davis and Elizabeth Tayman. Am I on right track?

The following is a followup reply or, if applicable, open a new thread with
the following title: WAS DAVID LAWS DOB 1755 THE SON OF WILLIAM LAWS AND
MARY GLASS ?
IN my research of the Laws family, I was able to trace my wifes
family upwards to David Laws dob 1755 Halifax County, Va as her patriot that
quailified her for DAR. I am now trying to continue upwards from David to
an ancestor that did something that would qualify my wife for membership in
Colonial Dames.

In doing that I started with a JAMES LAW, BORN APPROX 1669 IN KEMNAY
ABERDEENSHIRE SCOTLAND WHO HAD A SON, WILLIAM LAW (WILLIAM no 1 DOB 1690
ALSO IN KEMNAY SCOTLAND AND WHO IMMIGRATGED TO US IN 1698 WITH H IS PARENTS
AT THE AGE OF 8. HE LATER MARRIED AN ELIZABETH LITTLEBERRY IN 1715 IN
VIRGINIA AND THEY HAD A SON ALSO NAMED WILLIAM (WILLIAM no 2)BORN IN 1718
IN VIRGINIA WHO (WILLIAM NO 1)DIED IN 1733. WILLIAM no 2 CHANGED HIS NAME TO
LAWS. AND MARRIED A MARY GLASS IN 1748 AND THEY HAD A SON, DAVID, AMONG
OTHER SONS AND DAUGHTERS BORN 1N 1755 IN HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA. WILLIAM
no 2, HIS WIFE, MARY GLASS AND THEIR SON, DAVID (and I assume all of the
rest of their children), MOVED TO WILKES COUNTY (WILKESBORO) NORTH CAROLINA
SOMETIME AFTER DAVID'S BIRTH IN 1755, DAVID AND I THINK HIS FATHER, WILLIAM
no 2 WHO BOTH SERVED IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND I USED DAVID AS MY
WIFE'S PATRIOT TO GET HER IN DAR.

THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS THAT I FIND A NUMBER OF FAMILY TREES, ETC. THAT
SHOW DAVID AS THE SON OF WILLIAM no 2 AND MARY GLASS BUT ALSO FAMILY TREES
THAT DO NOT SHOW DAVID AS THE SON OF WILLIAM no 2 AND MARY GLASS.

CAN YOU HELP ME?

JOHN PATTILLO

johnpatti@cfl.rr.com

----- Original Message -----

Have a Moses Laws in NC in late 1700s and the DNA has connected us to an Alexander Law in Scotland. My Moses showed up in Onslow in 1789 and then went to Onslow in 1795 and IL in 1819. Would really like to share some information with you.

I have used the family name "Laws" to get my wife, into DAR with a David Laws (dob 1755 in Halifax, Halifax Cty, Va) as her Patriot. I am now trying to get her in to Colonial Dames using the same family name of LAWS. !

I believe the laws lines continues beyond David but have a gap between David and his father whom I believe to be either WILLIAM LAWS BUT I am not sue thus this thread

I have actully skipped upwards and started at a James Law(s) who was born in Kenmay Scotland in 1669 and who had a son, William (dob 1690) who married a Elizabeth Littleberry who was born in 1694 and died in 1733.I believe William and Elizabeth immigrated to Bristol Parish, Henrico, Va and Their son, also a Wlliam, was born in 1718 (dod1780) who married a Mary Glass who was born in 1728 and who died ub 1781. I do have information from Ancestry. com that a child name DAVID resulted from that marriage which would bridge that gap but I also have info that William and Mary Glass may or may not have had a son named DAVID AND ON AND ON. IF YOU CAN HELP ME TIE WILLIAMS AND MARY GLASS TO DAVID, I WOULD HAVE MY LINEAGE COMPLETE. CAN YOU HELP!!!

OF COURSE I STILL NEED TO FIND ONE OF THOSE HEIRS NORTH OF DAVID DID SOMETHING OUTSTANDING FOR THE COLONIALS BUT HAVEN'T STARTED LOOKING FOR THAT YET If you have any info in this regard, I would also appreciate your help.

THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME....
Really wish someone from the Meshack line would have a DNA test done. I have a Moses Laws who is in Surry County, NC around 1788 and then marries Hester Laws in Onslow County in 1795. I believe that she is the daughter of Wilson Laws who shows up in Onslow County around 1785. With a DNA test we have connected Moses' line with an Alexander Law from Scotland. The DNA testing would go a long way to sorting out the various Laws lines in MA, MD, VA and NC.

Ment to add this also.
Most folks looking in 1800's in NC should not forget they really need to be checking in VA. for their ancestors ,there were tons of the laws who came down from Massachusetts as well, your digging needs to NOT just stay in NC.
If you go to Google Books and just type in Laws Family you may be quite surprised, and don't just wash anything under the rug, check and re-check cause thay din't all just start in NC

Laws and Caladona Oaks.

Hi Glenys,
Thank you for replying to my post. Yes we do share a common ancestor! James brother Henry was my Harry/Henry jr. father.
I was able to finally figure out Henry's Jr. family recently with some help. Henry and his brother William were home children sent to Canada in 1897.
Would love to hear from you.
Kim

Hi Jennifer

I am the youngest daughter of Reginald E Laws; he died in Feb 1966 from lung cancer. I was 3 years old. Bryan, Dawn and Winni are my half siblings. I know Winni died in Australia in the 70s I think. I can remember visiting Bryan in Gravesend I think when I was about 7. Do you have a sister named Sherri?
If you ever read this you can contact me at leeniperrier@hotmail.com

Hi, I think that we share some information about the Lawes family. My grandfather was James Lawes born in Norwich in 1860. His Grandfather was William Lawes who married Jane Bishop.
If you would like to look at my tree which is under ANQ and let me know what you think I would be happy to hear from you.
Very Best wishes, Glenys
