I'm researching a Lena Lawther. She was most likely born in the 1880s and died sometime in the 1900s. I know she married Patrick Michael Barry and they had three children, Johnny, Mary Lois and Nellie but that's about all I know. Would like to know more, especially about Lena.

A follow up from my previous reply:

John Hood Lawther's grandfather was James Lawther (1789-1865), born in Ireland. He came to the US about 1820. My family lore indicates that as many as 11 Lawther siblings came from Ireland at the same time. I can not find any information to substantiate this; would any of the Lawther ancestors you are researching fit this timeframe?

Re: Lawther Genealogy

Louise,

There are at least two "family lines" of Lawthers that have lived in Carroll County. Although they may be related to each other, I currently do not have confirmation.

The one I am most familiar with is John H. Lawther (1824-1901) who lived in Fox Township. He had 6 children, one of which was Armstrong (1866-1930): of his 5 children, one was John Dobson Lawther (1899-1996)a pioneering college (Penn State) basketball coach.

If John H. Lawther's middle name was Hood, which I am about 95% convinced is true, then John was raised on a farm in Kittanning, PA (Armstrong county). Of his 6 brothers and sisters, one was Robert Ralston (1836-1911)who became a Colonel in the Confederate army during the Civil War and settled in Dallas after the war; and James Thompson (1832-aft 1900), my great grandfather, who stayed on the farm in Kittanning.

If you would like additional information, please contact me at lawther@mail.ucf.edu. I would very much like to learn more about your research

While not a Lawther descendant, my maternal grandfather, Robert Marcus Stith (son of Fannie Louisa Hoopes/Charles A. Stith) was the only first cousin of Col. Robert R. Lawther=Ellen Eliza Hoopes offspring on the Hoopes side. According to photos/notes in the Hoopes family photo album, Freddie and Annie Lawther were adopted daughters of Col. Lawther and his wife, Ellen, as they had lost several other children (Marion, Maud, Pearl, Robert., Jr) between 1860 and 1874. Their oldest son was Henry Preston, born in Muscatine, IA (1/27/1859), Joseph Earl (b. Galveston,TX, 2/1/1876), and the three youngest sons, William James (12/12/1878), Raymond Ralston (9/21/1880), and Paul Warner (2/1/1882), were born after the family relocated from Galveston to Brenham, TX, in about 1877. All five brothers were mentioned in the will of their aunt, Rebecca Hoopes, probated in October 1926. Both Robert R. Lawther and my g2grandfather, Richard M. Stith, served in the Missouri State Guard and later in the CSA.

My grandfather was Leroy Lott, however, I know that he was adopted by Kathrine and Rhiney Berenhardt (sp) in Flint, Michigan. His birth mother was my grandma Elsie. I don't know her last name at this moment. I have a call in to my grandmother Dorothy (Leroy's wife) and my mom. As soon as they get back with me I will be able to give you more info. Hope you see this, it was a year ago that you posted the message. I just went back to this site recently.

Feel free to email me @ kimwelsh@cox.net

KW

Martha,

Please contact me at either rstithbarnes@hotmail.com (home) or rbarne@puget.com, (work) for additional information on the Lawther-Hoopes connection. Answers to your queries. Yes, Joseph J. Hoopes is your ancestor. Amanda McGinnis Hoopes was his wife. Their children were, in birth order, Joseph Linn Hoopes (known as J. Linn Hoopes), Ellen Eliza Hoopes, Fanny Louisa Hoopes (my ggrandmother) and Rebecca Hoopes. I have excellent photos of all and happy to share. On the Lawther side my photos are limited to Ellen, Robert R. Lawther, a photo of Freddie and Annie Lawther, Pearl, and a u/i baby boy (Blessing & Co. 174 Tremont, Galveston) probably Joseph Earl as he was the only one who was born in Galveston. On the Hoopes side I have photos of Joseph J, Amanda, J. Linn,(& wife & child), Ellen Eliza, Fannie Louisa, and Rebecca. Also have photos of a number of related Hoopes from the Muscatine, IA. area from about 1860+ to 1880. As for the military photos I could identify Robert Lawther, Richard Marcus Stith and Charles Augustus Stith, all of whom served in the CSA. Others in the Hoopes line served in the Union Army, as far as I know. Robert Lawther and J. Linn Hoopes were in business together in Galveston by 1870. Robert Lawther was apparently in business in Galveston much earlier. In the Galveston Daily News from Sunday, April 1, 1866, there is an advertisement for Lawther & Garey, Wholesale Grocers and Liquors. The same ad runs for a least a month or more. Robert Lawther is listed in the Galveston City directories from 1870 until 1876-77. Be happy to answer your Hoopes inquiries as best I can by e-mail, snailmail or whatever.

1910 Census records for Middlesex county, Massachucestts indicate that Samuel W. Lawthers was born about 1881. He married Anne (Annie) Costello about 1908. Samuel was born in Ireland, his Father in Scotland and mother in England. He immigrated about 1898 and was a naturalized citizen of the USA. He may have died prior to 1914. When born, my mother was given the middle name, Lawthers, in honor of her Aunt's husband, Sam Lawthers. Does anyone have information on Sam ?

Thank you,

Janice

Thanks for the additional info Kathy...I didn't have Uncle Orville's DOB before so I've added 1906 to my records.

Sorry to hear that there has been no additional contact with Kim Lawther.

Here's a bit of information I may not have shared with you before.

For myself I have one son by a prior marriage to Carolyn Marie Bennett...we were married 5/09/1968, had one son, Christopher Gordon Turner, born 9/27/1976, and we were divorced 5/10/1983. Christopher married Jami Beth Ring 6/29/2002 and they are now living in Europe...Paris, France actually...moved there from Heidelberg, Germany where they had lived for the previous year and a half. Christopher works for Abbott Laboratories, same company I work for, is a manager in the Financial Planning and Analysis area covering Central and Eastern Europe operations of Abbott. Christopher and Jami have no children...yet! I remarried in 1985. 11/03/1985. Married Helen J. Palko, a divorcee with one son, Chad Gaub. Chad was born 12/11/1949, is a schoolteacher in the Springfield, Illinois area (Athens, Illinois to be exact), teaches at the eighth grade level.

Kim Lawther, daughter of Orville T. Lawther, Jr. has two daughters: Cari Ann Cunningham, born 12/16/1986 and Nikole Marie Woniewski, born 9/05/1991. Last I knew, Kim was living in Tucson, Arizona.

Orville T. Lawther, Jr. also had a son, Thomas Allen Lawther. In one of Kim's e-mail notes to me some time ago, she indicated that she and her brother do not stay in contact. Kim thought that he was still living in Michigan and that he was married but that's all the information she had to share.

As always, good to hear from you,

Chuck Turner
In my mother's genealogy records Orville T.L. Lawther was born in 1906 and died as you said in 1963. I happen to have a copy of that page that said. In this book I do not see the month or day. Mother gave my cousin all the Lawther genealogy books, but she is supposed to be returning them to me because we want to keep all the family history in one location, and I have part of it here (Hosley lineage). So far Rebecca has not returned them so I guess she is due an e-mail reminder. It's been over a month since she said it was being sent back. :) Lets hope it isn't lost in our postal system. From you on do you have any family (children's names and birthdates, wives, maiden names, birth and death dates as well) dates. Mother doesn't have any further than your name and no marriage date filled in on your page. Help is appreciated. She said the rest of the genealogy is all up to me so I am getting started slowly. Some answer, but most do not. No never did hear from Kim. Kathy Liddy

Hi Kathy Liddy! It's been a while. Hopefully you will hear from Kim. Anyway, at risk of repeating info previously sent, here is some of what I have. My grandfather was Thomas Edison Lawther, born 10/09/1879, died 6/04/1966. My grandmother was Mary Elizabeth (Mamie) Van Riper, born 2/19/1894, died 2/01/1967. They lived in Swartz Creek, MI. My grandparents had two children: my mother, Mary Amarilla Lawther, born 1/02/1916, died 10/21/1990, and her brother Orval Thomas Lawther, DOB Unknown to me, died 1963; he was married to Jessie M. Gilbert. I was an only child, born 10/29/1938, and so was my cousin Orval Thomas Lawther, Jr..."Tommy" was born 01/17/1934, died 4/30/1997. My cousin Tom is Kim's dad and Kim has a brother, Thomas Allen Lawther. Kim told me she was born 8/24/1960 (sorry Kim, to disclose a lady's age) and her brother was born 9/24/1962.

Take care, Chuck Turner

Kim here is another relative of yours on the Lawther side of your family. My great grandmother, Nancy Maria Lawther was a sister of James Lawther (born 12/12/1847) here in Michigan.
I remember Tom & Mamie Lawther when I was a little girl. We attended their 50th wedding anniversary. I have an old picture of James Lawther, Sr. (late 1800's) and his wife Carrie (parents of Tom, Mable, and Emma Lawther) at their home on Seymour Rd., Swartz Creek, Michigan. I am trying to go forward on the Lawther genealogy and maybe you can help. I have up to Tom & Mamie Lawther's children but that is as far as I have gotten. Can you help? I need their children, grand chldren, great grands, and further on. Birth dates, and marriage dates, also death dates. Thank you in advance. Kjlid@ismi.net. I have heard some from Chuck Turner.

As you can see from the message board Kim was kind enough to get in touch with me and provide me with information about her parents and her immediate family too. Hopefully all is well with her and I hope she can supply the information you are looking for.

Do you have a Hoopes family album? The Sampler we have (embroidery) is beautiful. It was sewn by Rebecca Hoopes in 1828. It says: Parents James Isaac Hannah Hoopes
Brothers and Sisters James Griffith, Joseph J,Phebe Amy Lirdley, Eliza Rees H Lydia/ann
Ezra M Chalkley and Mary G Hoopes. The only connection on it I can find is that J.J. (Joseph J) on the sampler would be Ellen E. Hoopes father? married to Amanda. My family tree says the father mother of Ellen E. was J.J. and Amanda Hoopes. We have a photograph of Pearl that matches the Oil Painting. She looks about 5 years old? Who is Fannie Louisa Hoopes? Was she Eliza E. sister? We have other old cival war age photo's alot of them we don't know who they are? Probably related? By the way my middle name is Ellen and my grandmother's middle name was Louise.

Thank you, Martha

I, too, am researching the Lawther family in PA. My husband's grandmother was Rachel Lawther - born in PA. Father was John Herbert or Albert LAWTHER. Mother was Jane Harmon. She remarried to a Harbison. Siblings include: George, Ether, Violet, Milburn, Crylla, Rachel and Lawrence. Is this the same family? Thanks. Darlene
