Vincent Lea of Person County, North Carolina

I am trying to identify who the parents of Vincent Lea actually are. Vincent was born abt 1755 or 1782, whichever tree you follow. He married 1)Nancy Bradsher in 1805 and 2)to Nancy Lea in 1825.
I have seen two family trees that have two different sets of parents for Vincent and I would really like to know which ones are his parents. The two sets are:
1) Zachariah Lea
Ann Townes

2) Gabriel Lea
Elizabeth Ashbourne
Any help with straightening this out will be greatly appreciated.
Kathy

Okay here is another reply to me and I don't know what you are replying to. I think I need to take a class. I've been on Ancestry for a few years but never used this message board very much. If I can help you with any information or in any way let me know. I think we must be related but I don't know where your father, Harry C Lea, meets up with my grandfather, Harry C Lea.

I am totally confused as well. My grandfather's name was Harry Calvert Lea 1875-1948. He was married to Ellen Mary McCullough and they had 3 children: Winfield Scott Lea, Mansfield Lea who died when he was 13, and my mother Nancy Nellie Lea. We are related to the Leas at St Lukes as well.
My grandfather's father was Mansfield B Lea. His father was William Robert Lea 1808-?. His father was Col William Lea 1779-1858 who is buried at St. Lukes. His father was Major William Lea who is buried at St Lukes with his wife Dorothy Nelson Lea. How are we related?

Forgive me, I'm a little confused as to who is replying to whom. Are you saying that your grandfather's name was Harry C Lea? If so, do you know when he was born? That was my father's name - I do know that he was married before he married my mother, but I don't know anything else. I'm just getting started in this search, so it's a little overwhelming. I will appreciate any help.
Thanks!

I figured as much. I only saw him maybe twice in my life.
Proof that my father's family was not very close.

Thank you for the information. I shared what I've learned with my younger brother and we're going to try to dig a little deeper. My Dad's sister, Helen, was very involved with the renovation a number of years ago of St Luke's church. Maybe that's a good place to start. It's just hard to piece it all together.

Cassius Lea's first wife was the sister of my great grandfather-- she died right after the birth of their first child. You can read more on her at the St Clair Cemetery site and on my blog- http://genitalesga.blogspot.com/

Harry's father, Thomas Nixon LEA, was a painter and died in 1956 in Bridgeville, Allegheny, PA.

Here is obit for Mary Ellen HICKEY LEA- She and Cassiushad 12 children, with only 9 surviving to adulthood. Their first daughter was named in memory of his first wife, my aunt.

Mrs Cassius M Lea-
Mrs Mary Ellen Lea, aged 58, of 534 Lydia St, Carnegie, died at her home yesterday. She was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church, the Ladies of the Maccabees, Ladies of the Golden Eagle and the ladies’ auxiliary of the Sons of Veterans. She is survived by her husband, Cassius M Lea; three sons, Ellis M of Carnegie, Thomas N of McDonald, and Charles H Lea of Detroit, MI; six daughters, Mrs Emma Reed of the Northside, Mrs Mazie Gregory of Los Angeles, CA, Mrs Cora Dunbar of the Northside and Irene, Ethel and Edna Lea at home; also her mother, Mrs Margaret Hickey, two sisters and two brothers.
Pittsburgh Press, Jan 8, 1915

I also have been in touch with another of your kin thru Harry's brother, Charles. He has very limited info like you on the family.

My Dad took us to St Luke's Church a few times when we were kids, so maybe I'll start there.
I knew his middle name came from a grandfather, but that's about all.
Your names and dates are confusing.I know of three James Monroe Leas in the family. But only one Alfred Mead Lea born 1807.

There are several Zachariah Leas in the family. The main one was the brother of Luke Lea. Luke had a son named David who had a son named James Monroe Lea born 1815.

Luke Lea also had a son named Zachariah who had a son named Alfred Mead Lea born 1776, who had a son named Zacharah, a second son nemed Hampton and a daughter named Sarah Elizabeth.

Another James Monroe Lea who father was George Roddy Lea and a another James Monroe Lea who father was Landon Ludwell Lea.
I found Walker Alfred Lea Sr. in my Townsend book. He was married to Alice Maude Townsend 9 Oct 1919 in Port Arthur TX. His father was Alfred Meade Lea, GF was James Munroe Lea, GGF was Alfred Mead Lea and GGGF was Zachariah Lea.

He was born 10 Aug 1893 in Jackson, LA.
I am also an African American. My family started in Caswell, North Carolina as well. They migrated to Dallas County, Arkansas in around 1865. My great grandfather was Haywood Lea, he married a Viney or Virginia Lea (Lea might have been her m. name). Haywood Lea had brothers, James Lea, Benjamin Lea and others. We might be related, but I know there were a number of branches of Lea's.

James Lea of Cobb's Creek

The purpose of this post is to correct my previous posts linking James Lea of Kilgore's Branch to Lawrence Bankston's daughter in Caswell now Person County, NC.

The simplest answer is that a deposition was found (an amazing discovery) in the library archives in North Carolina where a man named James Lea was deposed three times.... 1793, 1794 and 1797 in which he states, "40 years ago ((1793) I married Lawrence Bankston's daughter." I decided to try to find out which man named James Lea married Lawrence's daughter. There were only three men men named James Lea living in Caswell County in 1790 U.S. Federal Census who had been living there ca. 1750-1753 which included the man who married Lawrence's daughter.

James Lea (Country Line) who is my direct ancestor and married to Anne Herndon. But - he was dead by 1792 with probate papers to prove it.

James Lea (Kilgore's Branch) who married "Anne" (whose last name is in question). While some researchers gave a death date of 1788 .... my own research brought that into question because there are no probate papers... just a quote from a book that they thought he was deceased. I believed this man to be married to Lawrence's daughter when I wrote my book. Later ---- doing additional research and showing the deposition to Betty Fitzgerald of the Caswell County Historical Society, its top researcher... I became convinced that James Lea of Kilgore's Branch really was deceased in 1788.

James Lea of Cobb's Creek remained... the only James Lea living with age to have married in 1750. But the age of his birth as given by some publications and online would have made it questionable. Once again I consulted with Betty and asked her WHO could this be... if not James of Cobb's Creek that married the Bankston daughter... and she agreed that the birth date for James of Cobb's Creek has always been a guesstimate and not based on any real evidence. James Lea of Cobb's Creek was definitely married to an "Elizabeth" but her father is REALLY not known; Ben Rose "guessed" and said, "I think..., but I don't know." James Lea of Cobb's Creek is the only James Lea living in 1793 and 1797, described as "too old and infirm to travel" (the deposition reads) and living in Caswell now Persons County in 1750=1753. This is is the James Lea who married Lawrence's daughter. It is possible that Lawrence's daughter died and he remarried to Elizabeth. It is possible that Elizabeth is Lawrence's daughter. We don't know the answer to that question.

But I am writing another book... on the three men named James Lea of Caswell County. I will be in NC in November and December to meet with Betty and do my own research. But - two of us are in agreement with my hired research team that the answer to the question of who married Lawrence's daughter is James Lea of Cobb's Creek.

I hope this helps and is simple. I plan to note my changes on several websites to alleviate the confusion and help folks see why discovery caused the change from Kilgore's Branch to Cobb's Creek.

See documentation and timeline on my blog, "Lea Links to Caswell County" and email me directly spiritsouth@gmail.com

Catherine Lea- DeKalb, County Alabama b. 1833

Hello there,
I have just recently discovered that my 3X great grandmother was Catherine Lea, who was born in 1833, and was originally from TN. She was involved in a "common law" marriage with Lewis Morgan Jr, who was also born in 1833, and came to Dekalb Co, from TN as well. Together the couple had many children including my GG grandmother Sarah. The interesting thing is that some children went by Lea/Lee, while others took Morgan as their surname. I have found records for Lewis Morgan, as well as a few of his children- Rosencrants Lee, and John M.Lee buried at Beene family Cemetery. I cannot locate where Catherine would be. Also, if anyone has any information as to her lineage, or history regarding the Lea/Lee-Morgan family I would be greatly appreciative.

* I believe that she is not the same person as Catherine America Lea- b. 1850.

Thank you!
Mary

I was try to figure out who were the parents of the George Lea who married Lucy Tolbert and lived in Orange and Caswell counties in NC and Wilkes Co. in Georgia. He is said to have died in 1735 in Georgia. His father's name was William Lea but I have seen claims that he was the son of several different William Leas.
There is the William Lea that married Frances and died in 1804 in Persons, NC. There are several last names for Frances.
There is the William Lea that married Mary Barnett and died much earlier in Orange Co. I've even seen other last names for Mary!
There are a couple of other William Leas that have been proposed also.
Anyone want to help clear this up or explain what is going on?

Hi John,

I am related to the Misterly's through marriage, my grandfather's sister was Hattie Haring, who was married to John Misterly here in Longmeadow and Springfield, Mass. I am looking to see what happened to Hattie and John, and am hoping to find some pictures of them and info on their lives.

If you could email me, that would be great, suefab2000 at yahoo dot com.
Thanks!
Susan
