Hi Judith. Wasn't expecting such a fast reply. This Miss Leadbetter went from Liverpool to Montreal in 1908 at the age of 23 and than Toronto. Maybe she stayed awhile in Quebec? Really hard to track a person with no first name. My dad was born in York (Toronto) in 1918.

We will continue the search...Diane
I am also looking for information about a Miss Leadbetter who came to Canada from the UK & who gave birth to a son (my father) in Quebec City in 1914. However, I don't think her name was Susie. There probably is no connection but I thought you might be interested.

Judith

She may have had a son at a later date.

Looking for Susie Leadbetter possibly in the Toronto area in 1918. Any leads would be appreciated.

Edward was my Great Grandmother's father. I am descended from John & Mary Gibson, their son William was my grandfather. I didn't not know that he had come from England, the Gibson's came from Scotland. My Dad & all of his siblings are gone. It is fascinating to find out these tidbits. Somewhere along the line there is a connection to Jesse & Frank James. Still looking for it. Wish I had asked more questions when everyone was aline.

That would be wonderful to get a copy of that. I am down the line from Martin and Selina through their daughter Katherine. She married Austin Mckusker Brown (not official)who had a daughter Ruth Brown who married Carl Marceniuk who are my parents. My married name is Patricia Proulx.I took a look at your tree and found that I have quite a bit of info for these people, but I also found some I didn't so I was up half the night writing some of these names and dates down. It is so exciting when you find out the info on someone you have been looking for for so long, and know it is correct. I have a question. Would you have a death date for John Roper Leadbeater? I have been finding info that Mary Selina Dowler remarried a Rufus Edward Spangler after John died, but the dates of their children don't match. Have you heard or seen anything about a second marriage for her? My email address is pat_proulx11@hotmail.com Thank you for answering my query. I anxiously await your email. Pat

From 1838 to 1845, Lieut. Leadbetter was assigned to the command of the troops stationed for the protection of the railroad between Bristol and Chattanooga, his duties being to reconstruct bridges, repair and keep open the line of communication between these two points; he also had the arduous task of preserving order and in holding in check the disaffected and insurgent east Tennesseans along the line of the railroad and in the adjoining regions. On March 6, 1862, Col. Leadbetter was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general; on April 29, 1862, he had an encounter with the Federal army marching upon Chattanooga; he was in command of a brigade, with Gen. Bragg was investing Chattanooga. Gen. Leadbetter left Longstreet, November 23, 1863, and arrived in Dalton, Ga., December 3; served the Confederacy faithfully until the close of the war; at its close removed to Mexico and afterwards to Canada.

Married: to a Mrs. Hall, nee Kennedy, a native of Alabama. Kennedy, F.S.

TRANSCRIBER NOTES

1. A photocopy of the original handwritten record in the Mobile Co., AL Probate Court Archives is in possession of Justus P White,
made during avisit to the Archives in March 2004. This is a verbatim transcript. However, punctuation has been changed and paragraphs/spacing have been added for ease of reading.
2. Martha Modest Kennedy (1816-1888) was born in Mobile, AL., the daughter of Dr. William E . Kennedy and Martha D'Olive; and the granddaughter of Dr. Joseph Kennedy and Mary Dick (Hinson) Kennedy of Abbevile, SC. She married Dr. Francis W. Mather of Mobile in 1855 (Marriage license recorded in Mobile Co., AL Probate Court Marriage Book 13, page 434, 3 Jan 1855). The marriage ended in a decree of divorce granted by the Fourth District Court of New Orleans. LA. On 13 Jan 1859 Martha Mather successfully petitioned the Probate Court of Mobile torestore her maiden name of Kennedy. She was childless.
3. The "Joshua Kennedy" mentioned in Martha Kennedy's will as her brother who died in and was buried originally in nearby Baldwin County should not be confused with her uncle, Joshua Kennedy (1777-1838), the son of Dr. Joseph Kennedy who died in Mobile.
4. Mary Louisa Kennedy (1819-1867), daughter of Dr. William E. Kennedy, married Dr. Jesse Carter and resided in Mobile until she was accidentally shot to death by her son, Jesse Jr. Apparently the shock of having killed his mother drove young Jesse insane for he was committed to a mental institution shortly thereafter where he lived until after the turn of the century. Mary Louisa Kennedy had seven children (all listed in Martha Kennedy's will) only one of whom, The Rev. William Arthur Carter (1836-1922), married. He was a long-time pastor of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Columbus Georgia. He married Agnes Quigley and had four children: (1 ) Edith Lee Carter (1872-1946) married Charles M. Woolfolk and resided in New York City. Her descendants contributed family mementos to the Mobile Public Library Kennedy Collection in 1972 ; (2) Mary Agnes Carter (1870-1890); (3) Braxton Curtis Carter (1867-1953) married Elizabeth Miller and lived in Columbus, Georgia; (4) William Arthur Carter, Jr. (1865- ?) was a Civil Court judge in Tampa, FL.
5. Delphine Euphrosine Kennedy (1822- ? ), daughter of Dr. William E. Kennedy, married: (1 ) Daniel Emerson Hall (1810-1852), an accountant from Massachusetts, in Mobile 13 Jan 1840 . This marriage produced three children: Willis Emerson Hall (b. 31 Dec 1840); Delphine Euphrosine Hall (b. ABT 1846); and Danetta Hall, (b. ABT 1851). After the death of Daniel Hall, Delphine Kennedy married: (2) Danville Leadbetter ( 1811-1866), born in ME, a civil engineer in Mobile who served as a Brigadier General, CSA, in the Civil War, as the Chief Engineer in the Army commanded by Braxton Bragg. This second marriage produced one child: Alice Leadbetter. By 1870, all four children of Delphine Kennedy had moved to Davie Co., NC. In 1880 they appear in the census for Forsyth Co., NC. There is no known record of Delphine Kennedy Hall Leadbetter after the 1860 census in Mobile, AL. The reason for the family relocation to NC is unknown. Four descendants of Danetta Hall have been identified in the 1930 census living in Winston Salem, NC.
6. Shortly after their arrival in the City of Mobile, then a part of Spanish West Florida, between 1805-1810, William E., Joshua, and Joseph P. Kennedy, three sons of Dr. Joseph Kennedy , all converted to Catholicism-presumably for political and economic reasons.
By the 1890s, all their descendants had become Protestants again. Trinity Episcopal Church, the beneficiary of the real estate bequest
in Martha Kennedy's will, still exists as an institution in Mobile today.
============================================================
All my research is on my website.

Jacqueline Sleeper Russell
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=jacquelin...

DANVILLE & DELPHINE had a daughter ALICE ELIZABETH LEADBETTER. I am trying to confirm that she married WILLIAM ALMAND BERRY. I believe her mother DELPHINE may have died during the war. DELPHINE's children with first husband DANIEL EMERSON HALL moved to Forsyth County, North Carolina after the Civil War.
The source would be "Leadbetter Records", by J. E. Ames, 1917, p. 32-33. She's also listed in the Weston Vital Records, Deaths, page 345. With the dated gravestone, it's pretty conclusive that this is the daughter of Increase and the missing Sarah (Harrington) Leadbetter.

Albert, I just got some bad news from the woman who archived South Burying Ground... The Sarah Leadbetter who died 31 March 1794 is Sarah, the 19 year old daughter of Sarah & Increase. There's a photo of her fallen gravestone on Find A Grave. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=17...

It's the mother who is among the missing.
Hi...that is funny!!!!! according to a printout I have from a private citizen this info came from the "Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts" by William Richard Cutter...that's for the mother...the Leadbetter records show death of Sarah/Sally on the same date...of course both are unconfirmed...last time I was there your plot survey was gone...I have to hit the library and historical society before the snows fly and do some firming up on my stuff...

albert

That's too funny, Albert~~~ I forgot to switch IDs and sent the last message from my mom's account~!

I contacted the woman who posted the Findagrave page for Sarah, and let her know about the death date and burial. Did you happen to speak to anyone in Weston? The reason I ask is that there are TWO Sarah Leadbetters buried in that plot, so we weren't sure if it was the wife or child. I think we need clarification and a solid source for her death date.

BTW... I left a laminated printout of the burial map rolled up in the South Burying Ground gate a year ago... I wonder if it's still there. :-)

Glenn

Hi, thanx for answering...that information came from Glenn Wallace, who plotted out the cemetery and got all the records from the town. I believe I also found it in the Harrington records...I have the vital records set down for virtually every Leadbetter in the Massachusetts records from the colonial period to 1915 and some beyond for those i am related to (grandmother is a Leadbetter from Lynn)...I also have the Jesse Ames Leadbetter Records which I am in the process of updating, hopefully for publication...I have been to Weston several times and am making one more trip in the fall (I live in NH) I have the cemetery plot already...

thanx and keep in touch!!!!!!!!!!!! or have questions!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much, Albert! We've been looking for this information for so over a year~~~ where did you happen to find her death date?

You can view her memorial page at
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21...

Also, I created a printable PDF of the burial plan:
http://www.crom-a-boo.com/pdf/South-Burying-Ground_Weston-MA... (which strangely shows her age at 50, even though we didn't know her death date.) hmmmm

We are in need of one item regarding the Weston, MA Leadbetters. We are unable to find the death date of Sarah (Harrington) Leadbetter (1743 - ?), wife of Increase Leadbetter (1738-1802). He is buried at South Burying Ground in Weston, but she is not with him there, though most of their family is. (You can view them all on Findagrave.com)

Ed, would you happen to be a decendant of theirs? I'm hoping you might have some insight into Sarah's vital information.

Thanks!

There is a gravestone in Fleetwood cemetery which details a Frederick William Leadbetter whose age at death would place his birthdate in 1877. As far as I can tell, there is only one Frederick William Leadbetter born around this date in the whole of England (to James Leadbetter and Emma Blezard). The problem is the other details on the gravestone don't match with your Frederick William Leadbetter because his date of death is 1943 aged 66 and also mentioned is his wife Olive Blanch (died 1952 aged 61 which would make her 14 years younger than him) and 2 grandchildren Christine Olive and Cheryl. I've also found a record of a Frederick William Leadbetter marrying an Olive Blanch Whitehead in the Fylde district (which includes Fleetwood) in the first quarter of 1919. It would be interesting to get the certificate to see if the father is given as James.
