Do you know of the Henry Leaf, b. ca. 1800, possibly in Va., who was the son of Andrew Leaf? Henry spent most of his life in the Cincinnati area and died there in 1871. Andrew Leaf died in 1813, while in service at Ft. Meigs during the War of 1812. A subsequent marrriage of Andrew's was to a Milly Garrard in Anderson Twp., Hamilton Co., OH in 1812. Andrew Leaf enlisted in 1813 in either Ky. or OH. Wondering if he is related to the Andrew Leaf who was born in 1811-12 in Ky. I am stuck with Andrew, but I see that Henry Leafs appear in several generations/locations. Anything will help. Thanks

I am looking for information about my grandfather Frank Leaf who was born in 1903. I'm not sure where he was born but I know he married my grandmother, Alice Thornhill, in 1930 and had 2 sons.
Any help would be most welcome as there is no one to ask that I know on that side of my family.

I would really appreciate any information esp. evidence about the connection to the English Leaf family as there appears to be many different stories about his parentage.

I believe I am a descendent of Henry Leaf and Ann Tipton. Just wanted to let you all know (if you don't know already) that many members of the Leaf, Tipton, Jones, and Tracey families are buried at Grace Falls Road Methodist Cemetery at Falls and Ridge Roads in Baltimore County MD. I'm not sure if Nicholas and Mathilda are there, but I could check the next time I'm in that area.
Can anyone confirm that either Rachel Campbell was not born in 1755 and thus was 13 when she gave birth to Henry in 1768, or that 1768 is the incorrect year of his birth?
Thank you!

new info. on Andrew Leaf

Reviewed microfilm at Nat'l Archives today. Found statement by Leaf's commanding officer, John T. Chunn of U.S. 19th Infantry, that Andrew Leaf enlisted 2 March 1813 and died at Ft. Meigs on 17 July 1813, being owed $8.00 in back pay. Also found an extract of the marriage of Andrew Leaf and Millie Garrard on 9 April 1812 by Michael Debolt, Esq., a Justice of the Peace, in Anderson township, Hamilton Co., Ohio. If Leaf was originally in the 17th regiment and was transferred to the 19th, perhaps he crossed the Ohio to enlist in Kentucky (the 17th was organized in Kentucky, the 19th in Ohio).

Hi

Have also been researching John Leaf and have so far decided that John Henry is the son of William Leaf of Leaf & sons, silk merchants, who is the brother of Christopher of Kilvington, South Yorks. William married Jane Leaf daughter of Christopher and therefore 1st cousins.

Ladler is in some of the names of the next two generations and is continued through. I don't have info in front of me.

I have the will of William documenting children and wife. I have info from national archives and books about Leaf & sons, silk merchants and info about children of William and grandchildren. Also biographies about William from net.I have spoken with anotherLeaf descendant in London who has confirmed some of the information I have.

I agree about dicrepancies in some previous information wwhich only increase the potential to lead us up the garden path.
See Dearlove family tree for some of it. Still checking and looking for more confirmation.
cheers
Geraldine
Hi Louise

William married his first cousin Jane Leaf and they had 6 or 8 children in London (I can't quite remember but have it somewhere). They then lived in a place called Streatham Park in London. Check out Dearlove family tree and other trees for more details.
I can't answer questions 2 and 5 as we don't know.
Yes John Henry is the son of William as far as we can tell.
There is a lot of information about William Leaf available freely on the internet.
Cheers
Geraldine

Hi Pete,

Thank you for the reply.

1. I did some searching and I believe this to be Marie Kate LEAF from the Birth Index, looking at the 1871 census I can see how that would fit. I've fixed my tree to reflect that change. That takes care of numbers 2 and 3.

As for Ladler / Laidler / Sadler I suspect the answer would be found in his mother's maiden name or in one of the previous generation where this name likely came from.

I don't have exact death dates, my research is on the Bradbury line so I haven't ordered any death certificates for this family. However in the death index there is the death for "William Ladler Leaf" in the Dec quarter of 1871 who was aged 49 making his birth year 1822. This should be the husband of Emma Bradbury. The next William Leaf in the index died in the Sep quarter of 1874 aged 83, this would be the father if the father was William Leaf as I have it recorded.

There is a christening for William Ladler Leaf on 09 JAN 1822 Saint Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, England Son of William and Jane. Pointing more to Ladler as the spelling of his middle name.

Tim

Hi Louise,

I have viewed this thread over the last month or so, but up till now, have hesitated to respond.

Clearly you are a relation of mine, having married into the extended LEAF family in NEW ZEALAND. I do not recall having ever met you, and at this stage can not figure out exactly where you fit in. I do not know how to put this politely, but you are not coming across well, in your internet postings. Genealogical research is usually not just a case of latching on to what is presented. Facts must be supported by documentary evidence e.g. Birth, Marriage, Death, Certificates; Baptism/Christening records, Burials, Census information, Schooling, etc.

Joan LEAF’s book published in 1990, titled “LEAF: PLYMOUTH TO OPARA: LEAF FAMILY REUNION, 1932-1990”, is an excellent starting point, for the descendants of John LEAF who settled at Opara, Hokianga, NEW ZEALAND. The book does however, contain many inaccuracies, and the style of presentation often leads to confusion, particularly between generations; which over time, later generations, including you and me, must fix. The work involved in her compilation must not be underestimated, nor undervalued, it is a tremendous family asset, that links us all to our NEW ZEALAND ancestors, written at a critical time, when such information was rapidly disappearing. Clearly, given yours, and my own concerns, and so far failed attempts; links back to ENGLAND, may have already been lost! We are not the only ones researching the John LEAF connection back to ENGLAND. A bit of internet searching uncovers many other Kiwi’s looking for LEAF roots! John arrived here, very early in this country’s evolution.

Regarding John’s parents, which have been the focus of your posts. Joan herself admitted, by her sentence construction, on page 8 of her book, that “John may not have been the son of Sir William Leaf of London”. Further, my own internet searching has so far failed to establish the existence of a “Sir William Leaf”. The William LEAF, of Park Hill, Streatham, is a certainty; but the “Sir” may be a fantasy!

Death Certificates’ are notoriously unreliable, as the informants are other people, and not the deceased; who actually knew the most! John LEAF’s death certificate in NEW ZEALAND was completed by his grandson-in-law Christie Le Noel, who according to Joan LEAF’s book was married to Maria Charlotte COPE (p133). On John’s Death Certificate, his father is listed as John LEAF, not Sir William Henry LEAF. His mother is listed as Mary LEAF, maiden name not known. His place of birth is listed as Portsmouth, not Park Hill, Streatham, or London. Talk about confusion!!!!!! What is actually correct is anybody’s guess, until documentary evidence proves otherwise!

As I said earlier, I do not think it is possible to just latch on to other people’s research. I have seen it written elsewhere on the internet, regarding John Leaf, but do not like saying it myself, and hesitate profusely, BUT in some cases family members were “air brushed” out of existence, as result of their liaisons in exotic places! Get my drift!! Personally I hope that that was not the case with our John LEAF, and that our ancestors in ENGLAND, had more “spine” than to do something like that. Clearly the letter from John’s nephew, at Sandgate, p10, of Joan’s book, indicates a close relationship, unlikely to be influenced by any such prejudices.

If you want to have a chat call NZ (09) 4041917 or Skype peterwoods1956, though I am not always awake!!!

Apparently we are both independently working on the same issue. Who were John LEAF’s parents! The more people working on it, using independent research avenues, the more rigorous the end result is likely to be.

Kind regards
Pete
Hi Tim,

I am also descended from the John LEAF who immigrated to NEW ZEALAND and settled at Opara, in the Hokianga, who has already been mentioned in this thread. Like another poster in this thread, I am also trying to “flesh things out”, and establish the connection to “Mother ENGLAND”! I have a couple of queries regarding your family listings, shown in the first posting.

1.	Rarie R LEAF. That’s a pretty unusual name! Is it correct, or is it possibly a typing error?

2.	If you google, using the search words “William Ladler Leaf”, most likely on the first page, you will find an entry under “Who’s Who – Google Book Result” one Frederick Charles ROMER, who married Marie Kate d of late William Ladler LEAF..... Unfortunately only a snippet is provided. In the snippet, enough accurate information is conveyed to pose the question; where does she fit in?

3.	Are individuals 1 & 2 above, likely to be the same person?

I also note that on some of the internet material the “Ladler” is spelt “Laidler”, etc. Would you know which is actually correct? I am reasonably sure that the "Sadler" is incorrect.

On a related matter, do you have accurate dates of death for William Ladler LEAF, and his assumed father, William LEAF? I am of the understanding he died about the same time as his assumed father, and, given the repeating names, things get very confusing! An obituary for Walter LEAF, the son of Charles John LEAF, indicates a similar time of death for his Uncle (William Ladler LEAF), and Grandfather (William LEAF).

Would you have any birth or baptismal/christening information that definitively connects William Ladler LEAF to William LEAF of Park Hill, Streatham?

I hope you do not mind my queries, and are able to assist.

Kind regards and best wishes,

Pete
New Zealand

Hi Guy

Thanks for your email. At some stage I would love a copy of William Leaf photo. When does your posting finish in Thailand??.

I am slowly working through this puzzel, as it is a huge job that I have taken on, as it is so important to keep your family history going for the future generations.

As I have mentioned that in 2012 it will be 180 years that John Henry Leaf came to New Zealand. I am trying to update the family tree for this. Can any other family members help me with any information/ photos about John growing up as a young boy/man I know that it is a long shot???? As I am wanting to know as much as possible about his early life. Also any other information/photos of interest about John family.

Where abouts do you fix in the family tree, On the copies of the family tree that I have it doesn't continue down showing current families. Can I have a copy of your family tree?????

I am sorry If I come across as pushy about getting a photo of William Leaf, It would be wonderful to see what he looks like as he was a wonderful man and had a wonderful life. It would be like the icing on the cake.

Are you or any other family member able to give anecdotes and remembrance/memories of William Leaf.

The more you get involve with doing up your family tree the more exciting it becomes and you can get hookup on it.

My daughter Victoria Shaw is based in London at the moment, she is doing her OE and is working as a Nanny.

Once again I would like to thankyou for the help, and input.
Kind Regards
Louise

Hi all,
As I said previously I have some data on the french part of william Bradbury LEAF tree. He marries Marthe Julie Blanche GROS (father: Gustave GROS, mother Louise Marie BERNARD).
Hi Louise
I have not found a pic of Wm. Leaf. If I do, I will send it. Meanwhile, have you tried the Public Records Office at Kew? Their notice boards also carry lots of cards from individual researchers wo will take on the job, for a fee of course.
It is a great source. Maybe worth looking also for the local Streatham Library research people who would have records. And I expect you have also Google-searched Wikipedia for 'William Leaf.
Happy hunting - in the end they say patience has its rewards!
Kind regards
Brian

Hi Brian

William Leaf - Park Hill Streatham.

I know that there are lots of generation of William Leaf from Streatham.

Do you have any photos of the William Leaf, if so I would appreciate any copies, or any other information regarding this family. Do you know of any other family contact that
I can make regarding the Leaf Family of Streatham or suggestion.

I am trying to piece together the English side of the Leaf, I have the New Zealand of the Leaf. John Henry Leaf who was the son of William or Christopher Leaf came to New Zealand in 1832. I believe that there is a connection between William and John Leaf.

In 2012 it will be 180 years that John Henry Leaf came to New Zealand from England. Hence while I am interested in
the Streatham Leaf family.

We have a small family from of the Leaf fomerly of Yorkshire and Bishop Monkton living at Park Hill Streatham.

It show Christopher Leaf and Jane (Peacock) Leaf are Johns parents, but other family members are saying that William is the father??????????????? Very confusing....

Once again your support and help is veru much appreciated as I am finding more pieces to the puzzel.

Kind Regards
Louise

My name is Louise, my husband is a descendant of John Henry Leaf, yes I am very interested in photos of any info regarding William Leaf Family Tree. Any photos or a copy of your family tree, or any other interesting information about William Leaf and family would be very much appreciated.I photo of John??
1. Have just relocated to Thailand for a 2 year posting and sadly all my genealogy stuff stayed in England. Do not have any photos of your JHL but do have a family tree but not right now.

I am doing up our descendants of John Henry Leaf 1809-1895.
Came to New Zealand in 1832 and married Te Rangahau Terewhare, and they had 12 children.
2. Have been contacted in the past about a Kiwi connection and I believe your JHL was a bit of a naughty boy in England (or could just have been a younger son of many and sent off on an adventure), got sent to sea and jumped ship with a local girl in NZ!

In the Leaf Family Reunion 1832-1990 book it shows a small family tree of William Leaf family. I can't see how Johns fits in??
3. Without family tree bit hard to remember but JHL was younger (youngest?) son of William Leaf of Park Hill. William and his brother Christopher moved to London from Yorkshire in late 18th century, set up a drapers shop in Fleet Street and then made a lot of money in the silk business. Park Hill is a huge house and all his sons/daughters lived around Park Hill with their families (a pack of 52 cousins played together!)

There is a connection of John Henry Leaf and William Leaf the Leafs of Park Hill Streatham and Bishop Monkton Yorks. ???

It shows a William Ladler Leaf married Emma Bradbury, had a son William Bradbury Leaf DOB 1848 married Marthe Gros of Lyons France and died 1918.
4. William Ladler is my great, great grandfather, and William Bradbury my great greatuncle.

Also mentioned Margaret Leaf and George Coles a Dorothy and a Isobel Leaf. Major James Gordon Leaf, Charles Henry Gordon.
5. George Coles was business partner of Leaf's who married bosses daughter. Dorothy and Isobel were (if I remember right)spinster daughters of William Leaf of Park Hill, sisters to William Ladler. Hosted some Oz relations during WW1.
6. JG Leaf was my grandfather and CH Leaf my dipsomaniac uncle (elder brother to my dad).

The Leaf family - Autobiography written by G Bailey in England. Also said that a typed copy of the letter John Leaf from nephew at Sandgate, England. I can scan this and forward to you if you want a copy.
7. Intrigued about this book and letter, please send copies. Email address leafx5@btinternet.com

I am wanting to know if this is the same family as
John Henry Leaf???
Yes!!

I would love confirmation of John Henry Leaf parents Names (I have William Leaf married Mary Gamble)Leaf, William Henry, Sir Killed in Action on board HMS Victory at the battle of Trafalger. I don't believe that this is correct.

Do you have any William Leaf that was in the Navy and Killed
in action on board HMS Victory???

8. Never heard this story before, but could be true, you never know. A Leaf cousin was a very distinguished naval captain during WW2 but sadly KIA. Leaf family also has 4 Olympic medallists in the popular sports of rackets, sailing and polo, which I never knew about till recently so Trafalgar might not be too much of a stretch.
I am getting very confused about this
because I can't match up where John Henry Leaf fits in.

I know that John Henry Leaf had sibblings, as John was the youngest son.

So seeing your message I thought that I would email you and get confirmation or you can clarify, as I am getting very confused and would love to put the missing pieces of the puzzel together.
Hi Louise
Don't know where William Leaf lived. Rich silk merchant Leaf & Sons, Old Change in City.1855 Treasurer of new orphans school for warehousemen & clerks, president Lord John Russell. 1860 Mrs Wm. Leaf at Crystal Palace raised money for charity bazaar for school now at Purley Surrey, few miles from Streatham. October 1877 Mrs Charles J. Leaf laid foundation stone at school for new Leaf Memorial Wing in memory of Wm. Leaf, opened 12 mths later by Princess Louise, 4th daughter of Qn Victoria. Hope this helps. but suspect it may not be the same family.

Best Wishes,
Brian
I am Historian for Royal Russell School, formerly the Royal Warehousemen, Clerks and Drapers' Schools of Purley and Croydon, Surrey. I am seeking a portrait of William Leaf who joined the School Board on January 23rd 1854. A colleague was Walford Greatorex (Bradbury, Greatorex and Beal) who became chairman in 1856. I also seek sight of any portrait of Greatorex. HM the Queen is the School's current Patron and small copies of former benefactors' images are needed for the new Performing Arts Centre. Any guidance you can provide would be really helpful. With best wishes, Brian Angel
