Hi, one of my leahy ancestors from Ballymachugh, Co Cavan married a mccabe - supposedly a priest. Her 2 sisters also married priests - which was ironic as the parents were staunch protestants (Francis Lahey and Rebecca Burrows). There's an extensive marriage articles deed of the parents. Do you know if your relatives were from Co Cavan ?

David - leahydavid@gmail.com

Woo-Hoo! - I found a free website for County Kerry Burials.
http://www.kerrylaburials.ie/en/SearchBurial.aspx
Kilquane Cemetery is included. Thanks so much, I hadn't look for cemeteries online for Kilquane. The burials don't appear to go back much earlier than 1930...but I'm still checking out the site.

My biggest question which no one has been able to answer is...

Where did the families of Ballinloghig come from before they established their small community at the base of Mount Brandon?

Also, when my cousins were in Ballinloghig last summer, they were told of family burial grounds of the LEAHY family, unfortunately their group & agenda did not allow time to go see. I don't even know if those graves are marked. My research has blanks for death records of the residents.

Ballinloghig / Ballinloughig
Family Names I have come across in my research:
Ash
Baker
Begley
Bowler
Burke
Connor
Crean (is there another spelling for this surname?)
Deady
Dinahy
Dowde
Farrell
Fitzgerald
Garvey
Grandfield
Hannifin
Harrington
Higgins
Houlihan
Kay
Keefe
Leahy (lots of them)
Malone
Martin
Moore
Moriarty (lots of them!)
Nehilly
O'Brien
O'Donnell
Scanlon (lots of them)
Shea
Stack
Sullivan (lots of them)
Walsh
Martyn, Thanks for the note.
I have wondered too if there may not be a connection but I think not and I cannot provide an answer to the questions you ask.
I am familiar with the stories of the branch of Leahys to which you refer but am certaim they are only remotely related, if at all.
We have no information beyond a name for the husband of Mary Buckley.
As you will appreciate both the surname and the given names were common in those Irish counties.
Sorry not to be able to offer you more.
There have been some both some confusion and incorrect attempts to associate the two families on ancestry.com, I have come to believe.
BB
Hi there,

I am actually trying to trace the ancestors of this John Leahy and Mary Buckley to see if they are related to my Leahy ancestors also from Cork (around Schull).

Similarly my Leahys also came to QLD Australia.

Do you happen to know who your John Leahy's parents and or grandparents are.

If we are related then I have some information to share going back earlier but I know nothing personally of the children you are looking for.

I have read (which is how I started looking into these Leahy's) that the son Daniel Leahy who married Ellen Stone in Toowoomba 11/9/1895 and the had 9 children. One of these children named Michael James Leahy b. 1901 was a very important pioneer in Papua New Guinea.

Look forward to hearing from you and learning if these Leahy's can connect into my Cork Leahy's.

Regards Martyn

MARY HANNAH ("ANNA") LEAHY - CO OFFALY

Hi all – I do hope I’m posting in the right place but if not, someone please give me a shove in the right direction!
I’m looking for information about my Mother’s family although I have only vague bits of info to go on I’m afraid.

Mum was born MARY HANNAH LEAHY in Tullamore (May 1947) to parents John and Kathleen Leahy. Kathleen’s maiden name (we think) was HYNES although we can’t be sure of the spelling.

Kathleen died approximately two years later and Mum came to England to live with extended family in Hemel Hempstead.
John remarried (the name “Lena” rings a bell for some reason?) and has since died although I have no idea when this was or where he was buried.

Mum was known by the name “Anna” as a child, not realising her actual name was Mary Hannah until about twenty years ago. She knows very little about her parents or early life in Tullamore and has only a replacement copy of her birth certificate.

There are no photographs or old notes / certificates etc to help her trace back family so she’s going purely on memory.
If anyone has any information that they think might be of some use, please could you drop me an email? Charlyparly@googlemail.com

Many thanks in advance

Charlyparly

I'm looking for information (and relatives) of a family of Leahy's that settled in Minnesota (in and around St. Paul). There were several siblings:
William Joseph Leahy (1874-1944) - he was a telegrapher for the railroad;
Nell (or Nellie) Leahy (1876-1942);
Anna Leahy (1878-1900) - I have very little information on Anna;
Marie Leahy (1880-1918);
John Patrick Leahy (1881-1944) - Like his older brother, he was also a telegrapher;
James Edward Leahy (1884-1950) - My grandfather;
Katherine Bernadette Leahy (1887-1966);
Francis Leahy (1889-1907) - I have no information on him;
George Joseph Leahy (1892-1974) - he moved to Chicago and was quite successful in the coal business;
Florence F. Leahy (1895-1969);

Any family stories, photos or information would be appreciated.

Jeff

John Leahy + Mary Hennebery, Co. Cork, (born ~1805), Michael b. ~1830

John Leahy Sr. married Mary Hennebery on 31 Aug 1833 (perhaps 1823, a year before David’s birth?) All of their known children were born in Ireland:

1. David Leahy, (1826-1872) born in Jamesbrook Townland, Garranekinnefeake Civil Parish, County Cork, died in Empire, Colorado.

2. Marcus John Leahy, (1837-1901), born in Jamesbrook Townland, Garranekinnefeake Civil Parish, County Cork, died in Central City, Colorado.

3. John Leahy Jr. (1840-1894), born in County Cork, died in Central City, Colorado.

4. Michael Leahy (1830 – ), stayed in Ireland.

5. Margaret Leahy (1831 – ), married Mannix, came to US. (Margaret Mannix).

6. Nell Leahy (1831 – ), married Fitzgerald, came to US. (Nell Fitzgerald).

Per FamilySearch records [ https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/M7GB-WX5 ]one of the brothers (Marcus) was born in Jamesbrook Townland, Garranekinnefeake Civil Parish, County Cork, which is 5 miles east of Cobh.

Per family history the three brothers came to the US in 1856. Best guess is that Michael, Margaret and Nell were born 1827 to 1836, as those years cover a big gap between the births of David and Marcus. David died in the US and his birth date seems accurate. John Sr. was the son of David Leahy, estimated birth 1775. I have US census records and etc. on the three brothers, yet nothing on Michael, Margaret (Leahy) Mannix, or Nell (Leahy) Fitzgerald.

Do any of these names register with anyone?

David Leahy & Honora Connor of County Cork

I am trying to find the location in County Cork where David Leahy and Honora Connor came from and who the siblings and parents were of David Leahy. David married Honora Connor whose parents were Timothy & Mary,in 1847 in Merythyr Tydfil, Wales. Honora had a sister Elizabeth living in Merthyr Tydfil as well. Elizabeth had married a Jeremiah Foley who was a potato merchant. Jeremiah Foley may have been from Bandon, County Cork. David & Honora emigrated from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales in 1853 and first settled in Union County, Pennsylvania. They then moved to the Conshohocken area between 1860 - 1882. Jeremiah and Elizabeth Foley emigrated to the Conshohocken area as well.David & Honora had the following children: Eugene & Johanna born in Wales and Mary, John, David, and Philip born in Pennsylvania. They belonged to the St. Matthew's Parish. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Dan
I haven't gotten anything farther back. I do have bits and pieces I've gathered on LEAHYs over the years. I'm not positive, but Patrick LEAHY & Margaret FRAWLEY may have had a daughter Bridget "Delia" A. LEAHY. Delia is a common nickname for Bridget. There are John and Walter "HIGGINS" listed as pall bearers.

The Springfield Sunday Republican
Springfield, Mass., July 19, 1953
Mrs. Delia (Leahy) Leahy of 93 Pine St., widow of Thomas Leahy, died at her home Saturday after a long illness. She was born in County Cork, Ireland, and had been a resident of Springfield for the past 60 years. She was a member of the Married Ladies Sodality of St. Michael’s Cathedral. She leaves one son, Thomas F. Leahy of this city, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held from the Hannigan funeral home Tuesday morning at 8:15, followed by a solemn high mass of requiem in St. Michael’s Cathedral at 9. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

The Springfield Union
Wednesday, July 22, 1953
The funeral of Mrs. Delia Leahy of 93 Pine St. was Tuesday morning at the Hannigan funeral home with a solemn requiem high mass held in St. Michael’s Cathedral. Celebrant was Rev. Timothy J. Leary, Rev. D. Robert H. Stafford was deacon, and Rev. John T. MacPherson, subdeacon, Rev. Francis E. Donnellan, S.S.F., was seated in the sancuary. Bearers were: Robert, Thomas and Joseph Wynne, John Leahy, John and Walter Higgins. Burial was in St. Michael’s Cemetery with Rev. Robert T.
Thank you for finding this post. WOW!

Yes, my cousin Nathan, family and friends met Thomas. They were on vacation, a small group of 10 people. They requested their driver/guide to show them the Ballinloughig area where our LEAHY ancestors lived... they did not imagine they'd actually meet a LEAHY. So, Nathan was somewhat surprised... me too!

My questions concern our ancestors. How long have they lived in Ballinloughig? Over a hundred years, eh? The farthest back I got to is James LEAHY & Bridget HIGGINS (If I am correct in my tree climbing) Any idea where they lived previously?

Tom and your mother were welcoming, to talk with and let them wander around their property. Nate said Tom mentioned a family cemetery and told a story of shared burial plots. He pointed out the old stone house. Also he said another LEAHY relative from America had knocked on his door some years back. It was a delight for me to see my cousins, joined by Tom, in a group photo.

I have found several residents of Ballinloughig came to Hampden County, Massachusetts. Surnames of Leahy, Scanlon, Sullivan, Moriarty. I've read about the potato famine, but is that the true reason the residents of Ballinloughig left for America?

Dar Duncan

That was probably my mother Niamh and Tom Leahy that your cousins met in BallinLoughig? If it wasn't maybe I can put you in touch with her? I am not sure exactly of the information you seek but it might help?
Brid Leahy

Re: Any Leahy's who were Protestant or Episcopalian in Ireland?

My Leahy's were also protestant from Cavan and Westmeath. There were lots of protestants around in the 1800's in Cavan and Westmeath. Still a few left. Most emirgrated or moved North. Times and troubles made it difficult to live in Ireland as a protestant.

A very poignant story. Thanks for sharing that personal history. The names and circumstances bear no relation to any family history I am aware of.... I suspect if there was any relationship it was fairly remote.

Thanks for the reply,my Grandmother was Lenaghan , my Aunt Ita never married, she died over 30 years ago. The house had been divided in two ,my Aunt lived on one side and I'm pretty sure Timmy Buckley and his Family live on the other side,the land in Glencarney was left to my Father 200 acres, a few ears before his death he signed the house an land over to my Aunt so she could deal with the land commission, some thing to do with planting trees thinking when she died she would leave it to me, she actually left it to the Boyfriend that had gone off to America many years before to earn the £1000 dowry needed for My Father to sign the land over, the Boyfriend never came back, he married in the states but kept in touch through out the years, we were informed about my Aunts death by a neighbour in London who had seen the death notice in the Irish Post,the story goes she did it to spite my Father whom she blamed for insisting she have a £1000, she left me £200 in her will. as I was the only living relative I could have contested the will, but it was her dying wish that the Man she loved and could never be with have the land, so! ;-) if I have any living relatives beyond a certain age they would no doubt recall that story!
Maggie.
