I was given an old letter from the "Lean" families in England trying to contact all members of the family world wide. It is dated appprox 1958. Known Lean clan members actually have a huge reunion to which any member of the family is invited. That year it was taking place in London. Date and time were included. In the letter they explained that the family pronounce Lean as in Lane... as in MacLean or McLean with the Mcs left off. This distinction is apparently very important to them to protect. I am quite happy to share this letter with anyone who wished to have a copy.

Well actually, I personally have no Lanes or Leans (though I did know some of the family of David Lean, director, and my current VP is Lane, does that count?). I do know that the Scottish clan MacLean is pronounced as Lean or Lane and that the Scottish clan MacBean is pronounces as Bean or Bane. So my question is: is the name Lane derived from Clan MacLean, e.g. Scottish in origin?

Lean and Lane

I have always assumed that Lean is shortened MacLean just as Bean is shortened MacBean. Both would originally be pronounced MacLain and MacBain. In fact the chief of MacBain spells his name that way - which has the advantage of being easily pronounced.

So my question is whether Lane is an anglicised spelling of MacLean as well - or is not Scottish highlands at all? I know that MacBean spread widely post-Jacobite rebellions, so would not be surprised to find that MacLean did too. [Following the Clan Chattan diaspora]

It is very likely that the wedding took place at Caerhays Parish Church [St Michaels].

If you require any further details and want to obtain a copy marriage certificate I can give you a reference number in order that you can purchase it on-line.

Please give me a shout if you require any Tregony vital records.

Best Wishes

Frank Grigg
St Austell
England.
Hi Glenda

I'm researching my family history and have read some of your emails on ancestry.com. I'm hoping that a few links may be found. So far I've retraced back to 1821 to a John Lean who married Elizabeth Huddy in 1848 in Probus they had four sons. John died in1858. The family settled in Probus but by 1900 my ggrandfather was living in Truro and married a Cora Ball they subsequently had 13 children. Dont know if any of this ties in with your family would be great to hear.

Regards

Tracy

Christina,

Kathren Lean was born about 1655. She married Captain John Steil who was involved in the battle of Bothwell Bridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1679. It is recorded that John's father, Robert, was killed during the battle.
The surname changed over the years to Steel(e).

It appears that some relatives were born in the parish of Lesmahagow, eg my great grandmother was born in Kirkfieldbank, Lesmahagow, although others seem to have lived in Lesmahagow it self.

Please do not hesiate to contact me again should you find a connection with our trees.

Regards,

Kim

England

Thank you Kim, you have managed to get further back than me. I will copy your information and get back to you if I find a link. I have not connected any Weir family so far, I have been working on my own massive family. My husband's family were in Ayrshire but on reading the Lesmahagow history I have found that the lands, at that time, included many of the place names in Ayrshire. Did your family live in the town of Lesmahagow or did they come under the parish of Lesmahagow? I was surprised at how important a place 'Lesmahagow' had been in history. Thank you again for contacting me, this is the only way we can find our history. Christina

Jane Lean, ENG>NY>WI

I'm looking for information on my ggg grandmother, Jane Lean, wife of John Sanders. John was born in 1806 in England. Jane was also born in England, but I'm not sure when. They imigrated to NY where they had several children including John - b. abt. 1834, Sarah - b. abt. 1845, and Elizabeth - b. abt. 1848. By 1850 they were in Wisconsin where they bought forty acres of land in Walworth County. They had another son in Wisconsin, William - b. abt 1850. I believe Jane Lean died before 1870. The 1880 census shows John Sanders living in the household of W. B. Lean in LaGrange, Walworth County, WI. Also, I found a Sarah Lean as a witness to the marriage of Jane's son, William, to Anna Hurdis in Delavan, Walworth County, WI, in 1877. Thanks!

Hello Kevin, thank you for your message. You were unexpected as I was working on the Thomson family so I am glad you contacted me. I have been collecting information for many years but since I got my pc. last year everythimg is snowballing. I have found five descendants from all sides of the family and all over the world. I do not have much to give you - James Thomson m. Mary Lean abt 1770 he was born abt. 1743. Their daughter Martha b.1770, m Thomas Thomson b.1776. Their son Robert b.1808 m. Mary Morton 1820-1880. Their son George b.1851 m. Mary Ann Stewart b.1845. (George was a lawyer in Lanark and owned the Inn at Crossford) their daughter Mary Morton Sandilands Thomson b.1876 m. William Rankin b.1875 - my grandparents - had a son George b.1900 m. Christina Thomson b.1910. my parents. These families had many children (until my father's generation) so we have many relatives out there, and I hope to track many of them down. Family first names - William, Mary,Martha, James Robert, Margaret etc. I hope this helps. I will be glad to hear from you with more news. If you give me your e-mail I will pass on infotmation when I get it. Christina

Hello John, I have a little information on Mary Lean . I saw your enquiry on Lesmahagow on line and have tried to go back a couple of generations but I am still working on it. First I will tell you that the Pate family name has been in Lesmahagow for generations. Lean, or I have been told McLean, are also known in Lesmahagow. I think they are separate from the southern ones. My Mary Lean was born abt.1735. She married a James Thomson on 7-6-1751 in Lesmahagow. Your Mary Logan Lean b.26-5-1866 to William Pate and Margaret Lean, they married on 24-8-1866. As you can see I have to work back a few generations. If you have any further info. please let me know. I have found over forty Lean's in Lesmahagow and I have just started. I also found Mary's mother Margaret b.1845 in Kirkintilloch parish of Lesmahagow, f.James Lean m. Lillias Chalmers. Christina Weir.

I have traced me LEAN ancestors back to a John Lean who married Any MARK in Tywardreath in 1666. Their children were John, Wiliiam, Elizabeth, Tamson and Mary - birth dates unknown. I am descended from John who married Margaret Tom in Tywardreath in 1719. However I have many people missing along the outer branches!
Does anyone else have any reference to these people?

LEAN Family

Darren,

I cannot see your email address in this system to respond directly, so I am responding here. My ggg-grandmother was Ann Lean, who married Philip Hawke in Maker Parish in 1814. However, I suspect they were much more tied to the Pelynt/Lanreath parishes, as Philip's father was married in Lanreath, and because Philip Ann (Lean) Hawke lived and raised their family in Pelynt.

Based upon some sketchy family records, Ann was likely born about 1789. After the death of Philip in Pelynt in 1848, she followed her children to Waynesville, Warren Co., Ohio, USA where she died in 1858.

While I have much info on the Hawke family, I have not been able to go further back on Lean. Any information or thoughts would be appreciated.

Brad
106135.3520@compuserve.com

Alan,

My brick wall is Ann Lean, who married Philip Hawke in Maker Parish on 10 December 1814. They later moved to Pelynt, which was Philip's ancestral home. I suspect she was also of Lanreath origin, where there are many Leans. Ann was Philip's third wife, and it is possible she was married earlier as well.

Ann later emigrated with her children to Ohio, where she died in 1858. From her stated age at death, it is believed she was born about 1789.

Should you come across this Ann, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Brad

Alan,

Thanks. I have the IGI data as well; for some reason it is incomplete in that it omits my direct ancestor Philip b. 1828. Philip can be found in the parish registers but not the IGI.

The last source I have for Ann in Cornwall is her listing in the 1851 census in Pelynt. My information is that she came to America in 1853 together with her daughters Elizabeth and Margaret. She died in Ohio on November 4, 1858.

If you have other information that indicates she was in Cornwall in 1858, please advise.

Jaonna had a number of brothers and sisters. I assume that you are looking for Samual and there seems to be only a William Anthony and Thomas. You can see a list by accessing Batch C053151 on the IGI. Let me know if you need more directions.
