Since some of Walter Leat's children are still living, I won't give details to the message board. The children that I have are: Margaret Anne, who passed away in 2007; Walter Thomas, who passed away in 2002; John Charles; Robert; Charlotte; Jean (April 1956-March 25, 1976); and William (Willie). I am guessing that you are a child of Margaret Anne Leat Wheeler. I have birth years for the children of Walter and Charlotte (Sissy/Sissie) and have little else. My mother-in-law is Walter Leat's sister, Mollie. She is still living, but has Alzheimer's. Two of our Leat cousins in the London area have found information on the family back to the early 1800s (relations of John Leat, who passed away in 1999). I think we have one picture of Walter and his family--not all of the children. Mollie took a photo of Jean's grave marker on one of her visits many years ago.

I know this is a very very late message as years have passed...

Walter Leat b.1920 d.1985 was my Grandfather I believe, I was a toddler when he passed, apparently I used to go in his room every day before he died...

anyways some more information that might help, walter and Charlotte had, I believe 7 or 8 children, I'm not sure... reading about the daughter Jean is the first time I have heard of her.... anyways.. the children were Margaret, Thomas (Walter), Robert, John-Charles, Charlotte and William..

Was a magician who performed at many venues he also wrote many books on magic,you can buy these from the internet.
He also developed many tricks and illusions,he lived in London and died in 1949.
He was quite famous in his day.

John, All the Leat's I have on my tree are from England in the county of Devon in a small place called Sidbury - so many of them I am sure some did emigrate to other countries

Phil: I saw your posting of 28 Jan 2009 containing name "John Leate." I am researching a John Leate who appeared in Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1700's, marrying a Boston born girl named Mercy Cruft (Cruff) in 1726. They had children in Boston. Church records spell the surname "Late" but other indications suggest the name was spelled "LEATE." I am working on the Boston Cruft genealogy and have a great deal of information about them; however, I need to know where John Leate came from... and where his children went. Since some would have been in Boston in 1776, if they were Loyalists they may have ended up in Canada (as did some other Cruft descendants.) John

Hi john i have some information that may help as you ask where did they settle when they arrived in new Zealand, they settled within the manawatu region a little town called sanson burke st is what i have been told they had 3 daughters mary, magaret, ren. Mary happens to be my grandmother who has now passed on.

There definitely is a link. My mother-in-law is Mollie Leat, son of Walter Leat and sister to Walter, and twins John & Jim. I believe we are related. Her brother Walter was born in April 1920 and died in December 1985. Walter was married to Charlotte Wilson (nickname Sissy or Sissie). Walter and Charlotte lived in Alness, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. Their children: Jean 1956-1976, Margaret Ann, 1946-2007, Robert, Walter Thomas, 1947-2002, Charlotte and William. I don't have much information on this line. During WWII, Walter served inBurma, China and India with the Seaforth Islanders and received the Military Medal. Which of Walter and Charlotte's children is your parent? I have several lines of Leats beyond Walter Leat (1892-1967) which have been provided from John & Jim Leats' families. Hi there, i think there may be a connection between your family and ours. My husbands grandfather was Walter Leat(b1920) who originated from Tiverton, Devon. Walter had twin brothers John and Jim (b1928) and a sister Mollie(b1922). Is Mollie your mother in law or of any connection? We know that Mollie married Paul Breno and moved to Toledo Ohio. My husbands grandfather's father was Walter Leat who was married to Gertrude Anne Davies. Please let us know if there is a link or not.

hi - Well it's been a little over 2 yrs now since starting my family tree, I am still looking for anyone with information on the Leat's from Sidbury area of Devon England. I don't beleive that's where my family started from even though I can only find a connection with Leat's back to John Leate 1670c although I don't really know where he was born.

I am sure we have actually communicated via email quite a while ago, i am Phil Leat, I am still trying to conect all the Leat's from Sidbury area of Devon England, not an easy task as a lot of the Sidbury documents don't seem to excist any more. There were so many Leat's from that area, I just wish I had started this family tree stuff when my Dad was still alive.

Interesting to note that the first names in your arm of the Leat family, are prevalent in my arm of the family. My late Dad - George Hamlet Leat, had a sister whose name was Iris. She married a man with the surname of Heather. They had a son whose first name was Robert. I am sure that although we do not share the same arm of "Leat", there must be a connection somewhere, alternatively that era, used names of the same nature. Dietabix and myself met via this site and it has been truly a blessing to find "REAL" family. I wish you luck with your search. Hellllloooooo, my dearest Sue. Yes back in the ladn of the living. Have small problem to sort out with e-mail system. Should be able to get that done by Saturday afternoon. One that is cleared up, I shall be back in full force. Or should I say - as the new job allows me! Am absolutely exhausted. But all the news in emu. Can only access my emu's via direct entry into my Polka Box. Not mad about sending mail that way, as you have to remain on line while doing it, hence I shall end up spending a fortune. At least with emu working properly, I can type it and then go on-line and send, saves a ton of bucks! Look forward to chatting again. Oh please let me know about our new coz! Hi there. So sorry this has taken so long. Been without Computer! A branch of our Leat family did move to Canada. However this was the daughter of May Leat. Daughter Margret is still alive. But May was not born in Devon. She was born in Stoke-on-Trent. A possiblity might be a gent named Phil. If you look at the Leat message boards, you should find his particulas. If you have no success, please do not hesitate to send me an e-mail at cscm@polka.co.za. I do have Phils address, only small problem is the address is in older version of Address book (before my P.C. was upgraded. I have to do a bit of searching myself to try and find the address.

I've been trying to research the Leat family name for some time now and have found that all the info that I have on the Leat's of Devon in the 17th and 18th century is not matching up.My great[4] grandfather was William Leat born 1769 in Devon,married Anne Ryder in 1794 they had 7 children,one of whom was William[James]Leat who was born 1816 in Devon and married Sarah Anne,he died in NF.Canada.I have some info since my family ancestors came to Canada,but am unable to find anything else from Devon.If anyone has any info. please contact me here or directly at gtleyte@yahoo.ca I would truely appreciate any help.

Hi John. Have been going thru your Leate postings. I have a William Leate b 1793 Plymouth Devon died 1866 Langtree Devon married Mary Rowland 1815 Plymouth St Andrew then Rebecca Ridcliff 1849 Torrington. William had 6 children with Mary then another 5 with Rebecca. Possible father for him is Robert Leate. Is there any connection with your Leates?

My father 1902, Grandfather 1878 and Great Grandfather 1853 were George Edward Leat. Trying to find Sarah has been hard as there are so many birth dates for her see what you think =
In the 1851 Census Sarah 1824, is married to John Leat 1814 from Bath, children are = John 1844 = Charles 1847 = Harriet 1849 = Eliza 1851.
In the 1861 Census the name is spelt Leet, Sarah 1825 is married to John Leet 1814 from Bath, Children are = John 1844 = Charles 1848 = Eliza 1851 = George ( my Great Grandfather ) 1853 = Caroline 1856 = Emma 1859 = Sarah A 1860
In the 1871 Census Sarah 1827 is a widow children = Goerge 1853 = Caroline 1855 = Emma 1858 = Jane 1869.
In the 1881 Census Sarah 1822 widow is living with daughter Emma 1860 = Charles Brassington 1852 = John Brassington 1877 = James Brassington 1878 = Hannah 1879.
Could this be the same Sarah ? they were all born in Moreton in the Marsh, Gloucestershire, and all ended up in Hanley, Stoke on Trent. I think they are the same Sarah, but with a mix up on the birth year, it's too much of a coincidence don't you think ? I look forward to your views on this. Sue

My Grandfather - Charles Thomas Leat. He came over to South Africa in his youth. He married and had (at the last count that we now of!! - 7 children). My late Dad - George Hamlet Leat, never knew of his family, this has spurred me on to now bring us all a little closer. The family resemblance's are truly amazing.

Harry Leat and Decima Irene Leat

Is there anyone who could possibly shed any light on Harry and Decima Irene Leat, who had a son whom they named Barrington Frederick Russel Leat. He was born on 14th April 1929 and the details on birth certificate are: Hendon, Sub District of Harrow, Middlesex. There is a number which I presume is the document number (I am not sure - but it has something to do with the actual birth certificate) it is No.: D 5724 - No. 15.
Barrington's father - Harry has his occupation noted as "Variety and Revue Agent". I would be eternally grateful to anyone who could shed some light on Barrington's parentage. Barry as he became known lived in South Africa for most of his adult life - as far as I know. I have been corresponding with his daughter - Beverley, and we really are hoping that somehow we are related, as apparently when she met my brother, she was "blown over" by the likeness to her now Late Dad - Barrington - Barry. My Great Grand mother was Sarah Leat married to George Edward Leat Born 1853 Sarah (nee Meaker) was born 1856. They had 4 or 5 children that we know of at present. Lived at 72 Charles Street. Sorry I made a huge mistake on this one (the previous one where I said that Emma was George Edward and Sarah's daughter. Correction: George Edward is the link you are looking for, for Sarah who lived with your family line (Brassingtons). Sarah born 1822, is George Edward Leat (born1853) mother. Sarah was married to a John Leat - of whom I am still trying to get further information. Emma therefore was George Edwards sister. So we DO HAVE A LINK! I have managed to trace my family back from my my own father, Wilfred George Leat born 1907 his Father was Robert Leat born 1875. also Roberts mother born 1845 her names Mary Jane Leat, Her father was James Leatt born 1805 he married Jane Drake.
What I am after is 2 things firstly - I am looking for name sof my own dad brothers and sister - I know he had a sister called Florence born 1900. I know he had a few brothers and I am told that some of them marrried into the Woodman family from Morchard Bishop Devon - My father also married a Woodman girl ( my mother Florence Evelyn Woodman).
I would be grateful for any help anyone can offer.
Oh- By the way my Leat family seem to originate from Sidbury Devon at least back as far as James Leatt.

My Great Grandfather - George Edward Leat born 1853 in Hanley married Sarah Meaker. I have limited access to the Ancestry Site, and can only find 4 children of which my grandfather Charles Thomas Leat is one. He came out to South Africa and hence the Leat name has spread here! I would dearly love to speak to anyone who can shed some light on the rest of the family. 1. Sarah Meaker born 1856 in Newcastle Staffordshire - her family & history. 2. Sarah A Leat 1st born or the above marriage - born 1874. 3. Martha Leat born 2nd - 1876. 4. George E. born 1878 and last but not least - my grandfather - Charles Thomas Leat born 1880. John Scott Leat, died Scotland 1754

Came across this on a recent 'graveyarding' expedition in Muiravonside Parish Church Graveyard, near Falkirk, Scotland. The tombstone/monumental inscription reads:

"Here lyes the body of John Scott Leat, Tennant in Manuel who died August 20th 1754 aged 31 years."

I hope this wee snippet is of some use to anyone searchin Leat ancestors.

I am looking for my great grandfather possibly George Leat and noted in Staffordshire BMD that Emma Leat married Charles Brassington in 1875. Sarah Leat married George Boon in 1894 perhaps she was Emmas sister. I think their father may have been George Leat and mother Sarah Meakin who married in 1872.

The simple answer to your question is - I'm not sure!!

I have some records regarding the Baker Leats from Tiverton from the 1881 census. The Leat family (and its variations Leatt, Leate, Lete and Leet) seem to be based in south Devon in the Honiton, Sidbury, Ottery St. Mary area from at least the later 1600's through to present day. It is a relatively uncommon name and as Tiverton is only a few miles away it is most likely that the family groups are connected.

I will see if I can find some more information and try and establish a link.

Strange how these things occur - but this morning I was trying to find out some information about a W. Leat and his wife Gertrude Davies and then along comes your message! Your email has already given me some more information which will help me.

What do I know - very little - W. Leat and Gertrude Davies had a son - Walter Leat b 02 Apr 1920 d 17 Dec 1985 at Alness, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. Walter Leat married Charlotte Wilson and had a daughter Jean, who died 25 Mar 1976 at Alness.
