Hi Jerry. I'm from Los Angeles, CA. My Father-in-law's grandfather was a Leaton (don't know which one) and his Grandmother was an Ortega. The story from all my father-in-law's sisters is that he was a decendant of Ben Leaton.
Our last name is Espinoza. The family is getting older and memories are fading. My husband and I would like to piece together the family history if we can. My father-in-law is Frank R or Francisco Espinoza.

Hi there, I am sory the town of Leaton was a bit of a dissapointment. I had thought of visiting myself, so you have saved me the bother!

You are quite correct in thinking the name Leaton is English. My line has the family name Blenkinsopp Leaton, after the marraige of Anthony Leaton to Elizabeth Blenkinsopp in 1766. Both families go way back further than that though, and can be traced back to the eleventh century, all based in County Durham, in the north of England.

Both were families of influence and wealth, owning several Estates & Castles (all now ruined) - I have only discovered this recently & it's still blowing my mind!

If you would like more information, then by all means let me have your email address, and I will be happy to send you more.

Kind regards, Colin Leaton

I'm not a descendent of William T (rather William H), but I wouldn't mind having what you have of Wm T's descendents.

Funny story, Colin: in the summer of 2006, my sister, wife, and I went to England for a number of reasons. A minor reason was to check out Leaton in Shropshire--just north of Shrewsbury. We eventually found it, and found that it was simply an industrial estate. No Leatons lived in the area, but the Leaton cathedral (built in the late 19th century) is there. I talked to the vicar next door, and she didn't know much about why the place was called Leaton. A few years later, I found out the place was named for Hugh de Leton, who owned the area in the 14th century but lost it to gambling debts.

Ben Leaton of Fort Leaton was the son of William Leaton and Susannah Hunter of Franklin, TN. William was the son of Hugh Leaton and Mary Snead (or Jones) of Montgomery County, NC. Hugh was the son of William (also of NC but then of TN and KY), who I call Old William (because there are a bunch of Williams in the line). Old William is a brick wall at this point. He could have come through VA or SC. Based on circumstantial cultural evidence, I'm fairly certain the line runs through England. Where, though . . .

Yes, Reuben and William were brothers. William Hugh Leaton and Editha Sledd were married November 20, 1828 in Warren County, KY. William died on August 26, 1832 in Lafayette County, MO, where he had purchased land (source: land and probate records in Lafayette Cty). After his death, Editha married Reuben and they moved to Livingston County, near the cemetery.
William and Editha had three children, Hugh, Dell L., and William S Leaton. I show Dell (D.L.) as being born on December 20, 1831 in Virginia. Editha's family was from Virginia. Somewhere I have an obituary for Editha and a picture of D.L. late in his life. Please let me know if you would like a copy of either.

He had two wifes, Lena C. and Harriet Anna ? Leaton. D. L. and Lena (Cenia C. in the cem recs.) are buried in the Leaton Cem. in Livingston Co., Mo. with Editha and D. L siblings. William H. must be D. L.'s father as DL was born before the marriage of Rueben and Editha. Can You help ?
Thanks
Kay

Yes, I think I am following the wrong branch. I am beginning to think that my grandfather's mother was a grand daughter of Ben Leaton, from one of his two sons. If that is the case, than we wouldn't be related to the Ochoas, which my mother claims are relatives. My grandfather Jesus was born in 1888. He told me when I was about 6 old that he was born in El Fortin. Ben'[s wife was Juana Pedraza, who had three children by Ben Leaton, two sons and a daughter, Elizabeth. After Ben was murdered, Juana, married a Hall, and remained in El Fortin. El Fortin was abandoned around 1922, when the Burgess's tried to collect on a note. So What I am gathering is that the extended family lived in El Fortin, since my grandfather was born there in 1888.

Thank you for the information. I could be a generation off. I beleive my grandfather Jesus Leaton Espinoza was born in the 1880s. He died in 1965 at age 77 or so. His mother may have been the daughter of one of the two Sons Ben Leaton had. I don't know their names. But my mothe claims the Ochoas as relatives. However, according to the succession of husbands Isabel had, Espinoza in not mentioned anywhere. I will check marrigage records as you suggest. I recently read a book, "El Diablo en Texas" by Aristeo Brito. The first third of the book is about Don Ben, but never mentions his last name. But he established the trading post at El Fortin.

Another possibility is that your grand mother or great grandmother was not Isabel (Leaton?) Ochoa, daughter of Victor Leaton Ochoa and Juana Sanchez, but that she was indeed Victor's mother, Isabel Leaton. Perhaps her husband Juan Ochoa died and Isabel Leaton then married Cruz Espinoza. Have you checked any marriage or death records for El Fortin area? That would be your best bet.

As mentioned in my earlier post, Victor Leaton Ochoa (the famous aviator/inventor/revolutionary/editor) had three children with Juana Sanchez, one of whom was named Isabel. Perhaps Isabel married your grandfather.

Juana Sanchez, according to my grandfather, was shot by assassins who were trying to kill Victor because he was reporting on corruption through his newspaper in Las Vegas New Mexico. Perhaps looking at birth/death records there may give some clues. Victor went on to remarry and had my grandfather with his second wife.

I look just like her and it is weird how similar my german husband looks like my grandfather Gustavo Garcia. No one seems to know when Isabel married who and her actual birth. I will keep getting pieces to figure it all out. Esteban had a wife name Graviella Lujan? She died? He then married another woman and had 4 more children. Very interesting.
The story passed down in the family was that Juan Ochoa was killed by indians while out getting wood with his sons, Victor Leaton Ochoa and Esteban Ochoa. After Juan died, his wife Isabel Leaton Ochoa married a Frank Shirley. My great grandfather Victor Leaton Ochoa had dreamed about the indian attack several days beforehand, and when he had told his father, he had slapped him in the face and said not to say such things. (I have inherited the gift/burden of foresight dreams). On the day of the attack, the indians shot Juan Ochoa with arrows. The two boys loaded him onto the wagon and shot at the indians with Victors new rifle, that he had just received a few days before. They got to Ft. Leaton and their father died. Also from family stories: Victor Leaton Ochoa's first wife Juana Sanchez, was murdered by assasins trying to shoot him (Victor) in Las Vegas New Mexico (supposedly there is an historic marker there about it). He had been uncovering corruption there as a newspaper editor, and therefore the hitmen hired to kill him. His daughter STella had witnessed the killing of her mother.

So there are several Estebans, Juans and Victor Ochoa's so it gets confusing.

Here is what my grandfather, Esteban Leaton Ochoa, said about our family tree:
Ben Leaton was from Kentucky, his family came from Scotland.. He married Juanita?? who was visiting with her family from Spain (?). The had a daughter Isabel Leaton, who married Juan Ochoa, from Spain and Chihuahua Mexico. When Ben died in 1851, Juanita married Ed Hall.

Juan and Isabel (Leaton) Ochoa had Victor Leaton Ochoa in 1851 (my great grandfather), Lucia, Esteban, Eduardo and Enrique Ochoa.
Victor Leaton Ochoa (son of Juan Ochoa and Isabel Leaton) married Juana Sanchez and had Sam, Stella and Isabel Ochoa.

So, there are TWO Isabel Ochoa's. One, Isabel Leaton Ochoa (Ochoa by marriage), and Isabel Ochoa the daughter of Victor Leaton Ochoa and Juana Sanchez. Victor married again and had Esteban Leaton Ochoa (my grandfather) and Lucia Ochoa, who married Albert Northcopp.

Elizabeth Leaton was called Isabel Ochoa through a marriage to Juan Ochoa. We did not know about when marriages took place. My father is Benjamin Garcia the youngest of six children and his mother was Isabel Ochoa, daughter of Elizabeth Lujan Ochoa. Her grave is in the Ochoa Cemetary in Presidio, Texas and the last married name was Shirley. She apparently married a Frank Shirley after Juan Ochoa. A great grandaughter changed the stone (without permission from some family members) as she wanted everyone to remember her as Ben Leaton's daughter. The grave says she was born in 1843 which is impossible as her eldest son Victor Ochoa was born in 1851. I am trying to help the only two remaining sons of Isabel Ochoa Garcia to find out as much information about her. Thanks for responding so quickly.

I know Ben Leaton had two sons and a daughter, Isabel or Elizabeth Leaton. My grandfather Jesus Leaton Espinoza told me that was his mother;s name, that he was born in El Fortin (circa 1884). He also said his father's name was Cruz Espinoza. How many times and to what men did Elizabeth Leaton marry? My mother Consuelo, now age 90, was Jesus' daughter. She was raised as Corrales, later hernandez, and married Frank Nieto Lujan from El polvo. I need to fill some gaps, mainly who was Cruz Espinoza. My mother says we are related to the aOchoas, and quintanas from Porvenir en Candelaria.
