How solid is Milly Tabor as the wife of John? Is is based on the name of their son? I have an alternative, but don't need to chase it if there is documentation on Tabor as a maiden name. You can e-mail me directly at alynneromo@gmail.com

Re: Hardie D. Leavell

Hurrah! You cleared up all sorts of confusion. I'm sure you're right about the confusion caused by Hardie H. Leavell appearing with the Cork family in the census. While I had the census and WWI records, and found birth references for Elisa and Lloyd Bentsen, I didn't have the obit or any knowledge of another son, and the posted trees on ancestry.com called him "Hardie Devon Leavell Jr." which wouldn't be correct if he was the son of "Hardy Duncan Leavell," so I never would have figured this out.

In case you don't have it, I also found these. (Notice the different birth dates):
WORLD WAR II DRAFT REGISTRATION (1942)
Name: Hardie Duncan Leavell
Event: Military Event
Date: 1942
Event Place: Edinburg, Hidalgo, Texas
Residence: Edinburg, Hidalgo, Texas
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 06 Dec 1881
Film Number: 4150788
Digital Folder Number: 4150788
Image Number: 01125

TEXAS DEATHS, 1890-1976 (familysearch.org)
Name: Hardie Duncan Leavelle
Death Date: 11 Dec 1949
Death Place: Raymondville, Willacy, Texas
Gender: Male
Race: White
Death Age: 67 years 2 days
Estimated Birth Date:
Birth Date: 09 Dec 1882
Birthplace: Alabama
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name:
Father's Name: John Wilbirn Leavelle
Father's Birthplace: Ala.
Mother's Name: Mollie Elizabeth Hopkins
Mother's Birthplace: Ala.
Occupation: Farmer
Place of Residence: Raymondville, Willacy, Texas
Cemetery: Raymondville Cemetery
Burial Place:
Burial Date: 15 Dec 1949
Additional Relatives:
Film Number: 2223549
Digital Film Number: 4031938
Image Number: 668
Reference Number: 61612

Thanks again!

Re: Hardie D. Leavell

Jane,
Hardie Duncan Leavell was born December 9, 1992 in West Greene, Green County, Alabama, son of John Wilburn Leavell and Mary Elizabeth Hopkins. On July 20, 1902 in Henderson County, Texas he married Nettie Ida Godley. They had 6 children. In 1939 he married Eliza Lopez in New Mexico, and they had 5 children. One of the sons with Eliza Lopez is Hardie Devon Leavell, b. 1939. I can't find an source that shows a son named Hardie as a child of James Andrew Leavell and Martha A.P. Cork. John Wilburn Leavell and family were living in Green County, Alabama in 1900, and I suspect the fact their son Hardie was in the household with Martha A. Cork in that county has caused confusion, since James Andrew Leavell and family are living nearby. In 1918 Hardie gives a birth date of December 6, 1881 on his draft registration in Marion County, Texas. In 1920 he's with wife Nettie and kids in Marion County, Texas, and in 1930 with wife Nettie and kids in Hemet, Riverside, California. Let me know if you want any additional information.
Judi
Here is a copy of the obituary for Hardie Duncan Leavell:
Valley Morning Star
Harlingen, Texas
Friday, December 16, 1949
Hardie D. Leavelle Funeral Rites Today
Raymondville - Funeral services for Hardie Duncan Leavelle 67 who died Sunday night at his home in the Lasara community west of here, will be held Friday at 2 pm in the Owens Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in the Raymondville cemetery
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Eliza Leavelle of the Lasara realdence two sons Devan and Lloyd B. Leavelle also of Lasara and one daughter, Lavan Leavelle Lasara two step daughters, Ramonna and Estelle Lucero, Lasara, two step sons Gilbert and Julian Lucero, Lasaara four sons by a former marriage Aubrey, Burbank Calif Travis, and and Elvin Leavelle both of Fresnos Calif and Alton Leavelle of Grand Quevera, N Mex two daughters by a former marriage Mrs Velma Wallace and Mrs Evely Lindbeck both of Beaver Falls Pa one brother, J W Leavelle of Eutau Ala twenty six grandchilren and two great grandchildren
Nore: Typed as it appeared in the paper - with limited punctuation and several words misspelled.

Hardie D. Leavell

This Hardie D. Leavell was born 06 Dec 1881 Alabama to James Andrew Leavell and Martha A. P. Cork, and then just disappears. He's not the Hardie Duncan Leavell born 09 Dec 1882 Alabama to John Wilburn Leavelle and Mary Elizabeth Hopkins; that guy married Nettie Godley, died in Texas, and shows up in the census. Hardie D. Leavell doesn't. Any clues? Is he related to the Hardie Devon Leavell Jr. of Harris County, Texas, who was born in 1939 and married Oleta McDaniel? Or the Hardy Duncan Leavell who was married to Elisa Lopez in Texas in the 1930's?

I was saddened to learn today of Nadine's passing. We had corresponded for several years and I enjoyed her long and informative emails. She was a generous person who willingly shared what she had learned about the Leavell and Wilson families with me. I wish I could have met her in person. I always looked forward to hearing from her, and would open her email with anticipation of some new treasure she would share with me. I will miss her very much. I have been trying to reconnect with her for quite a while with no success. I suspected something was wrong, but I didn't know for sure until I saw the obit post today. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren and shared that with me. If I knew how to reach her family, I would tell them that she made an impact on my life that will never be forgotten, and for which I am truly grateful.

I have Robert Anderson Leavell, born February 9, 1914 in Georgia (notice different birth date than you have), son of Artis Franklin Leavell and Addie Lena Hope.
Lena Hope Leavell; Robert A. Leavell; in Georgia

In researching my mother's paternal line, I learned my great aunt had a son whose last name was Leavell. The aunt’s name was Addie Lena Hope (b. 29 Aug 1886 in Barrettsville (Yellow Creek) Dawson County, GA.; d. 15 Jan 1969 in Lawrenceville, Gwinett Co., GA.)

Her son's name was Robert A. Leavell (b. 23 Nov 1911 in GA.; d. 08 Apr 1977 in Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA.)

According to the 1910 census, at about age 24, Lena was single and living in Big Shanty, Cobb Co., GA. with her parents, William Ellison Hope, SR. and Sarah Caroline (Logan) Hope.

By the 1920 census, she is listed as a widow and is living in Philips Mill, Coffee County, GA., with her 8-year old son, Robert. Her parents have moved from Big Shanty; Lena and Robert are living with them.

In the 1930 census, she’s living with her parents in Ambrose, Coffee Co., GA., with 17-year old Robert.

I cannot find any further record on either Lena or Robert until their deaths.

Also noted on the 1930 census is when Lena first married, which was age 24. Assuming she married sometime shortly after the 1910 census was taken, it seems reasonable to think the groom was also from Cobb County. There were a bazillion Leavell males in Cobb County, Georgia, but I’ve not been able to locate anything in the way of a marriage for Lena Hope and a man with the last name of Leavell, or a death record for (Mr.) Leavell.

Can anyone please help shed some light on this mystery?

carol

Was browsing through old messages and came across this one. I case you have not already gotten the info, Margie Leavell was married to my dad's brother Claude Leavell. They lived in Springhill, KS. I have her name as Anna Margaret. She was born 1/27/1918. Married Claude 3/17/1934 (very young bride) and died 7/25/2007. They had two children: Claude Leon, born 10/9/1937 and Kathy Ann born 9/15/1949.

Do you have an approximate birth or death date for your grandfather? There are several Theodore Leavell/Lavelle in Pennsylvania. Do you know his middle name or initial? Sometimes individuals used thier middle name on documents rather than a first name. Does your Leavell parent know the names of any aunts or uncles and thier approximate ages? If they were born before 1930 you might search for them in census reports and it could provide you with more clues. If you know where he is buried you could check cemetery records for what information they might have. Also if there any other Leavell's buried there.

Hi,and thanks again! The 03 Dec 1906 date matches the Date in family records along with the Marriage.

License the reason for thinking that Jim or James Leavell and Susan Overton might be the parents is because Manlove Overton and Dora were also first cousins and I believe it occurred more than once during slavery and definitely after slavery.

Would church records show anything since we were so active and heavily represented in the Methodist church info?....Frank L. Overton was Ordained in the African Methodist Episcal Church, ManLove's Dad...I suspect is also a Leavell because of his middle Intial, not certain on anyone but Frank, and Manlove, I can't find my Overton family unless I find my Leavell family because at some points in time they are one and the same people

1) This is the Leavell message board, not a board for African-American genealogy issues. Your question should be specifically detailed with Leavell data. The word "Leavell" is nowhere near enough.
2) Leavell is traditionally said to be a name of Huguenot French origins. However, I've found it in Irish American families, too. This needs a lot more research before we can say definitively.
3) Do you know whether the slaves with American president names were named by their masters, not by their parents' choices? That could make a difference.
4) African-Americans may have chosen the names of powerful people for the same reason that white Leavells often named their children after presidents and war heroes like the Swamp Fox--they admired those people and wanted their children to live up to those names and reputations. I have wondered why, once freed, they used the surnames of their masters. Was it out of habit, to identify them as coming from that community? Was it because they had common bloodlines with their masters, and felt entitled to the surname?

Please I need help in finding my families: OVERTON, the OVERTON-MILAM connection, the OVERTON-JOHNSON-MILAM connection, the LEAVELL-OVERTON, I believe most of this history begins In Colonial America between the early to mid 17th Century thru to the late 19th and early turn of the 20th Century VA, KY,NC,TN.....question prior to reconstruction....why did the slaves regardless of station in service to their Slave Master's and regardless to their (the Slave-masters)Social order in the Old South, with that being said why name practicably every male child repeatedly the names of Presidents during the colonial periods of early America....even before America was America.....and this is just what I have observed with my family regardless of surnames....sometimes this was done in one single family Branch or twig??! this is why I have so much confusion thrying to find who is who, when you have five who have the same name and born in the same family with similar dates of birth.....Oops!, I also need to know the European Surname connection (America/American first).

Nadine loved researching her family roots and never hesitated to share the wealth of information and pictures she had acquired on her Leavell side of the family. She cherished the friendships she developed with many other researchers. Picture of Nadine and guest book at www.rosehills.com.

Obituary
JANUARY 2, 1928 - APRIL 28, 2010

Sybil Nadine Wilson, beloved mother, grandmother and friend passed away unexpectedly at her home in Castaic, California on April 28, 2010.
Re: Leavelle's in Hopkinsville, KY

Hello William,
My full name is Octavia Greene and I currently live in Philadelphia, PA. I ran across your entry on Rootsweb when I was surfing the Internet for some family names.

I entered Rozelle Leavell and your comment was attached to a notice from the Louisville Courier-Journal, about Rozelle's passing. He called us about a year before he passed and my mom had a good conversation with him. The last time I saw him was when I was in college at Spelman, '68-'72. He was in Atlanta with another person from Hopkinsville. They had someone they knew from the AU Center get a hold of my class schedule and dropped in to see me. :-)

Besides the sisters you mentioned in your post there were at least two others that come to mind - Ora Lee and Virgina. I knew Lucille and Virginia. I don't remember Ora Lee, but I know she passed in the 70's. I think she was the eldest of the sisters from your grandfather's first family. Laura Lou died before my mom married. She was your dad's full sister, the others were his half-sisters.

The Leavells come in on my mother's maternal side. Her maternal grandmother was a Leavell, whose father died in the Civil War.

I saw your name in an obiturary that was sent to me by someone in Hopkinsville about your dad's passing, along with your brother and sister's names. I just didn't have information on how to contact any of you. I knew your brother Tony when he was a baby. I doubt if he would remember me. I was born in Hopkinsville, and as a matter of fact lived next door to your grandmother Anna Penn Leavelle. To me she was Cousin Anna. My mom, Mary Frances Robinson Greene said Cousin Anna was related to us also on my grandfather Walter Robinson's side. I don't know how exactly, but that's more searching to do later.

We called your dad Brother, that was his nickname for us. He and my mom taught school in Hopkinsville before we moved up here to Philly. I knew he had moved to Chicago, but we never had his address.
Are you actively engaged in family history research? I've been doing it for a number of years now, but need to get a bit more organized than I am. :-)

I'm not sure when you will see this entry, but you can contact me directly at my home email:

Octavia714@hotmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you.

Your cousin,
Octavia

Looking to make a connection with anyone who has any information about Leonard and Dorothy Leavell, who lived in Vista California.

I am trying to confirm if Dorothy M Leavell was born Dorothy Marie Brosky in New Kensington, PA. Dorothy Brosky was born in 1916. Dorothy Leavell was also born in 1916 and died in Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, California in 2004. I am descended from the Brosky family of New Kensington.

A Nevada newspaper clipping from the 1940's shows a Leonard Leavell married a Dorothy Brosky, but that's all I have.

Any information would be appreciated

Do you know the names of Kirby Joe Leavell's parents? He is listed in the index of a Pope County, Arkansas book, but I don't have access to the book itself. With a little more info, I might be able to hook him up to one of the Leavell lines I'm tracking at http://littlecalamity.tripod.com/Leavell.html. Only census records from 1930 and back are open to the public, so I can't find Danny or Kirby at ancestry.com but maybe another generation or so back....

I am working with some of our cousins (grandkids of Chloe and Cap) and if all of us share with each other we should be able put together all this side of the family.

Judy Foster Reed
