Leeds family of Groton and New London Connecticut

I am seeking information on the family of my 3rd great grandmother Jane Leeds b. 1815 in New London, m. William Geer Bailey of Groton in 1836. From census records it appears she had three sisters: Abby Leeds b. 1812 m. Franklin Gardiner, Nancy Leeds b.1799 m. Amos Stark and Emily Leeds b. 1808 m. ? Ridabock. I believe their father was Jonathan Leeds 1768-1859, but can't figure out who Jonathan's parents were. The story passed down in our family was that we were descended from Capt. Cary Leeds who faught in the Battle of Groton Heights - but this does not seem to be the case. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi - in trying to find something about my ancestors, I came across reference to John Leeds ina book: Wild Ride - The rise & fall of Cobb & Co. by Sam Everingham, Viking, 2007.

There is next to no detail on John. But a lot on their son, Arthur & quite a lot on daughter, Bella. Arthur died in 1935 & is buried at Carcoar, NSW.

[My ancestor was also John Leeds, born 1844, at Longham, Norfolk, UK & married to Ann Maria Kay. I didn't pursue the other John Leeds when I discovered we're probably not related - or at least, not closely!].

Hope this is helpful,
Marilyn Leeds.

James Leeds born April 4, 1794 died March 29, 1872
Was married to Dorcas Adams - b January 26, 1803 d March 28,1839
These were the parents of Lewis Leeds - b October 27, 1835 d December 14, 1863. Lewis was dad's grandfather. That makes James our g-g-grandfather

James had two other wives - one before and one after Dorcas.

I believe this is the man for whom Jim Leeds (Jimmy Leeds) Road (New Jersey Route 633) was named. According to Lewis Benjamin Leeds (9/18/1885 - 2/5/1961) James Leeds earned his living by buying oysters from the oystermen at Absecon Bay and carting them inland - perhaps to a railroad station where they would be shipped to Philadelphia. He shortened his daily trip with horse and wagon by getting permission to cut across a farmer's land. Over the years, his wagon created a distinct path and others began to use it. Those others referred to the road as Jim Leeds' road. The name stuck.

Pat - I don't know if this is your James Leeds or not, but when what is now called Jimmie Leeds Road was first laid out in 1826, the road began at "a stake in the middle of the road leading from Absecon Bridge to Tanners Brook known by the main [sic] Shore Road between Parker & Daniel Cordery's and James Leeds and James Smith near the said Jas. Leeds shoemakers shop", and ran from there to the road leading from Absecon to Cedar Bridge. Gloucester County Road Book C, pp. 65-67. A map accompanying the road return shows James Leeds located on the corner on west side of Shore Road and north of the new road. The road got it's name before 1839 when a deed from Peter Boice Sr. to Peter Boice Jr. mentioned "what is called the James Leeds road". Atl. Co. Deeds D:291. The 1872 Beers map of Atlantic County doesn't show anyone named Leeds in the area where Jimmie Leeds Road meets Shore Road. The nearest residents identified are C.W. Mathews, Geo. Mathews, E. Ivins, A. Adams & P. Boice.

Hope this helps. If you want copies of any of these records, let me know.

Jerry

I have one James Leeds in my database, b 1712 to Japeth Leeds and Deborah Smith. Japeth was s/o Daniel and Dorothy (Young) Leeds. Daniel was s/o immigrant Thomas Leeds. I've primarily followed my children's direct line, through Robert Leeds s/o Jonathon and Amy (Stanton) Leeds. Robert m Margaret Leeds d/o Soloman and Martha (Farrow) Leeds. Jonathon and Soloman were brothers, sons of Robert and Abigail (Higbee) Leeds. Robert was s/o Japeth and Deborah (Smith) Leeds.

I don't know the names of James' wife or children, but it would bear looking at because so many names were repeated in families. I don't know if you are looking for parents for your James, but thought I'd give you what I have. Let me know if you have any questions I might be able to answer.

John Morgan worked with George Leeds on much of the woodwork inside Cranbrook Church mainly in the 1730s. They built the pulpit and sounding board (presently lying at the back of the church), pews and much more-see details in the Churchwardens a/cs.

Dear Sarah
I have sent a more complete response to your e-mail address, however it appears that I must respond via roots web. I am extremely excited by your e-mail as we have always assumed a family connection to Leeds village although most of my early ancestors lived at Benenden in Kent. As regards our family tree I would be glad to provide you with a copy. I use Family Tree Maker 2009. If you do not have this I could always provide the software as well. I think it would be more practical if we contact each other directly. I live at Petts Wood and my e-mail address is m.leeds@ntlworld.com

With best wishes

Michael Leeds

I would be interested in obtaining the comprehensive Leeds family tree that you have going back to the 15th century. My family is based in Kent and all come from an area near the village called Leeds, so I most certainly think this family tree relates back to my relatives.

Regards

Sarah Leeds. at sarahleeds@btinternet.com

Thank you! I was sent your post this morning, but hadn't received the others (overactive spam filter, probably). The Daniel Owens info is consistent with what I recall it's very interesting to me, as my line goes through Jimmy Leeds' grandson James Conover, who named his first son Dan Owen Conover, and hid second (my ancestor) Frank. The name Frank appears again in that same generation, so I expect it's meaningful. Not sure if I've posted that- hard to read it all on the little phone. I'll check later.
I live in Oregon, so my visits are few and well-spaced. Still, this is my favorite ancestor, so I may just follow up. I think I did go to the county or even township office. I'll need to check the notes.
Thanks for the info & comments. I hope to share research with you.

By the way, Jimmie Leeds Road is in Galloway, that's "main street Galloway" now. It used to be a nice quiet rural area but now it's really built up, esp. in the last 10 years.

So, there is a possiblity your Jimmie is "the" Jimmie of the road. On your next visit to Atlantic County, you might stop by the county historical society and see if they have any info on his birth or the naming of Jimmie Leeds Road; it's in Somers Pt. near the circle, I think. You can check their website for hours and location. Go early, I haven't been in years but it was very low tech, staffed by elderly volunteers, no computer files, only a xerox machine and lots of books. ;)

It appears there was a third Daniel Owen, the third time's the charm...1860 census for Galloway (between Absecon and Leeds Pt.) shows 16-year-old Daniel O. Leeds living with parents James (age 65) and Martha (age 53) and little sister Dorcas, age 5, apparently named for wife #2?

(There he is also, in the 1850 census for Galloway, at age 6 with more siblings.)

In 1880 it looks like he's an oyster dealer in Camden, NJ living with wife Mary E. and 1 year old Frank H. Leeds, if the same Daniel Owen. I suspect so.

In 1900 he's in Long Beach, Ocean Co., gave his actual birthdate as Nov 1843, and was still married to Mary Emma, had son Daniel O. Jr., age 9. Mary was born in PA.

In 1910 he's still with wife and son, they are going by Emma and Owen, respctively. They were living in Collingswood (Camden Co., NJ)

After that I lose them.

Maybe you can find his birth record, Nov. 1843, probably born in Galloway, Atlantic County, NJ.

Oh dear, and as I'm about to send this reply I realize it's over 4 years old. Well, maybe there'll be something in there you haven't found yet.

I am a direct descendant of Hannah Naglee Leeds dob 1810, who married Charles Wills. I am looking for "Ann Leeds" born 1810. I have their samplers so am certain of dob. I always assumed they were sisters, but apparnetly not. Hannah had a cousin "mary Ann Leeds" born 1810 and I'm not sure if that is her. Can you help?

(I love the jersey devil story!)

I also have Clermont County Ohio Leeds in my line. However, I'm afraid I won't be much help to you directly. I don’t have George Leeds or the Kentucky Leeds in my line that I know of. However, thought I would share what I have.

1 Franklin Leeds (1817 - 1885) b: 25 Dec 1817 in Batavia, Clermont, Ohio, d: 23 Jun 1885 in Robinson, Crawford Co, Illinois
+ Louina Workman m: 01 Jan 1843 in Batavia, Clermont Co, Ohio
2 Benjamin Leeds (1844 - ) b: Abt. 1844 in Ohio
+ Sarah Shackelford (1826 - 1863) b: Abt. 1826 in Ohio, m: 30 Aug 1847 in Troy, Miami, Ohio, USA, d: Bef. 1863
2 Robert Leeds (1847 - ) b: Abt. 1847 in Ohio
2 Albert Leeds (1848 - ) b: Abt. 1848 in Ohio
2 Margaret M Leeds (1849 - 1917) b: 24 Oct 1849 in Indiana, d: 25 Jan 1917 in Crawford, Illinois, USA
+ W H Myer
2 Viola Leeds (1856 - ) b: Abt. 1856 in Indiana
+ Maria Sanders (1841 - 1887) b: Abt. 1841 in Illinois, m: 22 Aug 1863 in Robinson, Crawford, Illinois, d: 12 Jun 1887 in Martin, Crawford, Illinois
2 Thomas Franklin Leeds (1864 - 1931) b: 10 May 1864 in Crawford, Illinois, USA, d: 25 Oct 1931 in Little River, Arkansas
+ Martha Ellen Alexander (1869 - 1903) b: Jun 1869 in Clay, Indiana, m: 24 Sep 1887 in Crawford, Illinois, d: Oct 1903
2 Stafford Leeds (1869 - 1945) b: Abt. 1869 in Illinois, d: 27 Jun 1945 in Moberly, Randolph, Missouri
+ Mary E Unknown (1869 - 1940) b: 22 Dec 1869 in Indiana, d: 16 Jan 1940 in Moberly, Randolph, Missouri
2 Charles Leeds (1876 - ) b: 04 Jan 1876 in Illinois
+ Minerva Anne Mikeworth (1883 - ) b: Abt. 1883 in Illinois, m: 04 Feb 1900
2 Seth Leeds (1882 - ) b: 28 Feb 1882 in Illinois

Our big family mystery is WHO were Franklin Leeds’ parents?!!! No one seems to know. There is some thought that he is the son of Robert Leeds and Margaret Rambo (Frank Leeds.) However, I have seen that Frank Leeds' birth date listed as 1843, which if that is fact, would make him too young to be my Franklin. I also have seen that “Frank” as Frances M, a girl. Could there be a Franklin and a Frances in that family?

We do know that my Franklin married Louina (or Lavinia) Workman. Franklin and Louina/Lavinia had one son - Benjamin. There is a Benjamin Workman living in Williamsburg, Clermont County, Ohio in 1850. Possibly Louina/Lavinia’s father?

Leeds men living in Williamsburg at that time and who would be of an age to have sired Franklin include:
John Leeds, b 1788, New Jersey, m. Antis White
Timothy Leeds, b 1791, New Jersey, m. Rebecca
Robert Leeds, b 1791, New Jersey, m. Margaret Rambo (Franklin has a son, Robert, and a daughter, Margaret. My mother tells me there were strong naming traditions in our Leeds line.)

It's usually told of the wife of Daniel Leeds, several generations back, and there's even an historically-based but imaginative fictional account, Brigid's Charge, I think, written by a descendant of that marriage.

This Jimmy Leeds, though, is buried at the Presbyterian Church, with his 3rd wife, I think (I'm descended from wife #1.)

Thanks so much for answering!
Pat

I am sorry but those names are not in my line. I did find a George M. Leeds married Cata Miller on 20 March 1815 in Bourbon County, KY. This information was found on www.familysearch.org website and is free. Also, try googling the counties for their genealogical society. A lot of times there are lookup volunteers. Also, google your GG name and sometimes you will find that someone has a family tree. Good luck! I wish I could help more!
