Margery Millett is my mother's first cousin. Her mother. Angus and my grandmother. Elizabeth were sisters. I have been e-mailing Margery for about two years now but recently she stopped replying and I don't know why. Are you related to the Lees side of the family because if you are we are also related.

I live in Wales, UK but am travelling to Scotland on the 2nd June to find out where Elizabeth is buried in Coatbridge. Would love to hear from you and we could swap family histories.
Is the confusion between Joseph bap. 1795 son of Benjamin and Joseph bap. 1796 son of James? Looking at W. Yorkshire parish records index on Ancestry, it shows a few possible siblings for both Josephs.
You could try tracking each sibling to census returns which might help to make the relationships clearer. It's a long shot but doing this has helped me in a similar situation.

Some trees/genealogies out there list this Dorcas/Spence connection. Spence Monroe the presidents dad, supposedly got his name from his Spence grandparents from the said Dorcas/Spence-Ann Lee/Yuoell tree. Any thoughts or knowledge regarding this would be most helpful.
LEES DNA

Hello all,

I want to make mention the DNA testing that Ancestry.com offers. Our LEES in Canada recently did the DNA testing along with a potential cousin (in Scotland) to confirm a line in the Scottish Lowlands we had been searching for 8 years.

We were 99 percent sure we were in the line which we had traced back to the mid 1700's, but needed documentation to prove it. After 8 years of looking we thought the DNA testing was the best path. And it proved very successful! Not only were we related we were only 3 generations apart instead of the 7 we thought we were. But that's another story.

Consequently due to the testing, we have now connected with another researcher who has also done the DNA testing through Ancestry. He is a LEE and has roots in Northern England. He is a part of a one name DNA project for LEE. I have sent my DNA to the group in hopes of further connections. Also very recently there has been a new one name group project started for LEES. I will be sending my DNA to them shortly.

I encourage you to check out the DNA option on Ancestry. It will help your research immensely. If you have any questions about our experience do not hesitate to make contact through this list.

Best Regards,
Jamie Lees
CANADA

The ages are right and so is the area for William and James to have been related.I did find out that in that area in England there is a Lees Village still around. Hope this can help

Hi; no problem. I often dont check for months myself. Here is what I have from my own research and from my Uncle Jack. My grandfather is James Henry Lees; his is in the 1910 census and is 20. His parents are George W. Lees, 49 at the time, and Mariah Lees, 47 at the time. She lists her birth as Ireland, 1863, and her emigration date as 1876. George was born in Penna, but lists his father as being born in England and his mother in Scotland. My uncle thinks Mariah was born in Belfast, but as you know, we are not certain of her maiden name--it may be Otis, or Oates, or Oshi. They had another sone named George and he is 15 in 1910 and works in a spinning mill. That was very common for the Irish. George married Elizabeth (Uncle Jack did not know her maiden name) but he did remember their daughter Rita. He thinks they were married in St. George's Episcopal Church (family is both Catholic and Protestant) Someone--may have been either Elizabeth or Rita, owned a bar in Wildwood called Dot's Place. Someone--may have been George--worked in the post office and someone somewhere along the line, was an assistant police commissioner. Does any of this sound right? Lorraine

He did not know Elizabeth's maiden name but he confirmed that I did know her as a child. I remember both her and George at my grandfather's wake when I was about 11. Is that possible? I have to check the dates. He thinks Mariah was born in northern Ireland, either Belfast or Londonderry but he also thinks the name might have been Oshi. That really does not sound right to me but we can look around. Otis or Oates sounds better but perhaps O'Shea? More later.

Hi Narni
I'm not sure at this pont. They could be. I would have to be able to connect Nephi to William to ??? to this John. I don't know whao Willaims parents were. I'm still trying to find information on him and his family. I didn't even know my Great Great Grandfather even had siblings. Their names were David, Mary and Moroni, which I'm sure has to be a mispelling. My Grandfather's name was John so it's a real possiblity. I would need to find the generation in between. William was born in 1812, but not sure when or where he died.
Thanks for the tip though, I'll see if I can link it to them. I never realized Lees was such a common name. I knew Lee was, but not ones with the S on the end.
Sharon

Welcome aboard the Lees train!
If you tracked them to England maybe we are all one big happy family.
We only have 1 living male on my branch of the tree and he lived in Texas. I'm in NY. I have had contact from my Grandfather's sister's family.
How did you find the ones in Scotland before the ones in England? I have been trying to find the parents of the kid and back tracking from that one. Am I doing this wrong??? The problem is I don't know names so knowing you have the right Lees is hard with so many of them. Kind of like trying to track Smith or Brown.
I've found so much with wrong dates and spelling (that actually are conneceted), I'm not sure I'd trust a DNA link. How is that really different than just connecting with those searching for Lees??? I already found a shirt tail cousin, but they didn't have as much history as I had found.
How did it help you?

Hi all speaking about being tracked down to the beginning... if you are interested you might consider getting a LEES male in the family to participate in the Ancestry dot com DNA testing. Our LEES group has done this with some very good results.

I am in a LEES research group and our LEES were primarily from Scotland but now through the DNA testing have connected with England.

If you need any more info about it, feel free to email me.

Jamie

The ages don't quite fit, but that is not unusual in census returns, especially those that include the 1841 census as the ages were rounded making them unreliable.
Don't discount this family because the details may not fit exactly, but don't assume that they are either. Look for proof through other family members in the USA - search for the parents and siblings to prove (or not) that this is your family, they probably lived and died in the same area as Nephi.
I think William born 1840 may have died by 1851 and Nephi is likely Hephatali whose birth year is recorded as 1843, only 1 year's difference from your Nephi.
In England civil registration began in 1837, if you can prove from research in the USA that this is your family, the next step is to check parish records which may or may not be online. If you join a family history society for that area they can give you valuable local advice on how to proceed (if you are lucky you may even have a distant cousin as a member). I think Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society may be the one for that area and you can join online.
No I don't live in England but in Papua New Guinea which is about as far as I can get from my origins. In our situation, it is very useful to learn how to use search engines effectively. Apart from aiding personal research, you may find someone else interested in the same family so you can swap notes.

Not finding them in the 1861 census makes sense. I think they may have actually came in 1855, except I can't find any records.
I don't think I'm doing so hot with this family searching. LOL When I tried to find records in England for 41 census that was the one they didn't have. Some of Lancashire's records only go back to 1837 too. Going to be hard to track back to William's parents.

I don't think that's the same family. Even if Nephia was William the age span between Mary and William doesn't fit when you match 51 to the 41 census.

Something else I found last night. After doing some more searching, I discovered the suggested arrival dates are wrong. They couldn't have emigrated in 41 like the record shows because Nephia was born in Heaton Norris in 1842. I think what my grandmother might have meant was Nephi lied about his age once he got here so he could get work.

I spent today trying to search the OPC site trying to find more. www.lan-opc.org.uk/indexp.html
How do you join a society?
Happy to help. I have just looked at a page either side of your family on the 1841 census and found 2 other Lees families - James & Thomas Lees who were both Hatters too. You'll need to go to parish records now, it may be helpful to join a family history society that covers that area. I can't find any of William & Alice's family in 1861, looks like the family may have emigrated, so I don't think Nephi would need to lie about his age.

My Lees family were from Scotland - Monimail, Fifeshire before 1800 then Edinburgh and Dundee.

WOW!!!!!
I do believe that is what I've been looking for. I've looked at that census 3 or 4 times, I don't remember that coming up. My Grandfather William Wray Lees marriage license got transcribed as Loes too. I think the e closes up and looks like an o. As for Nephi, I've seen all kinds of spellings for him, including on the back of the picture I posted for him. When I spelled it that way I got zilch. My Grandmother told me he lied about his age when he came here. That didn't help with the arrival date. Still can't find any record of that. Beginning to think he swam here.
Just out of curiosity what part of the Lees mob do you belong to?

I also found where an Alice Tatton had married a William Lees, but when I went to track that down she ended up being married to someone else (from Australia). I sort of hit a big fat zero searching marriages. I know back then there were multiple marriages, but Australia seemed a bit of a stretch. Still searching but thanks. William (a Hatter), wife Alice and children David 7, Mary 2 and William 9 months.

There is only 1 family listed between William and another Lees family - John Lees (Hand Loom Weaver), Jenny Lees, with ages rounded to 60 and Mary Ann 30.

Nephi Alexander Lees was born in Stockport, Cheshire, Lancashire in 1842. 1900 US census says he arrived in 1855. I have no idea how he arrived or who his parents were. I have searched but have come up empty handed. Once in the US he married Polly Ann Painter and had children with her. I can track him from here, I just can't find any trace of his existence except for the Free BMD index for England. I attached a copy of that but it gives no indication of who the parents were. I don't know if he had brothers or sisters either.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

OMG!I just saw your message I don't know how I missed it. Any way I did see that 1880 census but I did not think it was him because it says his mother Sussie was born in Maryland. His census with Mariah says Scotland.I have to do some more research on that. I have had no luck with Mariah Oates. Still researching.

Hi,
My investigations centre on the Lees of Austerlands, Waterhead and surrounding districts. There are plenty of John Lees' in these areas but I haven't come across the one you are seeking.

In the History of Oldham it says about the Werneth Estate bought by John Lees of Church Lane, " The late John Lees, Esq, was the son of Daniel Lees, a farmer and manufacturer, at Barrowshaw, in Oldham and was brother of Daniel Lees Esq, of Bankside, manufacturer.. He died April 9th 1823."

Barrowshaw is on the other side of the valley of Strinesdale and the area to the east is in Oldham Parish rather than Saddleworth Parish or Ashton Parish. There appears to quite a bit of Lees intermarriage and this largely took place at Oldham Parish church whose records are searchable via the Online Parish Clerk project.

P
