Garnet LaVena Stennett was my aunt that I never knew. She was born 2 June 1890 in Holdrege, Phelps, Nebraska. she died 7 March 1949 in Omaha and was buried in Fairmont Cemetery, in Denver, Colorado. She married a man by the name of LEETE. This is all we know. Would like to find him and make our family history records complete. Thank you.

Mrs. Marlyn Riter

That would be disappointing if it was your rescued photograph being returned to the antique market (this time in VT). My hunch is that it is another photograph of the same family though. It's been a long time, but I don't recall the ornate writing on the back.

Ellen Helen Burgoyne

I have seen various listings of Ellen's Parents being Christopher Burgoyne 1474 - 1534 and Thomasine Freville, 1474-1540. However, no one as yet, seems able to prove this for certain and i am beginning to wonder if there is truth to it or not? Ellen was listed as being a "Gentlewoman" on a Christening record, i think, which seems to indicate that her Parents were perhaps quite well off? But were they Christopher and Thomasine?? Does anyone have any idea Who Ellen's Parents were??
Thanks Jan

In the genealogy of the Descendants of William Leete, there is a EDMUND NORMAN LEETE born in 1851. He had a son Edmund Charles born in 1882. It is possible that your father was named after Edmund Norman who would be his grandfather. I have no information about you but these people appear to be in the NE part of the U. S. Let me know if there is a possible connection.

Yes my great grandmother was a Leete :) Ive managed to trace my line back so far to the Third & Fourth Crusades, where 4 Leete brothers - Peter, Nicholas, Walter and Radmund- served as Knights and had a lot of land bestowed on them by the King.

Its all fascinating

Hi Emma I hope you don't mind me asking but I came across your request for information by accident. I was looking up about a company called Roberts & Leete Ltd. Who I believe were printers and printed the war time posters etc. in the First World War.Are you a family member? The reason I ask is because my wife has a book printed by the Directors of Roberts & Leete Ltd after the First World War. It was printed in memory of the company employees that fought and died. It has photo's and details of them. My Wifes late grandmother was from the Searle family in Fulham and two of the Searles are pictured in the book. Sorry if this is nothing to do with your request, but I thought it might be of interest. Thanks Bryan.

After checking further, I found a copy of a will written by a Flower (I kid you not!) Leete, formerly Flower Browne, widow of William Leete of Cambridgeshire. Flower's will is dated 25 April 1580 and she leaves a LOT of bequests--and bless her, she names names! She names her daughters, including "Marie Rogers". She further leaves 20 British pounds to "John Rogers son of Marie Rogers my daughter 20 pounds at age 21". The will also makes clear that Marie's husband is named John Rogers and that besides her son John, Marie also had daughters named Cassandra and Elizabeth. (Both apparently under the age of 15 when the will was written.) Author John Brooks Threlfall adds an editorial note after quoting the will in which he says:

"John Rogers, husband of daughter Marie, was the son of John Rogers, the proto-Martyr in the reign of Queen Mary."

Again--don't know if this helps, but at least we found a name for John Rogers's wife! And of course "Marie" is just a variant form of "Mary"--and don't forget that spelling was not yet standardized in the 16th century!

Good luck! :-)

Re: LEETE of Guilden Morden

Hello, Hayley!

Yes, your Leete family is definitely related to the Leete family of America. (May I ask where Guilden Morden is? My Leete family came from Eversden, Cambridgeshire.)

Anyway, it appears that you and I are cousins! John Leete, born about 1500 in Eversden, Cambridgeshire, married Ellen (Helen) Burgoyne, around the year 1526. I'm not sure about the parentage of John Leete, but it seems that his father was also named John. Anyway, "our" John (husband of Ellen Burgoyne) was buried at Little Eversden on 25 December (!), 1551.

Here are the children of John and Ellen Burgoyne Leete:

William, born ca 1530
Edmund
Henry
Thomas
Robert (my ancestor, born ca 1525, married Alice Grundy on 6 April 1573

It's interesting too that you mention the popularity of the name "Simeon". Here is a list of the children of my Robert and Alice Grundy Leete:

Symeon (!!), aka Simeon, baptized 23 June 1573
Judeth, bapt. 11 July 1574
Deborah, bapt 22 July 1576
Ruth, bapt 8 May 1579
Mordochias, bapt 23 July 1581
Susanna, bapt 10 November 1583
Phebe (my ancestor), bapt 20 December 1585--married George Parkhurst of Ipswich, Suffolk ca 1611

Oh, and I asked where Guilden Morden is? In looking further in the Leete info, I found mention of a lawsuit involving members of the "Lete", "de Lete", or "Letie" family in the year 1208 (!!!). It related to lands "at Morden in Cambridgeshire". It mentions also that Morden is about 37 miles from Foxcote in Buckinghamshire, which was owned very early by a man named "Leit". This Leit is listed in the Domesday Book as being a thane of Edward the Confessor, King of England 1042-5 January 1065/6.

So I think it's safe to say there is a definite connection between your Australian Leetes and our American branch! :-)

If you want to compare notes, my email is orangeblossom17@gmail.com.

Happy hunting!

Patti
William, I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but I have a book that includes some info on the Leete family. In it, it mentions a Ruth Leete (baptized in Eversden, Cambridgeshire, England on 8 May 1579) who married a Reverend Timothy Dalton in 1615. The book mentions that Ruth Leete had a first cousin (regrettably unnamed) who married "a son of John Rogers the Martyr".

If you're interested, the name of the book is "Fifty Great Migration Colonists to New England & Their Origins" and the author is John Brooks Threlfall of Madison, Wisconsin. The book is a paperback published in 1990--it's a real goldmine of information!

I hope this helps! :-)

Sincerely,
Patti

I have a line of Leete's from Guilden Morden, dating back to a John or Joseph abt. 1500-1551 who married Ellen Burgoyne. A very popular christian name in this branch was Simeon. My branch came out to Australia. Is this the same family that has a branch in the U.S.? Any information connecting the families or further information about the LEETEs would be appreciated.

There are a number of Leete's in Iowa--formerly living in Sioux City, Shell Rock, Clarksville, West Chester, Allison. There is a Leete Assn which has a web site at leete-leet.myfamily.com. I suggest you check in there and there a lot of us that would like to know you. If you can identify your ancester that was born around 1900, he would probably be in the book THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM(GOVERNOR) LEET published in 1934.

My grandmother, Ella May Leete Wiggins had some excerpts from the book "The Decendants of William Leete" but it was only a few pages. Could anyone point me in the direction of either getting a copy of the book or the information from the book?
I have just started looking into my grandmother's family history and this was the first thing that we found.
I would be appreciative of any information someone could give me. Thank you!

Re: Abigaile LEETE dau of Gov. William LEETE

I have the book THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM LEETE, It list Abigail as his daugahter and that she married Rev John Woodbridge on Oct. 26, 1671. He was the son of Rev. John Woodbridge and his wife Mercy Dudley daughter of Gov. Dudley of Mass. Colony. He died Nov. 13, 1691; she died Simsbury, CT April 9, 1710. They had 6 children. Four grew to adulthood and married.
The Leete family goes back to Hokynton (or Oakington). The family had been traced back a long way but for direct use start with Thomas Leete, who had a son, Thomas, who had a son, John who was the father of William, the governor. Give me a note if I can be of further help. Gerry
